A tremendous amount of growth and change has occurred over the last decade. Ten years ago we still relied on “snail mail” primarily to deliver our press releases, which are now sent electronically and through social media. Omaha Children’s Museum did not exist I would highlight “partner” as the definition of our year on Facebook, Twitter, or anything related to an e-blast, relying heavily on printed collateral to alert our visitors of our upcoming events. In 2012, the museum welcomed over 250,000 visitors through our doors, a number that seemed lofty when I was interviewed for this 1 position back in 2002. When asked directly, “How many visitors do you think Omaha Children’s Museum should be reaching?” I blurted out “a quarter of a million” before I even realized what I was saying. The benefit of hindsight has proven that goal was attainable and sustainable as we have welcomed around a “quarter of a million visitors” annually since our renovation of exhibits in 2007. Our commitment to segmenting the audience of children and focusing on delivering exhibit and program experiences targeted at the early childhood years has been another factor that has positioned the museum for success. We’ve grown our household membership base to over 8,000 families and each year we have a net gain of new families who find our programs fit their need to spend quality family time together. If I were to choose one word that would define the past year and the decade leading up to it, I would highlight “partner” as the definition of our year. Our community engaged exhibit process delivered the most popular exhibit to date in Itty Bitty City and included a record number of over 30 partners involved in the support, design, creation, and execution of the exhibit. We took partnering to a new level as we co-developed The Moral Superheroes with the Business Ethics Alliance, representing the first time we developed a program whose ownership remained with the originating partner. My son, who turned ten in 2012, is maturing into his pre-teen years. He has been raised alongside the “big brother” of Omaha Children’s Museum, which has been on an incredible journey of maturation as well. I am proud of the babies I have been entrusted to raise and so thrilled to share the happy results of raising OCM to face the next stage of growth that lies ahead, just as I prepare my son to complete his elementary years and wander into middle school ready for the challenges ahead. Both have been put on a path that will ultimately lead to future success and both will continue to need support and guidance along the way. For that I am grateful to the many supporters EXECUTIVE who have committed to being a part DIRECTOR of their success. TOTAL VISITORS 253,311 Annual Attendance The museum had another successful year of attendance with 253,311 people visiting, 28% of those from outside the Omaha Metropolitan Area. This makes Omaha Children’s Museum the most visited museum and the second highest attended arts and cultural attraction in the state, second only to Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium. The museum had another successful year of membership growth with over 8,000 member families. Strategy 28% of visitors from outside of the Omaha Metro TOTAL MEMBER FAMILIES 8,292 In 2012, the museum brought to life its strategic planning initiatives through community partnerships, permanent exhibits, and daily programming. This collaborative effort between community members, the museum’s Board of Directors and staff has helped Our strategy consists of four values: fun, growth, respect and well-being Omaha Children’s Museum define its organizational values and plan for future success. Our strategy consists of four values: fun, growth, respect and well-being and our strategy is defined by our desire to provide educational and memorable experiences for children and their families. 2 What do you want to be when you grow up? In 2012, Omaha Children’s Museum introduced a new permanent exhibit, Fantastic Future Me, an interactive program designed to encourage inspiration and hope in children by allowing them to see themselves in a positive future role. having fun. Fantastic Future Me was inspired by Omaha Children’s Museum’s work with Dr. Shane Lopez, Gallup Senior Scientist and an architect of the Gallup Student Poll. Omaha Children’s Museum partners with Gallup, Nebraska Educational Savings Trust and Phenomblue to help children achieve their dreams through hope. Using a large touch screen and camera, children take a photo of themselves, creating a “Future Me” avatar they can customize with elements representing various careers and grown up roles. Research done by the Gallup organization shows that excitement about the future and thinking about yourself in a positive role creates hope. Fantastic Future Me helps children do all of this while One BIG Summer “The future pulls children forward.” -Dr. Shane Lopez The Gallup Organization 3 On May 26, Omaha Children’s Museum kicked off its summer blockbuster exhibit, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with its second annual children’s parade sponsored by Oriental Trading Company. Over 150 children and their families marched down 20th street dressed as Dorothy, the Tin Man and many other Oz character favorites. Presented by Borsheim’s and based off of L. Frank Baum’s classic original fairytale, this exhibit featured a giant bubble pit, hot air balloon, flying monkeys, an emerald city, twister town and other fun activities A Year of Programming Firsts 2012 marked the start of successful new programming here at Omaha Children’s Museum. Pirates Adventures A new wave of swashbuckling fun took over the museum’s Cobweb Castle in October with our first annual evening Pirate Adventures. Children and families were introduced to Omaha Children’s Museum’s very own resident pirate, Charlotte Longbeard, while partaking in an evening filled with treasure hunts, sword fighting, sea chants, and more! Fairytale Summer Summer kicked off the start of our Fairytale Theater programming and our popular evening Fairytale Teas. Princess Poppy along with her friends Princess Rose and Princess Lily, gave children a firsthand look at what it is like to be a Fairytale Princess or a Knight in shining armor along with whimsical programming focused around etiquette and classic fairytale stories. Santa’s Magic The holiday’s got a little brighter at Omaha Children’s Museum with the opening of Santa’s Magic. The Santa’s Magic experience begins with a colorful holiday light show where kids can dance and sing along with Santa’s elves while learning about the spirit of the holiday season. Following the light show, snow begins to fall in our winter wonderland as Santa comes down the chimney and later greets each child individually by name. This programming was made possible through the generous support of Mike and Susan Lebens. “We are thrilled to be a part of the Santa’s Magic programming at Omaha Children’s Museum. This unique holiday experience truly enriches the timeless tradition of visiting with Santa and we hope this will become a family tradition for many years to come.” –Susan and Mike Lebens Janet Strauss, Santa Claus and Susan and Mike Lebens ABOVE: Princess Poppy and a princess in training at a Fairytale Tea event LEFT: Princess Rose, Princess Poppy and Princess Lily 4 Community-Engaged Collaborations The museum closed out 2012 with the success of two more community-engaged exhibits, Construction Zone: Return of the Bulldozer and Itty Bitty City. Building upon the success of the original Construction Zone, the museum opened its third community-engaged exhibit, Construction Zone: Return of the Bulldozer, in February 2012. Sponsored in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, this exhibit provided hands on activities such as painting, concrete mixing, woodworking and much more. This community-built exhibit featured a performing arts stage, an airport, a life-sized city bus and a team of Moral Superheroes educating children on how to make ethical decisions as part of everyday life. The community-engaged exhibit initiative involves local businesses and organizations in the creation and building of the museum’s traveling exhibits. In 2012, collaboration between the Business Ethics Alliance and Omaha Children’s Museum took this a step further with the creation of our Itty Bitty City Moral Superheroes, a team of ethical crusaders whose educational value expands beyond the museum walls. The educational message transpired through these superheros will continue to play an integral role in educational youth programming for years to come. To prepare, the museum undergoes an intensive cleaning process advised by medical partners throughout the community. As the number of children diagnosed with Autism increases each year, the museum, in collaboration with Autism Action Partnership, has designed three special events specifically for children on the Autism Spectrum. These events are designed to provide a fun and welcoming environment and helpful information for children and their families. Omaha Children’s Museum expanded upon its current partner school program to include nine Council Bluffs public schools. As part of this program, Omaha Children’s Museum served over 1,700 children from thirteen schools in preschool through 2nd grade. Repeat visitation and exposure to the museum's programming and exhibits has been recognized among educators as positively enhancing classroom curriculum, creating more confident and engaged learners. Children with suppressed immune systems have the opportunity to visit the museum as part of the Carefree Kids event Exhibits and activities like face-painting stations are specially prepared for Carefree Kids events by staff and volunteers. There’s no place like... Omaha Children’s Museum! The Rainbow Connectors Guild planned the annual For the Kids Benefit that created a magical and memorable experience for all in attendance and raised over $250,000 for the museum. The event, themed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was chaired by Kara Krehbiel, Christine Stokes and Samantha Wahl. Honorary chairs were Steve Martin and Amy Haddad along with corporate sponsor Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska. 2012 Event Chairs FROM LEFT: Christine Stokes, Samantha Wahl and Kara Krehbiel with The Wizard of Oz characters FROM LEFT: Lindy Hoyer, Jeff Barnhart and Honorary Chairs Steve Martin and Amy Haddad with characters from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the annual For the Kids Benefit 11 The museum raised $ over at the annual For the Kids Benefit 250,000 The Road is Best Travelled with Friends Omaha Children’s Museum honors the late Ann Goldstein and Gallup at the annual Great Friends to Kids luncheon. This luncheon recognizes individuals and organizations who strive to make the Omaha community a better place for children to learn and grow. This year's Great Friend to Omaha Children’s Museum was given to the late Ann Goldstein and the Great Friend to Kids award was given to Gallup. Ann Goldstein was a longtime supporter and champion of Omaha Children’s Museum. Ann’s leadership and enthusiasm for the museum inspired many others and made the museum a place filled with hope, fun and excitement that remains today. At Omaha Children’s Museum, Gallup has become an instrumental partner, helping to infuse the museum with its visionary research and expertise, ultimately creating a better, more hopeful future for kids. Gallup’s dedication to the education of our youth makes them an invaluable partner not only to the museum, but to the Omaha community as a whole.
