INTRODUCING
SAN DIEGO’S
Snigdha Nandipati
Champion
2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee
For Snighda, the road to winning the
national spelling bee was paved with hard
work, determination – and a lot of strange
words. The then-eighth grader studied
for 20 hours a week, using 30,000-plus
flash cards and a software program her
father developed. Her strategy included
researching the history and etymology of
words and analyzing those with irregular
constructs. It paid off when Snigdha won
by spelling guetapens (ambush or trap).
This year, the 15-year-old will participate
in a neuroscience competition called the
Brain Bee. She hopes to parlay her love for
science into a medical career.

“You don’t get to
choose how you’re
going to die. Or when.
You can only decide
how you’re going to
live. Now.”
— Joan Baez
Kathryn Ashworth
Joye Blount
Co-founder, Voices for Children
Wealth Management Advisor, US Bank
Kathryn’s life revolves around
assisting local youth. In 1980, she
helped start – and later served as
president of – Voices for Children, a
nonprofit that aids foster care clients
in need of loving “forever families.”
The former Girl Scout currently
volunteers as a Voices for Children
Court-Appointed Special Advocate
(CASA) and membership chair for
Kids’ Turn. Kathryn also serves on
the City of San Diego Civil Service
Commission. She was a founding
partner of Ashworth, Blanchet,
Christensen and Kalemkiarian,
where she specialized in family and
juvenile law.
Joye has extensive experience in
finance. Her community contributions
include raising $1 million for the
San Diego Zoo; launching the
local Bank of America Foundation;
and volunteering for Point Loma
Nazarene University, Voices for
Children, the United Way Women’s
Leadership Council and Balboa Park
Conservancy Board. She also served
as a United Nations official observer
for two Mexican presidential elections
and is a graduate of the FBI Citizen’s
Academy. Joye’s many honors include

The “first lady of wireless” pioneered
her industry, becoming the only
woman ever inducted into the Wireless
Hall of Fame. Arlene’s innovations
helped make cellular service available
to people of all levels of income and
technical proficiency. The former
Girl Scout’s inventions include the
Jitterbug phone for seniors (one of
The New York Times’ “10 Brilliant
Ideas of 2006”), the world’s first
airline ticketing data base, and the
first prepaid phone and wireless
activation systems. Currently, she
develops innovative businesses at
Dyna, LLC.

Dolores, a former Girl Scout who
champions the rights of laborers,
women and youth, made history while
co-leading a grape boycott with
Cesar Chavez. Ms. named her one
of America’s three most important
women of 1997. When President
Clinton established the Eleanor
Roosevelt Human Rights Award
in 1998, Dolores was a recipient.
The civil rights icon earned the
Presidential Medal of Freedom
and was inducted into the U.S.
Department of Labor Hall of Honor in
2012, and the California Hall of Fame
in 2013.
Creator of the San Diego Asian
Film Festival, Lee Ann heads an
organization that provides programs
such as Drive By Cinema and Reel
Voices, and collaborates with
schools to educate youth about film
production, ethnic studies, history
and social advocacy. Previously an
Emmy-winning anchor/reporter for
KGTV, Lee Ann now volunteers for
the San Diego Symphony, Chinese
Historical Museum, and Barnard
Elementary School. The former Girl
Scout has been honored by the San
Diego Film Critics Association, KPBS
Whether mentoring a Latina teen,
helping to build a medical facility
in Mexico, or using her legal skills
to assist families with immigration
matters, Rosy is dedicated to
changing lives. She donates her time
and talents at the Legal Aid Society
and USD’s Immigration Justice and
Law Society. She has also volunteered
for Big Brothers and Sisters, Interfaith
Shelter Network, the Holy Family
Church, San Diego Organizing Project,
and the United Church of Christ Mayan
Ministry.
In her new position as superintendent
of the state’s second-largest school
district, Cindy is striving to make the
world a better place. The former Girl
Scout San Diego Gold Awardee says,
“I learned all my leadership skills
as a Camp Winacka counselor.” Her
25-year-career includes stints as an
elementary school teacher and as
a literacy specialist. Most recently,
Cindy served as principal of Central
Elementary in City Heights, where she
transformed an under-performing
school into a model for other lowincome neighborhoods.
Zandra has dressed royalty and
international stars, including Princess
Diana, Jacqueline Onassis and Joan
Rivers. Her dramatic flair for bold
prints, feminine patterns, theatrical
color – and revolutionary use of
printed textiles in garments – helped
put London on the fashion forefront
in the 1970s. Founder of the Fashion
and Textile Museum in London, Zandra
recently launched a brand licensing
program incorporating her inimitable
style and genius. The former Girl Guide
and Brownie also designs opera sets
and costumes, including San Diego
Opera’s Aida.
A former Brownie and longtime
Girl Scout volunteer with a passion
for helping others, Ellen dedicates
her time and talents to organizations
such as the Jewish Community
Foundation and UCSD’s Planned
Giving Executive Committee. Named
by Best Lawyers of America as
San Diego’s 2012 “Trust and Estates
Lawyer of the Year,” Ellen has also
been recognized by San Diego Super
Lawyers, the Daily Transcript, Los
Angeles Times, the Salvation Army,
the YMCA and the San Diego Museum
of Art, where she serves on the board.
