OBJECTIVES:
● To provide students an opportunity to practice their presentation skills and communicate their ideas to their
peers and adults by presenting their bulletin board.
● To provide students an opportunity to highlight the importance of creating an engaging learning environment.
● To share ideas and approaches of various types of bulletin board displays.
OVERVIEW:
The most common display system found in an instructional setting is a bulletin board. Basically, the bulletin board is a
vertical surface to which an assortment of visuals can be attached and displayed. The Bulletin Board Contest is an
individual or team event that recognizes participants who demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and ability to create a
bulletin board display for teaching and/or for student interaction. Participants must prepare a display board and an
oral presentation introducing the display and summarizing how it could be used in a classroom setting to teach a lesson.
The display board may be no larger than 36” x 48”.
CONTEST GUIDELINES:
I. Region
A. Each chapter may submit up to 2 entries for the regional competition.
B. Contestants must attend school in the region where the members are competing.
C. Contestants and advisors should carefully read and familiarize themselves with all the pages of this contest. The
Judge’s Scoring Sheet will inform the contestants on how the contestants will be scored.
D. One to three students may present this display, but all students who go to present must have an equal part in
the presentation.
E. Contestants must wear professional clothing.
F. Chapters must indicate on their conference registration form the number entering in this event.
G. Contestants will register at the time indicated on the program agenda. Registration will be held open for one
hour. Late arrivals will be displayed, but not judged.
H. Contestants must bring a Registration and Final Evaluation form with the top portion completed to turn in at
contest registration.
I. At registration, contestants will be given a time to return for their presentation.
J. Contestants should arrive at the competition area 15 minutes before their assigned time. If the contestants are
not there at their scheduled time, the next in line will move up to the next time slot. The contestants who are
not in line at their appointed time will compete at the next available time slot.
K. All displays will be scored using the criteria on the Judge’s Scoring Sheet.
L. The bulletin boards are to be picked up before the last general session. Awards will be presented during the last
general session.

M. Contestants receiving a score of 90-100 will be recognized on stage during the final general session, and will be
qualified to advance to state.
N. Advisors can pick up their packets with the Judge’s Scoring Sheets at the headquarters table after the last
general session.
O. After receiving the Judge’s Scoring Sheets, the state qualifiers can make any needed corrections before going to
state.
P. Region president schools must complete the online Region Certification Form within 10 calendar days following
the region conference. (This does not register anyone for state. It is for verification purposes only.)
II. State
A. The chapter advisors must send a Registration and Final Evaluation form for each entry, with the top portion
filled out, to the state competitive events coordinator. All registrations must be received on or before 35 days
prior to the Annual Teach Tomorrow Summit.
B. Contest times will be posted to the Teach Tomorrow Summit website. Contestants will be assigned a time to
compete, and they will be expected to arrive at the contest area 15 minutes before their assigned time. If they
are late, they may be disqualified.
C. Contestants will be scored using the criteria on the Judge’s Scoring Sheet.
D. Bulletin Boards will be available for viewing after judging is complete and are to be picked up before the last
general session. Awards will be presented during one of the general sessions.
E. All contestants receiving a blue ribbon will be recognized on stage during one of the general sessions.
F. Advisors can pick up their packets with the Judges’ Scoring Sheets at the headquarters table after the last
general session.
III. Display
A. The project will be illustrated on a board no larger than 36” x 48”
1. The bulletin board decorations and/or information must be on the front side of the board (attached to
the board).
2. Any attachments or decorations may not extend more than 6 inches beyond the cardboard display
edges.
B. The display should include a Summary Sheet (placed on the bottom right side of the back of the display) with the
following items addressed:
1. Name/s of the individual/team members who created the bulletin board, name of school, school district,
town/city
2. Instructional Objective/s
3. Target Audience
4. Directions on how the teacher and students are to interact with the display
5. Materials needed
C. ONLY letters, numbers and borders may be purchased. All other items on the bulletin board must be hand
designed, stenciled, die cut or computer generated with general supplies such as construction and scrapbook
paper, fabric, etc...
IV. Presentation
A. Contestants will be given up to 5 minutes to present their Bulletin Board display. At the end of 5 minutes,
contestants will be stopped.
B. Presentation must include information from the Summary Sheet and the Educational Significance. (How the
bulletin board could be used in a classroom to teach or reinforce a lesson, and the benefit this media has to
students and to teachers.)
C. Following the presentation, the judges will have 5 minutes for questioning. This is an opportunity for the judges
to ask questions to correct any judging errors before final ribbons are awarded.
FACILITATOR’S AND JUDGES’ INFORMATION:
I. Both Regionals and State:
A. Facilitators are to attend the Facilitators’ Orientation and pick up all necessary materials.
B. The facilitator is responsible for room setup and securing judging packets from the headquarters. He/she also
needs to get a student door monitor, student runner, and student timekeeper.
C. Facilitators are responsible for judges’ orientation.

D. The judging panel will consist of 1-2 adults and 1 student. (It is suggested that there be a panel of judges for
every 10 displays.)
E. Judges and facilitators will not be allowed to work any event where they have students from their school district
competing except if there is more than one room of contestants for the event. The judge or facilitator can work
in a room where he/she does not have students competing.
F. The contestants will have 5 minutes to give their presentations and should be stopped at the end of the 5
minutes. The timekeeper will give a 1 minute warning after 4 minutes have passed, and a 30 second warning
when 30 seconds are remaining. At the end of 5 minutes, a STOP sign will be held up and contestants will be
asked to stop.
G. After the presentation, judges will have 5 minutes to ask questions and finish their scoring sheet. If something
was missed during the presentation, this is time to ask questions and get clarification.
H. Each judge will prepare a Judge’s Scoring Sheet for each bulletin board scored.
I. All judges’ decisions are final.
J. When all judges are finished judging a contestant, the runner will take the Judge’s Scoring Sheets to the
facilitator. He/she will then complete the Final Evaluation.
K. All judges and the contest facilitator must initial the Final Evaluation before leaving the room.
L. The facilitator will then complete a Master Rank Sheet.
M. Each contestant will have a Registration and Final Evaluation Sheet and 2-3 judges’ scoring sheets. The
facilitator should alphabetize the contestants’ sheets by schools’ names, clip them together, put them and the
Master Rank Sheet in the large envelope provided in the facilitator’s packet then return the packet to
headquarters.
N. The same set of judges must judge the bulletin board and the presentation.
II. Regionals
A. Facilitators will register bulletin board contestants at the time indicated on the program agenda. Registration
will be held open for one hour and then closed. Late arrivals will be displayed, but not judged.
B. As the contestants register, the facilitator will take up their Registration and Final Evaluation forms, and assign
the competitors a time to return for their presentation. The Facilitator should remind them to arrive 15 minutes
before their assigned time in case the event is running early.
III. State
A. Registration and Final Evaluation forms will be in the Facilitator’s packet.
B. The facilitator should post the event time schedules on the door so students know when to compete.
