We began in the summer of 1980, when community leader Jon Lundin, (then RVC’s Director
of Continuing Education), established Whiz Kids College. While originally conceived as
a summer “college” for students with high academic abilities, Rock Valley College Whiz Kids
quickly widened its programming to include any youth with a zest for learning.
Rock Valley College Whiz Kids classes are designed to:
• Explore subjects more in depth
• Challenge students to learn new material through critical and creative thinking
• Offer opportunities for students to become acquainted with others who have similar academic interests
• Provide a supportive environment where students “learn by doing”
• Offer a variety of instructional methods to stimulate and challenge students
Students have fun using their imaginations, perfecting their talents, and gaining confidence
in academic areas. Parents like Rock Valley College Whiz Kids because it provides a positive
and stimulating environment for their children. We like it because we enjoy the kids and love
to see learning in action!
SPECIAL NEEDS: The College is committed to providing an accessible and supportive learning environment
for all Whiz Kids students. To help us meet this goal, at least three weeks in advance of the beginning of a
Whiz Kids class or Eagle Academic Camp, call the RVC Community & Continuing Education office at
(815) 921-3900. Notification of any disabilities or conditions requiring special accommodations or attention
will allow the College to determine reasonable accommodations which can be made. For adult students, call
the RVC Disability Support Services Office at (815) 921-2356.
Office Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm.

and admiring these creative and fun fairy homes! Come play in
our gardens and woods and use natural materials you will find on
our grounds and/or bring your own all-natural materials to create
a comfortable abode for our forest fairies (e.g. leaves, shells, rocks,
stones, pet hair, nut shells, feathers, exotic branches.) BRING:

explore and build simple and real life machines. Jake started as a
Whiz Kids student, quickly grew into the role of assisting his Dad,
and then took over the classes for several years. This year, Kassy
and Luke lead the Lego classes – and take on the challenge to
show the kids (and their family) a thing or two about engineering!
A true Lego family right here in Rockford!
Legos
(Ages 5-17) Engineering and technological principles are
presented as you become a LEGO inventor. Explore simple, real
life machines and use the ideas to build similar machines from
LEGOS. Create and build realistic, working models based on
problem-solving situations. Appropriate ate for Level I and Level
II students. Instructor will assign kits accordingly. NOTE: Students
do not bring home Lego projects.

(All ages welcome) Tae kwondo is a bare-handed military art form
and sport that uses the hands and feet for attack and defense.
Tae kwondo trains the body, but also focuses on development
of the mind. The objective of learning Taekwondo is to foster
growth in both body and mind through skill building and etiquette
lessons that aid in building courage, confidence and self-esteem.
Tae kwondo is a wonderful exercise for children who are still
growing as well as a good way for adults to increase their physical
endurance. Tae kwondo’s movements require extensive use of
the joints, which increases the limberness of one’s body and aids
young children in the development of coordination. Our classes
emphasize the tenants which are an integral part of Tae kwondo:
Build Confidence, Learn Self Defense, Improve Concentration,
Increase Self-discipline, Develop the, “Yes I Can!” Master Ha has
developed these programs with the knowledge of how children
process information and is the author of the first and only book on
methods for teaching young students the art of Taekwondo. Once
