It’s a new year and a new Corn Exchange.
We’re launching 2014 with a brand new strand of exciting live events
called cornex:discover. Spanning an eclectic mix of genres, they offer
something completely different and a chance to explore music beyond
the mainstream.
Already being hailed as a cult masterpiece, the first concert is The
Tyburn Tree an epic song cycle, that shines a lantern into the terrifying
corners of London’s history; the infamous Tyburn gallows at Marble Arch,
where convicts were hung in public, the dark labyrinths and alleyways
frequented by Jack the Ripper, and other murderous legends. Marc
Almond is our ringmaster-style tour guide through these tales from
the shadows in collaboration with composer and saxophonist John
Harle. We’re also welcoming impossibly cool amplified contemporary
ensemble Icebreaker. They will perform their new work, a live reworking
of Kraftwerk’s back catalogue from the little known radical early
material to the iconic later works Autobahn and Trans-Europe Express.
The show will be accompanied by a specially commissioned film.
Booking your tickets for Corn Exchange shows has also become easier
with a new box office system designed to give you more flexibility. You
can now choose your seats online or even through our Facebook page
and print your tickets at home to be scanned later at the venue.
Warming us up this season, we have laughter with Russell Kane, Punt &
Dennis, Alan Davies, Russell Brand and Sarah Millican whose popularity
has meant squeezing her in for three dates. Touring for the very first
time, global singing superstar Susan Boyle brings her unique ‘voice of
an angel’ to Cambridge, add to this the funky duo Rizzle Kicks, London
Grammar, Steel Panther and Neil Finn and it’s clear the new year brings
with it an exceptional new season.

Runrig are the original Scottish
folk rock group. Formed in
1973 on the Isle of Skye under
the name of The Run Rig Dance

have come and gone but the
one thing that has remained
the same is their unique songs
which focus on locations,
history and the people of
Scotland.
Performing together on stage
in the UK for the very first

Bling Ya Ting is the largest
annual urban and world talent
show in the Eastern Region
and a great celebration for
Cambridgeshire. The show
involves about 100 performers

the punk generation, with their
own highly original sound that
combined a brilliant melodic
touch with a genuine dark
aggression and an effortless

Greenwich Village folk scene,

slew of folk influences as well
as an affinity for fearlessly
tackling controversial issues.
It’s a fun family event that
everyone will enjoy. The show
helps unite, discover, develop
and showcase local talent with
a focus on urban and world
themes.
The Stranglers are a pivotal
band from those inspirational
times and have been
acknowledged with their
recent BBC Proms appearance
at the Royal Albert Hall.

Think all classical music is the same? Think again.
Recently named as the Corn Exchange’s Orchestra in Residence, the
prestigious Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) delivers three
outstanding concerts from January to May 2014.
On Thursday 30 January, the RPO is joined by award-winning piano
soloist Freddy Kempf for an unforgettable evening of twentieth
century American classics from Copland, Bernstein and Gershwin
including such hits as I Got Rhythm Variations and the haunting
Rhapsody in Blue.
On Thursday 13 March, veteran piano soloist John Lill joins the RPO
for a feast of major works by Beethoven, including the Fidelio Overture,
Piano Concerto No. 5 (Emperor) and Symphony No. 7. Live on stage
before this concert, young musicians from Cambridgeshire will perform
a ground-breaking new Beethoven-influenced piece, working closely
with RPO Resound, the orchestra’s education wing.
On Sunday 27 April 2014, Basel Symphony Orchestra performs music
by some of the twentieth century’s most influential composers Arvo
Pärt, John Adams and Philip Glass, with the hugely talented cello
soloist Matt Haimovitz (pictured here), conducted by Dennis Russell
Davies, an acknowledged champion of modern classical music.
For the final concert in this year’s series, on Thursday 22 May, dynamic
young conductor Nicholas Collon joins the RPO for an evening of
quintessentially English music by Vaughan Williams, Benjamin
Britten and Elgar. Join Julian Lloyd Webber as he performs Elgar’s
timeless Cello Concerto, his swan song appearance as Corn Exchange
Artist in Residence.

years, reggae stars UB40 who
are named after the infamous
1970s unemployment benefit
form are back on the road.
For the very first time global singing sensation Susan Boyle goes
on tour. Performing a sensational and contemporary repertoire
of iconic album tracks including I Dreamed a Dream and Wild
Horses, as well as classics she’s never performed live before, this
will be a show that captivates and enthrals the audience.
They released their first album
Singing Off in 1980. It was the
start of a career that has since
seen the band have over forty
UK top 40 hit singles, making
them on the most successful
British groups of all time.
With over 20 million records sold and topping the charts in over
30 countries, Susan Boyle has come a very long way since 2009’s
Britain’s Got Talent.
Back in 1970 in Birmingham
a musical super power was
established. Now, 40 years on,
the Electric Light Orchestra
still gets regular plays on radio
stations around the world

The Tyburn Tree is an epic song cycle that shines
a lantern into the terrifying corners of London’s
history. The infamous Tyburn gallows at Marble
Arch, where convicts were hung in public, providing
a gory spectacle for the masses; the dark labyrinths

events under the banner of cornex:discover.
Spanning an eclectic mix of genres, they will sometimes feature artists you know and

the ringmaster-style tour guide through these tales
from the shadows. Drawing on contemporary
classical, electronic dance and ambient music,
Harle’s pulsating score combines with Almond’s
unique voice and lyrics producing punchy,
bitter-sweet songs full of emotion, driving rhythms
and black humour…a cult masterpiece.

One of Switzerland’s leading orchestras
performs a programme of mesmerising music
from three of the twentieth century’s most
influential composers, Arvo Part, John Adams
and Philip Glass. This celebration of the work
of major minimalists is conducted by Denis
Russell Davies, a champion of
modern classical music
who will also have
conducted the UK
premiere of Glass’s
Cello Concerto No. 2
in London’s Cadogan
Hall just days earlier.
Kraftwerk, formed in 1970, are a German
electronic group whose output has revolutionised
music and influenced scores of musicians.
Icebreaker are a 12-piece contemporary amplified
music group founded in 1989. This project led by
composer, producer and sound-scapist J.Peter
Schwalm re-imagines tracks from a range of
Kraftwerk albums to show off the group’s many
different sounds – from early acoustic tracks to
the iconic synthesized tunes.
Accompanied by video work of visual artists
Sophie Clements and Toby Cornish, their avant
garde film purposefully departs from the high-tech
graphics associated with Kraftwerk and instead
focusses on a nostalgic vision of a future now
passed, and a modern reworking of a lost
utopian dream.

Cambridge City Ambassadors
As one of the first initiatives of the new Cambridge BID (Business
Improvement District), the Cambridge City Ambassadors have made a
significant impact in the city, engaging with more than 17,500
visitors since their launch in August 2013.
Out in the city seven days a week, the team of multi-lingual
Ambassadors are easily identified in their smart black suits with bowler hats
and perform a number of important roles. Primarily, they provide a street-based
concierge service offering not just a warm welcome to the city and helpful
directions, but also advice about what Cambridge has to offer; retail, leisure and
cultural attractions, as well as the hidden gems and an insight into the
city’s rich history.
