MARIA TERESA ZERTUCHE CAVAZOS

Beloved mother Maria Teresa Zertuche Cavazos, 75, went to
be with our Lord Jesus Christ
on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at
Methodist Hospital of San Antonio.
Tere, as she was affectionately known, was employed in the
retail industry for many years,
starting at Varden’s, Milton Jewelry, Richter’s and That Added
Touch.
After her retirement, she was
involved in many charitable organizations such as Club Lampacense, which she served as
president. Mrs. Cavazos helped
students in Lampazos, Nuevo
Leon, finish their high school
education. Her dedication and
hard work helped students with
tuition, books and uniforms.
She also selected the top students for scholarships to continue their education at a university. Mrs. Cavazos also
served as president of an organization in Nuevo Laredo for
the blind. She helped with food
and clothes drives and also
helped people with special
needs. She made arrangements
for them to have the necessary
care, such as walkers, canes and
wheelchairs.
Our lives are certainly enriched for having known and
lived with such a wonderful and
caring person. Her life exemplified a deep sense of social justice and compassionate service
to the poor, the oppressed and
the downtrodden. She brought
happiness to all with the beautiful melodies and songs she sang
throughout our lives. We will always remember her with love
and affection.
She was preceded in death

She is survived by her children, Terry (Oscar Jaime) Rodriguez, Mario Gerardo (Lupita) Cavazos and Ernesto
Humberto (Hayde) Cavazos;
grandchildren, Oscar Jaime
(Irene) Rodriguez Jr., Mario Antonio Rodriguez, Gigi Rodriguez, Mario Gerardo Cavazos Jr. and Luis Enrique
Cavazos; great-grandson, Steven
Rodriguez; sister, Graciela Zertuche Gonzalez; brother, Ramon
Zertuche and sister-in-law, Violeta Zertuche whom she loved
as a sister.
Mrs. Cavazos is also survived
by numerous cousins, nieces,
nephews and good friends.
A vigil service will be held
Friday, Jan. 6, 2005, at 7 p.m. in
the Hillside Funeral Home
Chapel. Visitation will be from 4
to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held
Saturday, Jan. 7, 2005, at 9:45
a.m. from Hillside Funeral
Home to St. John Neumann
Catholic Church. Mass will be
celebrated at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow in the
family plot of the Calvary
Catholic Cemetery.

SAMUEL KOWALSKY

Brooklyn, New York
On Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, after
a long illness, Samuel Kowalsky
passed away quietly at home surrounded by his family.
He was born on Oct. 28, 1918, in
Brooklyn, New York, to recent
Russian immigrants Simeon and
Julia Kowalchuk. After graduating
from Boys High School, he completed his BBA in accounting from
City College of New York in 1940.
He began his career with
Arthur Young and Co. before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942.
As a captain, he served as an administrative officer for war material being sent overseas and received his certified public
accounting certificate in 1944.
After being honorably discharged in 1946, he moved to San
Antonio, Texas, where he and
Norman Seeman began a CPA
practice together.
In 1947, he married Claudia
Angelsky in Brooklyn, settling
first in San Antonio and later in
Laredo. He later practiced accounting as a sole practitioner for
many years before being joined
by his son, Sam, daughter, Tanya,
and her spouse, Hank Rose, to
form Kowalsky, Rose & Company.
In 2002, he was honored by
Consuelo Lugo Olivares,
beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother,
was born May 3, 1921. She
passed away in Austin, Texas,
on Jan. 2, 2006.
She will be greatly missed by
her church group, card club and
Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.
She will leave a great void in
her family’s life, but we know she
has gone to a better place to be
with the love of her life, Arturo.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Arturo Olivares; sisters, Elvira Flores,
Theresa Withoff, Ernestina
Rocha and Olga Kettinger;
brothers, Roberto, Porfirio,
Tomas and Jose Angel Lugo.
Mrs. Olivares is survived by
her children, Maricela O.
(Patrick) Spagon, Arabela
(James) Coble, Arturo Rafael
(Carmen) Olivares and Giorgini
(Gene) Olivares.
JOSE I. OROZCO
Jose I. Orozco passed away on
Dec. 26, 2005, in Honolulu,
Hawaii, at the age of 80 years old.
He served in the U.S. Navy
from 1943 to 1946. He later returned to live in Honolulu,
where he spent the last ten years
of his life.
He was preceded in death by
his father, Juan Orozco; mother,
Maria Orozco and his brother
Juan Orozco Jr.
He is survived by his sons
Randy and Anthony Orozco and
Roy, Frank and Rick Ybarra, six
grandchildren; his brother Oscar (Gladys) Orozco and sister
Maria L. (Robert) French.
He will be laid to rest Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the Hawaiian Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii, with
full military honors.

He was happiest when he was
working and counted his clients
as his friends. When not absorbed
in work, he was an avid reader in
addition to having a life long interest in photography. A brilliant
analytical mind, a sharp wit and
a phenomenal memory characterized him.
He was preceded in death by his
wife, Claudia, and his brother, Peter.
He is survived by his children
and their spouses, Elena and Bill
Holloway, Tanya and Hank Rose,
and Samuel M. and Mary Ellen
Kowalsky; his grandchildren,
William Guy Holloway, III, of San
Antonio, Samuel Grayson Holloway,
Allison Julia Rose, David Henry
Rose, and Julia Maeve Kowalsky.
He is also survived by his brothers Steve and wife, Jean, of Poughkeepsie, New York, and Walter and
wife, Yvonne, of Bronx, New York,
brother-in-law, Paul Angelsky and
wife, Olga, of Clark, New Jersey,
and sister-in-law Agnes Kowalsky
of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Visitation will be Saturday,
Jan. 7, 2006, at 10 a.m. at Christ
Church Episcopal, followed by
services at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow in the
Episcopal section of the City
Cemetery. Reverend Paul A. Frey
will officiate at the service.

Nicolas Palacios, 27, passed
away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006.
Mr. Palacios was a down-toearth person who liked to keep
his family together.
He enjoyed working with his
hands with arts and crafts and
as a mechanic.
He will be greatly missed. He
was preceded in death by his
grandfather, Candelario Palacios Sr.; and maternal grandparents, Jose Reyes and Anita
Soto Hernandez.
He is survived by his wife,
Clara Rosales Palacios of Lare-

Alicia Cortinas de Cervantes, 33,

Matias Cervantes Sr., 47, passed
away on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, in
Matehuala, San Luis Potosi.
He was a loving man that cherished his faith in God before anything in his life.
His light of faith transcended as
he became in contact with humankind.
Matias was a loving husband who
adored his wife and children, and
treasured his mother and family
members. He will be greatly missed
by everyone he touched by his love.
Matias was a sales consultant
for Gilco Homes for many years
and also dedicated 25 years of his
life working for H-E-B.
He was a very active member
of the Centro de Alabanza y Adoracion, his church.

ready for Menudo Bowl

Menudo lovers rejoice — the
traditional Menudo Bowl cookoff, sponsored by Laredo Crime
Stoppers, will take place in just a
few weeks.
“I can’t believe this is the 11th
year,” said Carolyn Leyendecker,
Laredo Crime Stoppers executive director, on Thursday during
a press conference to announce
the yearly competition in which
the general public and a panel of
judges select the tastiest bowl of
menudo.
Leyendecker said the goal this
year is to raise at least $25,000
during the event, in which up to
50 cooking teams are expected to
compete on Jan. 21.
The entry fee for teams of five
cooks is $125; teams can also be
sponsored by businesses and organizations.
Independent teams are vying
for a $300 first prize. Secondand third-place prizes are $200
and $100, respectively.
Sponsored teams compete for
a $100 prize in the showmanship category, which can also be
won by the individual teams.
Leyendecker explained that
the funds raised from registration fees and sales will be used to
continue Laredo Crime Stoppers’ operations, which accounted for nearly $13 million in drug
seizures during 2005.
The winners of last year’s
Menudo Bowl, who were present
at the announcement on Thursday, are ready to compete again.
“We are going to try and win
again,” said Juan Morales, who
along with Ana Landeros and
Andres Muñoz, among other
members of their team, took
both first places in the individual
and showmanship categories.
Landeros said this will be the
third time that the team competes in the Menudo Bowl,
adding that their recipe does not
include any secret ingredient to
make it so special.
“Nomás es el sazón (It’s a special touch),” said Muñoz, smiling.
The registration deadline is
Jan. 16 at the Laredo Crime
Stoppers offices, located downtown at the intersection of
Washington and Convent.
