& investigation of child abuse for physicians, nurses, pathologists, law enforcement,
Justice of the Peace, attorneys, social workers, CPS workers, emergency department
personnel and first responders and all other related professions.

Conference Objectives
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
•Define the unusual aspects of end of life care in cases of the child dying as a result of abuse/
neglect.
•Determine the initial management plan for children suspected of abuse and neglect
•Participants will learn the reasons for delayed disclosure
•Participants will learn the difference between pedophiles and molesters
•Appreciate the value and role of a survivor/victim throughout the investigative process.
•Understand the value of forensic evidence and appreciate the continued advancement in
those fields and of utilizing that same evidence in the future.
•Enable differentiation between accidental, neglectful and abusive burns
•Learn how bitemark evidence can help protect the innocent
•Inform audience about reasons why CPS is implementing Alternative Response
•Describe the difference between a case of failure to thrive and intentional starvation
•To provide insight into the evidence and proof needed to prosecute federal child
exploitation crime.
•Describe signs and symptoms of sexually transmitted infections
•Be able to recognize “red flags” in the medical history concerning for non-accidental trauma.
•Know that household contacts and siblings of physically abused children are at risk for
injury and are recommended for medical evaluation to screen for physical abuse.
•Become familiar with dermatologic and hematologic medical conditions mistaken for child
physical abuse

NURSES: Driscoll Children’s Hospital is an approved provider of continuing nursing
education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Nurses be will awarded up to 18.0 CNE contact hours. Nurses must attend each claimed
session in its entirety and complete an evaluation for receipt of contact hours.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing
medical education for physicians.
CREDIT ACCREDITATION
Driscoll Children’s Hospital designates this live educational activity for a maximum of
[eighteen] 18 hours in AMA PRA Category I Credit ™. Physicians should only claim credit
commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This course has been
designated by Driscoll Children’s Hospital for one hour of education in medical ethics and/or
professional responsibility.
SOCIAL WORKERS, LPCs: Driscoll Children’s Hospital is an approved provider of continuing
education by the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners and the Texas State Board of
Examiners of Professional Counselors. This activity is pending approval for a total of 16 credit
hours from the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners and the Texas State Board of
Examiners of Professional Counselors. Requirements include attending the entire conference
and the completion of an evaluation form to receive CEU’s.
