There’s a spine-tingling adventure waiting
for children in libraries this summer with the
Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge!
T
he challenge is a national
scheme to encourage primary
age children to read for
enjoyment throughout the
summer holidays while at the same
time maintaining reading levels for
back to school in September.
All our libraries will be involved in the
summer reading challenge. Every child
who joins “Creepy House” will receive
a fold-out Creepy House, illustrated by
Chris Riddell, on which to record details of
books read during the summer. There are
also lots of stickers, bookmarks, Creepy
House fortune-teller, fridge magnets, key
rings and wristbands to collect. Every
child who reads 6 books will receive a
certificate and medal. Fantastic to take
back to school in September to impress
your teachers!

The summer reading challenge gives
children a great chance to have fun with
books and to feel rewarded for reading.
It is not about children reading as many
books as they can; it’s about children
enjoying what they read, finding out more
about books; and knowing how to find
the books they’re interested in reading –
and sharing reading time with you! It also
means that your child continues to read
throughout the summer, enabling your
child to return to school in September with
maintained or improved reading skills.
Creepy House provides the opportunity
to have lots of spine-tingling fun and all
our libraries will have activities relating to
Creepy House. To find out library opening

ZooLab
Creepy House Workshop
Investigate and play detective in the
ZooLab Creepy House. What creepy
creatures lurk inside? Spaces are limited
for this event. Please contact the library in
advance for place availability. Booking
essential at all libraries and you will
need to join the Creepy House Summer
Reading Challenge before booking.
Suitable for 4 to 12 year olds.
Author Andrew Newbound
will be hosting the Creepy
House Mystery
Players aged 6 years+ get to put their
detective skills to the test as they travel
to the Awful Upstairs, along the
Gruesome Ground Floor and down into
the Spine-tingling Cellar, finding brainboggling clues that build to solve the
Mystery. Fun is guaranteed as you tackle
the repellent riddle, wrestle the
wretched word search, delve into the
beastly bag and even crack the
creepy code. It’s a real howl!
Spaces are limited for this event.

‘Ghost Busters’
Local History Storytelling
with Malcolm Hanson
Are there ghosts near you? Find out with
Happy Cat and Dolly as they go on a
ghost-hunting adventure and discover
the tales from your local area. Suitable
for 4 to 11 yr olds. Spaces are limited for
this event. Please contact the library in
advance for place availability and booking.
Bookstart Teddy Bears
Picnic for Families with
Pre-School Children
(Older brothers and sisters are
welcome to come along.)
Bring your bear and a picnic and come
and enjoy stories and rhymes with your
local library. Some of the picnics are in
parks local to the library, or outside the
libraries. There will be simple crafts,
music, face painting at some and a visit
from the Bookstart Bear. Some of the
picnics have live music. Please contact
the library regarding booking a place.

and booking
is essential.
All our summer activities
are very popular and many of
our events require prebooking therefore it is
advisable to contact
the library in advance
before making a special
journey. Some of
our events will be
unsuitable for organised
groups please check in
advance with the library
concerned if you want to
bring a group of children.
