PAGE 2A Saturday, June 8, 2002 Laredo Morning Times Car clubs work to help local children BY JAVIER BARROSO Times staff writer Orphaned Nuevo Laredo children living at the Ministerios De Amor shelter will benefit from a recent donation granted by two Laredo racing car clubs. Members of two local car clubs, Extreme Motor Sports and Street Warriors Racing Team, raised funds to help the children at the home. Ministerios De Amor, a Mexican non-profit organization dedicated to help orphaned children across the nation, will also hold a telethon at McAllen that will be broadcast live by Telemundo on June 16. Oasis of Love Ministries, a non-denominational church in Laredo, works with Ministerios De Amor so people on this side of the border can also help. Luis Fernando Ramirez Pesina, public relations officer for Ministerios, and Carlos Garza, Oasis’ pastor, received a donation of $1,700 from Extreme Motor Club and Street Warriors, two local racing car clubs. Garza said that the clubs’ donation will make a difference for the children at the orphanage. “They had some races the past weekend, and they called us because they wanted to do a fundraiser for the Ministerios De Amor,” he said. Ramirez said officials decided to open a Ministerios De Amor in Nuevo Laredo because there are many homeless children in this region. Children at the shelter receive education, food and clothes, and they stay there all year long. Ramirez said the facility is only accepting boys because there currently is not enough money to build a facility for girls, but acknowledged that it is very DAILY CALENDAR Saturday, June 8 The Kiwanis Summer Festival, sponsored by the Laredo Kiwanis Club, will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Texas A&M International University on the Campus Green. Ramirez said the telethon is yet another effort to raise money for the organization. “The telethon is going to be hosted by Jonny Canales, and all the bands that are going to participate will give a donation for our organization. The funds will be taken to all the Ministerios De Amor across the country,” he said. Garza said there are already many interested in helping the organization, but still want more people and other organizations are needed. “We are trying to get other entities that are already involved in missions to come and see (Ministerios De Amor), and hopefully they will want to get involved with it,” he said. “We would be more than glad to show people what we do in Nuevo Laredo before they get involved.” Garza said a lot of people do not know that donors will be able to deduct their donations from their taxes.
