Vera L. Flenker Hansen,
age 91, passed away May 17,
2013.
Vera was preceded in
death by her parents, John
and Lucy Flenker; husband,
Harold Hansen, in 1983; infant brother; and brother,
Grant Flenker Sr.; sisters,
Elaine Flenker-Glogau, Esther Flenker-Miller; daughter-in-law, Yon Hansen.
Survivors include son, Retired M. Sgt. John H. Hansen, of Junction City, Kan.;
daughters, Pamela A. Main
and husband, Tom, of Council
Bluffs, Iowa, and Nancy V.
McMullen and husband, Patrick, of Silver City, Iowa; five
grandchildren and spouses,
Thomas W. (Teri) Main, of
Canton, Ga., Sheila Main, of
Las Vegas, Nev., Kiger
Hansen, of New York City,
Ryan McMullen, of Malvern,
Iowa, and Beth (Chance)
Booker, of Crescent, Iowa;
five great grandchildren,
Shannon and Travis Main,
Taylor, and Danny McMullen
and Evan Booker.
Private family graveside
services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the
Union Pacific Railroad Museum and Council Bluffs Library.

Donald was born August
19, 1931, in Grand Island,
Neb.; to Ralph and Frances
(Willis) Carruthers and graduated from Grand Island
High School. He served in the
National Guards and worked
as a Locomotive Engineer for
the Union Pacific Railroad for
over 44 years. Donald and
wife Enola celebrated their
59th wedding anniversary on
May 9th. His hobbies include
fishing, boating, camping and
bowling.
Donald is preceded in
death by his parents, infant
brother, and brother, Ron
Carruthers.
Survivors include his wife
Enola C.; sons, Doug and
friend, Deb Barnes, Daniel
and wife, Connie, all Council
Bluffs; grandchildren and
spouses, Derek and wife, Amber, Jeff and wife, Jamie, Andrea Arrick and husband,
Thomas, Bryce and Hunter
Carruthers; sister, Pam Fryei
and husband, Larry, of Boise,
Idaho.
Visitation with the family
Sunday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at
Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel.
Private Interment at the
Walnut Hill Columbarium at
a later date. Family will direct memorials.

Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
Laura was born March 10,
1961, in Council Bluffs, and
was preceded in death by her

Lynch; uncles, Robert and Joseph Points.
She is survived by the love
of her life, Sean Reilly, of
Council Bluffs; step-brother,
Jim Knoll and wife, Billie, of
El Dorado, Kan.; uncle, Ron
Lynch and cousin, Michael
Lynch, both of Loveland,
Iowa; cousins, Brian Lynch
and wife, Waunetta, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Kimberly
Hanson and husband, Tony,
of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Amber,
Chris, Zack and Brandon
Lynch, and several second
cousins. Laura is also survived by very close friends,
Melissa Sinnott and Linda
Watts; “adopted” niece and

Dustin and Devin Sinnott, all
of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

held Tuesday May 21, 2013,
at 4 p.m., at the New Life
Fellowship Church located at
1211 N. 24th St., Council
Bluffs, Iowa.

Thelma L. Taylor, age 85,
of Council Bluffs, Iowa,
passed away at Jennie Edmundson Hospital on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

Fredrick “Sugarbear” Duncan, age 63, of Council Bluffs,
passed away at his home on
Thursday after a long illness.
Fred was born in Pine
Bluff, Arkansas, on September 30, 1949, to Nathaniel
and Nora (Langford) Duncan.
Fred was a Golden Gloves
Boxer. He worked for Vrana
Construction. He was of Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death
by his father, Nathaniel; and
niece, Angela.
Survivors
include
his
mother, Nora Duncan; 5 sisters, Sandra Thomas, Debra
Duncan, Jacki and James
Wilder, Linda Duncan and
Donita Duncan, all of Council
Bluffs;
brother,
Charles
Bubba Ray Duncan and wife,
Holley; 16 nieces and nephews; 22 great nieces and
nephews; 7 great great nieces
and nephews; 4 aunts and 1
uncle.

Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Funeral Service on Wednesday,
at 1 p.m., at the funeral
home. Burial in Garner

Carl
Schroder, age 87, of Council
Bluffs, Iowa, died May 17,
2013 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson.
He was born December 29,
1925, in Loveland, Iowa, to
the late Carl and Pearl
(Larsen) Schroder.
Marvin served in the
United States Army during
World War II. He married
Irene Marie Clausen on May
28, 1947, and they lived on a
farm near Honey Creek,
Iowa. In 1949, they moved to
Council Bluffs and Marvin
worked for the Union Pacific
Railroad for 18 years. He
then worked for the Loyal Order of the Moose for 19 years,
retiring as Deputy Supreme
Secretary. They retired to
Corpus Christi, Texas, where
he enjoyed playing golf 5 days
a week and traveled extensively with his wife, Irene, returning to Council Bluffs in
2002. He was a member of
Saint John Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents,
he was preceded in death by
his son, Douglas Lynn
Schroder; brother, Harvey
Schroder.
Marvin is survived by his
wife, Irene Marie Schroder;
son, Alan Arthur Schroder Sr.
and his wife, Gale, of Dallas,
Texas; daughter, Diane Lea
Irlmeier and her husband,
Terry, of Urbandale, Iowa;
grandchildren, Scott Irlmeier
and his wife, Jen, Alan Arthur Schroder Jr., Lisa
Irlmeier, Jennifer Schroder,
Joshua Schroder and his
wife, Emily, Clarice Schroder,
and Andrew Schroder. He is
also survived by 8 great
grandchildren.
Visitation is Monday, 10
a.m., with a funeral service to
begin at 11 a.m. at the
Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home,
with Reverend E. Jon Benson
officiating. Interment is in
the St. Paul Lutheran Church
Cemetery, Boomer Township,
Neola, Iowa, followed by a reception in the community
room at Hoy-Kilnoski.
In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Saint
John Lutheran Church or
Risen Son Christian Village.

Merlin Robert Dau, age
76, longtime farmer, passed
away Friday, May 17, 2013,
at his home with his family
by his side.
Merlin was born June 4,
1936, in Oakland, Iowa, to
Detlef “Ted” Dau and Linda
Krohn Dau and graduated
from Minden High School.
Merlin was united in marriage to Delores M. Johnson,
with whom he graduated on
January 5, 1957.
Merlin farmed his entire
life and served as clerk of
York Township for over 30
years, sold Dekalb Seed 30
plus years, and volunteered
at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. Merlin was also a sponsor
and meeting chair for Alcoholics Anonymous for 20 plus
years, and a member of the
Minden United Church of
Christ.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Detlef and
Linda; step-father, Gifford
Schnepel; and brother, Donald Dau.
Survivors include his wife
of 56 years, Delores Dau;
daughter, Dianna Prokupek
and husband, Rob, all of Oakland; sons, Roger and wife,
Maribeth, of Shelby, Iowa,
Steven and wife, Joanne, of
West Point, Neb., David and
wife, Brenda, of Oakland, and
Dwight and wife, Jennifer, of
Minden, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren,
and 25 great grandchildren;
brother, Richard Dau and
wife, Vivian, of Oakland;
nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family
Monday, 4 to 8 p.m., at the
Minden United Church of
Christ. Funeral services
Tuesday, 2 p.m., also at the
church. Interment in Minden
Cemetery, with a luncheon to
follow back at the church.

who died on May 16, 2013, in
Avoca, Iowa, are set tentatively for Saturday, May 25,

She is survived by her son,

Wendell
Donald D. Wendell, age
72, of Council Bluffs, Iowa,
passed away Wednesday,
May 15, 2013.
He was born on August 13,
1940, in Council Bluffs, Iowa,
to the late Donald L. and
Helen (Church) Wendell. He
graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School.
While living in Council
Bluffs, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, and
owned and operated a thriving nightclub. He also enjoyed owning and operating a
successful Corvette Repair
Company for several years in
Omaha, Neb., and was active
in The Omaha Corvette Club
and Corvette Racing, including two New York to California Cannonball Runs.
Donald lived and relaxed
for 20 years in Maui, Hawaii,
where he continued working
on cars, playing tennis, being
a cab driver, and was for a
short time a “car specialist”
on the radio. He moved back
to Council Bluffs two years
ago to retire.
Donald is survived by his
son, Jimmie Wendell, of Sacramento, Calif.; and brother,
Gary Wendell and his family,
of Roseville, Calif.
Donald has been cremated
and there will be a private
family memorial.

28, of Council Bluffs, passed
away Thursday, May 16,
2013.
Nathan was born December 10, 1984, in Council
Bluffs and graduated from
Abraham
Lincoln
High
School in 2003.
He was preceded in death
by grandfather, Alvie Duncan.
Nathan is the beloved son
of Deborah Shaw and her
husband, Bruce, Mike Duncan and his wife, Tina; beloved brother of Michael Duncan and his wife, Jill and

Bluffs; beloved grandson of

Marjorie is survived by her
husband, Louis Pomerleau, to
whom she was married on
November 5, 1955; children,
