THE IMPACT OF SCT’S 2011-12 SEASON
MISSION
To provide children of all ages access to professional theatre, with a focus on new works and theatre education
IMPACT
Engages nearly 150,000 patrons with theatre arts each year, including:
•
65,000 students and teachers served by our School Children Access Fund
•
4,900 students and teacher reached through our education outreach programs
•
3,205 Drama School registrations
Presented 108 world premieres since the theatre’s inception in 1975
INFLUENCE
“It’s very cool because we learned a lot of lessons in the play. We learned to keep going even if we think we have failed. We
are taught to follow our dreams . . . It’s nice we learned tons of lessons that are good for our life but we had so much fun!”
– Student on A Single Shard
“SCT serves so many purposes—not only does it bring books and language alive but it also serves as part of our unit on
careers (acting, writing, set building, etc.). My class has been coming to SCT twice a season for nearly 20 years and we
always leave with satisfied smiles. Thank you for helping keep the arts alive in our schools and community!”
– Seattle Public School teacher
2011-12 MAINSTAGE SHOWS
In 2011-12, SCT presented a dynamic season featuring both literary titles and new works, expanding education programs
and building our subscriber family. This season included two world premiere productions, which received much acclaim
and have since been re-mounted at other theatres. We extended four of the season’s six productions, largely due to
demand from our school show audiences. We are proud of the range in thematic content and artistic style.

DUCATION PROGRAMS
ARTS EDUCATION
Now in her 15th year with SCT, Education Director Karen Sharp continues to oversee the successful
operations and educational influences of our education outreach programming and Drama School
classes. In 2011-12, Ms. Sharp was appointed President of Theatre for Young Audiences/USA, served
on the Seattle Public Schools’ K-12 Arts Advisory Committee and acted as a Guest Lecturer for
conferences and universities throughout the country.
EDUCATION OUTREACH
Each year, Seattle Children’s Theatre offers short-term and long-term residencies at schools and
community organizations throughout the Puget Sound region. In the 2011-12 school year, SCT held
in-school or afterschool residencies at the following schools:
• Bryant Elementary
• Einstein Elementary
• Highland Park Elementary
• Issaquah Montessori
• Jane Adams K-8
• Kennydale Elementary
• Lakeridge Elementary
• Lowell at Capitol Hill
• Lowell at Lincoln
• New Futures at Arbor Heights
• New Futures at Woodridge Park
• Thurgood Marshall Elementary
In addition, we spend several hours providing professional development
training for teachers each year, including our partnership summer
institute Bringing Theatre into the Classroom.

DRAMA SCHOOL
SCT is home to the largest Drama School for young audiences in the nation. With classes bringing
preschoolers into Creative Arts for Young Thespians (CAST) to a wide variety of drama classes and
our Young Actor Institute (YAI) for high school students, we engage more than 3,200 youth from three
to 21 years of age. In addition, our popular Summer Season productions, performed by students,
attracted nearly 4,000 patrons last summer.
