Introducing Mark Gladden OUR NEW SENIOR DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT “ I see fundraising as the step that allows social change to take place. At the end of the day, I know the result of my work is helping to improve lives. We are proud to welcome Mark Gladden, NDI New Mexico’s new Senior Director of Development, to our team of fundraisers. Mark is excited to make the move to Santa Fe and to NDI New Mexico from his birthplace in Las Cruces where his family dates back to the late 1800’s. “I’ve always been interested in the capital of our state, the cultural and arts scene, and now NDI New Mexico. From inspiring stories of teachers who are doing amazing work to the impressive facilities, I am proud to be associated with an organization that connects fun and joy to health and positive pathways for children!” Mark’s fundraising experience includes the Bay Area Discovery Museum, the University of California at Berkeley, and New Mexico State University where he worked on capital campaigns, special events, planned and major gifts, grants and endowed fund appeals. “I see fundraising as the step that allows social change to take place. At the end of the day, I know the result of my work is helping to improve lives. Mark is looking forward to meeting all NDI New Mexico’s donors, volunteers, community partners, families and friends. “I want to hear the specific stories of how people came to find NDI New Mexico and what draws them to it. Jessie Dickter and her older brother Max were a part of that End-of-Year Event and First Lady Laura Bush was in attendance at the grand-opening gala performance. Since then, NDI New Mexico has served thousands of children all over the state with programs that inspire them to Work Hard, Do Their Best, Never Give Up and Be Healthy. Last year we opened The Hiland Theater where now, just like the The Dance Barns ten years ago, we are building a community around student achievement and success. Each day youth from across Santa Fe and Albuquerque fill The Dance Barns and The Hiland hallways and studios. Picture Boys Ballet Bootcampers doing push-ups and grand jetés, classes of three and four yearolds tip-toeing to the water fountain together, advanced students stretching out before starting upper level technique classes, HIP to Be Fit® Club students making healthy snacks and receiving homework help and young dancers of all ages leaping and twirling both in and out of their classes. You will also find teachers working on choreography, volunteers helping out with costumes and other projects, and families gathered in conversation. continued inside -Ann Lerner, Film Liaison for the City of Albuquerque Call Cecily Peterson for more infomation at (505) 340-0208. I wanted to learn how to create that magic!” Shortly after her experience as a runner, Liz began NDI New Mexico’s Teaching Excellence® apprentice training uniting her degree in dance and performing experience with her natural exuberance and love of children. Since then, Liz has worked in our Residency, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe Programs; taught tiny tots, SWAT, and Celebration Teams; and directed both Train the Trainer and the Wallis Annenberg Santa Fe Summer Institute. “Directing the Summer Institute last year gave me a new perspective on how to inspire creativity from our incredible staff of teachers and musicians.” Liz is now NDI New Mexico’s Associate Artistic DIrector and is excited to co-write the script for Santa Fe’s End-of-Year Event 2014.■ “ NDI New Mexico has not only given me the passion for dance, it has given me a family of amazing, supportive and loving peers, and a group of inspiring and encouraging teachers. It has taught me not dreams, and that SHIPROCK 155 children 450 audience “ SPOT LIGHT to give up on my GALLUP 100 children 300 audience working hard truly does pay off not only in NDI New Mexico, I’m so grateful it’s part of my life. – Jessie Dickter In 2003, Jessie Dickter was a tiny tot in “Jo Kid for President”, the very first show hosted at The Dance Barns. At that time, her brother Max was a member of SWAT, the Super Wonderful Advanced Team. Max, who is now studying acting at NYU, set an enduring example for Jessie who became the first 3rd-grader ever accepted as a SWAT dancer herself. Because The Dance Barns allowed us to expand our advanced programs, Jessie was able to learn technique and become an advanced dancer, singer and actress. Today you will find her at The Dance Barns during the day studying with the New Mexico School for the Arts and rehearsing with NDI New Mexico’s Company XCel in the evenings. Most recently Jessie had the opportunity to work with Broadway dancer Charlotte d’Amboise learning Bob Fosse’s Hot Honey Rag. This year NDI New Mexico is reaching over 7,000 students across the state. Through the Residency Program, we make high quality arts programming and our unique brand of teaching available to children living in rural areas. At each school in our outreach program, we foster a culture of excellence that positively impacts the students, their siblings, parents, and teachers. In Santa Fe and Albuquerque, we offer afterschool, weekend and summer programs open to the entire community. Among developing countries, category of aptitude and skill. The solution to this epic failing continues be among the most elusive and hotly debated social and political issues out there. For Catherine Oppenheimer, the answer is as out-of-the-box as it gets: Make ‘em dance. For almost twenty years, Oppenheimer, a former professional ballet dancer, has used the discipline, rigors, and joy of music and movement as a portal to instilling the strongest foundational qualities for achievement there are: self-confidence, discipline, pride, and passion. Her groundbreaking program, The National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI-NM), transforms the futures of thousands of school-age children every year. Have your doubts We often read about the hurdles children in New Mexico face. NDI New Mexico is part of the solution for youth - improving grades, shifting negative attitudes, and paving the way for a healthier lifestyle. More than just buildings, The Dance Barns and The Hiland provide an important space for this work, allowing us to build deeper relationships with families, create constructive and safe places for children to spend their time, and provide inspirational programs to capture the interest and imagination of a child. Here’s to the next 10 years! We welcome and thank Nancy & Tony Jacobs, Jerry & Barbara Landgraf and Cynthia & Alan Coleman as the newest members of the Silver Sneakers Society. They are both well trained and well behaved. From my travels around the country and world, there is nothing like what is happening at NDI New Mexico – technical training combined with inspiration. This is why I started NDI so many years ago.” says NDI Founder, Jacques d’Amboise.
