Alder has one of the highest poverty rates in the state, making it an ideal location to implement this comprehensive effort. Partnering with Reynolds School District, “I Have a Dream” Oregon is cultivating services at the Dreamer School to help improve student statewide benchmark test scores and ensure that at least 80% of students move on to finish a post-secondary degree or certificate. By adopting Dreamer students from an entire 3rd grade at a low-income school, “I Have a Dream” Oregon committed to follow them through to college with three core services: long-term relationships with caring adults; access to academic and social resources; and creating a “culture of college and career” with Dreamers and their families. DREAMER CLASSES AT-A-GLANCE 900 Dreamers in our traditional Class model. Dreamers are beating the odds! In 2011, over 90% of our graduation-aged Dreamers received their diploma/GED and over 70% enrolled in post-secondary education by fall 2011. Dedicated sponsors, staff and volunteers stick with Dreamer Classes from third grade through the first two years of college, and each Dreamer is offered up to $8,000 in college scholarships. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Classes 1 – 5 have completed high school and moved through college. Now adults, these Dreamers have careers and families! Many are still connected with “I Have a Dream” Oregon, and we are proud to know them. Dreamers from Classes 6 – 8 are enrolled in college at various levels. Our most recent graduating class (Class 8) finished their first year of college and are in the midst of their second year. Our current Dreamer Classes, 9 and 10, are spread throughout the Portland Metro area. Class 9’s programming is based at Benson High School with 12th grade Dreamers spread throughout 23 schools in Oregon. Class 10’s programming is based at Vernon School with 8th grade Dreamers. Class 9 is graduating from high school and has been accepted to more than 13 different colleges and universities. Class 10 is transitioning to high school and continues to to expand their horizons with regular college visits, field trips, homework help, academic tutoring and enrichment programming. “Thank you for supporting my family with kindness and thoughtfulness over the years.
