A League of His Own letter from the executive director Dear Friends, integral part in shaping this ground-breaking and award-winning program. For the past several years, we’ve worked on building a culture of philanthropy at Akron Children’s Hospital because we believe kids rule, yet we understand we cannot do our best for our patients alone. So, we reached out to you, our “village,” and the response was overwhelming. We also invite you to join us as we recognize our major supporters at our ‘Champions’ events, and learn how three forward-thinking sisters with an amazing idea created a lasting legacy for pediatric care in the Mahoning Valley. Additionally, you’ll discover the latest developments made in our organization, including our recent recognition by U.S. News & World Report. When we called, you answered. Because of the generous support you have given and continue to give, Children’s can provide the best care for our greatest shared asset: our children. Whether it was a gift of time, talent or treasure, what you’ve done has made a difference in the life of a child, something of which we can all be proud. In this issue of Children’s Progress, we explore how our new culture takes shape. “A League of His Own,” introduces you to Tyler Platt and his family, who were so appreciative to Children’s for the care their son received that they found a new way to give back to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. Previously, she served as the coordinator for corporate and foundation relations. Prior to working at Akron Children’s, Williams was the development manager at OneCommunity from 2008 to 2009. Additionally, she served in a variety of positions for nearly three decades at the Diocese of Ohio before ending as the director of stewardship and development from 2003 to 2008. Cheryl Williams was recently named director of corporate partnerships at the Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation. In her role at the hospital, Williams is responsible for the management of corporate giving and engagement strategies as well as the development of corporate fundraising and partnership strategies. Williams believes philanthropy is an essential means toward adequately addressing the needs of children and families, and that business philanthropy is a key component of a healthy and viable community. “We want to draw attention to the overall benefits and importance of corporate philanthropy at Akron Children’s,” she said. “Companies can benefit by supporting not only the hospital, but by supporting the health and well-being of children in our community.” Williams said the corporate giving program will present opportunities to bring consistency to how Akron Children’s manages current and potential donor relationships with companies of all sizes. “We are enhancing the hospital’s mechanisms for partnering with businesses, whether this includes corporate grants, employee volunteer and giving campaigns, cause-related marketing strategies, or direct giving,” she said. Williams earned her Bachelor of Science in management from Indiana Wesleyan University, along with a certificate in human services. Currently, she is completing her Masters in Public Administration from The University of Akron, and is a certified fundraising executive. 4 CHILDREN’S PROGRESS | SUMMER 2012 ‘Kids GIVE’ thanks young donors Anthony Solari, a Kids GIVE member, raised $2,542 for Akron Children’s Hospital’s 2012 “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” Radiothon. When Anthony Solari was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January 2011, Akron Children’s Hospital was there to save his life. After he spent many months undergoing rehabilitation, Anthony decided to raise funds for the 2012 “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” Radiothon and signed up for the Kids GIVE program at the Change Bandit Bash. Kids GIVE is a donor recognition group especially for children who have supported the hospital. Becoming a Change Bandit is the most popular way kids get involved. More than 60 kids have joined the Kids GIVE program, and parents are encouraged to enroll their children so they may receive a newsletter, personalized member certificate, invitations to special kid-friendly events and other benefits. “It was in rehab when Anthony first realized that a lot of kids like him have real struggles AKRONCHILDRENS.ORG/GIVING 5 and need great doctors and therapists to get better. He wanted to become a Change Bandit to say ‘thank you’ and give back in a meaningful way,” said Laureen Solari, Anthony’s mother. The 9-year-old won the individual award at the Change Bandit Bash, raising $2,542 through garage sales and donations from friends, family and classmates. “The hospital benefits greatly from the support of kids like Anthony in our community,” said Sara Lundenberger, special events coordinator for Akron Children’s. “We are amazed by how much these kids do for us, and we’re thankful for their generosity.” For more information about the Kids GIVE program, please call 330-543-8340. Akron Children’s Hospital Kids GIVE program is supported by PNC. A P T I H P Y B R HD In 2001, Sarah Friebert, MD, came to Akron Children’s Hospital with a vision: create a comprehensive pediatric palliative care program tthat would help any child needing its services. Ten years later, this vision visio has evolved into the Haslinger Palliative Care Center, one of the largest Family Pediatric Palliativ and most dynamic pediatric programs of its kind in pedia the country. As the director, Friebert and her team direc of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, therapists, prac social workers and bereavement specialists care berea for patients of all ages w with complex, chronic or lifethreatening childhood diagnoses. Together they combine di comprehensive medical c care and pain management while offering psychosocial, emotional, practical, psychosoc spiritual and educational support. Abigail Myers Beloit, Ohio its 10th birthday On July 27, the center celebrated ce at the Akron Civic Theater. Theate The evening provided an opportunity for Friebert, the hospital and the community to take a look back at so some of the remarkable milestones achieved throughout the past decade … thro and to anticipate what’s in store. 6 CHILDREN’S PROGRESS | SUMMER 2012 Y D H A Palliative Care! Taking the Risk When Friebert first envisioned the center, she knew that she had her work cut out for her. “I knew the potential for this program, but I didn’t know exactly how to create it in this community,” said Friebert. “I knew very little about business planning, staffing or fundraising – they don’t teach you that in medical school! I met with the head of our home care agency, and together we wrote out the first business plan for the Pediatric Palliative Care Center … on a napkin.” After formalizing the plan, the hospital sought funding resources. Because palliative care provides services not always covered Haslinger. “I knew Sarah’s plan and advocacy would not only fill a need at the hospital, but become a model for other hospitals nationally.” With the Haslinger Foundation’s support, the Pediatric Palliative Care Center became an official hospital program, and, as Friebert said, put pediatric palliative care “on the map.” Expanding Care During the next decade, Friebert and her staff worked tirelessly to enhance the level of service and programs offered at the center. And it paid off. “What we’ve accomplished in 10 years in terms of clinical care, education, advocacy and research, make up a body of work that I’m very proud of.” - Sarah Friebert, MD by health care reimbursement, outside philanthropic support was – and still is – essential. Friebert’s hopes were answered by a substantial endowment from the center’s future namesake: the Haslinger Family Foundation, spearheaded by its board leader, Sandra Haslinger. As a former nurse, Haslinger knew first-hand the importance of establishing a program of this caliber, particularly as she recalled caring for a 2-year-old boy with leukemia. “A palliative care program would have given me the tools to be so much more effective when helping him and his family,” said AKRONCHILDRENS.ORG/GIVING 77 Her team grew from three to 26, enabling Friebert to increase the number of patients served by providing care beyond the walls of the hospital. This community-based care became a cornerstone for Akron Children’s program, as well as a much-needed reprieve for patients like Caroline Lyman, who suffered from mitochondrial disease, and her parents, Jennifer and Marty. “Palliative care allowed us to turn what normally would have been hospital stays into care we could work through in our own home,” said Jennifer. “It made a world of difference for all of us, including Caroline. We could be together as a family.” Jennifer. “Every hospital should be taking notes from this group. They certainly made their mark in terms of what palliative care is and should be.” The center also initiated a fellowship training program – one of just a handful of accredited, pediatric-focused hospice and palliative medicine fellowships in the country. For Friebert, this helped ensure that the legacy of caring they were building would continue for years to come. Earning Accolades Soon, others across the nation began to take notice of the work at Akron Children’s. In 2009, Friebert received the Children’s Miracle Network Achievement Award, which recognized her for her commitment to pediatric health care and the great strides she made in her field. Under the leadership of Sarah Friebert, MD, the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center has received numerous accolades for its work with chronically ill patients and their families. Though Caroline passed away three years ago at the age of 12, Jennifer noted that the last years of her daughter’s life were her best because of the services, programs and philosophies of the Palliative Care Center at Akron Children’s Hospital. “It’s not giving up or throwing in the towel. It’s making the best use of someone’s life,” said Jennifer. “Instead of giving up hope, you gain hope. When you have a child who never had a prognosis to live beyond the age of 3, that’s all you have to hold on to.” Championing Education In addition to providing care, it became a program mission to provide leadership in education, research and advocacy initiatives in pediatric palliative care regionally and nationally. In 2008, the Center to Advance Palliative Care chose Akron Children’s to become a national training center for hospitals planning to start or enhance their own pediatric palliative care programs. The decision came as no surprise to Jennifer. “Their ability to relate to not just the child who has the illness but to the family as a whole is something that the entire medical community should mirror,” said In July 2012, the Pediatric Palliative Care Center at Akron Children’s received the 2012 American Hospital Association’s ‘Circle of Life’ award. Honoring pioneering programs in palliative and end-of-life care, Akron Children’s program was just one of three selected in the country. “The recognition is wonderful, because it helps raise awareness that palliative care is miraculous care,” said Friebert. “It’s humbling to receive these awards, and I’m grateful that they open new avenues to help us spread the word of the good work we’re doing.” Incorporating an Endowed Chair In 2011, Akron Children’s received $1.2 million to establish what is believed to be the first pediatric palliative care endowed chair position in the nation: the Sarah Elizabeth Friebert, MD Leadership Chair in Pediatric Palliative Care. Named in honor of Friebert, who serves as the first chair holder, the endowed chair provides an annual source of income that enables her to pursue innovative programs and efforts to implement at the center. It was all made possible by donations from the Haslinger Family Foundation and other leadership gifts (see sidebar). “The chair will allow us to provide unreimbursed, out-of-the-box programming that’s needed and valued,” said Friebert. “It demonstrates that pediatric palliative care is something worth supporting at this level and is important to any top-tier children’s hospital.” 8 CHILDREN’S PROGRESS | SUMMER 2012 Mark and Cathy Clark: supporting compassionate care When the Haslinger Family Foundation committed to funding the endowed chair at the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center, it did so with one request: that other donors match its pledge. Mark and Cathy Clark of Akron, Ohio responded to the need and recently made a $200,000 donation towards the Sarah Elizabeth Friebert, MD Leadership Chair in Pediatric Palliative Care. “Supporting the endowed chair was not a hard decision to make,” said Cathy. “In our family, we had the typical illnesses and occasional broken bones, but it’s nothing compared to what these patients and their families endure. I feel very blessed that we’re able to help.” The Clarks are no strangers to Akron Children’s Hospital or the Pediatric Palliative Care Center. Since 1987, Cathy has been a member of the hospital’s Women’s Board, and she began working as a liaison between the Board and the Palliative Care Center in 2007. Today, she serves as chairperson of the Center’s Community Leadership Team. Paving the Way Even after achieving all these milestones, Friebert said that the inevitable question is, “What’s next?” “What we’ve accomplished in 10 years in terms of clinical care, education, advocacy and research, make up a body of work that I’m very proud of,” said Friebert. “It’s a vision being brought to fruition, but that doesn’t mean that the vision is over. There’s always more to do.” What’s in store for the next 10 years? Keeping the forward momentum – expanding the center’s footprint into new geographies, performing more research and data analysis to review past practices and determine future work, and continuing to educate and train the workforce. AKRONCHILDRENS.ORG/GIVING 9 Mark and Cathy Clark recently donated $200,000 in support of the Sarah Elizabeth Friebert, MD, Leadership Chair in Pediatric Palliative Care endowed fellowship. “A strong medical foundation makes for a strong community, and that’s what we hope to achieve with the endowed chair at our Pediatric Palliative Care Center,” said Cathy. “Mark and I are both very proud to know the staff personally and to be able to help. They’re so appreciative, but I hope they realize that we – the Akron community and the community at large – are the ones who benefit.” And Friebert and the center will continue to rely on the support of their donors to keep these activities in action. “The support of our community, the Haslinger and Clark families, and the rest of our donors really catapulted our ability to build our program of more depth, breadth and impact,” said Friebert. “They’ve become our friends and partners, and we look forward to another decade of partnerships.” And her final birthday message for Akron Children’s, the center’s supporters and the community at large? “Thank you for trusting, supporting, invigorating and inspiring us,” said Friebert. “We couldn’t have done any of this without you.” Akron Children’s ranks among the best Whether we’re providing care to premature babies or helping patients create art and music in the Emily Cooper Welty Expressive Therapy Center, Akron Children’s Hospital strives to be one of the best hospitals for patient care, and our hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The hospital was recently ranked in eight pediatric specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings, including: • 24th in urology • 28th in pulmonology • 30th in neonatology • 35th in cancer • 31st in nephrology • 35th in orthopedics • 37th in neurology and neurosurgery • 49th in cardiology and heart surgery “The goal of our work in clinical care, education and research is simply to be the best we can be for the benefit of our patients and their families,” said Shawn Lyden, executive vice president for Akron Children’s. “However, being included among the best children’s hospitals in the nation is certainly gratifying.” In 2011-2012, Akron Children’s made the U.S. News list in four areas: orthopedics (33th), pulmonology (40th), nephrology (42nd), and neonatology (48th). “Akron Children’s Hospital deserves high praise for its accomplishments,” said Avery Comarow, Health Rankings editor. “Our goal at U.S. News is to identify and call attention to pediatric centers like Akron Children’s.” Lyden credits Akron Children’s growth, recruitment of top medical talent and pursuit of excellence for the expanded recognition. “Whether it is our never-ending quest to improve outcomes for children with asthma or an innovative technique that allows us to correct a child’s heart arrhythmia without radiation exposure, our reputation for innovative quality care continues to grow regionally and nationally,” Lyden said. The full rankings and methodology are available at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals. 10 CHILDREN’S PROGRESS | SUMMER 2012 An extension of care Partnership with pediatrician helps fuel regional growth counties west of the hospital that helped jumpstart his medical journey, he still maintains an ongoing partnership with it. “When you look at our surrounding health centers, Akron Children’s has a culture that’s most like ours,” said Trippe. “We always gravitate toward partnering with those types of providers.” Akron Children’s Hospital’s close working relationships with local physicians and community hospitals are an essential ingredient of the hospital’s regional growth strategy. Doctors such as Trippe provide critical support of Akron Children’s efforts to increase access to pediatric services for patients and families throughout northern Ohio. Though he now has a successful pediatrics practice in Norwalk, Ohio, Glenn Trippe, MD, FAAP, has never forgotten his longstanding ties to his hometown, Akron, and Akron Children’s Hospital. Glenn Trippe, MD, FAAP, describes himself as a “Rubber City” kid. A veteran pediatrician who runs his own practice, Trippe is an Akron native with a strong history with Akron Children’s. He was a patient at the hospital as a child, and more importantly, he completed his pediatric residency at Akron Children’s in 1979, where he was chief resident. Today, Trippe operates his practice, New Beginnings Pediatrics Inc., on the Fisher-Titus Medical Center campus in Norwalk with a satellite location on the Bellevue Hospital campus. He leads a team of four associate pediatricians, two of whom – Wendy Millis, MD, FAAP, and Paul Wnek, MD, FAAP – also completed their residencies at Akron Children’s. Even though New Beginnings Pediatrics is three AKRONCHILDRENS.ORG/GIVING 11 “We’re fortunate to have partners like Dr. Trippe to help us reach more children who need pediatric services that may not be available, or easily accessible, in their area,” said Shawn Lyden, executive vice president of Akron Children’s Hospital. The majority of New Beginnings Pediatrics specialty referrals for services such as orthopedics, genetics, pulmonology and neurology go to Akron Children’s Hospital. Trippe also teamed up with Akron Children’s physicians J.R. Bockoven, MD, and Thomas Enlow, MD, to provide hospital rotational clinics on-site in Norwalk. “We view Akron Children’s as our partner, network and primary center,” said Trippe. “Part of our expansion is to put Akron Children’s clinics in the same location as us. We’re working with the hospital to determine what else they can bring to our area.” Two memorable evenings, one important message Hospital thanks supporters at annual ‘Champions’ events ‘Champions for our Valley’s Children’ from left: John Zoilo, executive director of Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation; William Considine, president and CEO of Akron Children’s Hospital; James Sisek of Farmers Trust, manager of the Kikel Charitable Trust; and JoAnn Stock, director of development for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. Akron Children’s Hospital staff, patient families and the public were invited to enjoy gourmet food and wine and beers tastings of more than 150 options. Wine and Wishes was created by Greg and Tiffany Michalec in honor of their twins Katie and Cory who were born 14 weeks early. The twins experienced numerous complications and were transported to Akron Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Today, they are healthy 8-year-olds and to thank the hospital, the couple pledged to raise $1 million in 10 years. This year, the event raised more than $181,000 bringing the seven-year total to more than $900,000 for Akron Children’s. John Crow, MD, Wine & Wishes founders and grateful parents, Tiffany and Greg Michalec, and Bill Artman from Giant Eagle celebrate the success of the 2012 “An Evening of Wine and Wishes.” Attendees had the opportunity to bid on items offered during live and silent auctions. Items included Wizard of Oz collectible items, sports memorabilia, a puppy, fine wine gift cards and much more. “Events like these are so important to the hospital because they not only raise funds, but they raise awareness,” said Sara Lundenberger, special events coordinator at Akron Children’s. “It brings a whole new group of people to the hospital who might not have known about Akron Children’s and the wonderful care we provide.” This year’s event was made possible through generous sponsorships from Giant Eagle, Miller-Coors, WNIR, Thomas’ English Muffins, Montrose Auto Group, Allen Keith Construction and North American Breweries. In the stands were Tyler’s parents, Mike and Kelley. It was a joyous moment for the pair. Barely a year ago, they didn’t know if their son would ever play the game again. When a debilitating disease threw a curve ball at Tyler’s life, the specialists in the Rehabilitative Services department at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley helped him come back swinging … in a big way. A debilitating diagnosis In January 2011, Tyler complained to his parents about a pain in his legs. At first, Mike and Kelley didn’t think it was serious; however, during the next five days, it grew much worse. “He didn’t want to go outside to play,” said Mike, noting how uncommon this was for his active son who loved to play sports. “He couldn’t come down the steps to go to school; he could barely walk. He didn’t want to do anything.” Even though doctors at another hospital told the Platts that Tyler was most likely experiencing a sinus infection and growing pains, his parents grew increasingly concerned when he could no longer walk in a straight line. When they took him to his pediatrician, Tyler failed all his reflex tests. “Our doctor told us to take him straight to Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley in Boardman,” said Mike. “They had a bed waiting for him.” Tyler Platt throws out the first pitch at the Mahoning Valley Scrappers game. Tyler’s breathing became labored after he was admitted, and he was transported immediately to the hospital’s main campus. After several examinations and a spinal tap, Tyler was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder called Guillain-Barré syndrome. 20 CHILDREN’S PROGRESS | SUMMER 2012 Affecting only one or two people out of 100,000, Guillain-Barré (ghee-yan bah-ray) syndrome occurs when the immune system attacks the nerves, weakening the limbs and other systems, eventually spreading and causing paralysis. Unfortunately, it’s a condition for which there is no cure. Those diagnosed with Guillain-Barré undergo treatments to reduce the symptoms and alleviate complications as they recover. During the days after his diagnosis, Tyler underwent therapy so that he would be stable enough to return home. However, the disorder left him partially paralyzed. “We brought Tyler home in a wheelchair in February,” said Mike. “We knew we had a tough road ahead of us.” A fighting spirit Now, Tyler faced a new challenge: relearning how to perform the most basic functions, like chewing, swallowing, drinking and walking. But like any champion would, Tyler entered this next stage with confidence and determination. “He was a trouper,” said Mike. “He never complained. When he was in the hospital, he never asked to go home. He never asked ‘Why me?’” Tyler underwent outpatient occupational and physical therapies at the Rehabilitative Services department at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. Every day, the Rehabilitative Services staff works with infants, children and teens who require therapy following an illness or injury, or to manage the effects of a chronic condition such as cerebral palsy or autism. As soon as he entered its doors, Tyler built an immediate rapport with the staff. “Tyler is such a sweet kid,” said Nancy Herron, MOT, OTR/L, Tyler’s occupational therapist. “He was so cooperative and easy to work with.” Tyler made several visits to the department each week, working with Herron and other therapists to redevelop his strength and endurance while relearning basic tasks like tying his shoes. AKRONCHILDRENS.ORG/GIVING 21 Three Sisters – One Legacy for the Valley In March 2011, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley was named the residual beneficiary of one-half of the Kikel Charitable Trust. Named after sisters Angela, Josephine and Jenny Kikel, the trust provides ongoing support to local hospitals that care for children. It was created in 1998, after the passing of the last living sister, Angela. Each year, a portion of the trust will be distributed to support Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley programs and services that help children like Tyler. In 2011, a large portion of the $1,070,000 initial distribution went toward expanding and upgrading services in the radiology department in the Valley. This included new equipment, software upgrades, and redesigned rooms and machinery. In April 2012, Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley received this year’s distribution in the amount of $379,096. The hospital is currently reviewing a number of potential projects and needs in the Mahoning Valley to determine the best use of the funds. Tyler Platt and his father, Mike, enjoy a Mahoning Valley Scrapper’s baseball game. “He worked so hard,” said Herron. “His parents did exercises with him at home, which was great commitment on their part.” After five months of therapy, Tyler had nearly made a full recovery. Not only did the Rehabilitative Services team help him regain what he lost before his diagnosis, they also helped him back to his great love: baseball. “Tyler loves that game,” said Mike. “I think we knew he was going to be ok when he started playing ball again. We knew therapy was going well, but when we saw him out in the field, acting like a kid for the first time in months, we felt like we’d finally made it through.” By the end of July, Tyler was an all-star baseball player. That same year, he was a tackle for the Niles Little Red Dragons football team. While his final doctor’s appointment was in May 2012, Tyler still maintains a connection with those who helped him. “He actually misses therapy and asks to go back,” laughed Mike. “The staff there was so great.” A long-lasting relationship Throughout the entire experience, Mike and his wife, Kelley, appreciated the way the staff at Akron Children’s Hospital went above and beyond to make Tyler’s situation easier for their family. “They were just so personable,” said Mike. “They made us feel at home all the time, like we were a part of the family. No matter what was going on, they always went out of their way to make us at ease.” The Platts were so grateful that they hosted a charity softball game last summer in Niles to benefit the hospital. “Tyler’s father is a police officer, and the game was between the local safety forces – firefighters versus police officers,” said JoAnn Stock, director of development at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. “They also had an auction and several other fundraising components mixed into the day. In the end, they raised $1,239 for our hospital.” 22 CHILDREN’S PROGRESS | SUMMER 2012 What is Guillain-Barré syndrome? Affecting only one or two people out of 100,000, Guillain-Barré (ghee-yan bah-ray) syndrome occurs when the immune system attacks the nerves, weakening the limbs and other systems, eventually spreading and causing paralysis. Unfortunately, it’s a condition for which there is no cure. Those diagnosed with Guillain-Barré undergo treatments to reduce the symptoms and alleviate complications as they recover. This year, the Platt family will continue their support by hosting a golf outing to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley on Aug. 12 at the Mahoning Country Club in Girard. In addition to throwing out the first pitch at the YSU game, Tyler also had the opportunity to meet the San Francisco 49ers when they visited the hospital, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that Mike says is just another example of the ongoing support given to his son. “We’re just so thankful and happy the hospital is in our area,” said Mike. “If it wasn’t for Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley, Tyler wouldn’t be where he is today. It saved our son and kept our family together.” The Platt family was so grateful for the care Tyler received that they host a charity soft ball game to support the hospital.
