I
n a world that seems to be growing increasingly more complex, I find myself
looking for and appreciating the simple things in life: the familiarity of routine,
the comfort of family and friends and the contagious playfulness of a child.
By now, you’ve probably seen our new television commercials or print
advertisements that focus on just that: simplicity. We are very proud of the ads
because they capture the heart and expertise of Cook Children’s, the essence of
childhood and our promise. The premise behind this new campaign is pretty
straight forward. Childhood is simple until your child gets sick and life gets
complicated. And when it does, you can count on Cook Children’s.
Just as important, we know that we can count on the community to help us keep
our promise. We strive to make the act of giving to Cook Children’s simple, but rest
assured that the impact your support has on our patients is anything but.
Your support comes in many forms. In this issue, we tell the stories of donors who
support Cook Children’s in a variety of different ways. It may be a birthday gift
for a loved one, a tribute to a colleague whose dedication inspires you or it may be
volunteering your time to enhance the patient experience. But the motivation for
each of you is the same – the simple desire to give back.

TO CARE FOR THE STAFF MEMBERS WHO CARE FOR OUR PATIENTS.
I
t takes special people with big hearts to care for
sick kids. And many of those special people work
at Cook Children’s. Day after day, they treat and
heal the patients that walk through our doors with
compassion and warmth. No day is the same; every
child is different and the outcomes are varying. So when
our staff members experience trying times, bad days
and heartaches, who is there to care for them? As staff
care chaplain, it’s Cameron Brown who cares for our
caregivers.

talk about their day,” Cameron
says.

Cameron oversees the Tea Cart Ministry, and it is exactly
what it sounds like. A cart. With tea cups that have been
donated by some of Cook Children’s most devoted
supporters and staff, or hand painted by patients. She
takes the cart to departments and offices throughout
Cook Children’s Health Care System and not just within
the walls of the medical center. She serves tea and visits
with staff, allowing them to share with her any stresses or
concerns they may have, or to simply take much-needed
breaks from their daily routines.
It is also during the most difficult times for our staff
that Cameron is there for them. Because Cook Children’s
often treats patients who are incredibly sick or severely
injured, the outcomes are not always positive. These
incidents can be emotionally taxing and difficult for our
staff, not just the families, to process.
Cameron trains the Child Life specialists to facilitate
critical incident stress management with patients and
families, which she learned in her other role as a Fort
Worth firefighter. She also trains staff to be peer support
counselors and provides them with journals to encourage
them to write about what they’re feeling. She organizes
debriefings for staff after particularly traumatic patient
encounters.
The debriefings can be requested by any staff member,
and includes each individual involved in the incident.
From the 911 operator who took the call, the first
responder on the scene, Emergency Department nurses
and environmental services employees and chaplains –
anyone and everyone who played a role in the incident
is invited to attend. They gather and share their pieces of
the story, and let each other know that they are not alone
in their feelings.
Cameron has devoted her entire life to helping people
as a firefighter, crisis counselor and chaplain. She
received an associate degree in fire science from Tarrant

County College, followed by a bachelor’s degree in
social work with a minor in psychology from Texas
Christian University (TCU). She stayed at TCU to
obtain a master of divinity in pastoral counseling
and finally a doctor of ministry degree in pastoral
counseling.
She was an Air Force firefighter from 1979 to 1983,
which included a stint in Okinawa, Japan. Once back
in the states, she was stationed at Carswell Air Force
Base in Fort Worth and, at the urging of the Fort
Worth fire chief, became a firefighter in Fort Worth,
where she has been for more than 30 years.
Along with her role as firefighter and EMT in Fort
Worth, Cameron served as the department’s chaplain
and director of health, fitness and crisis management.
In May of this year, she was named Firefighter of the
Year for the Fort Worth Fire Department.
As a firefighter, Cameron became known for her
ability to help people cope after a disaster. When the
Fort Worth Fire Department became only the second
organization in the nation to teach and facilitate
Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISDs), she was
asked to be a part of the team.
Since learning how to lead CISDs, she has facilitated
more than 600 formal debriefings and countless
defusing and demobilizations. These took place
following the 9/11 attacks, the crash of Delta 191;
Hurricanes Andrew, Katrina, Gustav and Ike; the
Branch Davidian incident in Waco, the shootings at
Wedgewood Baptist, the Fort Worth courthouse, the
Luby’s in Killeen and most recently, the fertilizer plant
explosion in West.
Cameron first came to Cook Children’s as an intern
when she was working on her bachelor’s degree in
social work. She quickly fit in and found working
with children and their families rewarding. When an
opportunity to join Cook Children’s came up in 2009,
Brown jumped at the chance. Although this time it
would require working with the staff, she wanted to
be a part of the Cook Children’s family.
She continues to serve as a full-time firefighter
while working at Cook Children’s part time. After a
lifetime of caring for others as a first responder and
chaplain, she says, her “roads have come together and
have been illuminated.”

rior to joining the
Cook Children’s family as
an anesthesiologist in 2001,
Sam Kleinman, M.D., was working
in El Paso, Texas, an area that didn’t
have centralized pediatric specialty
care at the time. It was there he
discovered that caring for kids was
his professional calling.
That previous experience allowed
Dr. Kleinman to truly appreciate the
uniqueness of Cook Children’s. Here,
at Cook Children’s, we only focus on
pediatrics. We cover many specialties,
and we do it all very well.
“Having Cook Children’s in our
community is like having a winning
lottery ticket in your top drawer that
says ‘your child is sick – go straight
to Cook Children’s,’” Dr. Kleinman
explains. “Until you have to ‘cash in’
on the services that Cook Children’s
offers, you don’t know the true value
of that ticket.”
Dr. Kleinman has been a faithful
supporter of Cook Children’s since
2001. For him and his family, the
decision to give to Cook Children’s is
an easy one. He equates it to buying
an insurance policy for their children,
grandchildren, great grandchildren
and so on. He gives because he wants
to keep that winning lottery ticket in
his top drawer – and every other top
drawer in our community.
In a changing health care
environment, there are uncertainties
as to how pediatric health care will
continue to be funded. He believes
that donating to Cook Children’s
helps ensure the stability of the
system.
For Dr. Kleinman, giving is also
very personal.
“I give what I can out of
appreciation for those
that I work with every
day, and on behalf of
those who can’t give
as much as they would
like,” he says.
But it’s not just the staff at
Cook Children’s that inspires
Dr. Kleinman; it is also the patients.
Over the past 12 years as a physician
here, Dr. Kleinman has cared for
many children. He watches as each of
them are welcomed into
Cook Children’s with open arms. He
sees staff at every level become a part
of the caregiving team. He watches
some walk out of Cook Children’s,
Dr. Kleinman
and he knows that some never will.

ohn and Shirley Dean have had many happy years together.
In fact, their marriage has spanned nearly four decades. They
have given each other a variety of different gifts to celebrate
anniversaries and birthdays over the years. They have opened their fair
share of ties, jewelry and gift cards.
But for John’s birthday last year, Shirley wanted to give him a
meaningful gift that could be celebrated and appreciated by more than
just the two of them. She wanted to give something that would make a
difference in the lives of others.
For thirty years, the Deans have been active members of Jewel Charity,
which directly supports Cook Children’s. Shirley has become very
familiar with our organization and our promise, so she decided to make
a gift in John’s honor to the Cook Children’s Hematology and Oncology
Center.
A few months later, having been inspired by Shirley’s gift and the
desire to do something just as thoughtful for her, John made a gift to the
Cook Children’s Hematology and Oncology Center in honor of Shirley’s
birthday.
“It’s very humbling to have someone love you that much,” Shirley said.
“A child with cancer is at the beginning of life. Seeing that is painful to
my heart. We wanted to give to a facility that is able to give these kids
lifetimes of adventures. The kids here should be doing something else.
They should be off being kids.”
The Deans believe in and support Cook Children’s promise “because of
the kids.” They have seen the need and feel compelled to help. For them,
their birthday gifts to each other were the best gifts that they could have

Founded in 2009 by longtime friends, Brett Brier
and Cole Ballweg, the concept of family was part
of the foundation on which the company was built.
Vivicare later added Lisa Upchurch and Dave Reed as
partners, and together with their staff members, they
offer private duty nursing services to families across
the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“When we started Vivicare, we knew that charitable
giving would be one of our founding principles,”
explains Ballweg. “We looked into starting our own
foundation until we realized that is outside our core
competencies. Cook Children’s has some of the most
professional, creative and accommodating staff that
we have ever encountered. They know how to make
our dollars work for the community we care about
most. Our patients, families and nurses take great
pride in knowing that their choice to be a part of
Vivicare is directly benefiting a place that has touched
their lives in countless ways.”
Their entire team lives the principle of “Shared
Value,” which means they recognize their
responsibility to the greater community. It is in
their DNA to strengthen the health care ecosystem
by providing innovative care and supporting great
organizations like Cook Children’s. That is why
they chose to support Cook Children’s through a
gift to the Case Management department. The Case
Management department works with patient families
to address their non-clinical needs, like how they are
going to purchase their child’s medication or making
sure they have somewhere to go when they leave the
medical center.

would want for our own families,” explains Ballweg.
“For us, the work we do is personal. We don’t have
employees; we have partners. We don’t have clients;
we have families. I think we align perfectly with the
Cook Children’s promise to ‘improve the health of
every child,’ as that is what we try to do every day. “

explains Brier.

Dirty Scurry
The Dirty Scurry, hosted by PT Fitness, is a 1.2 mile fun run for kids, with lots of muddy
obstacles along the course. Proceeds from this event support Cook Children’s Sports
Performance Orthopedic Rehab Team Specialists (SPORTS) and childhood obesity
prevention programs. The third annual event on April 27 raised $20,000.

BRIGGS BERRY IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE TEENAGE BOY.
B
HE IS THE TYPE OF TEENAGER PARENTS ASPIRE TO HAVE IN THEIR OWN FAMILIES.
riggs was born with X-linked hyper IgM syndrome,
which means he has no immune system to help his
body fight off infections. If Briggs is exposed to any
illness, bacterial issue or fungus, it could be life threatening.
He takes daily medications and until a few months ago, Briggs
would visit Cook Children’s outpatient clinics to receive
monthly infusions. He is now able to give himself those
injections.
Despite his condition, Briggs never lets the limitations of
his syndrome slow him down or stop him from dreaming big,
for himself or for others. He is a dedicated young man who
is consistently recognized for his outstanding leadership, no
matter what kind of activity he’s doing.
For almost 10 years, Briggs has been pursuing one of his
greatest passions – golf. The high school senior competes in
local tournaments and is a member of the Granbury High
School varsity golf team. Briggs bases his golf game on
patience, honesty and integrity. And that’s also how he lives
his life.
Knowing what it’s like to be a patient at
Cook Children’s, Briggs wants to help other
kids in similar situations. He strives to make
Cook Children’s a fun place for them to be,
during circumstances that sometimes aren’t
Briggs is a founding member of the Youth Advisory Council
– Patients Advising for Change (YAC-PAC) and is currently
serving as vice president. He also is serving as vice president
of the YAC-PAC Leadership and helped plan and design the
Child Life Zone Teen Room, which opened last year. Briggs
helped found Camp Immunodeficiency (Camp ID). The
summer camp brings together kids with immune deficiencies,
so they can be around friends who know exactly what they are
going through, all while fishing, rock climbing and doing other
typical camp activities.
The leadership Briggs exhibits is a reflection of his parents,
Everett and DeAnna Berry. They both serve on several Family
Advisory Council committees at Cook Children’s. This family
is committed to improving the lives of the children and
families at Cook Children’s.
Earlier this year, Briggs was chosen to be the Children’s
Miracle Network Hospitals Champion Child for the state of
Texas, an honor he truly deserves. Later this fall, he and his
family will travel to Florida for the Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals National Conference and then go on to Washington,
D.C., where he and the other Champion Children will have the
distinguished privilege of meeting President Barack Obama.
Briggs is a courageous, caring young man who has, over the
course of several years, made a positive difference in the lives
of patients at Cook Children’s.

CONDUCTED FROM 2004-2008. THE IMRI ALLOWS
NEUROSURGEONS TO SEE IMAGES OF THE PATIENT’S
BRAIN DURING SURGERY. THIS TECHNOLOGY HAS
REVOLUTIONIZED THE TREATMENT OF CHILDREN WITH

patients a year in the Emergency Department.
Plans are currently underway for a new Emergency
Department that will be designed to increase
efficiencies, reduce wait times and allow children
to be seen by physicians faster.

DOES YOUR CHILD NEED URGENT OR EMERGENCY CARE?
It’s 10 p.m., on a Friday night and your child complains of a sore throat. You don’t want to wait until the next day, but
you don’t think it’s an emergency. Now what?
If it was an emergency, go straight to the emergency room. But, if your child doesn’t have life-threatening symptoms,
an urgent care center may be more convenient and a better choice for your family.
It’s important for parents to know when they should take their child to an urgent care center. The following lists
should help identify those differences:

Urgent Care
Emergency Department
Urgent care situations are illnesses or injuries
that need medical attention. Examples include:
• Ear infections/pain
• Strep/sore throats
• Cold symptoms
• Flu
• Mild dehydration
• Respiratory illnesses – including
respiratory syncytial virus (RSV),
bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia and
asthma without severe breathing difficulty
• Sprains and possibly broken bones
• Minor cuts
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Infected bug bites
• Foreign body removal (marbles, beans and
other interesting things)
• Urinary infection symptoms
• Pinworms, ringworm, rashes and pink eye
• Painful muscle strains
• Head injuries without loss of
consciousness or vomiting
An emergency is a medical problem that could cause death
or permanent injury if not treated right away, such as:
• Severe bleeding that does not stop after 15 minutes of
direct pressure
• Severe allergic reactions and/or breathing problems
• Coughing up or vomiting blood
• Sudden severe joint pain with swelling
• Insect stings accompanied by breathing difficulties
• Swallowing poison or choking
• Not being able to move or speak
• Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
• Gaping wound (edges won’t come together)
• Head injury with loss of consciousness, vomiting or
causing dizziness/confusion
• Obviously broken bones or dislocated joints
• Fever in infants who are under 8 weeks old
• Diabetes/blood sugar issues
