It is an initiative that has been running for 27 years to help provide Christmas gifts for those children who might otherwise not receive any presents on Christmas morning. After the management opened this year's appeal the choir alternated with the Salvation Army Band to sing four brackets of their favourite Christmas songs. They were then treated to some celebration cake, sweets bags and drinks as a thank you for their wonderful efforts. A number of people passing by congratulated the choir on their performance and their excellent behaviour. They certainly did West Lakes Shore School proud. Well done to you all. Pat Dunlop YEAR 5/6 ZOOSNOOZE On behalf of SD6 we would like to thank everyone who participated in our casual day to raise money for the orangutans. Our final total was $742. A magnificent effort! At the Zoosnooze we handed the cheque to Jodie, who is the S.A. rep of The Orangutan project which raises money to rescue orangutans who are in danger because of deforestation and the illegal pet trade. We had fun on the Zoosnooze and learnt lots about animals. Activities included a bbq dinner, night walk to see the nocturnal animals active, education classes, feeding times for the pelicans, penguins and lions. We made pine cones with stuffed sultanas and drizzled in honey and were also given fruit and veg to hide in lots of tricky places for Akbar the sun bear to find in his enclosure. This was to challenge his gathering skills. SD6 NUDE FOOD DAY 27TH OF NOVEMBER! NEW RECEPTIONS It was wonderful to meet our new reception students for 2015. With a single start date, providing a good transition program for our next group of students has been a challenge. However, we have managed to get all 100 students to school and enjoying their first experiences with very few tears from children or parents. Students are back for their second sessions this week. Many parent/caregivers have taken the opportunity to do the volunteer training and organise their DCSI clearances for working with children as volunteers. Our current reception students made a short video clip to share with the new students and their parents. This proved a big hit and well done to our young movie stars. PUPIL FREE DAY Just a reminder that this week there is a pupil free day on Friday the 21st November. This day gives staff the chance to reflect on the data we have about our students achievements and develop better plans for supporting every child's learning in 2015. You may have read in last week’s Advertiser about schools setting improvement targets and reviewing and sharing them annually. We have set targets for many years and they can be found in our school improvement plan on the website. We report against them on our annual report which is also on the website. REMEMBRANCE DAY We held a special assembly for Remembrance day and were pleased to have Mr Mik Bojko as our guest. Mik works in the school sometimes as a relief teacher and is a Vietnam veteran. Next year is the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign and we are planning some special learning activities in term 1 next year leading up to this commemoration on 25th April. We will give you core information later in the year. PARENT VOLUNTEERS AT SCHOOL A reminder that ALL parent volunteers helping in the canteen, class room, with sport, on excursions, with swimming, camps etc. must have a clearance from the Department of Communities & Social Inclusion. This clearance can take up to 5 months and is valid for 3 years. So it is recommended that if you are intending to be an active helper at our school you contact the front office for the appropriate form. As well as the DCSI clearance, our volunteers are required to attend Volunteer Training every 3 years conducted at school. Please attend our session tomorrow, Thursday 20th November between 9:00 – 10:30am in the staff room. STRETCH CORNER More Lateral Thinking! 1. Trouble with Sons A woman had two sons who were born on the same hour of the same day of the same year. But they were not twins. How could this be so? 2. Push that Car A man pushed his car. He stopped when he reached a hotel at which point he knew he was bankrupt. Why? Simple Sums! Q1: The equation shown below is not correct: 5 + 5 + 5 = 550 ? Can you make the equation correct by placing just one stroke? Hint: Putting a stroke through the equal sign is an inventive solution, but not the one we are looking for! Q2. The equation shown below is not correct: 7+1=5–1 ? Can you make the equation correct by moving just one sign or digit to the other side of the equal sign? Hint: Note that 7-1=5+1 is not a correct solution because then you have moved two signs (exchanged the plus and minus signs.) The antidisestablishmentarianism Challenge So far, one family has managed to make 569 words from one of the biggest words in the English language. Can your family beat this record number? Send in your favourite puzzles for the Christmas edition of the Newsletter Stretch Corner. Email your puzzle ideas to: [email protected] or drop a copy into the front office. Don’t forget to provide the solution! INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Instrumental music tuition for students in year 5, 6 or 7 in 2015. There will be some spaces next year for your child to participate in Brass, Woodwind or Percussion lessons. These lessons are held at school weekly and there is an expectation that if students participate they are committed to attending all sessions and spending time at home to practise. Preference will be given to year 5 and 6 students but will not exclude students in year 7. The number of interested students will depend on whether the instrumental teachers will need to hold auditions this year or not. If your child has the desire and passion to learn an instrument, please respond to me by phone or email by Friday 28th of November. [email protected] BOOK FAIR Thank you to all those people who supported our recent Scholastic Book Fair. CANTEEN – STOP PRESS At the end of the year we will transition from Flexischools to QkR (Quicker) which is the Commonwealth Bank online ordering system. The reasons for this change are significantly lower cost to the school and no transaction cost for families. Additionally, families will no longer be required to have an account with funds in order to order, instead payment is processed from your debit/credit card at time of ordering. Further information will be distributed in the near future. Any families with credit left on Flexischools can request to be reimbursed after the 11th Dec through their account online. No costs will be incurred. Last Day of Term - No lunch orders will be taken on the last day of school Over counter sales will be available at both recess and lunch time. This gives us the opportunity to clear current stock. CONGRATULATIONS Karah S competed in the Under 12 State SAPSASA Softball competition in Toowoomba from the 9th - 14th November 2014. This means that there will be no problem with extra family members obtaining a seat to view this exciting event. WHOOPING COUGH We have had confirmed cases of ’Whooping Cough’ reported at the school. This is a bacterial infection of the nose and throat. The illness often begins with cold like symptoms of runny nose, sore watery red eyes, low grade fever and general unwellness. After three to seven days, a dry cough develops. The cough is usually present for many weeks and may last for months. The person is highly infectious when the ‘cold-like’ symptoms occur in the early stages. Without treatment, a person is infectious for the first 3 weeks of coughing. With appropriate antibiotic therapy, the person is no longer infectious to others 5 days after starting antibiotics. A student with Whooping Cough should not attend school until 5 days after starting antibiotic treatment, or if not treated, they should be excluded from school for 21 days from the start of symptoms. If your child is showing any of these symptoms, we recommend that you visit with your Doctor and make them aware that there have been cases of Whooping Cough at our school. Please be aware that although you may have been immunised for Whooping Cough the effectiveness of the immunization decreases over time and boosters are advised. Tuesday December 2nd 2014 CHRISTMAS ALL AROUND THE WORLD CONCERT WEST LAKES SHORE SCHOOL INSIGHTS Building parent-school partnerships WORDS Malcolm Dix Oh, so serious! When Malcolm Dix found himself taking life too quickly and too seriously, he decided to take a dose of his own medicine. Everywhere I go I hear from parents that they are too busy, too stressed, and have too much to do and not enough time. Many social observers say parents seeing themselves as ‘time poor’ is at epidemic levels, a belief that is only compounded by technology that enables us to be connected 24/7. At one point I personally had to take some time to stop and honestly reflect upon my own life and that of my family. It didn’t take long for me to see that I too had become caught up in the ‘busyness’ of life. I knew that for the sake of my kids and my family, I had to make a change but it requires a day-in day-out conscious level of commitment – a commitment to practise joy, fun, patience, forgiveness, silliness, bad dancing and reflection. Currently I’m doing seven things to calm my life down and that of my family while trying to create more space for my children to simply enjoy their childhood. (Some of the following I’m sure you already do but it’s taken me a while to figure them out). My strategies to slow down and not be so busy are as follows: 1 Eat together as a family at the table at least four nights a week There has been more and more written about the importance of families eating together and the positive effect it has on children and adults alike. I have to say I’m enjoying it. 2 Avoid watching the nightly news 5 Exercise together I’ve stopped watching the news and to my surprise the sky never collapsed as I had feared. I’m a much happier man not watching the oh-so-depressing’ news. I exercise with my kids at least four times a week, usually at the local park kicking the footy, throwing a frisbee, running with our dog and so on. I have realised that the best way to get them all moving is by moving myself too. 3 Turn off the TV and sit around an open fire I’ve constructed a simple fire pit in our innercity backyard and every second weekend my partner, the kids and I toast marshmallows, listen to funny songs, talk and look up at the stars. Who needs to go camping to enjoy the outdoors! My eldest boy (13 years old) is also learning to set a fire and his younger brothers are learning a lot about flames, hot coals and what happens to marshmallows when they are left in the fire for too long. Meanwhile my 16-year-old daughter will stare at the flames for an hour thinking about who knows what … but for me this is better than seeing her staring at social media or watching mindless television. 4 Dance together I’ve made the conscious decision to start dancing in the kitchen with my kids at least three times a week. I can’t dance to save myself, however I have three boys and if they are ever going to learn to dance and be comfortable with moving their bodies, I suddenly realized I have to lead the way. This parenting caper sure can be humiliating at times, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. 6 Explore nature together I’ve started spending more time in nature with my kids by taking them to the river, the hills, lakes, nature parks. I keep it local, with the occasional longer drive on weekends. I contacted my local council and found so many fun things to do as a family in my local area that I never knew existed … who would have thunk it! 7 Limit your own social networking I have severely reduced my time spent on social media such as Facebook, Twitter etc. My personality type could disappear into social media and never come back so I knew I had to significantly change my ways and, once again, it’s all about positive role modelling for my kids. So there you have it, my strategies for simplifying and calming my family life. As a result I’m happier, less stressed and far more ‘present’ for everyone which, in turn, is having a positive effect on my kids. Malcolm Dix e from Michael Grose.
