BEVERLY HILLS—My name is “Boo
Boo,” and am I ever a lucky little boy!
A very nice homeless man found me
and didn’t want me to be homeless,
too, so he brought me to the Friends
of Animals Foundation, and now a loving home can be found for me. I was
born about November 2012, so, I’m
still a puppy. But, even so, I have very
good manners, I get along great with
dogs of all sizes, and I love people.
Speaking of love, everyone that sees
me seems to fall in love with me! I’ve
heard everyone at FOAF and the Vet’s
office, where I was taken for a checkup, say, ”Oh, I love him!” That sure
makes me feel good! And, by the
way, the doctor said, beside the fact
that she loves me, that I’m in tip-top
shape!
Yes, I’m a Pit Bull Terrier, but please
don’t let that turn you away. So many
of us are abandoned and then not
adopted because we, unfortunately,
have a bad reputation. We are lovers,
not fighters. Remember that there are

CLARK GABLE’S SON ARRESTED
MALIBU—The son of renowned actor
Clark Gable was arrested Tuesday, April 2,
after a string of collisions along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.
According to reports, John Clark Gable,
52, reportedly rear-ended a vehicle near
the Malibu Pier around 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
The motorist of the struck vehicle followed Gable, who was driving a white Ford
Raptor pickup, and called 911 to report the
crash. Officials said Gable proceeded to
crash into six cars parked near Las Flores
Canyon Road, consequently pushing one
of the parked vehicles into the garage of
a home.
Investigators said it caused moderate to
major damage to the structure, though
there were no reported injuries.
One eastbound lane on PCH was shut
down due to clean-up and investigation of
the crashes. This resulted in a traffic backup to the Malibu Pier.

STUDIO CITY—On Friday, March 22,
Jason Kies was arrested in La Crescenta
after a series of alleged kidnapping attempts that day.
Kies, 37, was booked on eight felony
counts, including two separate incidents
of attempting to force two women in his
car. Both women fought back and fled the
scene.
The first incident occurred earlier in the
day when Kies reportedly tried to force

Following the incident, Gable was taken to the hospital for a blood test when police suspected him of driving under the influence. He was then sent to the MalibuLost Hills Station for the suspected DUI
along with hit and run.
In October 2012, Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station made public a new DUI mobile enforcement unit that is equipped to
assist with screening, sobriety tests, and
with collecting and retaining evidence of
investigations.
The results of Gable’s blood test have not
been released, and according to the sheriff’s department, Gable posted $15,000 bail
and left the station late Tuesday night.
After the incident, Gable indicated to
TMZ that he was not drinking, but admits
to going unconscious at the wheel. He
claims he has a history of brain
aneurysms, one back in 2006 and another in 2009, and will see a doctor regarding his head as soon as possible.

LOS ANGELES—Rumors were officially
confirmed by NBC on Wednesday, April 3 announcing that Jay Leno would be leaving the
"Tonight Show" and Jimmy Fallon would be
taking over as host in spring of 2014.
In addition to the change in host, the show
will move from Burbank, California to New
York City and about 200 jobs associated with
the show will be moved as well. The "Tonight
Show" took place in Burbank since 1972
when Johnny Carson moved it there.
Leno hosted the show for 22 years and decided to step down despite a contract with
NBC that extend through 2014. The 62-yearold congratulated Fallon in a statement saying, “I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold
on to the job until you’re the old guy. If you
need me, I’ll be at the garage.”

LOS ANGELES—Buying a home is always
an important decision for a family. The advantages are many for those who plan to
purchase their first home or their latest
home. There really is no debate when it
comes to buying a home or renting, when
it comes to it. Buying is always best.
In fact much of our economy is built on
the concept of homeownership and the benefit of providing much of the public with a
commodity that can in turn be used to spur
economic growth by such things as creating loans, more construction, added jobs and
a myriad of economic activity.
It’s no wonder the real estate market is on
the upturn despite a sluggish economy overall. The tax advantages of homeownership
are just one of the reasons why many opt for
buying a home instead of renting. As a
renter, you are eligible for a renter’s tax credit of $60 a year for a single person and $120
for a married couple.
On the other hand, those who own a home
will get a tax benefit for the property taxes
and the interest on the mortgage. Your
biggest tax break will be on the house payment you make each month since the majority of the mortgage payment at the beginning of your loan will go toward the interest which is tax deductible, unless the
loan is in excess of $1 million. It’s one of the
downsides of owning a mansion.
Thankfully, if you refinanced the home to
get some extra cash for unforeseen expenses,

or took out a home equity line of credit, the
Internal Revenue Service allows you to
again, deduct the interest from your taxes.
Under IRS rules, equity debts of $100,000
or less a fully deductible, but the remaining amount on your original mortgage
could restrict your tax benefit, making
things more complicated if you excessively leverage your home. So consult your tax
preparer for more specific information.
If you paid points in order to get a better
loan, then the IRS allows you to deduct the
points if the loan is to purchase or build your
main home. But be sure your loan meets all
of the qualifying requirements before you
deduct all the points.
Naturally, you’re allowed to deduct all of
your home-related expenses, which means
that expensive re-roofing work you had
done, along with the new tub in the bathroom will be fully deductible.
It’s easy to see why homeownership is so
advantageous compared to renting, yet
I’ve seen many dump their houses on the
bank even though they could easily make
their mortgage payments, they just felt it
was no longer beneficial to maintain the
house since it was worth less than what was
owed on it at that time. That is a bad move.
Why dump it when you can afford to keep
it. So don’t lose it. It’s like a stock. Its value will go back up if you are patient. In the
meantime, you still get the tax benefit.
Housing is always a war of attrition. You
make your gains on housing on the long
term not the short term. But if you’re going to live in a house, then enjoy it. A house
is a commodity so live in it and relish in it.
It’s your home.
Unfortunately, many of us are unwilling
to wait. We all want it now. And in real state,
it pays to do the opposite. Patience is the key
to success and profits. Despite a precipitous
drop in the market just three years ago, real
estate is back and getting better.
Homeownership should be the goal of all
renters despite their situations. Owning a
home not only gives you comfort and security, but it also opens up an avenue for a
future home purchase as well enable you to
build equity and access to credit for important purchases.

UNITED STATES—Dogwoods are certainly pretty as they bloom this time of year.
They are rare, but seen often enough in
nurseries to make one wonder why they are
even more scarce in local gardens. Those
that got sold in previous years should
now be prominent features around town.
The problem is that because they are not
happy in local climates, dogwoods become dogwon'ts. They won't bloom. They
won't provide good fall color. Many won't
even grow. Dogwoods prefer more humidity, so in local gardens, want to be sheltered from full sun exposure and drying
wind by larger trees or buildings.
Nurseries generally stock plants that are
appropriate for local climates. A few nurseries also have a few plants that would
rather be somewhere else, but can be
grown with certain accommodations. Reputable retail nurseries are generally careful to divulge which plants need more attention, and what their requirements are.
However, many of the big garden centers
in home improvement stores are more interested in selling what they can rather
than selling what is actually appropriate,
particularly since they thrive on turnover
and replacing plants that do not survive.
Not all plants are as easy to grow as junipers and oleanders are. Japanese maples
and rhododendrons like at least some degree of shelter from direct sun exposure and
dry heat; but the California fan palm
thrives in wicked heat. Plumerias and
coleus can be damaged by even slight
frost; but many apples and pears want more
frost. Spruces like even moisture; but
many yuccas rot without enough dry time.
This is why it is important to know how
to accommodate plants that may be less
than ideal for local climates. Those of us
who choose to grow plants that have special needs should at least give them what
they want if we expect them to perform as
we want them to.
Highlight: American Dogwood
The state tree of Missouri produces the
state flower of North Carolina, which are
both the state tree and state flower of Virginia, but no so exploited by the state that
it seems to be named for! The American
dogwood, Cornus florida, is such a classic
American tree that last year, young trees
were given to Japan to commemorate the
gift of Japanese flowering cherry trees
from Japan a century earlier.

it seems to be. Tight clusters of minute
flowers would not be much to look at, but
are surrounded by four big white bracts
(modified leaves) that really put on an impressive show before green leaves develop.
Many modern varieties have pink or nearly brick red bracts, and a few get variegated foliage as bloom dissipates. Foliage
can get quite colorful just before it falls in
autumn.
In the wild, American dogwoods are 'understory' trees that are happiest in forests
of larger trees that shelter them from
harsh sun exposure and drying wind. In relatively arid western climates, they want rich
soil, regular watering and partial shade at
least after noon. They are sensitive to reflected glare and wind, as well as alkalinity and salinity. (Too much fertilizer will
roast the foliage.) Since American dogwood
trees rarely get more than fifteen feet tall
in cultivation, they are proportionate to
sheltered atriums. Wild trees do not get
much taller than thirty feet.

LAUREL CANYON—You might inadvertently think it’s called Wild Acre. I was given a tour of the park recently by Gary, a local who regaled me with stores about the
good old days. As a young-en, he drove his
Model T on the fire roads in the hills overlooking Studio City. We tramped the Betty
Dearing and the U-Vanu trails. Since the late
80s the park has been owned collaboratively
by the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy
and the National Park Service.
Gary mentioned that he thought the name
Wilacre was not a contraction of Wild Acre,
but he’d heard it was named after a person.
Indeed Gary was right. The park is named
after Will Acres a former owner and silent
film star. Tracking down said Mr. Acres was
impossible. If you have any leads, let me
know.
1890s ownership records report that “a
Frenchman” owned the land and ran a sheep
ranch. Another trail turned cold. By the turn
of the century farming in Studio City had
cycled though several droughts. Sheep
prefer grazing on weeds, which grew abundantly under the cover of the walnut and
sycamore groves, which continue to thrive
in the park.
Who bought and sold exactly which parcels
in the hills is a little muddled, but we have
enough information to get the big picture

UNITED STATES—Have you ever watched
Animal Planet? Most of us haven’t, but for
those that have you’ll be surprised at the
things that you learn. Just the other day, I
stopped on Animal Planet and found myself
thoroughly engrossed in a documentary that
I was watching about the Great Barrier Reef
in Australia. It was quite fascinating to say
the least. As much as I wanted to change
the channel I found myself immersed in the
documentary. To discover that the Great
Barrier Reef consists of more than 2900 individual reefs and more than 900 islands was
awesome.
I have always been amazed by the various
bodies of waters that inhabit the planet.
What is most fascinating is the fact that we
truly have no idea what happens underneath
the surface. Yes, we’ve heard stories and
we’ve seen movies and television series depicting such phenomenon, but to actually see it first-hand in person is another tale.
There are so many species of animals that
call this destination home, its hard to fathom most of us have no idea about it. For
example, the saltwater crocodile has the ability to live near the reef and is considered one
of the largest reptiles. It’s a predatory creature that will attack if it feels its territory
has been infringed upon. There are varieties
of sea turtles including the green sea tur-

treat to watch video showing a batch of
green sea turtles hatching from the beach
and rushing to the ocean water before being consumed by prey that were well aware
of their arrival from under the ground.
There are neat creatures like the pipefish
that has been known to hide inside various
creatures to ensure its survival. There are
distinct species of sharks that still remain
the king of the sea as they are predatory
fiends that are persistent when it comes to
locating a meal. The unknown has always
been an alluring idea to our culture. We
want to know about those things that we
don’t, which is where tourists play a pivotal
role.
Venturing into the Great Barrier Reef is
not with risk. Venturing into these waters
can be as dangerous as it is exciting. Some
may be surprised to discover that the Great
Barrier Reef is just like any other aspect in
the world: its all about survival. The only
difficulty is that it takes place in the water.
There are creatures that have become quite
adaptable to their environment. They are
able to mimic their prey, some are able to
isolate or create protective walls around
their ‘homes’ to ensure intruders don’t go
snooping around.
Day in and day out it’s a battle to survive
these treacherous waters. Rather you’re a
small creature or a large one, everyone has
its weaknesses and one small mishap can
cost you your life. How can I best say this,
protect your surrounding at all cost, and
never, ever for a second think you’re safe,
as that can be a fatal mistake. The hunter
can easily become the hunted.
The depths of the Great Barrier Reef in
some places go beyond 300 feet. Yes, 300
feet. Can you imagine what lies at the
depths of those waters? I can only imagine.
It’s always been a dream of mine to see a live
octopus. It’s a creature that we only know
about from movies or what we’ve been told,
so too actually see the creature face-to-face
would be a sight to say the least.
We as people have to become not only
more educated, but more involved in the
various ecosystems that we live. It’s not
about catching a wild animal that no one has
ever seen; it’s about respecting an environment that so many non-humans call
home. Could you imagine if we had lions,
tigers, bears and snakes running amok in
the city?
It would not only be chaos, but those animals would be intruding on our environment; we have to view things the same way
for the Great Barrier Reef and other wild areas in the world. These areas are home to
animals that we have no idea about, where
we know nothing about their habitat or tactics for survival infringing upon that can be
deadly not only for the human being, but the
animal involved.

HOLLYWOOD—“G.I. Joe” returns once
again on the screen, but with a new cast and
director, “Retaliation” seems more like a reboot than the sequel to “Rise of Cobra” from
two years ago.
Director Jon M. Chu takes over the job
from Stephen Sommers and features an ensemble cast including Channing Tatum,
Arnold Vosloo, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce and
Lee Byung-hun, but oddly enough is headlined by two newbies-Dwayne Johnson and
Bruce Willis.
The film begins with a conflict already at
hand with little time to waste. Framed for
stealing nuclear weapons, the G.I. Joe team
are targets in being terminated. Fans will
be able to get a rude wake-up early on and
the surviving Joes are left with a huge mission to endure.
The Joes are downplayed as the nation’s
leading protecting unit to none other than
their infamous mortal enemies-Cobra. With

This frightening tale is not for the faint
of heart, as some twisted imagery and unexpected frights will keep audiences literally on the edge of your seat from start to
finish. This tale unlike its predecessor focuses on a group of young adults who ventures into the woods for a weekend getaway

her many challenges and decisions she
was forced to make, while balancing a career in the limelight.

UNITED STATES—On Monday, April 1,
Kevin Ware of Louisville had surgery after an open fracture during Sunday's
game against Duke on national television. Ware suffered one of the most horrendous basketball injuries. He had
surgery on Sunday afternoon to fix
his open fracture on his right tibia. The
Cardinals’ were distraught as soon as
they saw what had happened to him and
a lot of the team succumbed to tears.
The Louisville Cardinals were able to
win the game against the Duke Blue
Devils 85-63 and advance to the Final
Four.

and that he wanted them to go back out

the post game conference said if it wasn’t for Ware telling them that he doesn’t know if they would have played to
the level that they played. Ware had a
bone reset and a rod inserted into his
leg that lasted about two hours. The
wound caused by his bone puncturing
through his skin was also closed. He is
expected to stay in Indianapolis through
Tuesday.
He will be able to recover from this
injury and continue to play basketball
competitively. There is currently no
timetable on when he will be back. On
Monday a teammate posted a photo of

LOS ANGELES—On Sunday, March
31, Kobe Bryant passed Wilt Chamberlain to become the fourth alltime scoring athlete in NBA history. Kobe pulled up for a jumper
from the foul line against the Sacramento Kings Sunday night during
the second quarter, which gave
Kobe Bryant 31,421 career points
passing Wilt Chamberlain’s 31,419
career points.
Bryant scored 19 points and
handed 14 assists in the win over
the Kings. He now only trails Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl
Malone (36,928) and Michael Jordan
(32,392) to reach number one on
the all time scoring list. Kobe passed
his former teammate Shaquille
O’Neal for the No. 5 spot on the all
time scoring list. He said he isn’t focused on scoring the most points,
but that he really wants the sixth
championship ring. Bryant is averaging 27 points per game. He is 34
years old and in his 17th season in
the NBA moving up the scoring
list is more possible than winning
a championship for Bryant at this
point.
The Los Angeles Lakers are struggling to make the playoffs this season. The Lakers are one win back
from the Utah Jazz for the ninth
spot in the western conference.

UNITED STATES—On Sunday,
March 31, The University of Michigan (No. 4 seed) advanced to the final four for the first time since
1989. The Wolverines demolished
the Florida Gators (No. 3 seed) 7959 in the elite eight in the cowboy
stadium.
Wolverine freshman Nik Stauskas
scored a career high 22 points and
19 of them came in the first half.
Five of his six three pointers came
in the first half of the game. Trey
Burke had 15 points and seven assists.
Florida Gators Will Yeguette and
Kenny Boynton both had 13 points
in their loss to the Wolverines.

Michigan came off an 87-85 overtime
win against (No.1 seed) Kansas in
the sweet sixteen. The Wolverine’s
led through the first half up by as
many as 24 points, but went into half
time up by 17 points. The Florida

NCAA Tournament history to lose 3
times in a row in the elite eight. The
Wolverines went 10 for 19 from the
three-point line.
Michigan defeated Syracuse (No.
4 seed) on Saturday, April 6 in the
Final Four. Michigan will face
Louisville (No. 1 seed) on Monday,
April 8 for the national championship game.
