In generous support of our church, the Bishop has offered FBSUMC the appointment of two associate pastors for
2014 - each uniquely skilled in helping us achieve our specific mission and vision. CLC is excited that God has brought
these gifted individuals to our church as we continue to “love God, grow together, and reach out.”
Amanda Dean
Reverend Amanda Dean grew up in Kingsport,
attending city schools and graduating from DobynsBennett High School in 1997. Amanda was raised
in the United Methodist Church and was actively
involved in leadership roles from a very early age. In
college, Amanda discerned a call to ministry while
active in the East Tennessee State University (ETSU)
Wesley Foundation. It was through her experience
with mission trips with Wesley that Amanda
discovered a passion for service. After graduation
from ETSU, Amanda served as a missionary with
Bahamas Methodist Habitat, worked in the southeast
jurisdictional office of United Methodist Volunteers
in Mission, and was the Director of Youth and Young
Adult Ministries at a large church in Chattanooga.
She was accepted to the Master of Divinity Program
at Duke University in 2007.
While at Duke, Amanda balanced academic
demands with her call to be actively engaged in
ministry, serving in several different field education
placements and leadership positions. Amanda
graduated from Duke Divinity in 2010, was ordained
as an Elder in 2012, and has served as the Campus
Minister and Executive Director of Wesley Campus
Ministry at the University of North Carolina in
Chapel Hill for the past four years. She has a heart
for serving God by serving others. Amanda loves
cooking, traveling, Duke basketball, and her fiancé,
Justin Steinmann. Justin and Amanda will be
married on May 24 at First Broad Street UMC (a
decision they made last August!). Justin will begin
work as a principal planner for the City of Kingsport
Planning Department on May 5. They are looking
forward to becoming a part of the First Broad Street
UMC community as they begin their life together.
Harrison J. Bell
and wife, Chelsea
Harrison is so excited to be returning home to East
Tennessee to serve the community of First Broad Street
UMC. Born and raised in Kingsport and Church Hill,
there is no other place that Harrison would rather be
while serving God. He has served extensively in ministry
throughout the greater Kingsport area for many years, first
as Director of Children’s Ministries at Mountain View
UMC, then as interim pastor of Clouds Bend UMC, and
finally as pastor of Mount Carmel UMC from 2009 until
2012. Upon Harrison’s appointment to Mount Carmel, he
was the youngest licensed United Methodist pastor in the
Holston Conference. He is a graduate of both Northeast
State Community College (A.S.), East Tennessee State
University (B.S.), and is currently finishing a Master of
Divinity at Asbury Theological Seminary.
Harrison’s professional interests reside in the areas of
contextual preaching, strategic implementation, and mentor
development. He loves missions, local and global, and
has worked alongside of First Broad Street on numerous
mission trips throughout the past several years.
Harrison and his wife, Chelsea, are preparing to celebrate
two years of marriage on June 23. Chelsea is also a
graduate of East Tennessee State University and has
a passion for leading people in worship and all things
“crafts.” Together, you will find them cooking, watching
movies, playing board games, and spending time with
family.

about Peter’s declaration, John, Tabitha, and Peter’s time

Vacation Bible School is almost here!!! It will be on

Rotation Sunday School: The children will be learning
about several parables of Jesus in May. The memory verse
for the rotation is: “…there is more happiness in heaven
over one sinner who turns to God than over ninety-nine
good people who don’t need to.” (Luke 15:7) The fact that
Jesus loves us no matter where we go or what we do will be
reinforced.
The Art and Soul Program will be on May 7 at
6:15 p.m. Please come and see a little bit of what the
children have been up to on Wednesday nights this year!
The last Art and Soul until the fall will be on May 14.
Thankful Thursdays coming again this summer! Please
join us (ages Kindergarten-Fifth Grade) on Thursday

Food Ministry Celebration
Cathy Kilgore, coordinator of the Food Ministry here at
First Broad Street, recently purchased over one hundred
cases of cereal from Second Harvest Food Bank. Each case
contained ten boxes of cereal and cost just over two dollars
per case. We celebrate this opportunity to obtain this cereal
to have available for those who come in weekly needing
assistance with food. We thank the congregation for
providing resources to take advantage of this opportunity,
and we encourage you to remember the “Bring One” items
listed weekly in the worship folder, FBS Happenings, and
the monthly newsletter as you shop for your families.

UMW May Meeting
The United Methodist Women will meet on Thursday, May
8, for a General Meeting. Mike and Melanie Harris will
present the program on their involvement with Raceway

Team returns from
Sneedville
The First Broad Street/Mt. Carmel
UMC mission team spent a week
in Sneedville working with Jubilee
Project to repair two mobile homes
and prepare the Rescue Squad
building to house work teams this summer. Led by Bill
Campbell and Cloyd Clipse, the team consisted of adults
and children. Plans are underway to return to Sneedville in
September. Please watch for information in the near future.
Nurturing God’s Children
At 1:15 this afternoon, a Kingsport City School bus
arrived at the Child Care Center, and two precious little
boys hopped off, all excited about their day at the Palmer
Center, and thinking ahead to what will happen this
afternoon in their preschool classroom. Both of these
children have special needs and attend a developmental
preschool class at the Palmer Center during the school
year. They spend their afternoons and summers with us at
the Child Care Center.
We have had this connection with Kingsport City Schools
for many years, and it has been a wonderful partnership.
There seems to be an ever-increasing number of young
children who experience delays in their developmental
progress. Our challenge at the Child Care Center is to help
all children prepare for kindergarten. This process actually
starts when children enter our nursery and continues
throughout the preschool years. Not only is our curriculum
a “stepping stone” from one age group to the next, but it is
a Cokesbury curriculum that introduces children to Christ
at an early age. For some children, this is the only “church”
they get, and we take that responsibility very seriously. We
strive daily to provide social, intellectual, spiritual, and
physical guidance for all children.
Children who have additional challenges are a part of our
daily world at the Center. There are several children with
situations that call for special intervention - extensive
food allergies, Autism, speech and language issues, and
other developmental delays. The teachers at the Child
Care Center do a wonderful job providing the extra
nurturing and enhancement needed to help all children
be as successful as possible. In many cases, outside
professionals visit children in our building to provide
Speech, Occupational, and Physical therapies. These folks
become a part of our “family” and are great additions to
the resource team.
We are so excited to have the opportunity to work with all
children and families! The Child Care Center has been in
operation since the mid 1940’s and has made the difference
to so many children in those years! We look forward to a
rewarding and successful future!

Exciting Summer of Missions
Just Around The Corner
A summer filled with mission opportunities is about to unfold,
beginning with the annual High School Mission Trip to Johns Island,
May 31st through June 7th. Approximately fifty-five youth and forty
adults will travel to Johns Island to join Rural Mission Inc. in housing
rehab and construction, this being the thirty third consecutive year the
youth group from First Broad Street has participated in mission on the
Sea Islands.
The High School group,
“Project Rise”, will travel
to Costa Rica on June 18th
and return on June 25th.
Working with Steve Semlar, a missionary supported by First Broad Street, the
team will be repairing homes and working with a homeless ministry in San
Jose. This team of seventeen includes eleven high school students, two college
leaders, and four adult leaders. Co-leading this mission opportunity with Susie
Pedersen is Micah LaRoche from Wadmalaw Island who has been heavily
involved with our congregation in mission trips, and who also spends a month
each year in Costa Rica, enabling him to be a great resource for the team.
While the team is in Costa Rica, we will host a mission team here in
Kingsport to assist with home repairs in our own community. This will be
an opportunity to partner with the City of Kingsport and local volunteers
in a week of rehabbing homes and joining together in fellowship. The
team, in Kingsport from June 21st to June 28th, will be from Rockville
Presbyterian Church on Wadmalaw Island and St. Johns Parrish on Johns
Island. Both of these congregations
are essential to our Johns Island
Team, Rockville providing a meal and
volunteers and St. Johns housing our
High School team. We are excited to
have them joining us in mission here in
Kingsport.
Before June turns into July, another team from First Broad Street will depart for Estonia,
leaving on June 20th and returning on July 7th. This team of twenty-one adults and one youth will work at Camp Gideon
and also be able to take in the annual Music Festival in Tallin, Estonia. This will be an excellent time to reunite with our
brothers and sisters in Estonia and see the church continue to grow and
flourish in a place oppressed for so long.
Finally, the Middle School youth will return to Saltville, Virginia, July
6th through 11th to work with Project Crossroads in rehabbing homes
in rural Southwest Virginia. The Middle School youth typically install
vinyl siding on a house selected by Project Crossroads, providing a
family with a warm, dry, and attractive home for years to come. The
youth and adults participating enjoy a week filled with learning and
sharing, recreation, and spiritual fellowship.
Please join us in prayer for all of these teams, the opportunities to
transform through their time and service, and the experiences they will
have in their journey. Watch the monthly newsletter, worship folders,
screens, and website for updates and announcements. We want to thank
the congregation as well as all who have invested resources and time in years past for making these opportunities available
to so many. We look forward to sharing the stories of how you have truly transformed the world in the name of Jesus

Welcome Center
as a “runner.”
I asked her to
share a recent
experience with welcoming a guest with Christian
hospitality…and the response she received.
Assisting visitors is so very important to make them
feel welcome. Recently, while I was serving in the
Welcome Center, a visitor who had been coming to
the 8:30 service stopped by the Welcome Center. That
Sunday she brought her granddaughter to participate in
Sunday School. I took her to the children's wing and
let someone there assist her with Checkpoint. Also, I
mentioned the Teammates Sunday School class since
it was close to the children's area. She was interested
but wanted to make sure her granddaughter was
happy. I gave her directions to the class and then met
her when she arrived. Several members welcomed
her, and we provided information on the lesson. She
indicated she enjoyed the class.

to the church…AND where we will treat them to
a Pancake Breakfast…mark your calendar…more

When the Teammates weekly email came out, I
requested that her name be added to the list and also
forwarded the email to her. She responded with the
following: "Thank you, Nancy. I am so happy to
have met such a caring person. Thank you for your
kindness."
This shows how important it is to recognize and
help visitors. She indicated she would be back and
hopefully bring the rest of her family.

10:45 service to transport worshipers from the outlying lots. Thank you so much for following these guidelines.

Growing through GROW Ministries at First Broad Street UMC
Thanks to everyone who came by the GROW Ministries
booth at the Ministry Fair, and a special thank you to those
whose spiritual gifts of teaching, discernment, prayer,
faith, and wisdom are being used in fulfillment of God’s
reign on earth and at First Broad Street UMC. The GROW
Ministries at First Broad Street seeks to
equip the people of God for kingdom living.
Through informational and formational
experiences and opportunities, staff and
servant leaders (aka volunteers, but so
much more) strive to create a Spirit-filled
framework where God’s transformational
work can occur. We seek to cooperate
with God’s Spirit in forming disciples of
Jesus Christ, and equipping all disciples to
continue the work of Christ in the world.
We recognize that children are special
people at FBSUMC. In our Children’s Ministry, we
endeavor to cooperate with parents in bringing up each
child in the love and nurture of God. Early experiences of
church and of loving, faithful adult care-givers and leaders
are very important to a child’s faith development. We want
to support and encourage parents as they provide spiritual
nurture for their children in these formative years.
Youth at First Broad Street continue their faith journey
through Bible study, service and worship, surrounded by
mature and loving adults who urge them onto making
Christ the Lord of their lives and to live faithfully as “salt”
at home, school, church and community. Parents continue
to play a role in their children’s faith development, and we
hope to provide resources to them that
will aid these relationships.
For Adults, young and older, GROW
Ministries assist people to connect
to one another through small groups,
Sunday schools, prayer groups, and
fellowship times. Resources for
continued growth are available, as
well as opportunities to work together,
provide care for one another and lifelong engagement with the Spirit.
At each age there is spiritual “work” that is important
for that age; from an infant learning to trust, to an older
person’s work of legacy and wisdom. GROW Ministries is
a part of the larger church, enabling God’s people to fulfill
the call to discipleship through “Loving God, Growing
Together, Reaching Out.” Thank you to each one who is a
part of this ministry, as leader or as participant. May we be
like strong trees, nurtured by God’s Holy Spirit.

Lost Dog
My friend’s little dog got lost last week. Lucky
somehow walked out the front door while it was ajar
for a few minutes. Trouble is this doggy is old, blind
and deaf. His owners searched all day. They enlisted
friends and neighbors to look for him. After hours,
darkness descended and no dog. My friend sat sadly
in her chair, praying and trying to figure out what to
do when she heard a distant bark. She excitedly called
her husband and he went back out, following the faint
bark. The dog had found his way out into a nearby
horse pasture. His owner gladly picked him up where
Lucky stood by the guardian horse, a little damp but
no worse for the wear.
This small drama touches our hearts because we all
know the sharp pain of losing a precious thing or a
precious pet. In Luke 15, we are reminded of how
God searches for us when we are lost. He goes after
that one sheep, scours the house for the lost coin, and
hails the prodigal by running toward him with open
arms.
The safety of the Lord’s arms beckon to us, but often
we resist. We wander around, blind and deaf in the
dark world, looking for something that satisfies when
the true home that we seek is open to us all along. As
we journey forward as Easter people, let us embrace
the Christ that longs for us. Let us also pray fervently
for those who continue to wander, that they might be
able to accept the sheltering arms offered to them.

“I would like each hat to be in a separate sandwich
size zippy bag with a piece of paper with your first
name on inside the baggy. I will make little cards,
wishing the baby all the blessings of God's love. By
including your name, it will make it more personal
and tangible for the family. I will put my white mesh
basket downstairs (near basement copy machine) to
collect the hats as you complete them. The last time
we did this, Holston Valley told me that they deliver
about 90 babies each month. I hope to be able to take
100 hats over to help these new mothers celebrate
Mother's Day.
Calling all Caring Callers
“What a delightful conversation I had with my Caring Call
recipient today,” one of our callers said to me today. “She
said she really appreciated the call.”
We need more folks who are willing to commit to being
short term Caring Callers: contacting the recipient once
every couple of weeks to see how things are going and
to get a progress report. Sometimes because of mobility
issues or long term treatments, people are unable to attend
congregational worship and miss that frequent contact with
their church family. Caring Callers let them know they
are not forgotten and help to provide a listening ear and a
measure of compassion.
Mini Make Overs
Debbie Mykytka felt a tug on her heart to start a specialhands on ministry to help women apply make-up. She
is doing this as part of Halo Haircuts outreach on their
regularly scheduled days. Debbie’s desire is to help each
woman feel special and to let them know they are beautiful
in God’s eyes. She is accepting donations of unopened
make-up.
Blood Drive
Tony Valk gave blood on a regular basis. In fact, he was a
5 gallon donor. When illness struck, he became a recipient
of this life-giving substance. Now he challenges all of us to
step up and give at our church’s next blood drive. If you are
healthy, weigh more than 110 lbs, are older than 17, then you
can give. Remember, there are lots of people who are unable
to donate because of past medical history, chronic illnesses,
etc. You might be surprised at how few people actually meet
the requirements. So if you can, please give. Giving blood is
a small pain for a lot of gain. Contact Joy Eastridge with ?s.

May Forever Young Fellowship Gathering
The May Forever Young Gathering will be Tuesday, May 20, at 11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The program
will be given by two of our favorite musicians: John Powers and Matthew Brickey. John is the Director of Music
at Kingsley UMC and Matt is Director at West View Baptist Church on Fairview Avenue. John has a very resonant
baritone voice and Matt is a concert pianist. The menu for the day will be sliced roast beef, mashed potatoes
with gravy, green peas, salad, roll, and dessert. The cost is $7.00. Please make your reservation on the church's

Join us for the Church Retreat at Bonclarken with Ed Kilbourne (sponsored by the Prayer Focus Team and Retreat

We will spend the weekend enjoying God’s beautiful creation as we pray, eat, play and create together as disciples and
friends of God and one another. Our retreat leader will be Ed Kilbourne, familiar to many of us through Confirmation
retreats and Jubilation. This gifted individual has the ability to communicate the Gospel across generations and to engage
everyone in a deep faith walk.

Children Add Warmth At Critical Time
The children of First Broad Street recently delivered firewood to a family
in Kingsport and it just happened to coincide with a sudden cold spell
that saw temperatures plummet for w few days. What a blessing it was to
know that this family would be warm, both from the cold and also from
the love and generosity delivered by the children. As a departing prayer
was said by one of the children, thanking God for the ability to get the
wood to the family, tears of joy and celebration began to fall on the soil
where the living Christ was present in so many ways. First Broad Street,
thank you for continuing to support the ministries that bring Christ and
compassion to so many in their time of need, and enable us all to be
disciples of the one who sought to bring comfort to all! May God bless
these children as they continue in their journey of discipleship
and growth!

v (1) 28 oz. box fream of wheat (2 1/2 minute cook time)
v (2) 1 lb. canned hams (or one 2 lb.)
Place sealed 1 gallon bag of food inside a 2 gallon
ziplock bag. v Add 3 packs of wide-rule filler paper, a
compass/protractor set, and a small calculator.
v Include a $5 check (cost of backpack)
These supplies will be placed in backpacks, consolidated
in containers, and shipped overseas to Zimbabwe, Africa.

ISHE Anesu Project. Project leader Maria S. Humbane
visited FBS during this year’s Mission Celebration. Preassembled kits are available at the Wal-Mart Supercenter,
3200 Fort Henry Drive, Kingsport (423-392-0600). They
are kept in the Customer Service Center and cost just
over $20. Please remember to add your $5 check if you

Special Offering on Native American
Ministries Sunday
May 4, 2014
On Sunday, May 4, we will take a special offering for
Native American Ministries, which funds urban ministries
with Native Americans, scholarships for Native Americans
attending United Methodist seminaries, and annual
conference Native American ministries.
