A Note from the Artistic Director
Last month, two
teenage girls here in
Washington State were
caught putting bleach
into their classmates’
shampoo and lotion.
This type of dangerous
and intimidating prank garners lots of
attention in the news. Whether it’s physical
violence or verbal put downs, bullying can
seem to be alarmingly pervasive in schools
and communities today.
Sociologists tell us that some of the
strictest hierarchies operate within the strata
of middle and high school social groups. The
dynamics and relationships found in Crash
play out in middle schools everywhere. While
the issues surrounding bullying are often
hard to discuss, Crash offers a funny, personal
story that explores these issues in a way that
resonates with adolescents. Students will
connect to these characters and their peer
group struggles.
Our world premiere production of Crash
is based on the popular book of the same
name by Jerry Spinelli. Jerry is a Newbery
Medal–winning writer who truly understands
young people. His messages are serious,
but shared with young audiences through
humor and identifiable characters. Jerry’s
story comes alive on stage through Y York’s
artful adaptation. We commissioned Y as the
playwright because of her skill at dramatizing
important works of literature. Her first play

Synopsis
Crash Coogan seems to have it all – good
grades, natural athleticism, popular friends. But
what he can’t seem to get is the attention of his
preoccupied father and the new girl in town,
Jane. Despite being the target of Crash’s bullying,
Penn Webb, his unconventional neighbor, enjoys
a happy life with a pet turtle, strong family
support and Jane’s friendship. Penn wants to
earn a coveted spot on the Penn Relays team to
honor his great grandfather. Crash wants to win
that spot just to prove he can. Things change
when his grandfather suffers a stroke and Crash
realizes finishing first isn’t the most important
thing. This production shares important insights
and demonstrates author Jerry Spinelli’s appeal to
older elementary students.

recently completed Pullman Porter Blues
with Seattle Repertory Theatre and Arena
Stage in Washington, DC, which earned
the Helen Hayes Nomination for
Outstanding Ensemble. Other recent
credits include This Wide Night with
Seattle Public Theatre (co-production with
The If Project and Footlight Award
recipient), Twelfth Night with Seattle
Shakespeare Company/Wooden O, and
Torso with Printer’s Devil Theatre. Emily
has appeared at Washington Ensemble
Theatre, Strawberry Theatre Workshop,
Capitol Hill Arts Center and with the
educational tour for Intiman and Book-It
Repertory Theatre. Emily is a former
member of Washington Ensemble Theatre
and Implied Violence. She appears
regularly in Ian Bell’s quarterly Seattle
Confidential at ACT and is a graduate of
Cornish College of the Arts.

Beth DeVries (Mom)
recently finished the
run of Next to

Balagan/
Contemporary
Classics, playing
the role of Diana, her most difficult and
highly rewarding role to date. Other
favorites include Eve in Children of Eden
(CLO); Sue in Snapshots (Village Theatre
and Theatreworks Palo Alto); and Laura
in Goblin Market (ACT). Beth has been
seen at Seattle Children’s Theatre in Time
Again in Oz and both productions of The
Wizard of Oz. She is honored to be working
for the first time under the direction of
Rita Giomi.
Quinn Franzen
(Crash) is thrilled to
be making his SCT
debut. A company
member of the Satori
Group, he was last
seen onstage in
reWilding. He performed as Romeo (R+J)
and Frank (Dirty Story) at the Intiman
Theatre Festival last summer. He also acted
in Satori’s Fabulous Prizes and Artifacts of
Consequence. He has trained with Freehold
Theatre, Pig Iron, The Market Theatre in
Johannesburg, and the London Academy of
Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Quinn
holds a BA in Theatre from Williams
College. He has endless gratitude for his
parents, Paul Palmore, and his extended
non-biological Satori family.

Seattle Children’s
Theatre after making
his SCT debut earlier
this season as Angelo in Danny, King of the
Basement. Ben is a graduate of Cornish
College of the Arts where he received his BFA
in Theatre. Some of his favorite roles include
Mercutio and The Nurse in Romeo and Juliet,
Hamlet in Hamlet, and Guiderius in
Cymbeline all at Seattle Shakespeare Co.,
Johnny Wheelwright in A Prayer for Owen
Meany (Book-it), and Young Doctor Larch in
the award winning production(s) of The Cider
House Rules Part 1 & 2 (Book-it). Ben will
appear next in The Financial Lives of the Poets
at Book-It Repertory in June. Much love to

Todd Jefferson
Moore (Scooter) is
delighted to return to
SCT after recently
appearing in this
season’s The Wizard of
Oz and The Edge of
Peace. This role adds to a long list of other
SCT characters that include among others a
frog, a rat, a dog, an owl, a lion, a tigger, a
donkey, a classy lady, several friends, fathers
and uncles, Santa Claus and Cyrano. Todd
occasionally performs for adults, most
recently in The Ramayana at ACT.
Sara MountjoyPepka (Understudy)
This is Sara’s first time
working with Seattle
Children’s Theatre
and she couldn’t be
happier! Favorite past
local and regional projects include: “Kitty” in
Book-It Repertory Theatre’s recent
adaptation of Anna Karenina; The Trial with
New Century Theatre Company; lead roles
in the new works A Mouse Who Knows
Me and the Gregory-Award-nominated Duel
of the Linguist Mages at Annex Theatre; and
the blissful summers she has spent outside
with Montana Shakespeare in the Parks,
Wooden O, and GreenStage. She is a
company member of Magic Circle Mime and
has performed family programs with
symphony orchestras across the U.S.,
Canada, Spain, and Taiwan. She is also an
Unexpected Productions ensemble member
and performs the improv-comedy
show TheatreSports most weekends at the
Market Theater in Pike Place Market.
Adam Standley
(Mike/Understudy) is
so very excited to be
making his Seattle
Children’s Theatre
debut. In Seattle,
Adam is proud to have
shared stages with award winning casts at
Seattle Shakespeare Company, Intiman, and
Washington Ensemble Theatre. As a
founding member of The Satori Group, his
work there comprises the majority of the
pride in his life. His girlfriend and puppy
take up the rest. Recent Satori credits
include: reWilding, Tragedy: a tragedy, Making
of a Monster and Winky. Up next: Intiman
Summer Theatre Festival.
Kate Sumpter (Jane)
is delighted to be in
her first show at
Seattle Children’s
Theatre! A graduate of
the University of
Washington schools of
Drama and International Studies, she was
seen recently in reWilding with the Satori
Group and Legally Blonde at Seattle Musical
Theater. Other credits include performances
in The Callers and MilkMilkLemonade at
Washington Ensemble Theater, and cowriting and performing in Ithaca I’ll Never
See at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Kate will
be seen next in Harp Song at On The Boards’
New Works Northwest Festival. She would

Production Staff
Linda Hartzell (Artistic Director) has been
the Artistic Director of Seattle Children’s
Theatre and its Education Programs since
1984. She received her BA in Education from
the University of Washington, and was a
recipient of the Distinguished Achievement
Award from UW College of Arts and Sciences
in 1994. Hartzell has directed 61 plays for
SCT, 44 of which were world premieres. In

Production Staff
Y York (Playwright) writes awardwinning material for stage, television,
film and interactive media. Her play,
Afternoon with the Elves was the inaugural
production in SCT’s Charlotte Martin
Theatre. Since then, Ms. York has returned
to SCT with seven more plays for children

Mary Ann Ehlshlager (Managing Director)
leads SCT with over 18 years of leadership
experience within some of America’s largest
and most notable regional theatres, including
the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, Arena
Stage in Washington, DC and New York’s
Roundabout Theatre Company and Pearl
Theatre Company. She joined SCT in June
2012. Ehlshlager has served in various
leadership capacities throughout her
career in not-for-profit resident theatre
companies, managing financial stabilization
and operational transitions at the Delaware
Theatre Company and Off-Broadway’s Pearl
Theatre Company, as well as serving as
Project Manager for the Guthrie Theater’s
$125 million new facility, which opened
in Minneapolis in 2006. A strong advocate
for collaboration within the arts and the
non-profit arena, Ehlshlager was a founding
Board member of the Delaware Arts Alliance
as well as the Belize Humane Association
and the Alliance Against AIDS. Ehlshlager
graduated with a BA from the University of
Virginia and an MFA from the California
Institute of the Arts.

Syracuse Stage and developed a new toddler
production, Dot & Ziggy, which premiered
at Chicago Children’s Theatre. Previously,
she directed The Grapes of Wrath at Intiman
Theatre, and the Australian premiere of
Afternoon of the Elves. Hartzell serves on the
Board of Stage Directors and Choreographers
Society. She was formerly on the board of
Theatre Communications Group, and served
on the board and is a former vice president of
the United States Center for the International
Association of Theatre for Children and
Young People (TYA/ USA). Among
her honors are ArtsFund’s Outstanding
Achievement in the Arts award, the Mayor’s
Arts Award, and the prestigious Gregory Falls
Sustained Achievement Award from Theatre
Puget Sound.

Jerry Spinelli (Author) is the author of 30
published books and the grandfather of 21
children. Born in 1941, Mr. Spinelli lives
in Pennsylvania with his wife and fellow
children’s book author, Eileen Mesi Spinelli.
Mr. Spinelli spent 15 years and wrote four
adult novels before having his first book,
Space Station Seventh Grade, published in
1982. That book was originally written for
adults, but ultimately published for young
people. His popular children’s books
have received the distinguished Newbery
Medal (Mania Magee, 1991) and Newbery
Honor (Winger, 1998). Crash was written
in 1996. Mr. Spinelli continues to write,
with his most recent book Hokey Pokey
released in January of this year. He
graduated from Gettysburg College in 1963
and acquired his MA from John Hopkins
University in 1964.
Rita Giomi (Director) has over 30 years
experience in professional theatre. Her
recent local credits include The Violet Hour
for Seattle Public Theatre; Wittenberg for
Seattle Shakespeare Company; and Danny,
King of the Basement, Harold and the Purple
Crayon, The Borrowers, Getting Near to
Baby, I Was a Rat!, A Tale of Two Cities,
and Hamlet for SCT. Also at SCT: If You
Give a Mouse a Cookie, The BFG, Jason and
the Golden Fleece, Everyone Knows What
a Dragon Looks Like, The Devil and Daniel
Webster, Sleeping Beauty, The Secret Garden,
The Shape of a Girl, The True Confessions
of Charlotte Doyle, The Shakespeare Stealer,
Johnny Tremain, Animal Farm, The Tempest,
Invisible Friends, Charlotte’s Web, Rip
Van Winkle/Sleepy Hollow, and Mother
Hicks. Her other Seattle-area credits include
work with Seattle Rep, ACT, The Empty
Space, TAG, Theater Schmeater, Center
Stage, Unexpected Productions, and Stark/
Raving Theatre. Ms. Giomi is the Artistic
Associate at SCT, and from 1993 to 2007,
she served as the Artistic Director of their
Young Actor Institute.
Melanie Burgess (Costume Designer) is
always delighted to return to SCT, having
designed costumes for 33 productions,
including Harold and the Purple Crayon,
The Hundred Dresses, The Big Friendly
Giant, and Addy: An American Girl Story.
Also in Seattle, she has designed for Seattle
Opera, The Seattle Rep, Intiman, The 5th
Avenue, Empty Space, Seattle Shakespeare
Company, and TAG. Melanie is on the
faculty of Cornish College of the Arts,
and was the recipient of the Gregory
Award for “Outstanding Costume Design
2010”. Melanie is lucky enough to be
partnered with the creative force of nature,
Rob Burgess and share in parenting two
incredible daughters, Madison and Lily.
Carey Wong (Scenic Designer) has
designed sets for Seattle Rep, Berkeley
Rep, Portland Center Stage, Intiman, ACT,
TAG, Village Theatre, Syracuse Stage,
Childsplay, Phoenix Theatre, Hey City
Theater and Prince Music Theater. He
has been Resident Designer for Portland
Opera, Opera Memphis, and Wildwood
Park for the Arts, and has designed
for Seattle Opera, Pittsburgh Opera,
Vancouver Opera, the Spoleto Festival
USA, the Beijing Music Festival, and
Nearco Producciones in Spain. This is his
26th design for SCT.
Geoff Korf (Lighting Designer) has designed
the lighting for about 300 productions
(including 100 world premieres) over the
past 25 years. Notable world premieres
include Disney’s High School Musical at the
Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis,
and August Wilson’s Two Trains Running.
His work has been seen on Broadway, at
the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Mark
Taper Forum, Cornerstone Theater, Seattle
Repertory, Intiman, Seattle Children’s

Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, The Old
Globe, South Coast Repertory, The Guthrie
Theatre, The Goodman, Actors Theatre of
Louisville, Trinity Repertory, Long Beach

exhibit designer his work has also appeared
at the Huntington Library, the Hammer
Museum, the Alf Museum in Claremont,
and the Los Angeles County Museum of
Art. He has been a member of the Ensemble
of Cornerstone Theater in Los Angeles
since 1996. Geoff also serves as the Head
of Design at the University of Washington
where he has taught since 2002. He is a
graduate of California State University,
Chico and the Yale School of Drama.
Chris R. Walker (Sound Designer) is
very happy to be returning for another
season as resident sound designer at SCT.
He’s also ecstatic that his two daughters
are able to see so many great plays right
where he works. It’s a good job for the
whole family! In Seattle, he has designed
at Seattle Rep, ACT, the 5th Avenue and
Intiman. Nationally, he has designed in San
Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston,
Boston, Chicago, and New York. Chris
holds a BA in Classical Piano Performance
from Cornish College.

Geoffrey Alm (Fight Choreographer)
has worked with SCT since 1988, most
recently fight directing for A Single Shard
and Robin Hood. Geof has choreographed
nationally at The Shakespeare Theatre,
Washington DC; The Huntington, Boston;
McCarter Theatre, New Jersey; Kansas
City Rep; Arizona Theatre Company;
Shakespeare Santa Cruz; and The Old
Globe, San Diego. Locally, his work has
been seen at Seattle Opera, Intiman, and
The 5th Ave. He teaches stage fighting in
the MFA program at the UW, Cornish,
Freehold Theatre Lab, and UPS. Mr.
Alm is a fight master with the Society of
American Fight Directors.
Michael Wellborn (Production Manager)
is in his sixth season working with the
amazing staff and guest artists of SCT.
Prior to joining SCT, Michael was on the
faculty of the University of Washington
Dance Program. As a lighting designer
for over 30 years, his work has been

Thirteen years ago, a teenage
girl named Rachel Scott died in the
horrific Columbine shooting. In her
honor, her parents started a nonprofit
organization, Rachel’s Challenge,
offering a series of empowering
programs and strategies that equip
students and adults to combat
bullying and allay feelings of isolation
and despair by creating a culture of
kindness and compassion.
The organization’s website reports
that: “Each day 160,000 students do
not go to school because they are
bullied, teased and harassed.” Rachel’s
Challenge is, in part, designed to
combat this statistic. The organization
encourages people to ignite a chain
reaction with random acts of kindness.
Though based in Colorado, the
organization and its urgent message
have enjoyed a significant and ongoing
nationwide impact, touching schools
in Belgium, British Columbia and
throughout the U.S. In Washington
state in recent years, students from
White River High School, some
Edmonds schools and all public
schools in the Enumclaw district (from
Sunrise Elementary to Enumclaw
High School) have learned of Rachel’s
Challenge. In conjunction with the
Challenge, earlier this year, Enumclaw
students pledged to commit 26 acts of
kindness to honor the victims of the
Sandy Hook tragedy.
Rachel’s Challenge offers useful
tips for all ages, including simple,
actionable ideas for elementary
students such as “use kind words,
do nice things and include others.”

educators, parents and businesses.
