The then-eighth grader studied for 20 hours a week, using 30,000-plus flash cards and a software program her father developed. Her strategy included researching the history and etymology of words and analyzing those with irregular constructs. It paid off when Snigdha won by spelling guetapens (ambush or trap). This year, the 15-year-old will participate in a neuroscience competition called the Brain Bee. She hopes to parlay her love for science into a medical career.
