LIVING SPACE
To prevent furniture from ‘floating’
around, there are a few tricks you
can use to ground your furniture.
This creates imaginary lines that
designate where the living room
ends and the dining room starts.
2
1. Rug it up
Placing a rug under your furniture
groups them together into distinct
areas. Rugs also help to make the
atmosphere warmer and softer.
1
LIVING SPACE
Spacing Out
2. Open your shelves
Use sideboards and open shelves
to create a wall between rooms
without isolating them. This
EXPEDIT shelf does even better
by serving as storage for both
sides of the room.

Don’t miss out
on all the action
If you’ve ever felt lonely in the kitchen while everyone is chatting in the living
room, or simply want to watch that TV show while eating, here’s a way out that
doesn’t involve buying another TV or dragging nervous friends into the kitchen.
After all, the living room does not need to be the room your TV lives in – it’s
where you live in. So why not combine your dining room with your living room?
And while you’re at it, what about knocking down the wall between them and
the kitchen as well?
Open-plan living gives you a larger, brighter and multifunctional space that lets
you host your large group of friends with ease (and maybe house one or two
for a night).
Get more living room inspiration from the new IKEA catalogue, page 148.
04 IKEA FAMILY news
Tip: Before you go around
knocking down walls for
an open-concept kitchen,
consider whether you want
the smell of food in your
living room. Good ventilation
and an extractor hood can
help you a lot here.
3. Back-to-back
It is not always necessary to back
your sofa up against a wall. In fact,
leaving the back of the sofa to face
an open area functions to divide
space just as well as shelves do.
4. Sheer Beauty
Curtains add richness and
warmth to any room. With a little
creativity, you can also use them
as room dividers. Sheer curtains
are especially unobtrusive at it too.

Breaking
the clutter
More functions, more mess. Books,
magazines, papers, set-top boxes,
DVDs, media players, remote
controls… they all seem to be
reproducing themselves endlessly.
Unfortunately, the only thing that
isn’t endless is storage space. As
your living room duties include
entertaining friends, relaxing, work
and sometimes dining, is it doomed
to be perpetually messy?
Not if you make your furniture work
for it.

There is something about sofas that tends to baffle
the wits out of us: they come in all kinds of sizes,
colours and materials: two-seats, three-seats,
loveseats, chaise lounge, sofa-beds; red, blue, white,
black, or all of the above; leather, velvet, cotton,
synthetic, natural… and as if that’s not enough, there
is the equally endless choice of cushions, covers,

Maybe that’s why they say we can’t have everything
in life. But if you can have something, why not make
it the best you can have? So here’s a little guide to
the centre-piece of your living room.
08 IKEA FAMILY news
IKEA FAMILY news 09
2. Who uses it will often determine the size and also
material choice. A loveseat is good if its just the two
of you, but a larger corner sofa can seat more people.
If you have children or see yourself eating on the
sofa often, choose a dark-coloured, stain-resistant,
removable and machine-washable cover instead of
leather. Reserve the velvets and silks for less-used
sofas as they wear out much quicker.
4. For some reason, people
like to sleep on the sofa.
Whether it is a voluntary
choice or caused by a domestic
disagreement, you may want to consider
a more versatile sofa-bed or a chaise
longue. That way you won’t wake up
between the sofa and coffee table with
a bruise on the back.
10 IKEA FAMILY news
3. Your room, your sofa, your style. In sofa
lingo, the legs, skirting and arms directly
translate into the look of your sofa. Skirted
sofas have a heavier, but also softer feel,
while round or tapered bare legs with
straight arms create a sleek modern look.
Curved wooden legs are more traditional
and stately and can be paired with a rolled
or curved English arm.
5. What’s inside your sofa is also important to its comfort. An eight-way
tied spring sofa with down cushions is way better than one filled with
upholstery foam and wire coils. Unfortunately, these may not be obvious
until you have used the sofa for quite some time, so check carefully when
choosing (this is also why IKEA sofas come with a 10-year guarantee).
LE
E TAB
COFFE
1. The whole point in buying a sofa is (usually) to use it, and this
should be as comfortable as your money can buy. Compared to
fabric sofas that stay at a neutral temperature, synthetic leather
sofas are often said to feel cool when first sat upon and give a
‘sticky’ feel after it warms up. Slight temperature differences
aside, leather sofas give a more refined look and can be just as, if
not more comfortable than fabric sofas.
SOFA
KLIPPAN two-seat sofa 16,990 THB

The Sofa Conundrum : Sofas
are meant to last; stains are
not. If you expect your fabric
sofa to be subject to heavy
use and abuse (i.e. have a
creative and colourful child),
choose one with a removable
cover so you can wash off
the stains. They’re good for a
quick new look at a fraction of
the cost too! Here are some
pointers to help you pick a
sofa. If you’re still undecided,
visit the IKEA store for more
inspiration!

AGE
A leather sofa does better at handling
stray strands of hair which tend to
stick to a fabric sofa. Unlike fabrics,
however, leather sofas often have
fixed covers, making them harder to
clean. Leather also stains more easily,
and can be much more expensive to
restore than fabrics.
Those with cats may want to
provide a scratching pole so they
are less inclined to try and shorten
their nails on your sparkling brand
new sofa. Kittens are also more
likely to scratch your leather sofa
as they may not be able to hold
their footing on the slippery leather
surface.
STOR
LIVING SPACE
Pet lovers generally have a harder
time choosing their sofas as pets
tend to do unexpected things
to them – shedding, scratching,

For fabric sofas, this may cause

1
• 2 medium onions, chopped
• 1 clove garlic, crushed
3
• 2 tablespoons plain flour
• 1 litre hot chicken stock
(or vegetable stock for vegans)
• 1 bay leaf
• ½ cup or 4 tablespoons cream
• Salt and freshly-ground pepper
Instructions:
Have a fika.
Take a break.
In Sweden it is common to invite
friends or family over to catch up
with each other after a long week’s
work. Accompanying the chat and
laughter are ly some light snacks
and beer. In autumn, however,
appetites grow as temperatures
begin to fall.
Swede kitchens tend to get a little
busier in autumn as most of the
activities and festivities in this
season revolve around food. From
the popular kräftskiva (crayfish
party) to the kannelbulensdag
(cinnamon bun day), it’s all about
enjoying nature’s gift with great
company. In such a fast-paced
world, taking some time off to relax
and eat well might be a good idea.
Plockasvamp (literally, mushroom
picking) is one oddly relaxing and
fun Swedish pastime. During the
season, families can often be seen
entering the forests with baskets
in hand. They would return late in
the afternoon, children skipping
happily along with their baskets full
of freshly picked mushrooms and a
handful of lingonberries. Fragrant
dishes with these fresh finds would
then be served for dinner.
Fortunately for us on this side of
the world, we too can enjoy a good
hot bowl of fresh mushroom soup.
Sure there are the canned instant
ones, but the real fun begins with
good company in the kitchen. Try it
yourself!
1.
Heat up the butter in a medium
pan. Cook the garlic and onions
until soft but not browned (5-6
minutes). Meanwhile, heat the
chicken stock in a separate pot.
An apple a day
keeps the doctor away.
An apple pie invites
him over.
In Sweden, the start of autumn also coincides with the harvest season
for apples. Ripened and ready to be savored after the warm summer, this
season is traditionally marked by baking Swedish apple pies served with
fragrant vanilla sauce.
2. Add the mushrooms, and cook
over a high heat for 3 minutes
while stirring.
In Norse folklore, apples traditionally symbolize fertility and hold a special
place in Swedish culture. So significant are they that dedicated apple
markets are actually set up across the country.
3. Sprinkle the flour over the
mushrooms, mix well to
combine and stir.
In Kivik, a region known for its apple orchards, the market even features
huge paintings made from none other than thousands of apples. Visitors can
try apples of all shades and sizes, fresh apple juice, ciders, and also try their
hands at picking apples.
4. Pour in the chicken stock and
bring to boil. Add the bay leaf
and simmer for 10 minutes
This is how life should be – savored, simple and sweet. Just like a ripe apple.
5. Place the soup in a food
processor and blend well till
smooth.
6. Remove the bay leaf and leave
the soup to cool for a few
minutes.
7. Rinse the saucepan and return to
soup, season with salt and
pepper and reheat until boiling.
8. Stir in the cream and enjoy!

THE NEVER ENDING LIST
Can the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in
Texas? Maybe, but definitely more likely so if it were not alone.
A Place
Like Home
Time and again we’ve seen how, with enough support, a simple
action or idea can transform itself into a revolution – Plato, Newton,
Einstein, Luther King Jr., Gandhi, Mandela, the list goes on.
So if you’ve ever felt too small, powerless and insignificant to
change anything, know that you too, can be part of this movement
towards sustainability.
1
Travelling all over the world has its
own shortcoming: sometimes you
simply miss home. For us, it is the
green meadows, the clear streams
we used to swim in and that magical
forest we so often defiantly ventured
into. That’s why we try to make
every place we’ve been to a little
bit more like home. Naturally then,
home is where our never ending list
starts from; but what does it mean
to live sustainably?
It’s not living in the dark.
We mean this literally and
figuratively. It is knowing the
environmental conditions around us
and doing something about it. It is
considering what impact our actions
have. It is living within our means
smartly, just like what the people of
Småland are known for.
16 IKEA FAMILY news
It’s not about the greens.
Yes, money is important. But living
sustainably need not be expensive,
nor should it be all about pennypinching. Instead, it is about
mindfulness. About your actions,
about others and about the many
alternatives in life.
With your help, we’ve done what
little we can: switching to LED and
energy-saving light bulbs, sorting
our waste and recycling, working
with responsible suppliers to ensure
the wood and cotton in our products
come from sustainable sources. We
use minimal or no packaging if we
can, and even our signature flatpacks is also a conscious effort to
reduce carbon footprint – the more
we can carry in a single-trip, the
less trips required.
You can make a difference too!
Join us in minimising our impact
on the environment and reduce
our carbon footprint together. Take
out free shuttle bus, reuse old
newspapers to wrap your glassware
in the store, recycle your old IKEA
catalogues, buy organic products
and UTZ-certified coffee from
Swedish Food Market, and say no to
plastic bags by using reusable bags
instead!

Spice up your living room with a bit of green! Potted
plants not only add colour (and a soothing, relaxing one
at that), they can also form a decorative centrepiece
and lower room temperatures. Since plants ‘recycle’
the carbon dioxide we exhale and produce oxygen in its
place, they also help to freshen up the air inside.
Combine greeneries with fabrics and muted brown
colours to get a rustic feel, or with white to create a
brighter space. Even a few potted flowers can add
an interesting element to your room. They’re good

A Forest for Rest
The seventh in the ‘Post Scriptum’ series, the IKEA PS 2012 collection
explores the boundaries between old and new, and between the present
and its possibilities. Novel materials such as wood-plastic and smaller
LED lights, for example, allows for innovative and clever furniture design.
If a tree falls in a
forest and no one
is around to hear
it, does it make a
sound?
This brand new collection has it all – lively colours, better, more
sustainable materials, simple and playful design, clear sleek lines and at
the heart of it all, a modern Swedish spirit.

In a light mood
A great alternative to save up on your electricity bill is to use
LED lights instead of normal incandescent bulbs. No longer
limited to the tiny diodes they used to be, LED-s are now
available in actual bulb-size bulbs you can use with your ceiling
and floor lamps.
Consuming 85% less energy, emitting less heat and lasting 20
times longer than incandescent bulbs, LEDs are also versatile
enough to allow new design forms, like the KLOR pendant lamp
here.
