Il poeta, Mariano Coreno, si dedica anche ad altre attività: di
giornalista, di attore, e di corista. È fondatore, sostenitore e
portavoce dell’Associazione Coreno Ciociaria di Melbourne. I
suoi libri di poesia, sono ottenibili presso Insegna Publishers,
Brunswick. Partecipa anche al concorso letterario dell’ Alias.

The President and Committee wishes all our readers and sponsors a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Dear members, supporters and sponsors,
The year is rapidly coming to a close and I’m happy that the
members of the Committee have been able to organize for
you another successful year of events. This half year, since
the midyear Dante Oggi magazine was published, our biggest
event has been the Literary & Poetry Recitation and Poster
Competitions that culminated with a well organised Awards
Night held at the University of Melbourne. Inside you can read the
names of the recipients of the various categories with a selection
of photographs that capture exciting moments for the students
and their family members. My gratitude for their involvement
is extended to all the judges and the committee who worked
tirelessly to assist Maria Buonopane and Tania Barbati from
beginning to end. Their reports are included. I must congratulate
also the young students from Yr 7 – 12 who have shown both
the ability and the creativity to write poems or the script of a
discourse “Discorso”. A selection is included for you to read and
to judge for yourselves the talent that is present among our youth.
These are the reasons why the Committee of the Dante Alighieri
Society works so passionately and energetically. It is our strong
belief, that whist the Italian language is both beautiful to listen
to and to speak, it is important to keep our youth in schools
interested and motivated so that they will want to continue
studying the language. The Competitions enable the Society to
recognize and applaud the fruits of hard work and the dedication
of the students and their teachers. It is therefore, your membership
to the Society that enables us to continue the work of promoting
the Italian language.
Hand in hand is also the Italian culture that generates interest
in the Arts and gives enriching and valuable information to our
youth. The teachers in the schools are continuously creative,
presenting new ideas in the classroom and organising events
that involve the whole school community. This edition of Dante
Oggi showcases some schools that continue to do excellent
work in promoting Italian in an enjoyable way.
As I write, there will be thousands of students of VCE Italian
waiting anxiously for their results. Congratulations to all who
have worked hard and received pleasing results. They make
their family and school very proud while reaping the benefits of
many years of study. The Dante Society will continue to support
the schools with the VCE Conversation program. Information is
included in these pages and will also be published on the website
as well as circulating it to Secondary Schools at the beginning
of next year.
Next year, Italy will celebrate 150 years as a Republic. Schools
throughout Italy will be holding a competition for their students.
The Dante Society has been given permission to organize
their own competition based on the same requirements. More
information will be distributed to schools via our website and
newsletter.
I draw your attention to the courses in Language and Culture that
are offered at the Dante School in Camerino in the region of Le
Marche. There are similar courses held in the Dante Schools in
Mondavio, Siena and Savona to name a few.

The Society concluded the year in the newly renovated restaurant
“Il Gambero on the Park” for a delightful Christmas lunch. We were
honoured by the presence of Consul General Dr. Marco Matacotta
- Cordella and Vice Consul Sig.ra Laura Fiorenza and her spouse
Sig.Edoardo Santana Ojeda, as well as our Patron Dr George &
Mrs. Susan Santoro. The festive mood became even happier as
door prizes were unwrapped and winners of the extensive raffle
were announced. A warm and sincere “Thank You” is extended
to Mr & Mrs. Piedimonte of Piedimonte Supermarkets, to Brunetti
Cakes, Drummond Street Cellars, our main sponsors of the
raffle and to Mr & Mrs. Pace of ‘Casa del Gelato’ for donating
the Panettone that complimented the coffee at the end of lunch.
“Thank You” also to the management of “Il Gambero on the Park”
directed by Mr. Frank Di Mattina and to his staff who hosted us
so professionally. Lastly, “Thank You” to all members and friends
who were able to be present. Many apologies were given, due to
personal commitments at this busy time of the year. However,
on behalf of the Committee, I thank you all for your continued
interest, your support and encouragement throughout the year
and for also believing that the Italian language must continue
to thrive in our community. Working collaboratively with other
entities we can only become stronger and work effectively to
benefit our young citizens.
Wishing you and your families a very happy and safe Christmas
and may the New Year bring good health, peace and hope.

L’anno della Dante si chiude con grande soddisfazione per le
attività svolte che sono state ben accolte e seguite dai soci ed
amici sempre in aumento. Sotto la direzione del Presidente,
Dominic Barbaro, il comitato ha lavorato con entusiasmo per
continuare a diffondere l’italiano nelle scuole e arricchire la
comunità con vari aspetti della cultura italiana.
Dunque ringrazio i soci e simpatizzanti per l’appoggio datoci e che
ci incoraggia a continuare il nostro lavoro. L’anno 2011 vi porterà
nuove iniziative e attività e siamo sempre pronti ad ascoltare i
vostri suggerimenti per come in modo pratico possiamo
spargere ancora di più il nome della Società Dante Alighieri nel
Victoria. Congratulazioni agli insegnanti nelle scuole del Victoria
che con la loro grande dedizione, interesse e passione per la
lingua italiana, portano a compimento un lavoro importante nelle
scuole sia quelle elementari che superiori.
La serata di premiazione dei Concorsi svoltasi il 16 settembre è
stata di enorme soddisfazione per chi era presente. I nostri giovani
meritano tantissimi applausi per il modo in cui si sono preparati,
come hanno recitato a memoria, e come la presentazione delle
poesie e discorso di ognuno ha dimostrato immaginazione e
creatività. Congratulazioni ai nostri studenti di cui dobbiamo
sentirci molto orgogliosi. Una selezione del loro lavoro è stato
pubblicato per mostrare la loro abilità e teniamo presente nel
leggere i testi, che i ragazzi sono giovani e per molti, l’italiano
è una lingua aquisita. Dunque è importante incoraggiare i nostri
giovani a continuare lo studio anche al livello universitario, per non
perdere nel futuro in Australia, l’apprendimento e l’uso della nostra
bella lingua. Vi auguro Buone Feste e prosperità nell’anno nuovo.

President’s Report
Annual General Meeting - Dante Alighieri Society December, 2010
I am delighted to present my first Report as President of the
Dante Alighieri Society – Melbourne and from the outset let
me thank the Members for putting their trust in me to lead this
old but prestigious Society into the future with the assistance
of such an enthusiastic and hard working committee.
• Once again I sincerely thank the past President, Tom Hazell,
and past Secretary, Anna Cavedon, for their many years of
dedicated service to the Society and for their assistance to me
and the committee in the transitional phase and throughout
the whole year whenever needed.
• My intention has been to continue the activities already
in place, to strengthen existing links and to pursue further
expansion and collaboration with new entities as opportunities
arose. To achieve such goals all members of the committee
have been given specific tasks with the ability to co-opt
assistants whenever required.
• The annual presentation of Awards, sponsored by the late
Prof. Colin McCormick’s and Dr. Soccorso Santoro’s families
respectively and the Dante Alighieri Society President, to
the best first year student of Italian at the Universities of
Melbourne, Monash and La Trobe was conducted in very
convivial surroundings in the St. Mary’s College’s gardens on
the l4th March.
• I am happy to announce that next year the Italian Medical
Society, through its President, Dr. J. Nastasi and Mr & Mrs.
Tom and Nella Padula, from Insegna Booksellers, will be
sponsoring additional awards that will be offered to students
at Swinburne and Deakin Universities.
It is our intention to split these Awards so that the top student in
his/her first, second and third university year will be rewarded.
• A farewell cocktail party for the outgoing President, Tom
Hazell, and Anna Cavedon, past Secretary, was overwhelmingly
well attended by past and present Society members, friends
and numerous dignitaries among which were the Consul
General of Italy, Dr. Marco Matacotta-Cordella, Hon. James
Gobbo, Justices Tony Pagone, Bernard Bongiorno and Sally
Brown, Grand. Uff. Ubaldo Larubina, Giancarlo MartiniPiovano, Director of Co.As.It, Giovanna Guzzardi, President
of ALIAS, Ivano Ercole, Director of Rete Italia and Gabriella
Gomersal-Hubbard from ‘Il Globo’.
Addressing the guests in Italian, Tom Hazell took us through
the history and development of the Dante Society Melbourne
over the past decades and the role it played within the ItaloAustralian Community. Dr. George Santoro was kind enough
to describe the character of Tom Hazell and the way the latter
became so enthusiastically interested in the Italian language
and culture and eventually so entrenched within the Italian
community via the Dante Society. Anna Cavedon was praised
for her dedication, enthusiasm and exceptional organizational
skills by Michael Bula and Donna Salera. The success of the
evening is testimony to the high regard in which both Tom and
Anna are held within our Community.
• On 27th June the “Lectura Dantis, conducted at the Italian
Institute of Culture, was preceded with a presentation by Ivano
Ercole, Director of Rete Italia, on the life of the ‘Sommo Poeta’:
the poet, the politician and why the ‘Divina Commedia’ was
the extensive topic of presentation.
The Canti from Inferno (V1), Purgatorio (1), and Paradiso (xxx)
presented by Paolo Baracchi, Tom Padula, Nic Panayotis,
Dominic Barbaro and Tania Barbati were complemented by
appropriately soothing music extracts chosen by Nic Panayotis
and comprehensively illustrated in a booklet compiled by Mary
Marcuccio and on screen by Caterina Sciacca.
• On the 22nd July, James Ryan, winner of the 2009
scholarship that made it possible for him to continue his
Italian studies in Rome and Savona, was given the honour
of presenting a gift of books to the Lord Mayor of Melbourne
from the Mayor of Savona. James, accompanied by myself,
Mary Marcuccio and Gabriella Gomersall-Hubbard, from
“Il Globo”, was received by the Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle.
The occasion presented us with the opportunity to present
the Lord Mayor with additional books, one being, the History
of the Dante Society and the Italian Community. At the same
time we sought his assistance with the retrieval, repair and
eventual placement of the marble bust of Dante, a past gift
to the city of Melbourne, that we wish to have relocated in a
suitable environment. This matter will be followed up in the
New Year.
• The Dante Alighieri Society’s 114th Birthday was
celebrated at Zia Teresa’s Restaurant with a delicious ‘pranzo’
complemented by a very interesting presentation of the novel
“The House in via Manno” by Prof. Brigid Maher, from La Trobe
University. This novel, translated from Italian into English by
Prof. Maher is a first for an Italian novel to be translated into
English by an Australian author. The Consul General of Italy’s
presence and his words of encouragement were greatly
appreciated.
• The main event of the year, the Presentation of Awards for
the Literary, Poetry Recitation and Poster Competitions held
at the Old Arts Lecture Theatre of Melbourne University, was
the culmination of a whole year of hard work and dedication
by our committee and the numerous teachers and co-opted
assistants. “Mille Grazie” indeed to our co-ordinators Maria
Buonopane for her organization of the Literary and Recitation
programs and to Tania Barbati for the Poster Competition.
The lecture theatre, as per usual, was packed with students,
family members and friends. We were pleased and honoured
with the presence of the vice Consul General of Italy, Dr. Laura

of Casa D’Abruzzo Club who sponsor the trophy prizes. Both
of them helped us with the presentation of Awards to 150
students selected from approximately 4000 participants from
over 100 schools spread throughout Victoria.
undertaken by our Melbourne Dante. It was also interesting to
find out what the other Dante branches are doing to meet their
local needs and demands. It was also heartening to me to
appreciate that, what we are doing in Victoria, is of paramount
value and importance.
Our young Dante Society members, James Ryan and
Lauren Wilson, and student of Italian at ACU, Mark Gabriele,
presented their personal experience of the Italian language and
culture and what it means to them. All will be very effective
ambassadors of the Dante Alighieri Society mission.
• On a personal level I am greatly indebted to Mary Marcuccio,
Vice President and my right arm with whom I speak almost on
a daily basis and who is always ready to take care of tasks
as they arise.
• We are grateful to Tommaso Durante, Artist and Prof. of
History and Theory of Arts, who helped us celebrate the
Anniversary of the death of Caravaggio at the Assisi Centre,
Rosanna, with a slide presentation and excellent interpretation
of his works complemented by a detailed history of his very
short and disturbed life.
The audience was exceptionally satisfied, judging from the
questions asked and the subsequent feedback received.
Thank you to Gabriella Gomersall-Hubbard for her article in Il
Globo that did justice to Tommaso’s presentation.
• Throughout the year the Society has collaborated with
activities at the Italian Institute of Culture, including the
“Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo”, and with the
Melbourne Italian Festival, including the “Cucina Pugliese”
Dinner at the Abruzzo Club and the activities at Piazza Italia in
Carlton. “Mille Grazie” to Dr. Stefano Fossati, Director of the
Italian Institute of Culture, and Avv. Luciano Bini, Director of
the Melbourne Italian Festival for embracing and involving us
in their activities.
• We were very sad this year for the loss of Grand. Uff. Carlo
Valmorbida and more recently of Mr. Fred Liuzzi, both of whom
were constant supporters and generous to the Dante Society.
Our deep sympathy and condolences to Elsie Valmorbida,
Mary Liuzzi and their respective families.

Congratulations to Dominic Barbaro, who at the AGM,
accepted the role of President for 2011.
• The Committee is deeply grateful to ‘Il Globo’ through
Gabriella Gomersall-Hubbard and Germano Spagnolo for
having given the Dante Alighieri Society Melbourne, the space,
time and expertise to bring to the community, knowledge and
information of our activities, so indispensable for the success
and promulgation of Italian in our community. Congratulations
also to ‘Il Globo’ for its 50th Anniversary.
• The National Conference of Australian Dante Societies
was held in Adelaide from the 3-5 December. The occasion
provided the opportunity to meet the Presidents from other
States and discuss matters of mutual interest. The negative
impact of the National Curriculum Reform proposed by the
Federal Government on the teaching of European languages
emerged as a major issue.
A joint representation to the appropriate political authorities
has been planned in addition to the representation already

shoes. Well, this year, I ‘volunteered’ and tried to walk a part of
Junior Poster Competition 2010
that mile and fill some very BIG shoes. After only one year of
Surrounded by piles of posters, Ada Parrella, Christina
Siciliano and myself set to work at choosing the best ones
for the Dante Alighieri Society Junior Poster Competition. We
received just over 1,000 entries and with the standard of work
being quite high, this made the task even more difficult. The
themes for this year were, “Nel mio orto c’è…” for the Preps
to years 2 and “Il mondo degli habitat” for the years 3 to
6. Many entries were quite creative with the use of colour,
and different textures in some cases, all produced by talented
illustrators and linguists!!
The Presentation Evening was held at the Old Arts Building at
Melbourne University on September 16th. The auditorium was
overflowing with students, parents, siblings, grandparents
and teachers, all there to support and congratulate the
winners. The children’s faces beamed with pride as they were
presented with their trophies and book prizes and posed for
photos that maybe would appear in Il Globo! Even prouder
were the parents of the students.
The guest speakers for the evening, James Ryan, Lauren
Wilson and Mark Gabriele were truly inspiring with their
passion for the Italian language which was very apparent as
they shared their experiences and love of it. Hopefully their
enthusiasm motivated students in the auditorium to continue
with their Italian studies. To acknowledge the participation
of the primary schools in the Junior Poster Competition in
2010, each school will receive a banner. I congratulate all
participants and winners.

Poetry Recitation and Literary
Competitions 2010
In May this year, I remember entering the student centre of
the ‘Old Arts Building’ and requesting a map of Melbourne
University. I mentioned to the red bearded man behind the
counter that I was preparing some details for the Dante Alighieri
Poetry Competition. He gave a loud shriek and proceeded to
tell me that when he was in Year 9, he was a ‘finalist’ in the
Poetry Competition. He remembers that this is what spurred
him on to study Italian in Year 10. What a great story for me to
hear that day! What a great memory to share! What better and
greater motivation to study another year of Italian! The Dante
Alighieri Poetry Competition - what a great tradition!
The Dante Poetry Competition has been a part of the Italian
program in Victorian schools for over 40 years. It was
initiated in around 1964 by Mrs Astolfi and Professor Colin
McCormick. Later, there was Anna Cavedon, whose name for
26 years became synonymous with the Competition. They
say never judge a person until you’ve walked a mile in their
coordinating the secondary school section of the competition,
I am exhausted, but, to Anna, who kept the ‘tradition’ going
for all those years with such vigour, precision and amazing
calmness - I salute you, respect you and thank you on behalf
of all those thousands of students who remember entering the
Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition back in Year 9!!
The are three competitions in the secondary schools section:
The Original Poetry; the Discorso in Italian language and the
Poetry Recitation. This year, the competitions attracted nearly
100 schools with almost 4000 students that participated.
Schools as far as Swan Hill, Geelong, Shepparton and
Traralgon also entered. The preparation and dedication of
the students this year was very high. In fact, on August 6th,
over 250 students were recalled as Finalists with the judges
this year having to award many multiple First, Second and
Third prizes in each year level and section. After hearing the
students ‘recite’ their award winning poems at the awards
night proved to me how hard the task of judging these great
students can really be.
The Awards night on September the 16th was the culmination
of 9 months of hard work from teachers, students and all
others involved. The night saw many proud parents, beaming
faced ‘nonni’, enthusiastic friends, exhausted teachers and
even some ‘impressed’ school principals share in the joy
of the Competition’s ultimate winners. I too marvelled in the
imagination used and displayed in the ‘Original poems’. I was
left ‘con la bocca aperta’ with the emotive ‘Discorso’ by a Year
11 pleading for world peace. I laughed at the wit used in the
‘Discorso’ of the ‘nonna’ and the ‘telefonino’. The emotion,
expression and impeccable pronunciation in poems such as
“Il Treno degli Emigranti”, by Gianni Rodari, and even ‘Dante’s
‘Padre Nostro’ (PURGATORIO Canto XI vv.1-24) moved me
greatly. That night, I also felt immense hope.. I realised that
through these many students and their achievements, there
was still a strong future for the Italian language and the
Italian culture here in Australia. Dante Alighieri himself would
certainly have been proud.
The red bearded man behind the counter at Melbourne
University did not continue studying Italian after Year 10 but
amazingly, he still remembered the name of the poem he
recited in Year 9. At the end of our meeting, he handed me my
map and with a huge smile uttered ‘arrivederci’! His accent
was Australian but his smile was connected with a memory
of something Italian.
Organising the competition was hard work, but in the end,
you realise that it was all for the students, the tradition and for
the love of the Italian language. I wish next year’s coordinator
much success with the same positive satisfaction and
outcomes.

Giovani poeti crescono con il
concorso della “Dante Alighieri”
L’iniziativa della Società Dante Alighieri ha ricevuto anche
quest’anno grande entusiasmo e partecipazione con oltre
4000 studenti iscritti e 150 premiati da circa 100 scuole in
tutto il Victoria.
Come ormai da tradizione, si è svolta la sera di giovedì 16
settembre presso l’aula magna dell’Università di Melbourne
la premiazione del concorso di poesia indetto dalla Società
Dante Alighieri. Giunto alla sua 40 esima edizione, il concorso
della “Dante” ha ricevuto anche quest’anno una straordinaria
affluenza di studenti, dimostrando ancora di più la grande
attenzione riservata dalle scuole di tutto il Victoria per la
manifestazione e più in generale per la cultura italiana. Sono
stati, infatti, oltre 4000 gli studenti che hanno partecipato
al concorso, con oltre 150 alunni premiati con libri e trofei
(questi ultimi sponsorizzati dalla Casa d’Abruzzo di Epping).
Sebbene questa edizione del concorso abbia visto il passaggio
del testimone dalla co-ordinatrice storica della manifestazione,
Anna Cavedon – più volte ringraziata per il suo operato durante
la cerimonia – a Maria Buonopane e Tania Barbati, essa non ha
tuttavia risentito del cambio di “timoniere”, grazie alla bravura
delle due organizzatrici che hanno dimostrato di essere più
che adatte a raccoglierne l’eredità.
Il concorso ha mantenuto la stessa struttura degli anni passati
con le sue quattro sezioni: la “junior poster competition” per
i più piccini; l’”original poetry competition” aperta a tutti gli
studenti delle scuole secondarie dall’anno 7 all’anno 12; la
“poetry recitation competition” per gli studenti dell’anno 9
fino a quelli dell’anno 12; infine la competizione dei “discorsi”
rivolta all’anno 11 e 12.
Il concorso prevede una prima fase in cui i lavori e le prestazioni
degli studenti sono valutati da una giuria qualificata. In questa
prima fase sono decisi i finalisti per la “recitazione” e i
vincitori delle altre competizioni; inoltre, vengono assegnati
i certificati di Pregio, Lode e Merito per tutte le sezioni. Nella
seconda fase si stabiliscono i vincitori del primo, secondo e
terzo premio della “recitazione” (che quest’anno è avvenuta
attraverso la selezione di oltre 250 finalisti).
La premiazione, che si è svolta in un’atmosfera gioviale, è
stata inaugurata dalle parole di benvenuto del Presidente
della Società Dante Alighieri, Dominic Barbaro, che ha
tenuto a rimarcare l’importanza della manifestazione al fine
di continuare a promuovere la cultura italiana in Victoria. Il
Presidente ha introdotto il Vice Console del Victoria e della
Tasmania, la Signora Laura Fiorenza, ospite d’onore della
serata, che insieme a Anna Cavedon e Fernando Cardinale,
Presidente della Casa d’Abruzzo di Epping, ha consegnato i
premi ai vincitori delle varie sezioni.

In seguito, è stata la volta delle premiazioni della “junior poster
competition” e dei discorsi di James Ryan, Lauren Wilson e
Mark Gabriele (studenti universitari d’italiano e ushers della
“poetry recitation competition”) che hanno intrattenuto
il pubblico con la loro simpatia, raccontando le proprie
esperienze in Italia ed elogiando il fascino della lingua italiana.
Meritano poi una menzione del tutto speciale gli studenti che
hanno vinto le sezioni della “poesia orginale”, della “recitazione”
e dei “discorsi”, che si sono esibiti di fronte alle oltre 350
persone presenti. Toccanti sono stati i componimenti creati
dagli studenti ,dove sogni e fantasie dei ragazzi hanno preso
forma poetica in un italiano brillante. Un elogio particolare va
alle poesie “L’ignoto” di Emily De Biase, St. Monica’s College
(vincitricedell’anno 11) e “L’autore” di Laura Colaianni, Our
Lady of the Sacred Heart College in Bentleigh (vincitrice
dell’anno 12), che hanno ricevuto un’autentica ovazione da
parte del pubblico.
Non da meno sono stati gli studenti che hanno vinto la “poetry
recitation competition”, in cui, tra l’altro, va segnalata l’ottima
selezione delle poesie da parte degli organizzatori, che
quest’anno hanno scelto i grandi nomi della letteratura italiana
per avvicinare gli studenti alla cultura del Bel Paese: come
Giosuè Carducci, Giovanni Pascoli, Gianni Rodari e il sempre
immortale Dante Alighieri.
Gli alunni premiati con il primo premio hanno declamato
la propria poesia di fronte al pubblico, dimostrando
un’espressività e una dizione tale da fare invidia ad uno
studente italiano. Tali risultati sono il frutto della dedizione che
gli studenti e i loro insegnanti hanno riposto nella preparazione
del concorso, come affermato dalla vice Presidente Mary
Marcuccio nel discorso conlcusivo.
A chiudere la serata sono stati i ragazzi vincitori della sezione
“discorsi”, che hanno allietato il pubblico con le loro storie
creative ed originali. Sebbene tutti i lavori degli studenti siano
stati brillanti sia per i temi trattati sia per l’ottimo uso della
lingua, una menzione speciale va alla simpatica scenetta
“Ho regalato un telefonino ai miei nonni” di Mariana Monea
e Stefanie Biffaro, Our Lady of Sion College, in cui è stata
comicamente rappresentata la tipica situazione delle nonne
italiane alle prese con la tecnologia, che ha suscitato risa e
applausi scroscianti da parte degli spettatori.
Al termine della premiazione, la vice Presidente Mary
Marcuccio, ha ringraziato gli alunni, gli insegnanti e le famiglie
per l’interesse e la partecipazione al concorso, evidenziando
come il livello di eccellenza degli studenti aumenti di anno in
anno ed incoraggiando gli studenti a continuare lo studio della
lingua italiana anche nel futuro.

Io amo mia nonna Melina
è bella, simpatica e carina.
Lei ama cucinare, ballare e i bambini,
è forte di carattere, ma ha paura dei topolini.
Ogni giorno la nonna va in piscina,
nuota per un’ora e poi ritorna in cucina.

L’Autunno
Una giornata di novembre,
un vento freddo regna sovrano, ammassando le
nuvole cupe.
Le praterie e i campi diventano umidi,
sotto la pioggia insistente.
Lo scricchiolio delle foglie a terra,
è l’unico, a rompere un gelido silenzio.
Sarebbe impossibile passeggiare,
durante questi pomeriggi rigidi e tristi,
sentirsi le dita gelare, e i cuori rattristarsi.
Piuttosto, sedersi accanto a un fuoco scoppiettante,
come una madre circondata dai suoi figlioli,
che l’ascoltano silenziosi.
L’orizzonte si perde tra le nuvole grigie,
un cielo così immenso, viene frastornato dalle
cime di alberi spogli.
Ogni immagine ha la sua storia,
anche se spesso misteriosa e incompresibile.
Non posso esprimere il sentimento che esse mi
ispiravano,
me ne rallegravo,
ero dispensata dal rimpiangere le giornate calde,
perchè queste, le giornate autunnali sono quiete,
mentre ascolto l’infinito e lamentoso soffiar del
vento.

Le tradizioni hanno molto valore perchè ci
indicano il nostro passato. Tutti siamo prodotti
delle nostre tradizioni, infatti, le tradizioni fanno
parte della nostrra storia e del nostro futuro.

In una società moderna le tradizioni sono perse.
La technologia ha reso la nostra vita più veloce,
e tante delle tradizioni dei nostri genitori e nonni
non esistono più. Oggigiorno le nuove generazioni
non sono obligate a continuare le tradizioni.
Ci sono tradizioni che gli immigranti hanno
portato con loro dall’Italia quando sono emigrati
in Australia.
I miei nonni paterni sono nati in Calabria, mentre
i miei nonni materni sono nati in Abruzzo. Loro
hanno tante tradizioni, in particolare tradizioni
culinari. Ogni anno fanno la salsa, il vino, le olive,
i salami e la pasta. Mi ricordo che quando ero
piccola, aiutavo i miei nonni – mescolavo il sugo,
schiacciavo l’uva, attaccavo le salsicce, facevo
la pasta di casa. Questi momenti formano una
parte importante della mia vita. Non conosco
un’altra vita.
Ci sono anche tradizioni religiose. Le feste di
Natale e Pasqua sono le piu’ importanti nella mia
famiglia. Ci riuniamo sempre. Hanno un rito che
i miei nonni hanno insegnato ai miei genitori e
che in seguito i miei genitori hanno insegnato ai
loro figli.
Nella mia famiglia, celebriamo questi giorni
insieme ai parenti e facciamo un bel pranzo che
consiste di piatti tradizionali.
Le tradizioni del passato valgono molto perchè
creano la nostra identità. Fanno parte della nostra
famiglia, la nostra cultura, la nostra storia e il
nostro futuro.

L’Italiano Nelle Scuole... Entusiasmo E Passione!
Italian Film Festival
Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Deepdene recently
hosted a very successful Italian Film Festival for the school
community. The purpose of the Festival was to promote the
Italian Language Program of the school. The Festival coincided
with the school’s program, as Italian film was being used to
help students study character analysis.
Destination Italy
Well, wasn’t ITALIAN WEEK at St. Mark’s un grande
successo?! I spotted so many happy faces – from studenti
to visiting professori to famiglie... - even on Padre Paolo, who
dropped in to see a little bit of the Teatro/Concerto: che bello.
There were a lot of highlights this year, but I need to at least
mention some of the main ones : there was the spaghetti
lunch il lunedì; the libri in classe il martedì; the sfilata delle
maschere il mercoledì; the “Time Warp” spettacolo and the
Concerto il giovedì... and what did everyone have il venerdì
?????????????? UN RIPOSO (= a rest) of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Complimenti a tutti especially because la festa for ITALIAN
WEEK at St. Mark’s, Fawkner was almost identica to la Festa
con le attività di Carnevale that’s conducted every year in
San Marco, Venezia, ITALIA! EVVIVA CARNEVALE - anche in
Australia!!
Ciao, ciao da Signora Salera.
The Festival was officially opened by the Oscar nominated
Screen Writer, Jan Sardi and he also spoke eloquently to
an attentive audience about his film Love’s Brother. The
Consul General of Italy, Dr. Marco Matacotta-Cordella was
also a special invited guest and he expressed his interest in
Education and the Arts in general.
Principal, Mrs Clare Hilbert was thrilled to see the interest that
Dr Matacotta had shown in her school and the programs it
offered to its students. Mrs Hilbert thanked both Dr Matacotta
and Jan Sardi for their presence at the Festival and presented
them with authentic Italian wine from the Abruzzo region.
Parents and parishioners were treated to authentic Italian wine
and assagini beautifully prepared by a parent, Belinda Rotella
from Boccacio’s Supermarket and Wine Cellars. Our gratitude
is extended to CoAsIt for the donation of a Ten week Italian
Language Course as the prize in the raffle. Many thanks to
everyone who attended the three successful evenings of fun
and entertainment.

to give you advance notice of another progetto that I have
in mind……… Soon, the Italian Film Festival will be on in
Melbourne (at cinemas like Balwyn, Kino, Westgarth &
Toorak). I think we should look into attending a session (or

A Great Way To Learn Italian
• Our classes are funded by the Department of Education &
Training ‘After Hours Ethnic Schools Program’
• Qualified & approved LOTE Methodology trained teachers
• Small group sizes
• Co.As.It.’s After Hours Language Program caters from
Pre-School Level through to VCE. The program is based on
the guidelines and recommendations from DEECD & Ethnic
Schools Association of Victoria.
• Pre School Class is held at Tommaso Fiaschi Child Care
Centre and students learn about various topics in Italian in a
fun and caring environment.
• Prep – VCE classes are held at either Carlton or Clayton
and students engage in various topics and cultural aspects.

to their teaching and the promoting of the Italian language and
culture. The teachers and the children’s eagerness, contribute
to the success story of the Co.As.It. After Hours Italian

“Showcase your students’ achievements”
Using Italian colors and themes, the children excitedly
decorated their invitations which were sent home. It read:
L’Associazione Culturale L’Aurora è un ente che cerca di
promulgare la diffusione della lingua e della cultura italiana a
ragazzi di età scolare, dall’anno Prep all’anno 12.
Questa Associazione vanta oltre 500 studenti distribuiti in 18
centri situati in diversi sobborghi di Melbourne.
Per andare incontro alle esigenze dei ragazzi e cercare di
dare a più studenti possibili l’opportunità di avvicinarsi a e
approfondire la cultura italiana, le lezioni sono distribuite in
diversi giorni durante la settimana, di pomeriggio, e il sabato
sia la mattina che il pomeriggio e si estendono quasi per tutta
la durata del normale calendario scolastico.
Ciò che rende speciale l’Associazione è il fatto che vuole
essere accessibile a tutti, con una quota di iscrizione molto
competitiva, questo per far sì che i bambini e i ragazzi con
origini italiane possano scoprire e approfondire le loro radici
e, gli studenti non di origine italiana possano avvicinarsi alla
ricchissima cultura del “Bel Paese” e diventare parte di una
multiculturalità etnica che li circonda anche nella loro vita
quotidiana.
Tutto questo però non sarebbe possibile se all’interno
dell’Associazione non ci fossero persone come Frank Cichello,
il fondatore di questa Associazione, Gail Amato, la direttrice
dell’Associazione, che con instancabile operosità e serietà
fanno sì che tutte le cose funzionino bene. Accanto a queste
persone fondamentali lavora un gruppo di 26 insegnanti molto
validi e professionali, anche di madrelingua italiana, che con
impegno e dedizione trasmettono la passione e la bellezza
della lingua e della cultura italiana.
Durante l’anno i ragazzi sviluppano diverse tematiche,
ampliano il loro vocabolario e sono continuamente stimolati
ad ascoltare ed esprimersi in lingua italiana. Inoltre ci sono
due tappe fondamentali a cui tutte le scuole dell’Associazione
partecipano e che sono dei punti fermi durante l’anno
scolastico. A metà anno tutti gli studenti partecipano alla
Competizione della “Dante Alighieri”. I bambini dall’anno prep
all’anno 6 contribuiscono con la competizione dei Poster
grafici, mentre dall’anno 7 all’anno 12 i ragazzi si impegnano
nella stesura di una poesia originale. Fino ad ora l’Associazione
Culturale L’Aurora può essere orgogliosa dei risultati sempre
ottenuti, perchè ogni anno sono molti gli studenti che risultano
vincitori nelle diverse categorie in cui partecipano.
La seconda tappa fondamentale è il concerto di Fine Anno
Scolastico che segna anche il punto di arrivo e la celebrazione
dei risultati conseguiti durante l’anno.
È un’occasione in cui i ragazzi, attraverso poesie, recite,
canti e balli mostrano alle proprie famiglie tutto ciò che hanno
imparato ed è anche l’occasione per molte persone “più
grandi” di origine italiana, di riascoltare storie o di ritrovare
degli aspetti del loro passato.
È veramente una giornata di festa per tutti!

You are invited to participate in our Italian lesson on 26th
November at 12.10pm-12.40pm in Grade Prep, Room 6.

This was an opportunity for parents to see what their child has
been learning in Italian this year. It was also an opportunity
for the students to showcase what they have achieved in the
Italian language in their first year of school.
The students began with a greeting song and then each child
introduced themselves in Italian, using a toy microphone.
This was followed by counting, more songs, mime, matching
activities with the interactive whiteboard and a game of Colori
Tombola. The parents were also involved in the games.
The lesson was concluded with a story, read by my ltalian
language assistant. This all happened in a 50 minute lesson
and the feedback was very positive. Both the students and
their guests were pleased with the performance. One parent
was heard saying, “I wish I could come to Italian lesson each
week. It made me want to learn the language.”

St. Monica’s Epping
3MsC, oppure Tre metri sopra il cielo, un film di successo
strepitoso tra i giovani italiani, ha avuto gran successo anche
tra gli studenti d’italiano al St. Monica’s College, Epping nel
corso di due giornate di immersione nella lingua italiana.
Per dare agli studenti l’opportunità di fare esperienza della
lingua italiana viva, due professoresse di VCE Italian, Lucy
D’Angelo, del Penola College, Broadmeadows e Pina Dunne
del St. Monica’s College, Epping, hanno, infatti, progettato un
programma di immersione, durante le vacanze invernali. Così,
mentre il resto degli studenti dormiva, 30 studenti d’italiano
sono ritornati a scuola per prendere parte ad una vivace
esperienza di pratica della lingua italiana.
A tale scopo, è stato organizzato un programma che ha
previsto una serie di attività da svolgersi interamente in
italiano, consistenti in pratica scritta e orale, ascolto, giochi
e preparazione di specialità culinarie italiane. Il programma è
iniziato con giochi di presentazione, a cui hanno fatto seguito
la proiezione del film summenzionato, Tre metri sopra il cielo,
la successiva discussione dei vari argomenti in esso presenti
e, infine, la scrittura della recensione del film.
La seconda giornata ha avuto come punto centrale la prova
orale, sia di gruppo che individuale. Le attività di gruppo sono
consistite in giochi a carte, nell’utilizzo della lavagna interattiva
e in esercizi grammaticali. Per la parte individuale, gli studenti
si son dovuti presentare ad una prova orale, come se fosse un
esame, e hanno dovuto sostenere una conversazione con un
interlocutore. Molti altri colleghi hanno assistito a questa parte
del programma, incluso due ex assistenti di lingua italiana,
Jacopo D’Alessio (2007) e Maria Antonietta Bevilacqua
(2006). Gli studenti dopo la prova hanno ricevuto un voto e
consigli su come migliorare la loro competenza orale.
Alla “faticaccia” sostenuta dagli studenti in quest’ultima parte
del programma di immersione, è seguita un’attività molto
divertente e coinvolgente. Ad un certo punto sono, infatti,
arrivati i due bravi cuochi Anna Di Perna e Silvio Serpa con
il compito di aiutare nella preparazione di una magnifica cena
all’italiana: pasta fatta in casa con due sughi e un dolce da far
svenire, il tiramisù. Un lavoro lungo e a volte duro, ma che ha
prodotto risultati davvero ottimi e “squisiti”.
Tutto sommato, i ragazzi si sono molto divertiti, hanno
cercato di parlare sempre in italiano mentre svolgevano le
varie attività, hanno conosciuto altri studenti e altri insegnanti
e hanno fatto nuove amicizie e tutto ciò ha permesso loro
di affrontare il resto dell’anno con una maggiore sicurezza e
fiducia in se stessi e di pensare al VCE e alla comunicazione
orale in italiano non più come ad una cosa spaventosa ma
possibile da superare.

Italian at Resurrection House
Often, an excited little voice exclaims, “Signora, I’ve got something
to show you and the children in Italian today.” It will be a special
book, a DVD, a tea-towel from Calabria or Sicilia, a gold cross or a
set of rosary beads, brought as a gift from Italy by a loving nonna
or nonno.
This is a very special time, showing that the student is engaged and
motivated in his/her learning of the Italian language and culture and
is eager to share this enthusiasm with others.
I am more than fortunate to teach at Resurrection House, in
Essendon, a small Catholic primary school under the care of the
Sisters of the Resurrection. My Principal, Sr Hermina Widlarz CR,
is supportive, encouraging and actively involved in what I do. It
is she who organises the excursions and events we plan so that
I can concentrate on teaching and on the childrens’ learning. Her
knowledge, expertise, experience and patience are invaluable.
My language program is quite challenging in its level of expectation
and wide-ranging in scope. Its overall vision is based on introducing
and developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and
writing and an awareness and deeper understanding of Italian
culture and its place in our life in Australia. Themes are chosen for
their relevance to my students: home, family and leisure, school
life and the world around us. Within these general parameters the
finer details find their place: traditional greetings, days, months,
numbers, family members etc. The more advanced units develop
skills including telling the time, writing postcards/ letters, creating a
detailed personal profile and a study of the geography and specific
monuments of Italy.
At each year level these are supported by art/craft activities and
singing: cookery, making a Pinocchio puppet, a cottonwool
‘pupazzo’, pasta posters or other models.
Our biennial ‘Carnevale’ concert involves the children in studying,
learning and performing poems, songs and short plays in fluent,
correct Italian! It is a very demanding, busy time, but one of great
enthusiasm and reward for everyone. The students continually
amaze, not only me, but their families and teachers with the
exceptional level of language and cultural acquisition they reach
through the performances.

Outside the school, the Grade 6 students go on excursions to Carlton
for an Italian lunch at the pizzeria where, under supervision, a lucky
few practise throwing the pizza dough. It usually doesn’t end up on
a pizza tray! Then it’s off to the Gelateria to order their favourite treat
in Italian. No Italian, no gelato!
During their unit on ‘Health and healthy eating’, Grade 5s participate in
a guided ‘treasure hunt’ for healthy foods imported from Italy, watch
and join in fresh pasta being made and are generally spoilt, Italianstyle, by the very generous staff at Mediterranean Wholesalers.
This is just a little of what happens within my Italian program of a
45 minute lesson a week. As Sister Hermina teasingly commented
when I told her I had been invited to write this article,“Will an article
be long enough or do you need a book?” She could rightly claim, as
the Italians say, ‘Conosco bene i miei polli!’

Elvira Occhipinti
03/02/1914 – 03/11/2010
On the 3rd of November,2010, an end of an era occurred with
the passing to eternal life of Elvira Occhipinti. She has left a
legacy not only with her 10 children, 21 grandchildren and
24 great-grandchildren but with all those who knew her. She
attended various functions of the Dante Alighieri Society and
was considered the mother of all.
The following words were written by her great-grandaughter,
Daniela Grasso, former President of the Giovane Dante and
delivered on the day of the funeral as a tribute to this simple,
strong, independent woman, who even without any formal
education or ability to read or write was able to make an
impact on whoever she met.
“Being proud of your heritage seldom comes with a living
piece of your family’s history. And I have always taken great
pride in telling others that I am the 4th generation of a family
of strong Sicilian women, with my bisnonna Elvira at the
forefront as matriarch.
96 anni te li ha Benedetti Dio, E tu, a noi, hai regalato la gioia
di essere parte di questa tua lunga vita. Ricca di famiglia,
amici, tradizioni e ricordi che ora faranno parte dei nostri futuri
racconti della nostra carissima mamma e nonna Elvira.
La sua forza e forte volonta’ l’ha permesso di convivere a
casa con i suoi figli, fin all’ultimo respiro. Era il punto centrale
per tutti noi. Per averci legati insieme e aver dato vero valore
al significato di famiglia.
Nonostante distanza o differenze, eri tu che mantenevi il
legame tra noi tutti. Il tuo mondo era pieno di affetto, con
10 figli, 21 nipoti e 24 pronipoti. Hai arricchito la nostra vita
sia con cultura, tradizioni ma sopra tutto, per essere stata il
nostro gioiello speciale.
Grazie, mamma e nonna Elvira per averci voluti bene, ogn’uno
di noi in un modo particolare. Grazie per essere stata la nostra,
ieri, oggi e per sempre.”
With each day that continued to transform into another passing
year, we were reminded of this privilege and great honour. It
was an extra day with our mamma and nonna Elvira to learn,
listen and be grateful for being blessed with family.
The adaptability of a woman who has surpassed the changes
of two centuries in her lifetime, has seen her ‘go with the
times;’ never being left behind and never compromising her
independence or strong will.
Events and outings were always enriched by our mamma and
nonna Elvira’s presence and her eagerness to participate. She
truly treasured these times and insisted that they always be
captured in a photo. These moments will now remain timeless
for us.
Although today will be the end of an era, the closure to a
generation, it is only the beginning of new futures and new life
for many in our families. So with much love, we will always be
thankful for having been blessed with our mother, nonna and
bisnonna Elvira.”
“Dire di essere orgogliosi di questa mamma e nonna non e’
grande abbastanza. Ed esprimire di cuore quanto potremmo
eloggiarla, non ci sono parole abbastanza.
Ma vedendo quanti ne siamo intorno a lei oggi, e’ la conferma
che la nonna era piu’ di una mamma di 10 figli, ma una nonna
e madre di tutti.
Chiunque conosceva la nostra famiglia, conoscevano questo
nostro gioiello.

We have many photographs in our archival records that are
testimony of her participation in the activities of the Dante
Society. She is remembered with great respect by those who
knew her.
Tanti non hanno l’opportunita’ di aver conosciuto i loro nonni.
Ma invece nella nostra famiglia, possiamo dire ed essere fieri
di aver avuto ad Elvira come mamma, nonna e bisnonna.
