CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP OF SYDNEY – ANTHONY COLIN FISHER OP
Last Wednesday, November 12, Anthony Colin Fisher was installed as the new
Catholic Archbishop of Sydney. The installation followed his appointment
by Pope Francis on September 18, succeeding Cardinal George Pell, who was
appointed Prefect of the newly-established Secretariat for the Economy as
part of the reform of the Roman Curia.
Anthony Fisher OP was born the eldest of five children in Crows Nest, was
baptised at St Therese’s Church, Lakemba and attended the local parish
school. He attended Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview where he was dux in
1977.
He studied at the University of Sydney, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in History
and Bachelor of Laws. He was a practicing lawyer with Clayton Utz prior to
joining the Dominican Order.
He subsequently studied for a Bachelor of Theology, with first-class honours
at Yarra Theological Union, a college of the University of Divinity and later
obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioethics from Blackfriars Hall at the
University of Oxford.
He was ordained to the priesthood on September 14, 1991 and appointed
Bishop of Parramatta in 2010.
Archbishop Fisher’s parents attended his installation and records show that he is the first Catholic Archbishop of Sydney to have
both his parents alive for such an occasion. The Archbishop intends to build on the legacy of World Youth Day, prioritise religious
education in Sydney and wants to help young people discover a personal relationship with Christ through opportunities for quiet
one-on-one chances to talk to God.
We pray for our new Archbishop, his family and his flock as he undertakes this new ministry.
AUGUSTINIAN, DONATUS AIHMIOSION OGUN, OSA
The Order of St Augustine has announced the news that Pope Francis has named Donatus Aihmiosion Ogun OSA as the new Bishop
of the Diocese of Uromi, Edo State, Nigeria. Bishop Ogun has ministered in Jos, Iwaro and Warri, Nigeria and most recently he was
the Master of the Students’ Information and Director of the Saint Augustine Institute in Makurdi, Nigeria. We pray for Fr Ogun and all
Augustinians as they are called to serve the Church and its people.

INDEPENDENT SPORTING ASSOCIATION
John Papahatzis (Head of Sport and Co-curricular) and I attended the Independent Sporting Association (ISA) AGM meeting at
Blue Mountains Grammar School last Sunday and Monday. St Augustine’s College has been an Associate Member of the ISA for
eleven years and our recent application for membership has been extended for a further five years. We have applied for Full
Membership of the ISA and hopefully, following a review of the ISA Constitution, our application for Full Membership will be
accepted in the near future.
COLLEGE ASSEMBLY
I was unable to attend this week’s College assembly
due to the above ISA meeting, however, I understand
that the College community warmly welcomed Steve
Turner (Ambassador of White Ribbon Australia) and
staff and students from Arranounbai Special School.
L to R: Harry Turner (Goold House Captain) Steve Turner (Ambassador for
White Ribbon Australia) and Jackson Koop (Goold House)
My thanks to Kate Donnellan (Social Justice Co-ordinator), Daniel Fee (Year 11 Student Formation Leader), Harry Turner (Goold
House Captain) and members of Goold House for organising Steve to speak to the staff and students about Australia’s campaign
to stop violence against women.
Staff and students have been invited to purchase a ‘white ribbon’ this week and next in support of White Ribbon Day on
November 25.
ARRANOUNBAI SPECIAL SCHOOL VISIT
Staff and students from Arranounbai Special School
were welcomed by our Year 9 Unitas Groups who
performed on stage for our visitors.
As part of the Unitas Programme at the College, Year
9 students have been visiting the Arranounbai Special
School throughout the year. During these visits, our boys
joined with the Arranounbai students expressing joy
through singing. In reciprocation of their hospitality,
Peter Nolan (Dean of Middle School), Ben Marshall and
the Year 9 students invited the staff and students from
Arranounbai to join this week’s assembly. Our boys
performed two songs for the visitors and through song
and gestures welcomed them to our community.
2015 CAPTAIN OF BOATS
Congratulations to Zac Von Appen who has been appointed Captain of Boats for the
2015 rowing season.
Zac is in his fifth year of the rowing and has significantly contributed to College Rowing
over this time. This year Zac was part of the very successful College First IV rowing team
that won the Sydney University Cup and the NSW Schoolboys Championships.
Zac was also chosen for the Australian Junior Rowing Team to compete in Hamburg,
Germany this year where the team finished 13th in a strong international team.
We wish Zac and all rowing teams the very best for the 2015 rowing season.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS APPEAL
Again, this year, we are asking the College community to contribute to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal by generously
donating goods to the respective Tutor Groups Christmas Hampers which will be presented to the SVDP Society at our Christmas
Liturgy on the last day of term, December 3. Our Christmas Hampers Appeal forms a significant part of the Society’s work and they
are always in awe at the big-heartedness of our community. We thank you again for your support of this initiative in providing for
families in need.
REFLECTION… FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
This Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King which brings us to the conclusion of the liturgical
year. The Gospel reading for the Feast gives us a powerful reminder of how Jesus envisaged
the Kingdom of God. For Jesus, the ‘kingdom’ had nothing to do with power and status but a
rule of justice and peace for even the lowliest. “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of
the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” Mt 25:40

Positive role men play in
preventing violence against
women
I applaud the NRL for taking a tough stand towards South
Sydney’s Kirisome Auva’a following his guilty plea in May this
year to charges of recklessly causing serious injury and assault
to his girlfriend. Auva’a was a member of the South Sydney
Rabbitohs premiership winning side and both the club and
the NRL have come under fire for failing to act immediately
following the court’s verdict. That said, his nine month ban from
the game sends the strongest possible message that violence
against women will not be tolerated in the NRL.
As Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations,
explains, “Violence against women is perhaps the most
shameful human rights violation. And it is perhaps the most
pervasive. It knows no boundaries of geography, culture or
wealth. As long as it continues, we cannot claim to be making
real progress towards equality, development and peace”.
This week, the nation celebrates White Ribbon Day. At the
College Assembly this week, Harry Turner, Goold House Captain,
introduced former NRL representative player, Steve Turner, a
White Ribbon Ambassador. Steve spoke candidly of his own
experience growing up in a family where his mother and sisters
were victims of violence as a result of his father’s behaviour. He
suggested that violence against women was essentially a man’s
issue to address. In particular he said:
It is men’s wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends whose
lives are limited by violence and abuse.
It is a men’s issue because some men’s violence gives all men a bad
name.
It is a men’s issue because, as community leaders and decisionmakers, men can play a key role in helping stop violence against
women.
It is a men’s issue because men can speak out and step in when
male friends and relatives insult or attack women.
It is a men’s issue because a minority of men treat women and girls
with contempt and violence, and it is up to the majority of men to
help create a culture in which this is unacceptable.
2015 Senior School Goold House has selected White Ribbon as
its charity and intends to raise money and engage in support
work with women and girls who have been victims of violence
and assault. White Ribbon is the world’s largest male-led
movement working to end men’s violence against women and
girls. It aims to promote gender equity, healthy relationships
and a new vision of masculinity.
Encounter the unfamiliar
Journalist and academic, Dr Karen Malone once described an
encounter in central Tokyo after she witnessed a small group
of kindergarten students walking home from school. They
were oblivious of her presence as they busied themselves
crossing the streets. There was not a supervising adult in
sight, and no older siblings. As parents, I am sure many of us
would feel a great sense of worry about their safety. Malone
recounted her experience to a Japanese colleague, expressing
amazement that, “There were no adults watching out for them”.
Her colleague was a little taken back, “What do you mean, no
adults? There were the car drivers, the shopkeepers, the other
pedestrians. The city is full of adults who are taking care of
them!” I am informed, on average, 80 per cent of Primary age
Japanese children walk to school. In Australia, the figure in
most communities is as low as 30 per cent and yet I imagine
most parents recount as an eight year old walking to school
and regularly being out of earshot from parents while in the
company of other children. Was our parents’ confidence really
a masked negligence? I suspect that although they were
probably concerned about what conceivably might harm
us, they probably believed the risks were outweighed by the
positive experiences. It could be argued the freedom made us
independent, confident, physically active, socially competent
and good risk assessors. I suspect, however, if I asked parents
today to consider if they would give these same freedoms
now to their own children they would resoundingly deny such
liberties.
Are we killing our children with kindness? Is our desire to
protect our children actually making them more vulnerable?
Social commentator, Tim Gill, believes keeping children safe
involves them taking risks so that they can learn how to
assess and respond to them. He believes children will never
understand risk if society prevents them from experiencing it.
Gill writes about the importance of developing resilience; an
affirmation of the value of a child’s ability to recover and learn
from adverse outcomes. He argues resilience will only develop
if their childhood includes some simple ingredients: frequent,
unregulated, self-directed contact with people and places
beyond the spheres of family and school and the chance to
learn from their mistakes.
To enable such contact, however, young people need to be
taught the skills and learn the confidence to encounter the
unfamiliar and meet the challenges presented by that which
is unknown. Schools have an important role, both inside and
outside the classroom. Our Outdoor Education Programmes are
some of the more important aspects of the many rich learning
experiences that St Augustine’s College provides because they
allow our boys to challenge themselves in ways that are rare in
our urbanised and increasingly regulated society. Our Year 10
students are currently participating in an Outdoor Education
Programme in the Southern Highlands. The programme
provides the boys with safe risks and safe challenges so that
they learn to meet the unfamiliar, overcome difficulty, cope
with discomfort and, at times, deal with consequences, while
learning to co-operate, collaborate and coexist within a small
group.
Congratulations
Congratulations to the following students who have been
nominated for possible inclusion in Design TECH, the annual
exhibition of outstanding Major Design Projects developed by
HSC Design and Technology students: Lachlan Dunn, William
McRae, Nicholas Stocken and Benjamin Treeby.
Congratulations to Sandra Nicol, mother of Lucas, Year 11, who
recently received the NSW Department of Education Secretary’s
Award for Excellent Service. She was one of only three
recipients to receive this prestigious award.

Celebration of Excellence
Evening
The Senior School Celebration of Excellence Evening will occur
on Monday 1 December, 2014. It will commence at 7.00pm in the
Brimson Centre. This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge
and celebrate students who have made significant contributions
across a variety of domains. I look forward to seeing parents and
students at the compulsory event.
Year 10 Outdoor Education
Camp
The Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp commenced Monday and
will conclude this Friday. Upon departure Monday morning, the
boys were nervous and excited about participating in the five
day Camp. I visited the boys today in the Southern Highlands
and was impressed with their enthusiasm and good humour. I
wish to thank the Year 10 Student Formation leader, Ilona Welch,
for her efficient management of the Year 10 Outdoor Education
Programme
Uniform and Grooming
Please be aware that it is important that our students continue to
maintain high standards in relation to uniform and grooming. As
the conclusion of the academic year is drawing nearer, students
sometimes feel that standards can be relaxed. This is not correct.
Student Formation Leaders will continue to challenge students
to meet the expectations of the College in this area. I thank
parents for their ongoing support.
Representative Sport
I have been impressed with the recent feedback regarding our
College representative teams participating in summer sports.
Our students are representing the College with great pride
and distinction every week across Sydney. I wish to thank the
managers and coaches of the teams for their ongoing effort and
commitment.
Year 12 Formal
On Friday, along with other staff members, I attended the Year
12 Formal at Miramare Gardens. It was an enjoyable evening
witnessing the students celebrate the end of their schooling
years. I would like to thank Year 12 Student Formation Leader,
Kirsty Begg, for her dedication and care of the boys during the
year and especially during the HSC. Miramare Gardens staff
congratulated the College on the boys’ excellent manners and
good behaviour on the night. I would like to thank our students
for their praiseworthy conduct, and wish them all the best for the
future.
Year 12 Students and friends, dressed to impress

As we near the end of the year I remind boys of the importance
of maintaining positive relationships with each other and
ensuring that they finish the year with excellent standards of
behaviour. As teachers complete reports, it is important that the
boys receive comments indicative of not only their academic
progress, but also their application and behaviour.
Community Mass
Congratulations to Year 6L and 6C who prepared the
Community Mass this morning. It was wonderful to see so
many parents come along to celebrate the Eucharist with their
sons in a prayerful, contemplative atmosphere. The boys read
beautifully and made the Mass a very special occasion.

P&F PRESIDENT’S REPORT
As the school year comes rapidly to a close we start looking towards 2015 and start making plans for P&F involvement in the
school. Key to this participation is the election of the P&F Executive.
The P&F Annual General Meeting was held last week and we now have a new Executive in place.
We are looking forward to a year full of activity in support of St Augustine’s College and encourage as many of you to become
involved through our P&F meetings and events.
If you have an suggestions for our P&F please email me at [email protected].
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing members of the Executive, Liliana O’Toole, Sharon Porter and Lisa
Watt, and will write in more detail about their contributions in next week’s Tolle Lege.
We are also looking for a member of the school community who would like to become involved to file the Vice Presidents
role. This is not an overly demanding role. It is an easy way to become involved with your son’s school. If you are interested

ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
In an effort to further enhance the study culture that exists in the College, students are offered additional academic support after
school in the Augustine Resource Centre (ARC). The ARC is open for students in Years 5 - 9 until 5:00pm and until 6:00pm for
students in Years 10 - 12 on Monday to Thursday. We are fortunate to have a number of recent past scholars from the College,
including Jordan Candido, Keith Hardy and Josh Wigney, available to support students with their studies during these times.
Academic staff also generously make themselves available to assist boys. Students, particularly in Years 11 and 12, are encouraged
to stay on at school and complete their homework in study partnerships in our well-resourced library. It is a great opportunity for
all students to ask for help in areas where they may be struggling and also to consolidate work they have studied in class.

Captain of RowinG - Zac Von Appen
The College acknowledged and presented Zac as Captain of
Rowing for the 2014/15 rowing season at the College assembly.
Zac is into his 5th year of the rowing program. Always a strong
team player, he made steady progress in his technique and
strength to get to where he is today.
Ground Coordinator to look after the setup of Passmore each
week. This involves putting the nets out for teams to put them
up and take down. Then return the nets to the shed at the end
of the day.

won the Sydney University Cup for the best schoolboy rowing IV

In Penrith as part of the St Augustine’s First Four they won the
NSW Schoolboys Championships with a time of 6.43 minutes
over 2,000 metres, making them the fastest schoolboys IV in
NSW.
ROWING
They finished off the season in Australia taking third place at
the Australian Championship (Schoolboys’ Coxed Four) in March
2014.
Along with another member of the College’s 1st IV, Zac joined
forces with two other rowers to compete at the National Team
trials under Coach Matthias Ungemach. They competed in a
rigorous national Team trials’ schedule, winning every race
against strong GPS Crews and Sydney University over the course
of the week. The two St Augustine’s students competed as part
of the Australian Junior Rowing Team in Hamburg Germany and
finished 13th in a strong international field.
In this 2015 season, he has commenced with helping coach
new members of the squad learn how to row, as he continues
to represent the College and work towards potentially
representing Australia again. Zac’s outstanding contribution to
the College Rowing programme makes him a worthy recipient
of Captain of Rowing.

FOOTBALL (SOCCER)
Season 2015
Planning for season 2015 for St Augustine’s Football next season
is well underway. With that in mind we are looking for parent
helpers/volunteers to come forward and to take on roles within
the football club. If you can help for the following roles or have
any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at the College.
Assistance needed for the following in Season 2015:
Individuals with experience in football coaching or player
selection to help with our grading sessions at the start of the
year. They are held in the afternoons near the start of the school
year.
Saints Four Surprised Themselves
On Saturday the St Augustine’s Rowing Squad competed on the
Olympic Course in Penrith at the Newington College Regatta
with a fleet of five boats.
First up were the Year 8 quads for their first race of the season,
for some boys it was their maiden regatta. In lack of Year 8
events they had been entered in the 5th and 6th division of the
Year 9 events. The competition was a year older and has raced
one season already. Our crews finished 5th and 6th in their
finals, they improved since the last regatta and gained valuable
experience. Their times were in the ball park for this time of the
year and we are looking forward to the races against their age
peers in January.
Second up were the Year 9 quads which raced in the top tier
1st and 2nd division of their age group and finished 4th and 5th in
the final. The 1st quad stroked by Marcus Oates showed great
blade work and a gutsy race, which saw them finishing strong
behind the Scots College, The Kings School and Riverview. The
finishing time is promising and both crews are on track for the
Championship races after Christmas.
The appearance of the first Year10 eight has been greatly
anticipated by the rowing community. Unfortunately crew
members Jackson Brouwers and Peter Brongo had been injured
and sick and were unable to compete this weekend. Both boys
are on their way to recovery and working hard on land to re-join
the crew.
The remaining Year 10 crew of Monty Ravenscroft (cox), Bjarne
Ungemach (stroke), Felix Daddo, Daniel Samus and Jack Donkers
(bow) took the challenge to row in the School Boy fours against
Year 11/12 students of all GPS Schools. Based on their age
and their training boat speed they had been entered in the
2nd Division. Our crew finished second in the initial heat, 6 sec
behind Joeys and qualified for the final. The brief for the final
was to stay with the favourite Joeys crew and challenge them as
long as possible over the 2000m course.
Spectators and the rowing community along the Penrith Lakes
Shore agreed that the final was the most thrilling of the day.
It was a neck on neck battle between our crew and Joeys. Our
boys surprised themselves and everyone else by winning this
spectacular race by 2.4sec or one boat length. The finish time of
7:02min is fantastic for such a young crew and on par with the
winner of the 1st division!
BASKETBALL
The overall result is encouraging and the Saints rowers look
forward to the ISA Rowing Championships on Sunday. Saints
will participate with the entire squad. The Yr10 eight will start
in the open school boy eights with Zac von Appen in the stroke
seat. Zac will also compete in the 5k time trial in the single on
Saturday, which is a compulsory milestone for representative
rowers.
In the fifth round of the ISA season Saints were finally at home
in the Northern Beaches Indoor Sports Centre against St Patricks
College.
ISA Round 5 VS St Patrick’s College
In the 13’s The team got off to a great start with Jacob Ratcliff,
Joe Purvis and Zack Kimball scoring early to give Saints the
lead. Daniel Ala then scoring before halftime to put Saints
ahead 16-10. Jack Reddy, Banjo Talbot and Tom Latu all
added baskets in the second half Saints team defence held
strong taking out the game with a final score of 32-19 (top
scorers include Zack Kimball 10 points Jacob Ratcliff 9 points
and Daniel Ala 6 points).
In the U14’s The boys proved how much they have already
improved as a team so far this season, beating the opposition
by 12, when last time they came up against St Pat’s they won
by just 2 points in overtime. Patrick Fraser had an exceptional
game, top scoring with 15 points even after taking a number
of hard hits throughout the game. Luis Ross was second
top scorer, with 8 points. Cameron Giuffrida had another
outstanding defensive game and was also third top scorer with
7 points. Their coaches were very proud of the way the boys
played, and congratulate them on keeping their composure
against a rough team and playing with good sportsmanship
throughout the entire game. The 14s remain undefeated so far
this ISA season. Final Score 36-24.
The U15’s took a half to get warmed up, but with a 32pt second
half, Saints raced to a 51-29 win over St Patrick’s. A suffocating
press to start the 2nd half ignited a 10-0 run that got them
rolling. The offensive attack was unselfish and well balanced,
with 8 of 9 players scoring. Great interior passing led to easy
buckets inside. Sam Porter sliced his way to the hoop and led
all scorers with 15pts, while Will Wiggins had 10pts, and Aiden
Pashley scored 7.Harry Price chipped in with 6pts, while Luke
Ratcliff and Jesse Allen added 4pts a piece. A good team win.
In the U17’s Saints started slowly, allowing St Patrick’s the early
lead. Brayden Capstick, Louie Hudson, Seamus Fraser and Rory
Fowler got Saints going with baskets, Anthony De Lorenzo and
Lachlan Channell added scores before halftime Saints just in
front 19-16. Matt Helm busy with some nice baskets after the
break Saints holding St Pat’s to just 4 points to go away in the
second half to finish 38-20 (top scorers include Louie Hudson 9
points, Anthony De Lorenzo and Seamus Fraser 6 points).
Matt Ungemach
Rowing Coach
In the College Firsts, Saints shot selection was ordinary and
their lack lustre defence left St Pat’s open for easy shots and
drives to the basket to see Saints down 10-23 at the first break.
Saints worked their way back into the match with good team
defence in the second holding St Pat’s to 7 points, however
still down 23-30 at halftime. After halftime, Saints intensity
picked up, team defence was extended and rebounding really
improved holding St Pat’s to 9 points 45-39 at the last break.
Nice three point shooting by Isaiah Lee, Ben Marr and Lucas
Nicol plus great play inside by Denis Radosevic, Ben Woollett,
Brock Bogg and Angus Richmond saw Saints come away with
a nice win Final Score Saints 69-52 (top scorers include Denis
Radosevic and Lucas Nicol 19 points and Isaiah Lee 12 points).
IPSHA
In IPSHA Saints played Cranbrook at Rose Bay in their final game
of the season.
In the Year 5’s Saints were in a tough match from tipoff. Great
team passing and strong defence worked nicely for Saints but
this was outmatched by the taller Cranbrook opponents. It was a
great finish to the year lots of enthusiasm with everyone scoring
on offense Final Score 32- 42.
In the Year 6’s the boys had a great win. Team defence was
strong which lead to some awesome baskets. An all-round great
team win Final Score 45-16 to finish off their season.
