Deltona High School For the parents, students, & community supporters of Deltona High School. Volume 20 Issue 2 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents and Guardians, We have had a fantastic start with all of our students, teachers and support staff boarding the “Energy Bus” for “Destination Success!” Our annual Open House was a success with many parents and guardians taking the opportunity to come out and visit their student’s classrooms and meet their teachers. Our School Advisory Committee and PTSA have met and we are very appreciative to those parents and staff for their support and input. Our thanks are extended once again to Mrs. Carolyn Carbonell and LTC Moore-Lobban for Co-Chairing the SAC committee and to Ms. Heather McKechnie for chairing PTSA. It’s not too late for parents to get involved with SAC or PTSA. Our PTSA meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. and SAC meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Both meetings are held in the Media Center. Parents, it’s not too late to get involved, WE NEED YOU!!! You will continue to hear us say throughout the year that our main focus continues to be student achievement. Many teachers have established tutorial “success sessions” which are held before school, during lunch, and/or after school as a means of additional support for our students. Students should check with their teachers for time and location of their success sessions. In addition, students will receive “Intervention” in every class each Wednesday. Intervention Wednesdays are designated as time teachers will have to re-teach important concepts and/or skills, work with groups or students individually, complete diagnostic testing, or conference with students. I highly recommend that all parents take advantage of the Pinnacle Grade book program which is available for parents and students to track academic progress and daily attendance. It also provides email capability to communicate directly with teachers. Log-on information was disseminated to students to access the Pinnacle program. If you have not received this information, please contact our Guidance department. We are more than happy to provide access to a computer on campus for parents that do not have computers. I am thrilled to announce that Ms. Alicia Kellett has been selected as Deltona High School’s “Teacher of the Year.” Ms. Kellett is a graduate of Deltona High School and has been on the staff here since 1998. An outstanding educator and role model, Ms. Kellett serves as the Director of our award winning Health Academy. She will attend a formal event later in the school year where she will be recognized along with all other school’s Teacher of the Year nominees. For the third year in a row, Deltona High School has received the Five Star School recognition. A very important component in meeting the Five Star criteria is parent and community involvement, so THANK YOU for helping us to achieve this prestigious recognition. Parents, please continue to help us with safety and security by dropping students off in the parent drop off loop only. The parent drop off loop is located off of Wolf Pack Run. Dropping students off on the street outside of the school has caused traffic back-ups and poses a potential safety hazard to our students. Please remember also that the student parking lot is not a drop off area for students. We appreciate your cooperation. Please come out and support our students by attending athletic events and extracurricular activities. For more information regarding our extra-curricular activities, programs, and special events, visit us on the web at www.myvolusiaschools.org (click on schools and then on Deltona High School). With warm regards, Susan H. Freeman Principal GO WOLVES! Applications can be picked up in Ms. Tkac’s office BEFORE SCHOOL, AFTER SCHOOL, DURING LUNCH, or by making an APPOINTMENT. DO NOT stop for applications between classes. The following are pointers to keep in mind when filling out scholarship applications: • Give yourself enough time to do a good job on the application...don’t wait until the day before an application is due to begin working on it. • Allow teachers, counselors, etc. at least 2 weeks to prepare a good letter of recommendation. • If the application requires a transcript, place your request at the front desk in “F” building. Give at least 2 weeks notice otherwise you may not have the transcript in time. • Above all, TYPE your application. Never use pencil or colored inks. If you cannot type the application then print neatly using black ink. YOU NEVER HAVE A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION! DELTONA HIGH SCHOOL 6 PARKING LOT REGULATIONS The privilege of parking on campus is reserved for those who abide by school rules and procedures. Consequently, noncompliance with rules and procedures may result in having your parking privileges suspended or revoked. • All cars parked on the school grounds must have a visible Deltona High School parking permit for the current year, available for purchase in the Dean’s Office. Please place all parking permits on rear view mirror. Student must present a valid driver’s license, current registration, and proof of insurance in order to obtain a parking permit. • Parking permits will be confiscated if found in another student’s car and will result in disciplinary consequences. • Students must park in designated student parking only. You must park in a legal parking spot. Do not park on grass, hills, curbs, etc. If you park illegally, a parking violation will be issued and left on your car. The 2nd offense will result in the loss of parking privileges. After parking your vehicle make sure you lock your door then proceed to building sites immediately. No loitering in the parking lot. Sitting in cars in the parking lot is not permitted at any time. Under no circumstances are students allowed to park in the faculty/visitor parking lot parallel to Wolf Pack Run. Failure to follow student parking lot policies and procedures will result in disciplinary consequences. • Students participating in extracurricular or athletic events must leave their vehicles parked in the student parking lot. DO NOT move it around to the faculty or gym area parking lots. • Reckless driving will not be tolerated on school grounds (speed limit is 5 mph). The driver and any front passengers must wear seat belts when a vehicle is in gear. • Students are not permitted in the parking lot during school hours unless they have a valid pass from the Dean’s Office or an Administrator. Leaving school materials and/or textbooks in the car is not a reason for going to the parking lot during school hours. • Students arriving tardy will report directly to the cafeteria. The student parking lot is locked at 10:00 PM nightly when there are evening activities, and reopened at 6:00 AM. Students being picked up after school or dropped off in the morning must use parent pick up, not the student parking lot. Deltona High is not responsible for safety, security, or contents of your vehicle, even though the parking area is monitored. PARKING PERMITS Parking Permits are required to park on campus. Parking on campus is reserved for juniors and seniors who abide by school rules and procedures. All students who wish to drive to school must purchase a $30.00 parking permit. Students must provide the school with a copy of their driver’s license, insurance card, and vehicle registration to purchase the permit. Any student with an obligation will be unable to purchase a parking permit. Once a student’s obligation is paid in full he/she may purchase a permit. All vehicles must be registered and decals/permits placed on rear view mirror to have the privilege of parking in the student parking lot. There will be no movement allowed on campus. All gates will be closed and locked until an “all clear” is given. Visitors will not be allowed to enter or leave. Our security team will monitor the situation continuously. Parents will be notified via Connect Ed or via our district media contact should the situation warrant. Evacuation If there is need to evacuate our campus, transportation will be contacted and ALL students and staff will be transported by bus over to Galaxy Middle School, including students who drive on to campus. If an additional evacuation site is needed, we will also transport over to Pine Ridge High School. Students will be released to a parent/guardian only from one of these designated locations…Please do not come to the Deltona High campus to pick up your student. Parents will be notified via the media and Connect Ed if an evacuation is warranted. Once the situation has been resolved, students and staff will be allowed to come back to the campus to retrieve their vehicles. Parents, it is vitally important that we have accurate contact information in the event we need to notify you of an emergency or if your student is ill. If you are not receiving regular Connect Ed messages from us, there is a good chance that we do not have your most recent contact information on file. Please contact us immediately to update your student’s information so that we can effectively communicate with you. ATTENDANCE Absences If you are absent from school, phone calls (or written excuses if there is no phone) from the parent/guardian to the Attendance Office (ext. 44091) are required the same day of the absence. The information should include the student’s name, alpha code, the date of and reason for the absence, the parent’s/guardian’s name and telephone number. When a student has missed 15 or more excused/unexcused days of school, further absences cannot be excused without a doctor’s note. Absences should be for the following reasons: Student illness, family emergency, death in family, medical appointments and religious holidays. Note: The Florida Legislature has enacted requirements that schools report to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) the names of students who fail to satisfy the attendance requirements. This refers to students who accumulate 15 unexcused absences (excludes out-of school suspension) within 90 calendar days. Students who fail to satisfy attendance requirements will be INELIGIBLE for driving privileges. BULLYING To many adults, teasing and taunting among children and teenagers is a natural and inevitable part of growing up. Experts say such behavior is anything but normal and should be taken seriously by parents, teachers and school administrators. Signs of being a bully: • Aggressive, spiteful, oppositional & manipulative behavior. • Enjoys insulting, teasing & fighting with others. • Using physical means to express anger. • Bruises, cuts or other injuries. • Damaged clothing or lost possessions without explanation. • Drop in grades. • Choice of unusual route to go to school. Tips for parents: • Seek help of school’s counselor or social worker. • Avoid using physical methods to punish children for bullying. • Be a good role model. EARLY CHECK-OUT Parents requesting early check-out of their student can complete a pre-arranged check-out pass (located in the front office) and return it to the Attendance Office a few days before scheduled appointment. This alleviates any wait time for you when you come to pick up your student. If you call or come in, please understand that we do need some time to get your student for you. Please allow at least 30 minutes. This will allow the school the opportunity to look up the student’s schedule and send for them to meet you at the Attendance Office. Parents, it is important that we check the driver’s license of anyone picking up your student early from school. This will be done to ensure the safety and well-being of your child.
