Year in Review Claremont Educational Foundation Promoting Art, Music, Technology and Educational Innovation in Our Schools A Message from the President Dear Friends of CEF, Richard Chute CEF President Most of the evidence of the Claremont Educational Foundation’s impact is visible at the level of the school site—art and music classes being taught in our elementary schools, technology projects at every school, special innovative projects by teachers, and the increasingly popular SLICE of Summer programs at El Roble Intermediate School and the High School. CEF continues to perform an important role in funding programs that take place at each school, and we remain very proud that the programs we support provide universal access across all of the schools while representing district priorities. Without CEF’s continued support, key curricular goals important to all of our students, such as instruction in the arts, would not have been achieved. A key aspect of our support is providing additional value and resources to a community filled with inspired teachers, committed administrators, involved parents, and enthusiastic students. CEF’s programs are not just about “saving our schools,” or the district. They are about demonstrating the value of public education in our community as a whole. CEF’s vision is to ensure that all of our students are prepared for life—whether that includes college and graduate school, community college, trade school, military service, or a first job or being a great parent and citizen. Our community is strong, in part, because we work so hard to instill knowledge and values in our children so that our future will be bright or brighter than our present or our past. For education to thrive in our community, we need everyone to care. You can demonstrate your commitment by being a loyal donor. To those of you who are already contributing, thank you. But you can also demonstrate your commitment to education in other ways. If you like to have fun, attend one of our wonderful events. If you are parent or grandparent, be involved with your students at home, or consider taking advantage of our SLICE of Summer program next year. If you are an interested community member, attend one of our monthly community lectures on education-related topics. If you are a business person, consider making a gift, helping to sponsor an event, or participating in our eGood program. And if you are feeling lucky, you can help by buying a Prius raffle ticket! However you choose to be involved, we welcome your support. With heartfelt thanks to everyone in our community, Richard Chute, President SLICE of Summer > Record Breaking Year! The Claremont Educational Foundation’s 11th SLICE of Summer program had a record-breaking year! SLICE continues to grow in the number and variety of classes offered and students enrolled. More than 1,000 students participated in over 100 classes such as: >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> 2-D Design with Escher Basketball and Volleyball Beginning Spanish Clay Play Common Core Writing with a SLICE of Creativity Critical Thinking through Strategic Board Games CSI: Claremont Film Making Law School for Kids Master Your Math Facts Musical Theater Poisonous and Venomous Animals Sew Fabulous! Speech & Debate Ultimate Fort Building The SLICE of Summer program is addressing a need in Claremont by providing courses specifically designed to support enrichment, remediation, and advancement. SLICE continues to serve the community by offering scholarships valued at over $70,000—no one is turned away from taking a class with SLICE. Scholarships are made possible, in part, by a generous $10,000 donation from Metro Honda/Acura of Montclair. CEF Making an Impact Monetary gifts made to the Claremont Educational Foundation go directly to enriching and sustaining quality public education for students attending the Claremont Unified School District. Past gifts have focused on providing art and music instruction at the elementary schools and technological projects at all schools in the district. CEF works collaboratively with the school district to ensure that our gifts have a direct and lasting impact on the students that we serve. For the 2013–2014 academic year, CEF gifted $201,000 to the district. Funds paid for art and music programs in grades K-6, and also provided technology improvements to include the purchase of new laptops, i-Pads and printers at campuses across the district. In addition to the CEF money donated directly to the school sites, CEF granted individual teachers and principals $10,000 in innovation grants focused on specialized projects. Investing in Innovation > Innovation Mini-Grants CEF believes in supporting CUSD’s top-notch educational staff and nurturing a space where innovative ideas can develop and flourish. In the spring of 2014, CEF announced a small grant pilot program to fund creative projects that engage students in high-impact learning opportunities. Teachers and principals in CUSD were invited to apply. The focus of the grants is innovation; it is an opportunity for teachers with creative initiatives to take risks in the classroom and experiment with promising new ideas. The grant projects ideally align with CEF’s traditional areas of focus (art, music and technology), and may also explore other subject areas (humanities, sciences, etc). Teachers had the opportunity to apply individually, or in groups for a collaborative school-site or grade-level project. Principals were also encouraged to submit a proposal for a school-wide project. Spring 2014 CEF Funded Innovation Mini-Grant Projects Claremont High School > Community Garden This project transformed an underutilized school garden into a larger, community garden available to student groups, classrooms, clubs and individuals for use in teaching and learning as well as developing an overall sense of community around the natural world. Students who help with the garden get to go home with fresh produce, and the garden promises to be an important center of student engagement, community and learning in CUSD. Claremont High School > GIS Data Analysis In a unique partnership with Claremont Graduate University, CHS students had the opportunity to learn a powerful geographic mapping software program (GIS) and design their own mapping projects. Students were able to work with faculty and graduate students from CGU as they gathered, analyzed and presented data in this dynamic learning partnership. El Roble> Ted Ed Club This project funded iPads and accessories to enable students in the TED ED Club at El Roble to produce TED ED and Khan Academy-like videos. Students researched a topic of their choosing, wrote their presentations, recorded videos of their presentations using iMovie or the Explain Everything app, and shared their work with the community. San Antonio High School > iPad Applications for Class Critique in the Visual Arts Using an iPad and the Popplet app, students took photos of their work from multiple angles and organized self-critiques visually using mind maps. Other students added their own critiques, to which students could respond dynamically via the Popplet platform. The experiment transformed a traditionally static and paperbased medium into an interactive, technology-based format that fostered rich student interaction, discussion and collaboration in the critique of visual art. Danbury, El Roble, Claremont High School > Landfill Art: A Muliti-Campus Collaborative This project experimented with the use of Go-Pro video cameras to facilitate a multi-site collaboration of disabled students across CUSD on a large installation art piece resembling a landfill. "Landfill" involves a graphic and personalized approach to understanding the nature of waste management in contemporary society and the effects of mass consumer culture. The art project involved a particularly innovative use of technology. Sycamore > Day of Service "Service Day" was designed to engage students in service projects, develop their awareness of needs in the world and empower students to engage in independent acts of service in the future. The CEF grant, along with donations from local families and businesses, helped to fund 15 different service opportunities from which students selectively participated. Some examples include making blankets for animals at Precious Pet Rescue, donating books to schools in Pomona Unified, writing letters to service men and women, implementing playground improvements (painting a scaled US Map and decorating hopscotch areas), and preparing gifts for school children in the Philippines affected by the recent typhoon. Scholarships for Super Seniors The Claremont Educational Foundation (CEF) is pleased to announce the 2013–2014 recipients of the Teddie Warner Community Outreach Scholarship and the David L. Rose Instrumental Music Scholarship. This year’s recipients graduated this past summer from Claremont High School. Sarah Bratman is the recipient of the Teddie Warner Community Outreach Scholarship and Cecilia Sambrano is the recipient of the David L. Rose Instrumental Music Scholarship. The CEF awards scholarships each year to some of our district’s outstanding seniors. The Teddie Warner Community Outreach Scholarship was established to honor a student who has devoted significant time and energy to volunteering in the community. Teddie was a long-time member of Ed-Net and CEF’s boards, has volunteered in many capacities in the community, and spent time as coordinator for the school district’s volunteer program. $1,000 Teddie Warner Community Outreach Scholarship Winner for 2013-2014 Sarah has been dedicated to volunteer work with the Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity. She participated in several on-site construction projects with Habitat and was instrumental in fundraising for the Habitat Cardboard Box City event, raising awareness Sarah Bratman for homelessness. As President of Claremont High School’s Habitat Campus chapter, Sarah organized a Habitat booth at the LA County Fair, along with coordinating student participation in several local builds. In addition to her work with Habitat for Humanity, Sarah volunteers with Project Chicken Soup, a non-profit that delivers free and nutritious kosher meals to people in the LA area living with HIV/AIDS. Sarah also devotes her time tutoring a developmentally delayed elementary student in math, reading and spelling. In addition to Sarah’s community work, she also participated in the International Baccalaureate program and the track and cross-country teams. The David L. Rose Instrumental Music Scholarship is named in honor of the school district’s former Assistant Superintendent. It is awarded to a senior who has been involved in the school instrumental music program. Dr. Rose was crucial in establishing and then supporting Claremont’s after-school music program, made necessary after budget cuts took out the previous in-school music program. CEF was an important partner with the district in the development of the after-school music program. $1,000 David L. Rose Music Scholarship Winner for 2013-2014 Cecilia has been involved in music since the age of five, when she first started piano lessons. Since then, she has mastered the vibraphones, piccolo, bass guitar and ukulele. She was an active member in Claremont High School’s marching band, jazz band Cecilia Sambrano and full orchestra. Prior to graduation, Cecilia has taken leadership roles ranging from secretary to band captain and section leader. Throughout her leadership positions, she has contributed by teaching her section the foundations of marching and musicality along with organizing after school practice. She has a strong desire to share her love of music with the community and has performed countless times in performances at El Roble and Claremont High School.
