NEW DREAMER SCHOOL MODEL
ALDER ELEMENTARY: THE FIRST DREAMER SCHOOL
In July 2010, “I Have a Dream” Oregon selected Alder Elementary School in east Multnomah
County as the nation’s first Dreamer School. Alder has one of the highest poverty rates in the
state, making it an ideal location to implement this comprehensive effort.
Partnering with Reynolds School District, “I Have a Dream” Oregon is cultivating services at the
Dreamer School to help improve student statewide benchmark test scores and ensure that at
least 80% of students move on to finish a post-secondary degree or certificate.

SUCCESSFUL DREAMER CLASSES
DREAMER CLASSES: 23 YEARS OF SUCCESS
Since 1990, “I Have a Dream” Oregon has adopted
10 Dreamer Classes. By adopting Dreamer students
from an entire 3rd grade at a low-income school,
“I Have a Dream” Oregon committed to follow them
through to college with three core services: long-term
relationships with caring adults; access to academic
and social resources; and creating a “culture of
college and career” with Dreamers and their families.
DREAMER CLASSES AT-A-GLANCE
900 Dreamers in our traditional Class model.
Dreamers are beating the odds! In 2011, over 90% of our graduation-aged Dreamers received their diploma/GED and over 70% enrolled in
post-secondary education by fall 2011.
Dedicated sponsors, staff and volunteers stick
with Dreamer Classes from third grade through the
first two years of college, and each Dreamer is
offered up to $8,000 in college scholarships.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Classes 1 – 5 have completed high school and moved through college. Now adults, these Dreamers have careers and families! Many are still connected with “I Have a Dream” Oregon, and we are
proud to know them.
Dreamers from Classes 6 – 8 are enrolled in college at various levels. Our most recent graduating class
(Class 8) finished their first year of college and are in the midst of their second year.
Our current Dreamer Classes, 9 and 10, are spread throughout the Portland Metro area. Class 9’s
programming is based at Benson High School with 12th grade Dreamers spread throughout 23
schools in Oregon. Class 10’s programming is based at Vernon School with 8th grade Dreamers.
Class 9 is graduating from high school and has been accepted to more than 13 different colleges
and universities.
Class 10 is transitioning to high school and continues to to expand their horizons with regular college
visits, field trips, homework help, academic tutoring and enrichment programming.
“Thank you for supporting my family with kindness and
thoughtfulness over the years. You have helped make
our dream of a college-bound daughter come true.”
