JON BON JOVI AND SAMSUNG’S FOUR SEASONS OF HOPE TEAM UP TO HELP NORTHERN HOME FOR CHILDREN Northern Home for Children was included this year with three other worthy Philadephia charities as a recipient of Samsung’s Four Seasons of Hope, an innovative year-round national goodwill program benefiting children and families. Samsung teamed up with Jon Bon Jovi, one of the most popular and legendary names in the entertainment industry, to bring some welcome holiday cheer to Northern Home, as well as Philadelphia Children’s Alliance, Corporate Alliance for Drug Education and Philabundance. To kick off this new partnership, Samsung and Jon Bon Jovi made a very special donation of $25,000 to each of these charities. “Samsung’s Four Seasons of Hope has always aligned itself with worldrenown superstars to help children in need, and we are honored to have Jon Bon Jovi, a superstar of both music and of giving, join and benefit our ongoing efforts,” said Peter Weedfald, Sr. Vice President of Strategic Marketing and New Media, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. “As the official music of the Samsung’s Four Season’s of Hope, Jon Bon Jovi will help us raise funds and awareness for the important work being accomplished by all of our umbrella charities.” “I am proud to be joining Samsung’s Four Seasons of Hope, and want to thank Samsung for the funds being donated today to support the critical services being offered by these four Philadelphia-area charities, which include an emergency shelter for kids, drug awareness and prevention, child abuse awareness and prevention, and hunger prevention,” said Jon Bon Jovi. As co-owner of Philadelphia’s new Arena Football League expansion team, the Philadelphia Soul, Jon Bon Jovi has adopted Philadelphia and its people. He chose the four local charities to help enrich the lives of Philadelphia and continue his longstanding tradition of helping in his local community. In addition to the funds donated at today’s event, additional money will be raised in 2004 for each of the charities via Jon Bon Jovi personal appearances as well as a major annual fund-raising event in New York City in June. New Buck Hall Houses Innovative Program The construction is over and children are once again living on the Northern Home campus. The Truancy Respite for Youth (T.R.Y.) program is a project of Northern Home for Children, developed with the support of the Philadelphia Department of Human Services. T.R.Y. is an innovative opportunity designed to meet the needs of the chronically truant child and their families, through an intensive, short-term residential program. The Truancy Respite for Youth program provides intensive assessment, intervention and community linkages for children between the ages of 10 and 17 who are chronically truant. Using a strength-based model, Northern Home employs an array of interventions that will meet the individual needs of the children and their parents. The program is designed to be a short-term intervention of 7-10 days, with the average stay anticipated to be 8 days. The Caroline Alexander Buck Residence Hall, completed last fall, is designed to comfortably, safely and effectively house adolescent residential programs. The children in the program are responsible for making a strong effort, keeping an open mind to opportunities for change, cooperating with the assessments, following basic rules and participating in the program. Parents and caregivers are expected to be active participants in the team and vital members of the aftercare plan. Northern Home for Children is most fortunate to have found a partner in Ingela Carlsson Borgesdotter, a retired IKEA executive who helped establish IKEA in North America. Ingela provided the link between IKEA and Northern Home for Children resulting in IKEA generously donating most of the furniture, bedding and accessories that were used in the new Caroline Alexander Buck Residence Hall. In addition, all of the labor needed to assemble the furniture, hang curtains and picture frames and complete this enormous task was provided by Ingela’s personal friends together with members of the IKEA Conshohocken team of employees. We are most grateful to Ingela and her friends at IKEA for their creative talents and kind generosity. IKEA was founded when Sweden was fast becoming an example of the caring society, where rich and poor alike were well looked after. This is also a theme that fits well with the IKEA vision. On Saturday, June 19, 2004, over 200 children and families served through our Family Services programs will be able to enjoy our open space and participate in a day of outdoor games, races, food, prizes, sports, celebrity and fun – fun – fun!!! Thomas A. Vasoli and James Wyper III, Northern Home trustees, will co-chair this event. Together with a committee of staff and volunteers, the day will include field day events such as relay races, long jump competitions, egg toss and carry and threelegged races. In addition, children will enjoy face painting and arts and crafts as well as a moon walk, sports clinics and a pony ride. Food will be served throughout the day and everyone involved will receive commemorative T-shirts and prizes.
