this is a book that will inspire
young readers to walk, discover,

Gandhi: A March to the Sea
Alice B. McGinty
Illustrated by Thomas Gonzalez
4/2/2013
Non-Fiction Picture Book
ALICE B. MCGINTY is the award-winning author of over
forty books for children. Alice loves to hike, play the guitar, dance, and read.
THOMAS GONZALEZ, the oldest of four siblings, was
born in Havana, Cuba, and migrated with his family to
Atlanta, Georgia, in 1970. He has received several advertising and design-related awards, including a gold and
two silver Addys, two Print magazine awards, two Show
South awards, and a bronze International Packaging
Award.
Mohandas Gandhi’s twenty-four-day March to the Sea, from March 12 to April 5, 1930, was a pivotal
moment in India’s quest to become an independent country no longer ruled by Great Britain. With over
seventy marchers, Gandhi walked from his hometown near Ahmedabad to the coast near Dandi. The
march was a nonviolent means to protest the taxes that Great Britain had imposed on salt—not the salt
that the Indians could get from the sea, but the salt that Great Britain forced them to buy. Gandhi
believed that peaceful protests were an effective way to challenge British law, and his peaceful but
ultimately successful movement became known as Satyagraha.

centuries. And she’s next. But that’s not Jae’s only problem.
There’s also Marc. Irresistible and charming, Marc threatens to break the barriers
around Jae’s heart. As the two grow closer, Jae must decide if she can trust him.
But Marc has a secret of his own—one that could help Jae overturn the curse on her

be the home she’s always been looking for.

Ticker
Lisa Mantchev
Penny is like any other sixteen-year-old girl—except she has a
clockwork heart.
She is “the first of the Augmented!” and “the girl with the amazing brass
Ticker!” Her family’s dear friend, the brilliant young surgeon Calvin Warwick,
operated on Penny to save her when her heart gave out—the same way it did
for her two sisters. He engineered her heart with parts produced by the family
business, a renovated Cogs & Rivets factory, that Penny and her twin brother,
Copernicus, help run.
But it turns out that Calvin also experimented on and killed dozens of
Bazalgate’s citizens in order to attain the knowledge necessary to give Penny
her clockwork heart. In the course of a day, the Cogs & Rivets factory is
bombed, Warwick disappears, and the twins receive a ransom note demanding all his surgical notes and medical diagrams if they ever want to see their
parents alive again.
Suddenly, they have three missions: keep Penny’s outmoded Ticker running;
locate Warwick’s notes; and rescue their parents from the kidnappers. It could
be the Ferrum Viriae, the privatized army headed by the intense Marcus
Kingsley, who is developing a mysterious machine dubbed the “Grand Design,” and whom Penny finds enigmatic and extremely attractive. Or it could
be the Edoceon, a violent group of protestors who believe Augmentation
violates all the principles of Man and Nature. Or perhaps it is a darker force,
one that involves their two dead sisters and the chance to lift the veil between
this world and the next. They are running out of time to solve these mysteries,
and no one understands that threat better than a girl with a clockwork heart.

In this affecting memoir, Abbas Kazerooni recounts

the Iranian army. If Abbas doesn’t leave, even at the age of ten,
he will have to go to war. His father insists he leave the country for Istanbul in hopes Abbas can then get to London and
safety. In the strange and often frightening city of Istanbul the
boy grows up quickly: learning to live on his own, navigate a

lives by his wits, surviving because of his inventiveness and
hutzpah.

Eighteen-year-old Riley Middleton should be far away from home, about to start
her freshman year of college on a full-ride scholarship she earned with her

Sparks immediately fly with Romeo, the band’s dark-haired and sexy lead guitar player, who

How do you stay strong when you don’t even
recognize the skin you’re in?
Sixteen-year-old Sep stares into the bathroom mirror on the
first day of school. It’s not some weird lipstick (she never
wears lipstick); she didn’t bump her lips or chew on ice. Her
lips are just—white. In a panic, she digs up an old lipstick and
smears it on her colorless lips. But soon, more and more white
spots begin to bloom, spreading their chalky tendrils across
her olive-brown skin.
Does she have a disease? Is she turning into some kind of
freak? Sep is usually the one who knows all the answers. With
a quicksilver mind and a supple body, she’s happiest when
she’s delving into the mysteries of animal biology or giving
herself over to sweet, hot moves in Jazz Dance Club. Unlike
her best friend, Devon, she’s never been in a rush to get a
boyfriend. But as the white blotches spread, her dating days—
like the endangered species she studies—seem numbered.
So when Josh, a boy she’s always liked, makes a flirty advance,
she wonders: why not grab pleasure while she can? Frank,
funny, and full of passion, this compelling novel tells the empowering story of a strong, gifted teen who, as her life spins

Small town seventeen-year-old Vivienne Taylor is a talented

equestrian with Olympic dreams and a little something extra
going on—she is also an “equine empath,” someone who has the ability to read
horses’ minds and moods.
When she receives a full scholarship to attend Fairmont Riding Academy, a prep school with a
famous riding program, she struggles with homesickness, hazing by the school’s snooty drama
queen, intense competition in the sport of three-day-eventing, and the not-altogether-unwelcome
interest of a hot guy. On top of all of that the horse given to Vivienne via the scholarship is an
animal that she cannot “read” or understand. When Vivienne learns that her new horse Harmony
belonged to the school’s vet, who recently died in a freak accident, she senses that the horse’s
aloof behavior may be the result of her witnessing this accident. But as a connection begins to
unfold between Vivienne and Harmony, Vivienne begins to believe that the vet’s death was no
accident at all—but rather murder—and she resolves, at considerable peril, to track down the
killer.

walling themselves off from her. The horses make her increasingly suspicious of everything from
new student Joel’s actions to her boyfriend’s troubled past. But it’s not until someone incredibly
close to Vivvie goes missing that she realizes she must seek out the truth no matter the risks.

The Keeper
Ellen Jensen Abbott
Abisina is ready to assume the role of Keeper that
has been her destiny, leading the future of the
Watersmeet community.
But the survival of the land depends on the north and
south—the centaurs, dwarves, fairies, humans, and fauns—
joining together to confront a gathering evil. The rift that
opened in the Mountains Eternal has continued to spew forth
terrible creatures: überwolves, leviathan-birds, minotaurs.
Abisina knows that the most challenging creature of all has
arrived—though what shape it will take is still a mystery.
She sets out to bring the folk together to confront this unknown evil, but the land has never been more divided. As she
faces hostile centaurs, ambitious fairies, the destruction of the
only home she’s ever known, and separation from those who
love her, Abisina doubts if she has the strength to be the leader that everyone needs. Even the power of the Keeper’s necklace doesn’t seem to be enough—and when that is taken from
her, she’s left on the brink of hopelessness. Can Abisina’s faith
in the power of love, acceptance, and unity that she’s learned
from her friends and family survive this final test?
