Notes for Hubert Thomas Chandler: NOTE: Hubert Thomas Chandler (creator of this data base) is not deceased at this time (February 2006). The time of death was entered as "AFT. 2004" because filters contained in some online data bases remove all information about me (a live individual) and replace it with the single entry "Live Chandler." It is my desire that my name and other information be part of this data base. Hubert "Tom" Chandler entered the US Army as a First Lieutenant after graduating from the U. of Maryland Dental School (D.D.S.) 1957. Elizabeth Porter. Notes for Thomas Canada: It is very likely that the name Canada is derived from the name Kennedy or a similar name. A check of the origin of the name "Canada" shows that the country name Canada (Microsoft Encarta) comes from a word meaning "village" or "community" in one of the indigenous Iroquoian languages. A check of the LDS CD "Vital Records Index - British Isles" shows no matches for the name Canada or Canady or Cannada or Cannada. When the name is searched by "Soundex" or a fuzzy search method, 3,743 matches are found. All matches found by this method started with the letter "K" (exception are 2 O'Kennedy (S)) and all appear to be a variation of Kennedy such as "Kenadie", "Kenitie" or other variations. It is not known when the spelling was changed, since the name Canada is found in America before the Revolution. In some pedigrees containing Thomas Canada and Deliah Bevins children's names, they are shown with the last name of Kennedy, Canada, and Canady in the same listing. The 1850 Pike Co., KY census lists all of the living family with the surname Kenaday. The 1829 document that lists the marriage of Thomas and Deliliah by Hamon (also spelled Hammon in the same document) Williamson (Minister of the Gospel in the Baptist Church), spells Thomas' surname as Canady and Deliliah's surname as Bevins. (Pike Co. Marriage Register Vol. 1, p 77) The 1850 Federal census shows Thomas as the head of the household with his surname spelled Kenaday. This same enumeration shows his age as 48, born in VA and that he could not read or write. His wife Deliliah is shown as age 40, born in KY and could not read or write. Most of the children's names and birth dates are derived from the 1850 & 1860 census, but it should noted that the ages may vary a few years as calculated from each census. It should also be noted that Deliliah was present for the 1850 census, but not in the 1860 census. The last child Thomas was born about 1854. The 1860 census shows Thomas and his children with their surname spelled Canada. Notes for Delilah Bevins: Deliliah was born in Floyd Co., KY in the area that became Pike Co. The 1850 census lists her as 40 years old. Children of Thomas Canada and Delilah Bevins are: i. ii. Louisa Levicy Canada, born 1832 in Pike Co., KY; died 1895 in Pike Co., KY; married Booker T. Staton 30 Dec 1855 in Pike Co., KY. Hammon Canada, born 183223; married (1) Reecy Fields 14 Feb 1850 in Pike Co., KY; born 1830 in Pike Co., KY; died Bef. May 1857 in Pike Co., KY; married (2) Jane Munson 31 May 1857 in Pike Co., KY. 8 Notes for Hammon Canada: The 1850 Pike Co., KY census shows his name as Harrison Kenaday age 18 and his wife named Riceey at age 19 - no children at this time. Marriage Notes for Hammon Canada and Reecy Fields: The 1850 census shows Harrison Keniday as age 18 and married to Ricey(?) ? age 19 within the year of the census. Some pedigrees list a Reece as a child (b. 1831) of Thomas Canada and therefore a sister of Harrison (b. 1832) - this must be incorrect if the census listing is accepted. iii. iv. v. vi. vii. viii. ix. x. 15 xi. xii. xiii. Notes for Mary Jane Wiley: Floyd County, Kentucky records contain two documents on the marr iage of this couple. First, their marriage bond. The followin g excerpt shows the type of bond required at this period of time , the parties to the bond or the groom and his bondsman who wa s usually a relative or a very good friend of the couple, and th e date of the application of marriage. Known by all these men presents that we, Richard Williamson an d Shadrack Ward of Floyd County are held and firmly bound unto t he commonwealth of Kentucky in the penal sum of fifty pounds foi r the payment whereof we bind ourselves, our heirs and firmly b y these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 9th day o f October, 1810. Joseph Williamson, born Abt. 1840. 60. Charles Canaday, born 18 Apr 1770 in Guilford Co., NC35. He was the son of 120. John Canaday and 121. Margaret Thornburgh. He married 61. Sarah Russell 24 Apr 1794 in North Carolina. 61. Sarah Russell, born Abt. 1770. Notes for Charles Canaday: It is very likely that the name Canada is derived from the name Kennedy or a similar name. All matches found by this method started with the letter "K" (exception are 2 O'Kennedy (S)) and all appear to be variations of Kennedy such as "Kenadie" or "Kenitie." It is not known when the spelling was changed, since the name Canada is found in America before the Revolution. Charles Kennady is probably the father of Thomas Canada/Kennady. Thomas was born in VA (declared on 1850 &60 census documents). Charles is not listed on the 1800 KY census, so it is probable that he was in VA at the time of Thomas' birth abt 1802. Charles is listed in the 1810 census enumeration of Floyd Co., KY. He is not listed in the Floyd Co., 1820 census, but reappears in the 1830 census of Pike Co., KY census (whether Charles was just missed in the 1820 Floyd enumeration or was elsewhere is not known). It should be noted that Pike Co., KY was formed from Floyd Co. in 1821. The only known Cannaday (or sound alike) families in the Floyd/Pike Co. area in the 1810 to 1830 era were those of Charles and of Ruth Cannaday/Caneda who appears in the 1820 Floyd Co. and the 1830 Pike Co. census and a Thomas Caneda and Andrew Caneda who appear in the 1830 Pike Co. census. Thomas and Andrew are of the correct age to be Charles's Canada's sons married after the previous census. It is probable that Charles and Ruth are related, but they are not man and wife since they have separate family 12 listings in the 1830 census. The 1820 Floyd Co., KY census shows Ruth with the following listing: 2 males 18-25, 1 male 26-45, 2 females 16-18, 1 female 26-45. This means that Ruth was probably born after (1820-45 = 1775) 1775. The listing also shows that 3 people in this household were foreigners not naturalized. By the 1830 Pike Co. census her household is down to 1 male 40 to 50, 1 female 50-60 and 1 female 80-90. It is not likely that Ruth was a parent of Thomas or Andrew Cannaday. Charles was the only Kennady (or any name that sounds similar) in Floyd Co. in1810. His census listing shows 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, and Charles in the 26-45 age group. Also in the household were 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, and one female 16 to 26. (NOTE - some census CDs show the listing as 11110-1201000 and this is incorrect - a copy of the actual census page clearly shows the listing as 12010-111000). The 1830 Pike Co., census shows Charles with a listing of 2 males 5-10, 2 males 40-50, 1 male 60-70, 1 female under 51 female 20-30, 1 female 50-60. I surmise that one of Charles' sons (perhaps Elijah who is not listed as a head of household in the census) and his wife and children were living in the same household. Thomas and Andrew Caneda, that I presume to be Charles' sons, were listed as heads of households and have the following 1830 Pike Co. listings: Thomas 1 male 20-30 and 1 female 20-30; Andrew 3 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 20-30and 1 female 20-30. A check of the FTM CD 229 Marriage Index for KY, TN, VA, WV, 1728 - 1850, shows the Pike Co. marriages of 3 males and 2 females in the period1822 - 1833 (other marriages appear in the 1840 to 50 time) --one of the males married a second time in 1833. They are; Andrew Canada to Peggy Hatfield-Jan. 29, 1824 Elijah Kenedy to Katherine Mead-April 24, 1828 (next listing is probably Elijah's second marriage) Eli Canada to Susan Tolar-Sep. 13, 1833 Thomas Canedy to Delilah Bevins-Sept. 10, 1829 Hiram Muncy to Nancy Canady-Feb. 12, 1827 Robert Rutherford to Jay Cannadya-May 19, 1822 (this name is probably Jane Cannaday) NOTE: The following information given to me by Jean Fultz who copied the information from a Pike County marriage book. Robert Brooke Library of Virginia Federal Records. War Department 27. Notes for Jean C. Sellards: Jenny (Sellards) Wiley was one of the southwestern West Virginia border heroines. The 1974 book "West Virginia Women" (p. 283-5) by Jim Comstock of Richwood WV says: "Her dramatic capture and escape from Indians in 1788-88 is an outstanding legend of border life in this area," and goes on to describe facts about her life. Continuation of Jenny's story that began in the notes under Hezekiah Sellards, her father. "The Wileys lived in a two room log cabin he had built on a branch of Walkers Creek. By 1887 (error, should be 1787) they had 4 children. One gloomy afternoon in late fall, when Mrs. Wiley was at home with the children, and a 15 year old brother, Mr. Borders came by to warn her he feared that Indians were near. She wanted to finish a web of cloth she was weaving, but promised to follow on to his home with the children. As Mrs. Wiley hurried to leave, suddenly the house was filled with whooping Indians. She tried to protect the children, but the three older ones and her brother were quickly cut down and scalped before her eyes. Her captors let her carry the youngest child as they hurried away with them. Thus began a nightmare which lasted almost a year for Jenny. The Indians hurried her along with them across the Tug River, to the headwaters of the Twelvepole, and back toward Tug. As she grew tired and slower, they took the 15-month old child from her arms and dashed out its brains against a tree on a creek in upper Wayne Co. still called Jenny's Creek Finding the tug a raging torrent, The Indians swam it anyway, one on either side of Jenny. After resting awhile, they hurried on to the Levisa and swam it. No longer afraid of pursuit, they moved more slowly toward the Ohio, which they reached at the mouth of the Little Sandy nine days after their attack on the Wiley cabin. Unable to cross the Ohio, the Indians traveled up the Little Sandy and crossed to the Cherokee Fork of the Big Blaine Creek. There Mrs. Wiley gave birth to a premature son, which the Indians also killed at the age of "three moons" 18 because it cried when set adrift on bark on the creek. About the first of April the Indians made camp in a rockhouse at the mouth of Little Mudlick Creek, near the site of an old Indian town. There they stayed through the summer, and Mrs. Wiley had to work hard to raise corn, do the cooking, and keep firewood gathered. Two chiefs, a Shawnee and a Cherokee, were in the party. At first she could only talk to "Cap John" the Cherokee, who spoke English, though she learned some of the Indian words as time went on. She learned she had been capture because the Indians thought she was a member of the family of Mathias Harmon, who killed a son of the Cherokee chief. The Shawnee chief claimed her saying she would replace a daughter he had lost. In October the Indians again became stirred up over conflict with the whites. They brought a young white man into camp, then took him away. Listening, Mrs. Wiley learned he had been tortured and burned at the stake. Then the Indians began looking on her with hostility, so that she expected also to be killed. About that time, perhaps to save her from torture and also perhaps at her request, the old Cherokee bought Mrs. Wiley from the Shawnee for a high price, exacting a promise that she would teach his women to weave. In a vision or a dream she saw the young man who had been killed and he showed her the way to go, pointing out a blockhouse she would find in that direction. Soon afterward all the Indians left camp, leaving Mrs. Wiley tied with rawhide thongs. In the night she rolled out into the rain to wet her bonds and soon managed to free herself. Wading swift streams when to hide her footprints, she hastened across the mountains, following down streams when she dared, hoping to reach a river she had seen in her dream. One of the streams she waded is called Jenny's Creek, in Johnson County, Ky. Early one morning Mrs. Wiley reached the Levisa River just below the mouth of John's Creek. Across the River was the fort she had seen in her dream. She cried out for the people in the fort to come and get her. Henry Scaggs, about 80, was the only man at the fort, the others having gone on a scouting trip. Women at the blockhouse helped Mr. Scaggs build a crude raft on which he crossed the river and ferried Mrs. Wiley over. Just as they reached the fort, the band of Indians broke out of the thicket on the other side. "Honor, Jenny, honor," the old Cherokee Chief called. He soon turned back into the woods when she did not answer. A little later a group of men at the fort took Mrs. Wiley back to Waker's Creek and her husband. Afterward she had five more children, and she often said "The Lord gave me back my family." Later the Wiley and Borders families moved to Kentucky, settling on the Big Sandy just above the mouth of Tom's Creek, where Jenny Wiley lived until her death in 1831.The five children born to Mrs. Wiley after her return were Hezekiah, Jane, Sarah, Adam Prevard ("Vard), and William. Today she doubtless has thousands of descendants. Jane married Richard Williamson, settled on Twelvepole Creek, and reared a large family. Her daughter Merinda married William Smith, and was the mother of seven children who grew to maturity: Matt, Thomas, Alie, Albert and Margaret. Thomas and and Jack Sellards, John Borders, Mathias Harmon and Henry Scaggs also have many descendants living in the Tri-State Area and across the United States. Jenny Wiley Memorial Stone reads: Jenny Wiley 1760-1831, Historic Pioneer Mother captured by Indians, October 1, 1789 at Walkers Creek, Va. Witnessed slaying of her brother and five children by savages. Was held captive for several months on Little Mud Lick Creek in the present Johnson county, Ky. Se escaped the Indians to Harmon Station at Block House Bottom and was later united with her husband, Thomas Wiley in Virginia. Mrs. Wiley returned to Johnson County, Ky with her husband and a cabin was built about the year 1800 where they reared five children. Jenny Wiley died in 1831. Francis, a descendant of Captain Henry Francis. CAPTAIN HENRY FRANCIS 1733 to October 14, 1780 According to the Frederick County Maryland Court records, March Court 1749[50], Dr. Orlando Griffith petitioned the Courts to bind three children to him for a number of years to repay him for taking them and their mother into his home and caring for them. He stated he had taken an old woman named Mary Francis and her three children into his home about five years previous. Mary had now died and he was seeking the court to bind the children, Henry about 16 years, William about 12 years and Samuel about 7 years to him “for such a term of years as you will judge necessary and will be sufficient to make him satisfaction for the trouble and charges he has been at.” He further stated that it was what Mary wanted. The Justices of the Court, upon reading the petition, did grant the request and bound William and Samuel unto Dr. Griffith until their 21st birthday with the provision that he teach them to read, write and learn “the three first rules in arithmetic. The first record found of Henry in Virginia was recorded in the payroll records of Colonial Soldiers of Virginia. The July 13, 1756 Roll of Capt. Christopher Gist’s Company had the following information: Henry Francis, Private in Capt. Gist’s Co., enlisted on Feb 1, 1756, age 22 years, 5'7" tall, dark. He enlisted at Fredericks, Virginia. He gave his home place as Maryland, and his occupation as shoemaker. ......He obtained the rank of Sgt. and was a loyal soldier during the various wars before being discharged by Col. Adam Stephens. Henry was back on active military duty with the Montgomery County Virginia Militia by 1776. He was appointed Ensign on January 10, 1776 and was promoted to Lt. on April 4, 1776. He took the Oath of Allegiance in 1777, and was promoted to Captain of the Militia in April 1778. He fought in several battles in Virginia and North Carolina, often being sent to protect the Virginia Lead Mines. Revolutionary War Pension records indicate that Captain Henry Francis and his sons, John and Henry Jr., were in the Battle of Kings Mountain. (When Henry Jr. died, it was noted in Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas, that he was one of the last of the Kings Mountain Heroes.) While on patrol in North Carolina, word was received that a large party of Tories were in route to cross the Yadkin River at Shallow Ford. The two forces met at "Battle Branch" approximately one mile west of the Shallow Ford Crossing about 10:00am on October 14, 1780. This is where Captain Francis was shot in the head and killed by a Tory. His son, John, reported shooting at the Tory and it is believed that he killed him. Captain Francis was buried on a hillside near a large poplar tree, and the grave was marked by several fieldstones. A reminder of the battle is now marked with a tombstone, bearing the following inscription: Henry Francis, Captain, Rev War VA Militia, October 14, 1780. 22 Children of Henry Francis and Leah ? are: 99 i. ii. iii. Notes for Hezekiah Sellards: In the book "West Virginia Women" written and published by Jim Comstock of Richwood, WV there is a report on Jenny Wiley one of the southwestern West Virginia border heroines. The report was written by Doris Miller. She says there are many versions of the famous story, and a few of the versions have come directly from Mrs. Wiley. She says " in "The Founding of Harmon's Station and the Wiley Captivity" published in 1910, William Elsey Connelley set down in great detail the story told by Adam Prevard Wiley, son of Jenny, as his mother had told it to him. About Jenny's father, the story says, "Jenny Wiley was the daughter of Hezekiah Sellards, a Scotch-Irish pioneer in the Shenandoah Valley, who became familiar with the forests beyond the New River on Hunting trips. He led a colony to settle about Walker's Creek in Tazewell County about 1860 (error - should be 1760) Only 4 children of the large Sellards family lived to maturity. Thomas and Jack, and two daughters. The older girl married John Borders, a British soldier in the Revolution, who chose to remain in this country. The other, Jean or Jennie, married Thomas Wiley, an emigrant from the north of Ireland, in 1779.
