U.S. Premiere SLEEPING BEAUTY Carlo Colla & Sons Marionette Company Milan, Italy November 1 – 10 At The New Victory Theater Part of “Italy in the U.S. 2013 – Year of Italian Culture” Director/Composer/Costume Designer Eugenio Monti Colla Music P. Tchaikovsky Scenery & Light Design Franco Citterio Technical Director Tiziano Marcolegio SLEEPING BEAUTY, a gem in the repertoire of Italy’s oldest and most respected classical marionette company Carlo Colla & Sons Marionette Company (Marionette Macbeth, New Vic 2007), tells the timeless tale of a princess and her prophesied slumber. With the accompaniment of Tchaikovsky’s score, three centuries of Italy’s rich cultural heritage are on dazzling display as more than 150 handmade marionettes, each with its own complete wardrobe of costumes, interpret Charles Perrault’s original 1697 fairy tale, “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.” In the late 1700s, Giovanbattista Colla used marionettes to entertain and educate his children in comedy, drama and the classic arts; five generations later, Carlo Colla & Sons Marionette 5 Company continues to spread the family story, enhance Italy’s artistically and culturally rich marionette tradition and encourage new works that employ the art of puppetry. This performance is part of “Italy in the U.S. 2013 – Year of Italian Culture,” under the auspices of The President of the Italian Republic and organized by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Italy in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture. Hidden within celestial shapes, each tiny treasure elicits wide-eyed wonder in this sweet reverie of life’s simplest pleasures. Presented at the ASSITEJ World Congress in Copenhagen and Malmo (2011), SONGS FROM ABOVE was created by Teater Refleksion and Teater My (meaning “theater micro”) of Denmark as theater on a small scale for very young children. Nominated for Denmark’s Reumert Awards for the creation of children’s shows, Teater Refleksion was established in 1990 as a puppet and animation theater.
