Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
NOVEMBER 23, 2014
From the Pastor’s Desk:
November 23, 2014
Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe is the culmination of the Church’s entire
liturgical year. Today we celebrate Christ who is truly King and Lord of the universe and now reigns in all
His glory in Heaven.
Today’s feast was instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, at the request of many bishops and faithful from
around the world. There was a strong denial of faith influenced by the rise of materialistic secularism and
militant atheism that was trying to repress belief in Christ and suppress Christian presence in the world.
Bolshevik communism began to show its evil head, as they tried to perfect the art of lying, with its manifesto
to claim to be working to “free” people from the “opium” of belief in God, which they said was only a
means used by others to keep them subjected. Since there really was no god, they stated, the churches and
Christians were just seeking greater foundation for their pursuit of political power. As a consequence of
such situations during a time when respect for Christ and His Church was waning, people were more and
more attracted to materialistic and secular solutions to the world's problems that, in many cases, led to
less-than- Christian and less-than-human solutions: World War I, Communism, the embellishment of Hitler.
The Church, to counteract these lies and proclaim both the fact of Christ’s Kingship in the Universe and the
true spiritual aims of that Kingdom, proclaimed today’s feast.
Pope Pius XI hoped that the institution of the feast would teach and help the world to understand:
1. That nations would see that the Church has the right to freedom, and immunity from the state.
2. That leaders and nations would see that they are bound to give respect to Christ and to His way of life.
3. That the faithful would gain strength and courage from the celebration of the feast, by being reminded
that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies.
4. Christ the King reminds us that if we want a world that is prosperous and at peace, then Jesus in His
Church must have the freedom to teach and live as Christ would have us live… with His peace, joy, love,
and forgiveness.
Almost 90 years later, there continues to be an increased need to proclaim the Kingship of Jesus Christ as
we today witness so many civil governments viewing Christ and His message as a threat rather than their
salvation. Looking back at the history of our own country when we recognized the importance of faith, of
religion, of the Church, our nation was prosperous and at peace. But as we have embraced a secular and
materialistic way of life, we have experienced a reality of anger, economic despair, war and social unrest.
Thomas Jefferson warned us about removing Jesus as our King and the center of our lives when he said: "I
tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just - that His justice cannot sleep forever." President
Ronald Reagan reminded us that "George Washington believed that religion, morality, and brotherhood
were the pillars of society.” He said you couldn't have morality without religion. And yet today we're told
that to protect the first amendment, we must expel God, the source of all knowledge, from our children's
classrooms, from sport fields, even from the English language.
Who is Jesus, the King of the Universe, for you? This time for us Catholics is the time to make our faithful
“New Year’s” resolution, so the next year will be a year of deeper faith and greater witness to Jesus our
King. I would strongly encourage you to take a moment and to consecrate your life to the Sacred Heart of
Jesus, our King. May Jesus be the source and center of our lives. May He strengthen each one of us to grow
in holiness and commitment to make Him the King of our lives.
With prayers,
Fr. Andy
Giving Tree
This is the most wonderful time of year. A season steeped in traditions with
family and loved ones near. A time we especially feel moved to open our
hearts and hands to help those in need.
The Giving Trees allows us to see the need of those less fortunate in our area
and gives us the opportunity to fill that innate desire to serve others.
As always, the trees will contain the names of children in our community
that we would like to provide necessary clothing and a special gift for. If you
are able to help, please choose a tag, sign the book next to the trees and
return the gift with the tag attached no later then Wednesday, December
10th. We ask that you will please place your gift under the tree in Rooney
Hall. It is VERY important that you return your gift by this date so others do
not have to shop last minute for your chosen child’s gift
We will also continue to collect food donations/ grocery gift cards for
Christmas food bags and our Food Distribution that will be held Saturday,
December 13th. We have well over 100 families now that attend the monthly
food distributions and expect many more for the month of December; we ask
that you be as generous as you can. Please see food list for items requested. If
you have any questions at all please feel free to contact me, Rhonda Biroschik,
at 291-2123.
As always Parish Outreach sincerely thanks you for your continued support
and generosity and pray that God will bless you and your family during the
Christmas season and through out the New Year.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ACTIVE
PARISHIONER AT ST. LUKE?
To be an Active Parishioner, parishioners must be
registered in the parish for a sufficient period, and
actively contribute to the life of the parish in the following
ways:
Sharing of your Time - attend Sunday Mass and
Holy Days of Obligation faithfully, pray and be kind.
Share generously your time by volunteering within the
different ministries of the Parish.
Sharing of your Talent - honor God everyday as
you use your talents. Be generous in offering at least one of
the many talents you’ve received from God, and actively
volunteer in one or more of the many ministries within St.
Luke Parish.
Sharing of your Treasure - in financial support of
the parish by use of the envelope system, that provides a
record of Mass attendance. An ‘active parishioner’ is
expected to share with St. Luke Parish a portion of his/her
treasure.
Jesus is inviting you to spend a special hour with Him in
humble Adoration in the quiet of our Chapel each
Monday between the hours of 9:00am and 6:30pm.
Participants sign up for one hour vigils to pray before the
very presence of our Lord exposed in the monstrance. It’s
up to each participant how they wish to spend that time
with Jesus. They can pray the Rosary, read the Bible or
other spiritual readings or offer prayers of faith, hope,
charity, thanksgiving or reparation. Even those who
simply sit and let their minds wander for an hour will tell
you how they are left with a sense of peace.
Tremendous graces and blessings come from time spent
in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Please do some
serious reflection about this special gift that Jesus gave to
us and be generous with your time in coming to meet Him
in adoration where you can get a taste and feel of His
tender unconditional love.
Everyone is always welcomed and encouraged to spend
time at adoration each Monday. If you feel called to
commit to an hour time slot each week, please contact
Leigh Clark at 591-1473 (cell).
BLANKET MINISTRY
We understand some families have special circumstances
that would prevent them from fulfilling one or more of
these guidelines. Special exceptions can be made on a case
by case basis.
Please come into the office and register to be an ‘active
parishioner’ - a member of our St. Luke family.
We look forward to welcoming you.
The Blanket Ministry is now resuming
their monthly meeting. We meet once a
month on the 2nd Thursday at 12pm.
Please come and see what we are all about!

Thanksgiving Day Prayer
Our loving God, Giver of all good gifts and the
source of every blessing we have, we kindly ask to
hear our prayer. With grateful hearts we praise you
and give you thanks for the grace of our lives, for the
gift of our faith, for the call to discipleship. We
are grateful for the bond of family and friends of
our parish community that is nourished and
strengthened by the Eucharistic meal we share, and
by the warmth of your love that comes to us each day
through your benevolent mercy. Help us to use
wisely all the gracious gifts you have showered upon
us for the benefit of ourselves, our family, our
community and our nation. On this Thanksgiving
Day may we acknowledge that every good thing
comes to us from you, and may your bounty never
cease, so that we may share your blessings with
those in need. Amen.
With grateful hearts the St Luke parish staff extends
our prayerful wishes and support to the entire parish
community.

Ignatius of Loyola. Fr. Gallagher explains how St. Ignatius and others converted their lives from ones of emptiness and
sin leading away from God to lives rich in the fullness of God’s grace. In ten episodes Fr. Gallagher shows how we can
apply Ignatius’ 14 rules to our daily lives helping us to draw closer to the Father.
Meetings take place @ 7pm in the Hope Room every other Monday beginning on Dec. 1st.
All who are interested can come to a meeting or may contact the Adult Faith Office.
SPIRITUAL GROWTH CORNER - Mass
The Mass reveals God’s vision for us as individuals, his vision for marriage and family, for community and
society, and for the Church and the world.
There is genius and beauty in the prayers of the Mass, and yet, most people tune out the prayers. It seems to me
that keeping God’s dream for us to become the-best version-of-ourselves in the forefront of our mind unlocks the
language of the many prayers that make up the Mass.
The prayers of the Mass remind us that we are called to be responsible stewards of our own lives while at the
same time living in a way that is mindful of the needs of others and mindful of the needs of all of creation. Over
and over again, the prayers of the Mass orient us toward God and remind us of his desire to have a relationship
with us.

In today’s readings we see that Jesus is the Good
Shepherd who will care for us in our time of need.
However, our relationship with Jesus should not be all
take and no give. We, in turn, are expected to care for

One act of thanksgiving, when things go
wrong with us, is worth a thousand thanks
when things are agreeable to our inclinations.

SACRAMENTAL MINISTRY
Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion
As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of
the Mass when we receive Holy Communion, the true
Body and Blood of our Lord. Yet, we Catholics should receive Holy
Communion only when we are living in communion with the
Catholic Church and in the state of sanctifying grace and have made
the appropriate fast from food and drink.
Because of the connection we draw between being in full
communion with the Catholic Church and receiving Holy
Communion, we cannot invite those who are not Catholic to share in
Holy Communion with us. Still, we welcome all to this celebration
of the Mass as our brothers and sisters, and pray that our common
baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit will one day draw us closer
“..that all may be one.” (John 17:22).

RCIA - How Does One Become Catholic? God moves in
our hearts in a variety of ways, and brings many people to a
desire to learn more about the Catholic Church and its lived
faith and practices. This desire will lead many of you to enter into the process
known as Rite of Christian Initiation. This journey will take place with others
who share similar stirrings of the Spirit, and will be lead by Catholics who are
grounded and knowledgeable about their faith and who are called by God to
share this with you and walk with you on this journey of inquiry. Some of you
will respond to an even deeper desire to become full and active participants,
members of the Catholic Church and your journey will continue to include the
sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. For these people, the
sacraments of initiation usually take place at Easter or at a time that the
readiness of these people is determined. The church encourages an ongoing
conversion to Jesus Christ and the reign of God He proclaimed. The church
wants to share its life with new members and offer them support and
encouragement.
