MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOPS QUEEN ELIZABETH SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL Resilience Wednesday, November 20 -6:30 p.m. @The Stewart School Next School Council Meeting: Monday, November 18, 2013 Mental Health research increasingly is showing us that a child’s ability to “bounce back” from difficulties is a very important factor in their future mental well-being. We also know that this “resilience” is not something that everyone is born with, but it is something that everyone can learn. Come out to this workshop presented by Open Doors and Public health to learn about how to help you child (and perhaps yourself) be more able to rebound from life’s challenges. 6:15 p.m. in the QE School Library Separation & Divorce Childcare provided. School Council meetings are open meetings. You do not need to be a council member to attend. John Gow, Principal from PDCI will be speaking with the Council about plans for the coming year’s transition to 7-12 @ PDCI. Council News: Thank you to Sheri Hanna and Nancy Sweetnam who will be our School Council Co-Chairs for this school year. Thank you to everyone for the incredible support of our QSP Magazine Fundraiser. The totals are in and together we sold $6500 worth of magazine subscriptions, which is down slightly from last year. The school receives 30% of the total product sold, which means we have raised $1900. These proceeds will go towards the cost of Scientist in School workshops. Special thanks to Nancy Sweetnam for looking after this fundraiser. You can continue to support the school throughout the year online at www.qsp.ca (code 10454) as a percentage of sales will go to the school anytime magazines are purchased. Wednesday, November 27 -6:30 p.m. @The Stewart School Separation or Divorce has a very real and very large impact on parents and kids, since it is one of life’s biggest stresses. Come out to this workshop to learn about what “normal” child reactions are to separation and divorce, and what you can do as a parent to help your child cope in a healthier way with the stress of separation. HEALTHY EATING: The children have now had a few days to enjoy their Halloween treats. We would like to keep our focus on healthy snacks and lunches at school. In order to do this, we ask that children do NOT bring Halloween treats to school. Please keep these treats at home where you as parents are better able to decide what gets eaten, how much gets eaten and when it gets eaten. We thank you for your cooperation. Thank you to everyone for the donations to our Snack Bin program. Through your generosity we raised $400 to help us provide healthy snacks for all. Raising Healthy, Caring, Responsible, Children Children and youth are more likely to grow up healthy when they feel safe at home, at school, and in the neighbourhood. Three ways to help your children feel safer: 1. Be an “askable” parent, so your children learn they can tell you about things that concern them, especially personal safety issues. 2. Give practical suggestions on how your children can be safe in specific circumstances. 3. Reassure your children that your goal is to keep her or him safe.
