At the Beginning
A Little Nut Tree
At the beginning is a good place to be
What will each day bring for you and me?
New life, new friends, new things to do
At the beginning is a good place to be.
I had a little nut tree
Nothing would it bear
But a silver nutmeg
And a golden pear.
The Good Morning Song
The King of Spain’s daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake of
My little nut tree.
Good morning to you, good morning to you
Hello! Hello! Good morning to you.
What Are You Wearing?
Good Morning
Good morning, good morning
Good morning to you.
Good morning, good morning,
And how do you do?
How do you do, how do you do,
How do you do, today?
I’ll shake your hand,
And smile and say,
How do you do, today.
Come Let Us Gather
Come let us gather, now to sing.
Sing from your heart, great joy to bring
Body, mind, spirit, voice
Come let’s sing.
What are you wearing?
What are you wearing?
What are you wearing…today?
To-day!
If you’re wearing [red] stand up!
If you’re wearing [red] stand up!
Da da-da dada, Da da-da dada
Sit down gracefully.
Butterfly
Butterfly, Butterfly, what lovely wings!
Flutter by, flutter by, and my hear sings!
Butterfly, Butterfly, I want to know,
When it rains, when it rains, where do you go?
Sunflower
Sunflower, sunflower, yellow and round
You are the prettiest flower I’ve found
Tall, straight, full of grace
I love the light in your bright yellow face!
Songs for Children – Course 38
This is my School
This is my school, my place to work and play
My friends and I are living out each day
Washing a table, polishing a cup
Every day I’m growing up
This is my school, my place to work and play

Brown Squirrel
Happy Birthday Song
Brown squirrel, brown squirrel
Shake your bushy tail.
Brown squirrel, brown squirrel
Shake your bushy tail.
Wrinkle up your little nose,
Crack a nut between your toes
Brown squirrel, brown squirrel
Shake your bushy tail.
Happy happy Birthday
Happy happy Birthday, we’re in love with you!
May happiness be near, for all the coming year
And all the best to you!
So keep on smiling every day
May your troubles go away
And may you never, ever, ever be blue.
Happy Birthday [name]
Happy Birthday {name} to you!
I’ve Been Working on the Railroad
April Showers
I’ve been workin’ on the railroad
All the live-long day
I’ve been workin’ on the railroad
Just to pass the time away
Can’t you hear the whistle blowing
Rise up so early in the morn
Can’t you hear the captain shouting
“Dinah blow your horn”
Though April showers may come your way
They bring the flowers that bloom in May
So if it’s raining
Have no regrets
Because it isn’t raining rain you know
It’s raining violets
Dinah won’t you blow, Dinah won’t you blow
Dinah won’t you blow your hor-or-orn?
Dinah won’t you blow, Dinah won’t you blow
Dinah won’t you blow your horn?
Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah
Someone’s in the kitchen I kno-ow-ow-ow.
Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah –
Strummin’ on the old banjo
And singing – Fee, fie, fiddle-eye-oh, fee, fie, fiddle-eye-ohho-ho-ho
Fee, fie, fiddle-eye-oh
Strummin’ on the old banjo.
And where you see clouds upon the hills
You soon will see crowds of daffodils
So keep on looking for a bluebird
And listening for his song
Whenever April showers come along.
Five Brown Buns
Five brown buns in the bakery shop
Five brown buns with the sugar on the top
Along came a man with a penny in his hand
Took one bun and away he ran…
No brown buns in the bakery shop,…
Took one look and away he ran!
The Java Jive
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt
I like coffee, I like tea
I like the Java Jive and it likes me
Coffee and tea and the Java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup…
Ahhhh!
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt
That’s my name, too!
Whenever we go out,
The people always shout
There goes John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt!
Da da da da da da da
I love Java, sweet and hot.
Hey Mister Moto, I’m a coffee pot
Shoot me the pot, and I’ll pour you a shot
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup….
Ahhhh!

It Rained a Mist
Full Moon Overhead
It rained a mist, it rained a mist
It rained all over the town, the town.
It rained a mist, it rained a mist
It rained all over the town …
Full moon overhead
Pumpkins lying on the vine
Leaves turning crimson red
Grapes crushed into wine
Repeat. Have children suggest things we see in the town
… it rained all over the streets, the streets …
… it rained all over the cars, the cars …
… it rained all over the sidewalks, the sidewalks …
… it rained all over the street lights, the street lights …
… it rained all over the buildings, the buildings … etc.
Halloween time tonight!
Spirits every where
Take a walk at midnight
Shadows give you a scare!
Another time, change the classification:
… the farm … the playground … the forest … the zoo…
Grand Ol’ Duke of York
The Grand ol’ Duke of York
He had ten thousand me
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And marched them down again
And when you’re up you’re up
And when you’re down you’re down
And when you’re only half way up
You’re neither up nor down.
Back in Your Own Backyard
A bird with feathers of blue
Is waiting for you
Back in your own back yard
You’ll see the castles of Spain
Through your window pane
Back in your own back yard
Well you can go the East, go to the West
Some day you’ll come
Weary at heart, back where you started from
You’ll find your happiness lies
Right under your eyes
Back in your own back…
Back in your own back…
Back in your own back yard.
Songs for Children – Course 38
Cuckoo
From out the battered elm tree
The owl calls out “I’m here”
And from the distant forest
The cuckoo answers clear
“Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo-cuckoo-cuckoo!
“Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo-cuckoo-cuckoo!
Charlotte (The Color Song)
Charlotte has a dress of blue –
Good Bye. Good Bye.
Wore it when it was brand new –
Good Bye, Liza Jane.
(Chorus)
Oh, how I love her –
Isn’t it a shame.
Oh, how I love her –
Good Bye, Liza Jane.
Repeat, having children suggest colors:
… brown … Wears it when she goes to town
… red … Wears it when she goes to bed
… beige … Wears it when she’s on the stage
… black … Made it from a gunny sack
… yellow … Wears it when she’s feeling mellow
… green … Nicest dress I’ve ever seen
… white … Wears it every other night
… pink … Wears it when she scrubs the sink
… orange … Wears it when she eats an orange
… purple … Got it stuck with maple syurple
… (well, you get the idea …)

Brother, Won’t You Dance with Me?
Big Blue Frog
(make a dance that follows the words)
I'm in love with a big blue frog
A big blue frog loves me
It's not as bad as it appears
He wears glasses and he's six foot three
Brother, won’t you dance with me?
Both my hands I offer thee
Right foot first, left foot then,
Round and round and back again.
With my hands I clap, clap clap
With my feet I tap, tap, tap.
Right foot first,
Left foot then,
Round and round and back again.
Well I'm not worried about our kids
I know they'll turn out neat
They'll be great looking 'cos they'll have my face
And great swimmers 'cause they'll have his feet
I'm in love with a big blue frog
A big blue frog loves me
He's not as bad as he appears
He's got rhythm and a Ph.D.!
Blossom on the Plum
Blossom on the plum
Wild wind and merry
leaves upon the cherry
And 1 swallow comes
Repeat, this time with 2 swallows, then
3, 4, 5 until interest is gone.
A Windy Day
It was such a windy day, it was such a windy day,
It was such a windy day
My hat blew away.
My hat blew away it was nowhere to be found
Listen to the windy sound (Whewwwwww…)
Repeat, having the children suggest other things that might
blow away!
Leaves … papers … umbrellas … trash cans … the roof … etc.
Mister Moon
Mister Moon, Mister Moon, you're up too soon
The sun is still in the sky
Go back to bed and cover up your head
And wait 'til the day goes by.
Songs for Children – Course 38
Well I know we can make things work
He's got a good family since
His mother was a frog from Philadelphia
His daddy an enchanted prince
The neighbors are against it, it's clear to me
And it's probably clear to you
They think value on their property
Will go right down
If the family next door is blue
Well I'm in love with a big blue frog
A big blue frog loves me
I've got a tattoo on my chest
That says P-H-R-O-G, that's frog to me
P-H-R-O-G
Bicycle Built for Two
There is a flower within my heart,
Daisy, Daisy!
Planted one day by a glancing dart,
Planted by Daisy Bell!
Whether she loves me or loves me not,
Sometimes it's hard to tell;
Yet I am longing to share the lot Of beautiful Daisy Bell!
Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do
I’m half crazy all for the love of you
It won’t be a stylish marriage
I can’t afford a carriage
But you’ll look sweet
Upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

Mango Fandango
Chorus:
Mama! Mama! I want a mango
Papa! Papa! Please, papaya.
No, no Nana, a ripe banana
Kiwi kiwi kiwi kiwi quince!
Red berries, berries blue
These are fruits so good for you
Cherries, cherries sweet and new
And coconuts yes they’re fruit too!
Chorus
Orange oranges, lemons yellow
Fill my tummy sweet and mellow
Vitamins grown on a tree
In pretty packages for you and me.
Chorus
Oh they travel many miles
Fill our hearts with many smiles
Sweet delicious tasty treats
From Mother Nature a gift to eat
Baby Beluga
Baby Beluga in the deep blue sea
Swim so wild and you swim so free
Heaven above and the sea below
And a little white whale on the go!
Baby Beluga! Baby Beluga!
With tomorrow’s sun, another day’s begun
You’ll soon be waking.
Baby Beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free,
Heaven above and the sea below
And a little white whale on the go!
You’re just a little white whale on the go!
Autumn Time
Autumn leaves are turning, turning, turning
Autumn fires are burning, burning, burning
Days of in between
See the changing scene
Autumn time is all around
Summer birds are flying, flying, flying
Summer flowers are dying, dying. dying
Days of in between
See the changing scene
Autumn time is all around
Winter winds are coming, coming, coming
No more insects humming, humming, humming
Days of in between
See the changing scene
Autumn time is all around
Autumn leaves are falling, falling, falling
Hear the barn owl calling, calling, calling
Days of in between
See the changing scene
Autumn time is all around
Baby Beluga! Baby Beluga!
Is the water warm? Is your mother home
With you so happy?
Way down yonder where the dolphins play
Where you dive and splash all day
Waves roll in and the waves roll out
See the water squirtin’ out of your spout!
Baby Beluga! Baby Beluga!
Sing your merry song; sing with all your friends,
We like to hear you!
When it’s dark and you’re home and fed
Curled up snug in your water bed
Moon is shining and the stars are out
Good night, little whale, good night!

A Place in the Choir
All God’s critters got a place in the choir
Some sing low, some sing higher
Some sing out loud on the telephone wire
Some just clap their hands, or paws,
Or anything they got!
Listen to the bass, it’s the one on the bottom
Where the bullfrog croaks
And the hippopotamus
Moans and groans with a big to-do
And the old cow just goes moo
The dogs and the cats they take up the middle
The hummingbird hums
And the cricket fiddles
The donkey brays and the pony neighs
And the old coyote howls
Listen to the top where the little birds sing
On the melody with the high notes ringing
The hoot owl hollers over everything
And the jay bird disagrees
Singing in the nighttime, singing in the day
The little duck quacks and is on his way
The possum ain’t got much to say
And the porcupine talks to himself
It’s a simple song, a song everywhere
By the ox and the fox and the grizzly bear
The grumpy alligator and the hawk above
The sly raccoon and the turtle dove
Repeat first verse to finish.
You can also substitute “Earth’s” for “God’s” for
secular/non-religious classrooms.
Chorus:
He goes wa-wa-wa-waltzing
Waltzing with bears,
Raggy bears, baggy bears, shaggy bears, too.
There’s nothing on earth Uncle Walter won’t do
So he can go waltzing
Wa-wa-wa waltzing
Wa-wa-wa waltzing, go waltzing with bears.
We bought Uncle Walter a new coat to wear
But when he came home it was covered with hair
And lately I’ve noticed there’re several new tears
I’m sure Uncle Walter’s been waltzing with bears.
Chorus
We told Uncle Walter that he should be good
And do all the things we said that he should
But I know he’d rather be off in the woods
I’m afraid that we’ll lose Uncle Walter for good
Chorus
We begged & we pleaded, oh please won’t you stay
And managed to keep him at home for a day
But the bears all barged in
And they took him away
Now he’s dancing with pandas
And he won’t understand us
And the bears all demand at least one dance a day
Chorus
The Helping Song
Agatha Fry, she made a pie
And Christopher John helped bake it
And Christopher John he mowed the lawn
And Agatha Fry helped rake it.
Now Zackary Zug took out a rug
And Jennifer Joy helped shake it
And Jennifer Joy she made a toy
And Zackary Zug helped break it
Waltzing with Bears
I went to his room in the middle of the night
I crept to his side and I turned on the light
And to my surprise he was nowhere in sight
‘Cos my Uncle Walter goes waltzing with bears
Songs for Children – Course 38
And some kid of help
Is the kind of help
That helping’s all about!
And some kind of help
Is the kind of help….we all can do without!

Robin in the Rain
Ten Horses
Ten horses came galloping into town
Five were black and five were brown
They galloped up they galloped down
And then they galloped out of town
Clip clop, clip clop clip clop clip clop
Clip clop, clip clop clip clop clip clop
Robin in the rain
What a saucy fellow,
Robin the in rain
Mind your socks of yellow
Running in the garden on your nimble feet
Digging for your dinner with your long, strong, beak.
No horses came galloping into town
None were black and none were brown
None galloped up, none galloped down
And then none galloped out of town!
Robin in the rain,
You don’t mind the weather,
Showers only make you gay.
But the worms are wishin’
You would stay at home
Robin on a rainy day
(Don’t get your feet wet!)
Robin on a rainy day!
Story about Sammy
Spring is Here
This is a story ‘bout Sammy
His father sent him out to buy bread
But Sammy didn’t feel like walking
He thought he would hop instead
And said
Spring is here, said the bumblebee
How do you know, said the old oak tree
I just saw a daffodil
Dancing like a fairy on a windy hill
If I were a rabbit I would hop to the store
Hop to the store, hop to the store
If I were a rabbit I would hop to the store
Hop to the store for my father
Snowman
Repeat for even numbers (ie: four were black
and four were brown) down to none:
Repeat with other motions for animals.
End with:
Then Sammy remembered
About the loaf of bread
And he knew that he had to get along
And so he went off to the store
And he sang a brand new song
And he said
Build a little snowman round and fat
Find a carrot nose and an old silk hat
Now my little snowman won’t you stay?
Out comes the sun and you melt away.
I’m glad I’m me and I’m walking to the store
Walking to the store, walking to the store
I’m glad I’m me and I’m walking to the store
Walking to the store for my father.

Call:
Do you know the muffin man?
The muffin man, the muffin man?
Do you know the muffin man,
Who lives on Drury Lane?
Answer:
Yes I know the muffin man
The muffin man, the muffin man
Yes, I know the muffin man
Who lives on Drury Lane.
The Game:
Select one child to sit in the middle of the group and
either close their eyes or be blindfolded. Sing the muffin
man song, then point to one child to give the reply. Once
that child has replied, invite the child in the middle to
either point or say the name of the child that they thing
sung the reply.
Sidewalks of New York
East side, west side
All around the town
The kids played ring-around-rosie,
London Bridge is falling down.
Boys and girls together
Me and Daisy O’Rourke.
We tripped the light fantastic
On the sidewalks of New York.

Morningtown Ride
My Roots Grow Down
Train whistle blowing makes a sleepy noise
Underneath their blankets
Go all the girls and boys
Heading from the station, out along the bay,
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away.
My roots grow down, down to the ground
My roots grow down, down to the ground
My roots grow down, down to the ground
My roots grow down.
Driver at the engine, Fireman rings the bell
Sandman swings the lantern
To show that all is well
Rocking, rolling, riding, out along the bay
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away
Maybe it is raining where our train will ride
But all the little travelers
Are warm and snug inside
Somewhere there is sunshine
Somewhere there is day
Somewhere there is Morningtown
Many miles away.
I am a pine tree on a mountaintop
I am a pine tree on a mountaintop
I am a pine tree on a mountaintop
My roots grow down.
Other verses, or make up your own!
-- I am an oak tree in a grassy field
-- I am an aspen quaking in the breeze
-- I am a willow swaying in a storm
-- I am a wildflower reaching for the sun
This Pretty Planet
This pretty planet, spinning through space
You're a garden, you're a harbor
You're a holy place.
Golden sun going down
Gentle blue giant, spin us around.
All through the night
Safe 'till the morning light.
Simple Gifts
'Tis the gift to be simple,
'Tis the gift to be free.
'Tis the gift to come down
Where we ought to be.
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend
We shall not be ashamed.
To turn, turn, will be our delight,
'Till by turning, turning , we come round right.
Songs for Children – Course 38

You're a garden, you're a harbor
You're a holy place.

Dandelion Song
-Linda Allen, Kristin and Jennifer Allen-Zito
Bling Blang
-by Arlo Guthrie
Well, flowers come in green and pink and red,
And they sleep all day in their little flowerbeds,
But the little dandelion grows wild and free
With her uncles and her cousins and the whole family.
CHORUS:
CHO: Dandy, dandy, dandy, dandy dandelion,
There's something pretty dandy 'bout you.
Dandy, dandy, dandy, dandy dandelion,
I wish that there were more of you.
First I make a wish, then I blow real hard,
And the little dandelions blow all over the yard,
And I wait and I hope for my wish to come true.
Guess there's only so much a dandelion can do.
Now in 1800 things were bleak and bare,
Not a little dandelion anywhere,
But Cathy Maynard knew that dandelions cure,
So she brought them to Washington, and we thank her.
Some people think that dandelions are a pest,
But I think that dandelions are the best.
Dandelions, don't you know, are really cool,
And dandelion haters should go back to school.
Bling Blang, hammer with my hammer
Zingo Zango cutting with my saw
Bling Blang, hammer with my hammer
Zingo Zango cutting with my saw
You get a hammer and I’ll get a nail
You catch a bird and I’ll catch a snail
You bring a board and I’ll bring a saw
We’ll build a house for the baby-o
CHORUS
Run and bring rocks and I’ll bring some bricks
A nice little house we’ll build and fix
We’ll jump inside when the cold win blows
And kiss our pretty little baby-o’s
CHORUS
You grab some mud and I’ll grab some clay
And when it rains it won’t wash away
We’ll build a house that will be so strong
The wind will sing our baby a song
Bird in a Tree (Andrea’s song)
You can make them into necklaces and bracelets too.
You can decorate your laces to tie your shoe.
You can make them into salad greens or dandelion tea.
That's why dandelions are for me.
There was one little bird
Living in a tree
She/he was all alone and did not want to be
And so she/he flew far away
Over the sea
And brought back a friend to live in the tree
There were two little birds
Living in a tree
They were all alone and did not want to be
And so they flew far away
Over the sea
And brought back a friend to live in the tree
Yada yada…
There were thirty little birds living in a tree
They were all together and as happy as can be!

Jack o Lantern
Jack o Lantern, Jack o Lantern
You are such a funny sight
As you sit there in the window
Looking out at the night
You were once a tiny pumpkin
Growing on a sturdy vine
Now you are a Jack o Lantern
Let your candlelight shine
