Note from MODA Mall Management
Welcome
So much has been going on and there are so many
activities and promotions planned for the summer that we
thought we’d never fit it all in to this issue of MODA Talk.
But the MODA Talk team is determined to keep you up to
date, so here it is: Issue 4 – crammed full of fun, fashion
and excitement.
What better way to prepare for summer than by
celebrating in style with some of MODA Mall’s newest
family members. Sergio Rossi, Audemars Piguet and Piaget
joined our family of high-end fashion and jewellery and
watches boutiques when they unveiled their scrumptiously
luxurious shops, glamour watchmaker and jewellery brand
Cartier expanded into new, larger premises
and Maki restaurant revealed its extensive array of
upscale, authentic ala carte items as it opened the doors to
its exclusive Japanese restaurant. Each opening was cause
to celebrate in very unique ways.
Sergio Rossi warmed the hearts and soles of every shoe
lover across the island when it declared a portion of sales
at its gala boutique opening would go to The Mother &
Child Welfare Society, which works tirelessly for family
welfare in Bahrain. How good is that? Just another reason
to feel good about wearing the beautiful exclusive Italian
designer footwear.
The oldest watch manufacturer still in the hands of its
founding family, Audemars Piguet, chose to make the
opening of its Bahrain boutique a platform for launching
its Royal Oak Offshore Grand Prix Collection. Not
coincidentally but rather excitingly, we were in the midst
of Grand Prix fever and the Audemars Piguet ambassadors,
F1 drivers Rubens Barrichello, Jarno Trulli and Sébastien
Buemi were on hand to show off the new collection.
We also had the extravaganza that was the Piaget
launch. The feature was a fashion show choreographed
around a specially created display which resembled an
oversized watch from Piaget’s new collection – as viewed
from above. Quite a sight, and just a fantastic way to show
off their beautiful watches.
We all love to eat well after an inspired shopping spree
and what better way to enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine
than when it’s prepared by one of the finest fusion
restaurants in the Middle East. We couldn’t be prouder that
Maki chose MODA Mall in which to open its first restaurant
in Bahrain. And if you must work through lunch or you’re
looking for a little sweet treat as a pick-me-up, Lina’s Café
and Vivel Patisserie opened their doors to much fanfare.
But, enough boasting about the fun we’ve had. All you
want to know is how to get a slice of the action moving
forward. Right? Well, have we got a treat for you. Rolex is
due to open soon and we’ll let you know all about that in
the mall in the coming weeks. The summer sales have
already started, and can you believe it, winter stock is
starting to arrive in some of our boutiques.
In this edition, we talk to one of our founding tenants,
AvantGarde Jewels, which perpetuates Bahrain’s proud
history with its collectible swords, daggers and sculptures.
Don’t imagine that swords and daggers are only for the
men, as our gorgeous front cover photography clearly shows.
If you haven’t visited the mall lately, come in and catch
all our promotions and see all the summer collections
before you leave the island on your holiday adventures.
Have fun reading and shopping, wearing and dining.
From the MODA Mall Management.
Mall Update
Photos worth more
than 1000 words
We hope you were as excited as we were when the House of Cartier unveiled a unique photo exhibition at the
inauguration of its new, expanded boutique in MODA Mall. The previously unseen photographs documented Jacques
Cartier’s travels to the Arabian Gulf which began in 1911 when he came in search of fine pearls and stopped over in
Bahrain for a prosperous visit with the Sheikhs. The long-standing relationship between Cartier and Bahrain was
strengthened with the opening of the new boutique, which bears the signature of Bruno Moinard, the architect-designer
responsible for all Cartier boutiques around the world.
Still going strong after
all these years
If you are the oldest watch manufacturer still in the hands of its founding
family, you have every reason to shout from the rooftops when you open
a new boutique. Audemars Piguet, which claims that title, did just that
when it took the opportunity of its latest boutique opening – in
MODA Mall – to present its new flagship launch of 2010, its Royal Oak
Offshore Grand Prix Collection. After Madrid, Kiev and the recent
extension of its New York showroom, the 19th Audemars Piguet Boutique was
opened in Bahrain amid Grand Prix fever. Fittingly, Audemars Piguet ambassadors, F1 drivers
Rubens Barrichello, Jarno Trulli and Sébastien Buemi were on hand to show off the new collection.
Feel good all over
– from your feet to your heart
There was more than one good reason to feel good about buying shoes at the opening of
the chic Sergio Rossi boutique in MODA Mall. Not only could shoppers join a list of A class
celebrities who wear the exclusive Italian high-quality footwear, but part of the
proceeds from sales on the opening day went to The Mother & Child Welfare Society,
which works tirelessly for family welfare in Bahrain. The boutique inauguration
showcased Sergio Rossi’s beautiful spring/summer 2010 collection. The boutique
offers its own collection alongside an eclectic mix of high-end designer footwear,
evening clutches, day bags and belts in a contemporary environment of
sophisticated and elegant luxury.
Mall Update
Ad event a real
bone tickler
We’ve had a lot of events at MODA Mall over the past few months but Zain Night of the AdEaters, an annual
celebration of the best and most unique advertising films from around the world, was certainly the funniest.
The event showcased some of the finest, most amazing, funniest, most artistic, most creative and most unexpected
advertising films from around the world and was attended by more than 550 advertising enthusiasts and specialists,
media, marketing and PR professionals. The programme, which is held in more than 40 countries, is the brainchild of
French advertising personality Mr. Jean Marie Boursicot.
Keys to happiness
Bahraini businessman, Yousif Al-Shater was ecstatic when he received the keys of
his new Audi A5 Sportback car. Who wouldn’t be in Mr Al-Shater’s shoes? He had
indulged his favourite hobby of shopping for branded shoes, perfumes, watches
and clothes at his favourite luxury mall and his purchases earned him free entry
into MODA Mall’s Formula One Grand Prix Season promotion. We call that a
win-win scenario! His delight was only matched by Abdulla Ebrahim who, at
first, thought someone was playing a practical joke when he was declared the winner
of the grand prize, the spectacular Audi A5 Coupe in the second and final draw.
Dining beyond sushi
Maki, one of the finest fusion Japanese restaurants in the Middle East opened the doors of its first restaurant in Bahrain
giving diners in the Kingdom a new experience in modern Japanese dining Inspired by the authentic Japanese cuisine,
Maki is known for a wide choice of original Japanese cuisine including delectable Sushi, Sashimi, Tepanyaki, Teriyaki as
well as some traditional dishes like Sukiyaki and Yosenabe with Fusion Temaki’s being its signature dish. Maki has
created an extensive array of upscale, authentic ala carte items, to revise the stereotype of Japanese food as being
limited to sushi.
Mall Update
Lunch or
a sweet treat
You can’t shop all day on an empty stomach and now
MODA Mall has some additional lunch and sweet treat
options with the opening of Lina’s Café and Vivel Patisserie.
Lina’s café offers a wide selection of distinctive sandwiches
and snacks. You can choose from Lina’s signature
sandwiches or design your own sandwich using the
freshest of ingredients. Vivel Patisserie serves sweet lovers
an exotic range of sumptuous handmade mini-pastries
and Turkish delights. With over one hundred different
pastries it will be hard to choose a favourite, but at least
you will know that each piece is uniquely produced and
crafted by hand using the highest quality ingredients.
Bird’s eye view
over Piaget Polo
collection
It was a line-up of who’s who at the unveiling of
the newly opened Piaget boutique but it’s hardly
surprising given Piaget’s historical ties with
Behbehani Brothers, partners of the Shirazi family
for over five decades. Historically, all the infamous
couples of important weddings in Bahrain were never
without Piaget watches. To celebrate the unveiling
recently, a uniquely designed stand was created to
take the shape of the Piaget Polo watch as seen from
a bird’s eye view. Stories of the brand’s remarkable
history as well as its technical know-how covered the
walls of the exclusive stand; and a glowing centre
stage acted as the Piaget Polo watch dial. The new
boutique is huge and includes a VIP room for viewing
Piaget’s collections in complete privacy.
Never miss a single
collection
Have you seen the new e-Government kiosk at MODA Mall?
Now you can shop and pay your bills at the same time so you
will never miss out on any of the new summer collections. The
e-services centres have been launched by the Ministry of Cabinet
Affairs to provide users with centres that can assist them in
completing their transactions with any government entity with
the help of a specialised team. The e-Kiosk machine is like an
ATM and can be used to complete 23 government services.
More time to shop has to be good!
Talking Point
Burberry
collection is

Burberry celebrated the launch of its childrenswear
collection with a fun-filled party at MODA Mall in April,
featuring British-inspired children’s games, such as skittles
and giant noughts and crosses, face painters and a balloon
artist. The boutique showcased its full range from the
Burberry childrenswear collection, including collections for
boys, girls, infants and newborns as well as children’s shoes
and accessories. Burberry childrenswear collections are
directly inspired by Burberry ready-to-wear and accessories
collections for men and women and reference the
signature trench coat, trademark check, British heritage
and technical sport.
Chefs vie for

Fashionistas who love fine dining as much as they love

Glittering launch for
boutique opening
Piaget’s exclusive boutique recently opened in a glittering
celebration at MODA Mall. The boutique was inaugurated
in style, with a uniquely designed stand specifically
created to take the shape of the Piaget Polo watch,
effectively seen from a bird’s eye view.
During the official inauguration, Piaget’s special VIP
guests witnessed an extraordinary watch and jewellery
show, where models were adorned with exquisite high-end
jewellery pieces from Piaget’s renowned Limelight collection.
Philippe Leopold-Metzger, Piaget Chief Executive
Officer spent a few minutes with MODA Talk and we asked
him about the company that began nearly 130 years ago.
What makes Piaget one of the best jewellery
companies in the world?
Piaget has b een able to remain a true luxury brand. Exclusive
and creative, the product is always the star. We are totally
integrated production wise and our number one asset is the
quality of our outstanding watchmakers and jewellers.
What was the inspiration behind opening in
Bahrain, and specifically MODA Mall?
Bahrain has been historically a key market for Piaget. We
wanted to have a store there that would have the same
standards as our flagship store rue du Rhône in Geneva.
The MODA Mall is, today, a beautiful mall, being the right
size and having a great choice of most of the best brands in
the world.
Piaget prides itself on its craftsmanship, can
you tell us how the high standards are
maintained?
Piaget product is made from A to Z in our workshops. From
design down to manufacturing, it is our own people and
craftsmen who make the products. Piaget has total control
over the production process. Many artisans have worked
for several generations for Piaget. Our company is their
company. We all have a sense of belonging and a great
pride for Piaget and what it stands for.
What jewellery trends are we likely to see in
the coming year?
I believe that the trend will be a return towards elegance.
For Piaget, we have a formula that works – the three Cs:
Creative, Contemporary and Classical. This is our challenge
every day.
Tell us about Piaget’s newest collection?
The hero of Piaget in 2010 is the new Piaget Altiplano
43mm. Altiplano is an ultra-thin watch, elegant and
modern. It is the thinnest automatic watch in the world
(5.25mm) and has the thinnest automatic movement
worldwide (2.35mm). It embodies perfectly well Piaget
DNA, in terms of thinness and elegance, and the very subtle
mix of modernity and elegance.
We also have a beautiful new creative collection on
jazz, that embodies the creative spirit of Piaget.

What is your staple summer item?
Mona Akhtarzada
It would have to be a white bag. I love Chanel but they don’t have it here in MODA Mall yet, I
hope they do soon. I love white for summer. It’s very classy and chic. I love all the light colours.
Flora Akhtarzada
I can’t do without my bag either. But my staple summer item would have to be a white
linen shirt. I love everything about it – it’s cool, clean, fresh looking.
White is just great for summer.
eBtisam El fartah
I like short shorts in white or pink, actually any pastel colour really. I usually wear flat
shoes or sometimes a wedge heel. My favourite tops are either white or black.
Estrella Barro
I love MaxMara items. My favourite summer item is a pink mini skirt. It’s casual
and I wear it with flat shoes and a sleeveless top.
Gihan Aggad
Do I have to choose one? I love everything in my wardrobe – dresses, bags, all of it. But if I had
to pick one it would be a summery dress with patterns. Not cotton, I usually like linen or silk.
Suha Samir
My swimsuit. It’s a plain, black two-piece swimsuit. I wear a short sheer dress over the top,
which is also black. Most of my wardrobe is black. I love it, even for summer.
Dalia Elmardi
I have a sunglasses collection. I collect them when I go on holidays, particularly
vintage sunglasses. But I also love bright, floating dresses for summer.
MODA Talk
Mona and Bader Hasan at AvantGarde
In a tradition
fit for a King
AvantGarde is an Aladdin’s cave of treasures, each
customized piece bearing a combination of quality,
design, innovation and tradition. MODA Talk chats with
owner Bader Hasan Mahmood, whose luxury gold and
silver presentation gifts have been seen in all the right
places for more than a decade.
Kings and queens around the world receive a sliver of
Bahrain tradition and heritage with every gift from
AvantGarde Jewels’ collection of exquisite handcrafted gold
and silver artifacts and sculptures.
It’s why the business has a long and intimate affiliation
with Bahrain’s own royal family members who regularly
select AvantGarde treasures as the gift of choice to global
royalty. And it is what drives the passion in AvantGarde
owner Bader Hasan Mahmood.
“Tradition is the most important thing in the world,”
Bader Hasan said. “Bahrain and Bahrainis have tremendous
pride in their heritage and with every unique piece is a
piece of Bahrain. These pieces are made by members of one
of the oldest families in the Arabian Gulf. The swords and
daggers are 100% made in Bahrain and that in itself is a
proud tradition.”
AvantGarde swords and daggers are known to be
among the treasures of His Majesty King Abdullah Bin
Abdul Aziz Al Saud, of Saudi Arabia, Queen Elizabeth II, the
King of Thailand, royalty around the Gulf and heads of state.
“Former US president George Bush once danced with a
ceremonial sword, during his visit to Bahrain, in the Ardha,
the Arabian sword dance traditionally performed before
going to war. It is now a ceremonial dance symbolizing
unity and friendship,” Bader Hasan said.
But the swords and daggers, known as Saifs and
Khanjars in Arabic, and the sculptures depicting typical
Bahraini scenes and Arabian horses and falcons are also
sought by artifact collectors and traditional Arabian
families wanting to preserve their heritage. The sword is a
popular gift from a father to his son at weddings, where it
represents a symbol of majestic pride.
“No-one goes to war with their sword anymore but the
sword still represents pride and honour. It’s a source of
great pride for a father to give his son a traditional
Bahraini sword on his wedding day. Often the Ardha is
performed at the wedding by professional dancers, keeping
the 200-year-old tradition alive.”
MODA Talk
AvantGarde’s range of swords and daggers includes
pieces with blades made from contemporary steel and the
scabbard handcrafted in traditional designs – fashioned in
the same time-honoured way the creators within the
Al Sayeghe family have been making their pieces for more
than 200 years.
The business also facilitates collector-to-collector sales
and refurbishes ancient blades with a traditional or
contemporary look.
Bader Hasan said younger generations of enthusiasts
were showing preference for scabbards inlaid with fine
leather such as ostriche, crocodile and snake and depicting
contemporary designs while mature collectors still
preferred traditional designs and elements such as ox horn
in the handle. However, gold, silver and precious gems were
ever popular across both groups and the extent of their use
in each item depended on the cost.
Ceremonial swords can be purchased for as little as
BD380 and while it will be similarly handcrafted with
painstaking care and incorporate traditional Bahraini
features, it won’t feature gold and precious gems
extensively in the design. A replica of the Al-Ajrab Sword,
the 140-year-old sword given to King Abdullah Bin Abdul
Aziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, by the
King of Bahrain, His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa,
during King Abdullah’s recent visit to Bahrain, could set
you back around BD4000.
When HM King Hamad presented the sword recently,
AvantGarde experienced a rash of requests for replica pieces.
“The Al-Ajrab was the sword of King Abdullah’s great
grandfather Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Al-Saud which the
Al-Khalifa family had the honour of safekeeping for almost
140 years. The royal family was recognized as responsible
for protecting and honouring the sword for all those years.
So gifting it back was a source of much national pride as
having fulfilled their duty to honour and protect,” Bader
Hasan said.
AvantGarde sources its specialised blades from reputed
suppliers in India, Damascus and Persia which carry the
signature of its manufacturer as a symbol of quality.
Collectors’ blades are sourced at auctions or private sales
although Bader Hasan’s reputation is so respected in
collecting circles that enthusiasts often come to him rather
than the other way around.
sculptures which are commissioned from the best
sculptors Bader Hasan can find across the globe.
“Most of the work comes from a particular sculptor in
the USA, who has captured the essence of the Arabian
stallion and the hunting falcon exactly,” Bader Hasan said.
“You can see every vein in the horse’s nostril and each
feather on the falcon. It’s a work of precision.
“The scenes so typical of a bygone era in Bahrain are
sculpted in our factory from silver and plated in gold. The
perennial favourites include sculptures of pearl traders
and fishermen, men doing business at the souq, teaching
of the Quran by the elders, Bahraini animals and flora as
well as scenes of daily life.
“We start with a detailed sketch based on the client’s
vision and we fine tune it until they have exactly what they
want. Once the sketch is approved it takes 40 days to make
that vision into the reality of a prestigious and traditional
presentation gift that might be part of an inauguration
ceremony, anniversary celebration or gift of appreciation.
They also are popular with matriarchs and patriarchs to
instill pride in the younger generations about their history
and heritage. Bahrain has changed a lot and people want
to be able to remind their offspring where they come from
and who they are. ”
“I used to have pieces that I would call my favourite
piece, but now I love every piece that leaves us,” Bader Hasan
said. “They are such perfect works of art and all represent
Bahrain. Most of those that we sell into collectors’ hands are
never for show or display so I love to see them while we are
refitting them or cleaning them. Many others are chosen as
presentation gifts for VIPs, on exclusive occasions or in
honour of significant events or milestones. All our swords
and daggers as well as our customized sculptures are sold
with a certificate of authenticity, making them much sought
after as a high-end gift.”
Men are the traditional owners of swords and the
J-shaped dagger known as a Khanjar, but women
traditionally carried a Shubriya or knife for protection from
wild animals and attackers. The Shubriya was carried on
the chest of a Bedouin woman whenever she stepped more
than a foot from her tent. Today the Shubriya is considered
a thoughtful and fitting gift for a woman on a special
occasion and they are no less decorative or ornate in their
appearance than either the Saif or Khanjar.
Figurines and sculptures fill out the treasure box that is
AvantGarde. Intricately sculpted busts of the proud
Arabian horse and falcon are among the most common
MODA Talk
AvantGarde, which was one of the early tenants of
MODA Mall and its predecessor the Bahrain Commercial
Complex, started when Bader Hasan returned from
studying in the UK and wanted to diversify from the family
business. Proud of his own Bahrain history, Bader Hasan
found himself drawn to the historical artifacts for which
he and his shop is now famous and the mall presented the
obvious and ideal location in which to open.
“MODA Mall is catering for a very specific clientele. It
has the element of providing prestige combined with very
unique pieces and you don’t find that in any other mall,”
Bader Hasan said.
Mona Al Qassimi, the general manager since opening,
runs the day-to-day business of the shop while Bader
Hasan sets the direction and vision. Right now, his plans
include expansion and he will soon embark on
establishing a ground floor private viewing room and
expanding the existing showroom to showcase a broader
range of the luxury goods.
“We like to cater to all our high-end clients. Many
collectors keep their collections private. They don’t do it to
show off or to put it on display, they genuinely love the
history, the workmanship and the thrill of collecting so
when they come to us, they like to conduct their business
in private. Others like to browse and that’s why it is
important to both to showcase our collection and provide
privacy for viewing.”
Just like each exquisite piece it sells, AvantGarde, itself,
is becoming a part of Bahrain’s proud history.
