Becoming a Volunteer: Orientation classes for prospective volunteers are held four times a
year. Each session is four hours long and is followed by at least two on-the-job shifts of training
by another volunteer. After a volunteer has completed orientation and training satisfactorily, he
or she works at least one 4-hour shift every week.

Access OC addresses the lack of access to specialty care for the uninsured and low-income
patients in Orange County. The outpatient surgery program utilizes medical volunteers to
provide free out-patient surgeries to local residents in need. Seven Hospitals participate in the
network including Hoag Memorial, Kaiser Permanente, Saddleback Memorial Hospital San
Clemente, Saddleback Memorial Hospital Laguna Hills, Mission Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital of
Orange County, and Saint Jude Medical Center. More than 400 physicians, nurses and other
hospital staff volunteer to provide surgeries for low income patients. Undergraduate students
have the opportunity to volunteer at Access OC. Volunteer positions are limited due to the high
