Our Open Day will be held on Friday, March 13 commencing at 4.30pm with all families warmly invited. Please help

The enrolment deadline for Years 5 and 7, 2017 is March 27, 2015. Early interviews will be held for siblings prior to this
date. A reminder to current parents who wish to enrol their son in Years 5 and 7 in 2017, please ensure an enrolment

LENT, EASTER AND THE ANZAC SPIRIT
This year Australians will celebrate one of the most significant events in Australia’s history, i.e. the 100th anniversary of the
ANZACS. At yesterday’s College assembly, I reminded the boys of the supreme sacrifice of the101, 000 Australian men and
women who died in all wars so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today.
The ANZAC banners displayed around the College are a sign of the deep reality of ANZAC. At the beginning of the school
year, all staff and students were given an ANZAC pin to wear which is in the shape of the well-known Australian ‘slouch hat’.
At our ANZAC Ceremony to be held on Friday, April 24, we will also present the boys with an ANZAC commemorative coin.
In remembering the ANZAC spirit, it is fitting to reflect during the Lenten season on the connection between the suffering
and death of our service men and women in war, and the meaning of the death and resurrection of Jesus.
This year the Student Leadership theme is Random Acts of Kindness. I encouraged the boys to reflect on the wonderful
examples of the story of the Good Samaritan and of the courageous Australian hero, Jack Simpson Kilpatrick, and his
donkey, who rescued 300 wounded soldiers from the notorious Monash Valley.
Lent calls us to reflect on life, giving, sacrifice and new life. It is a time
to have more compassion for the poor, for the lonely, for the broken
and for the lost. Through our unplanned random acts of kindness
let us reach out to them with generosity, with compassion and
with genuine and life-giving love. This is the real aim of the Lenten
journey. Let us support one another along the way.

appointed the following senior students as Captains of their
respective sport and co-curricular.

INVITATION TO HEAR BISHOP DAVID WALKER DISCUSS THE CONFESSIONS OF
ST AUGUSTINE
Bishop David Walker will be presenting an overview of the book, The Confessions of St Augustine, at the Parish Centre at Our Lady
of Good Counsel Parish in Forestville.
This classic autobiography tells the story of this famous saint’s journey from his sinful youth to Christian conversion under the
influence of St Ambrose. Augustine writes as a common man about his struggles and he is one of the most influential Fathers of
the early Church.
The programme will be from 7.00pm to 8.30pm over four Thursdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26 in the Parish Centre at OLGC.

Reflection
As we try to give more time to prayer during this Lent, let us ensure that Jesus remains at the centre of our hearts. We can meet
him in quiet contemplation and prayer, in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist and to re-commit ourselves to attend
Mass during the Season of Lent and in preparation for the celebration of Easter.
“God, heavenly Father,
Look upon me and hear my prayer during this holy season of Lent.
By the good works you inspire, help me to be disciplined and to be
renewed in spirit.
Keep me from sin and help me to live by your commandment of love

From the Head of School...
Rituals are central to our
faith
We are about to celebrate the second Sunday of Lent. The word
‘Lent’ means lengthen and refers to the season when daylight
hours become longer in the Northern Hemisphere. There
Lent heralds the arrival of spring. It celebrates life emerging
from darkness. In the Southern Hemisphere, Lent marks the
beginning of Autumn. It is the season where the trees lose their
leaves and begin to plant roots deep in the soil. During Lent,
we too, are encouraged to let go of unnecessary layers and look
deeply into our hearts for what sustains us. It is a time to look
beyond ‘what I can give up’ but rather to see ‘what I can be’. It
requires us to look more deeply into ourselves and our own
practices to help us love and serve God, and others, better.
A Lenten Prayer adapted from St Ambrose who had a
significant role in Augustine’s conversion to Catholicism:
This Lent – let your door stand open to receive Christ,
unlock your soul to him
offer him welcome in your mind
and then you will see the riches of simplicity,
the treasures of peace,
and the joy of grace.
Conscious commitment to the
important
By this time of year, students should be well and truly immersed
into a structured study routine. I would, however, be ‘sticking
my head in the sand’ if I believed all students were working
at their capacity, using time wisely and being productive in
their studies. All of us are tired of reading articles about time
management. Often they include long lists of how to be more
effective with your time. They promise ‘7 simple steps to better
time management’. They give suggestions about how to suck
more out of our allocated 24 hours. Whilst these guidelines
make sense to all students, many struggle with implementation.
In attempting to give a more concise message, I believe time
management is simply to know your priorities. That’s it! Nothing
more. Once boys have their priorities in order, they can easily
allocate their time around them. If priorities are not clear, then
the important things can be left undone or half-done. Stephen
Covey, co-author of First Things First agrees and says, “Anything
less than a conscious commitment to the important, is an
unconscious commitment to the unimportant”. I saw a fellow at
a cricket game recently wearing a tee shirt with an upside down
tick and ‘Just Stop It’ insignia. Funny, yes, but also very true. If
you want your son to improve his time management, then make
sure he stops doing what he was doing wrong last year. If he
does not change, then expect more of the same.
The problem facing teenage boys is the choices before them
are all good ones. Recently I interviewed a student who had
underperformed in his studies last year. I asked him to write
down all the things he had done last year. The list was extensive
including working two jobs, being involved in a band, working
in a drama production, leading a children’s community group,
playing representative football and surfing. We filled a A4
page. Little wonder he struggled in some subjects and became
quite ill by the end of the year. He is a delightful student. He is
admired by all, is sociable, friendly and very reliable. Sadly, he
had not learnt how to say ‘no’. I think he was a bit shocked to see
the evidence in front of him when the list began to fill the page.
Sometimes busyness can be a wonderful excuse for not doing
the things that need to be done. Success in studies is about
‘striking a balance’ between the many commitments boys must
juggle each day. There is a need to actively include ‘me’ time,
just as important is the time for work and helping others.
It has been said, ‘time heals all wounds.’ I do not always agree
as wounds remain. One of the characters in a Dr Seuss book
sums up the world of some of our boys, ‘How did it get so late so
soon? ‘ The establishment time of year has well and truly passed.
If structured study routines are still a promise yet to be fulfilled,
it is time for parents to sit with their son to ensure priorities are
in order.
Congratulations
Congratulations to the 1st IV Rowing crew following their victory
at the Riverview Gold Cup Regatta last weekend. The crew led
by Australian representative, Zac Von Appen (Year 12), and three
Year 10 students: Peter Brongo, Felix Daddo and Daniel Samus,
with coxswain, Montgomery Ravenscroft (Year 8), performed
above expectations competing against crews essentially made
up of only Year 12 students. Furthermore, the three Year 10 crew
members competed in the Year 10 Eight Final 20 minutes prior
to their victory race in the 1st IV; a remarkable achievement!

from the Dean of Middle School...
Last week’s Ash
Wednesday Liturgy,
marking the
beginning of Lent,
was an outstanding
example of reverence,
respect and
genuine spirituality.
The service was
excellently led by
Year 9 students and
we emphasised that
now is a time to
explore the interior,
to reflect on our actions, words and intentions and attempt to
change where necessary and possible. Perhaps abstaining from
something may help find better meaning to this exploration
of the interior. The liturgy also touched on the meaning of
the ashes – that our earthly life is finite and the importance of
humility in our Catholic lives. I encourage families to continue
this discussion with the boys over the Lenten period.
Each Friday Week 2 the Middle School will be gathering for an
extended pastoral care session. These sessions may run as a
whole Year Group or Tutor Group. Last week saw Year 7 run a
specific ‘Introduction into High School’ programme with Year
8 and 9 launching their Service Education Programme. Kate
Donnellan - SEA Programme Coordinator, ran this seminar and
went through the booklet that all parents received at the Parent
Information Night. Kate discussed the central role of service or
giving time for others in our Catholic tradition and explored
ways students could complete their responsibilities. A reminder,
we expect all Year 8 and 9 students to complete 15 hours of
logged service this year. Tutor Groups will be celebrating these
accomplishments at the end of the year.
Year 9 Glen Gerreyn –
Day of Hope
Last Tuesday Year 9 were treated to an inspirational talk by one
of the country’s best motivational speakers, Glen Gerreyn. It was
excellently received by the boys who explored the notion of
hope, goal setting, courage and personal fortitude. I encourage
Year 9 parents to enquire about the day with their sons.
Over the last week or so Middle School families have received a
number of important letters via email. I would like to highlight
two.
Year 8 and 9 Outdoor
Education Camp
All necessary paper work should be promptly returned to your
son’s Tutor. In summary, all boys need to return a permission
slip. If your son has asthma or is allergic then separate forms
need to be filled in and returned. On the asthma and allergy
forms there are a series of ‘Key Questions’. If YES is answered
to any of these then a ‘Fitness to Participate’ form is required,
signed by your doctor.

Year 9 Camp Gallipoli
This will be an extraordinary, once in a life time event where
all Year 9 plus about 12 College staff will be sleeping under
the stars, being entertained, experiencing authentic food and
joining in the dawn service with thousands of other Sydney
siders to mark the 100 year anniversary of the landing at
Gallipoli Cove. Letters, information and permission slips were
sent out last Friday and I ask that permission slips are returned
promptly to Tutors.

eMerit Cards and eWhite Cards
Presenter Glen Gerreyn, Peter Nolan, Dean of Middle School and
Year 9 students
The issuing of Merit Cards for commendable behaviour and
White Cards for concerning behaviour has been part of our
student management system for many year. They remain this
year although there is a new process of issuing these cards.
Both will be issued electronically with immediate emails sent
to parents and Student Formation Leaders. At this point only
a brief description is noted on the electronic notification
though very soon will be able to elaborate on this description.
On students’ Coneqt dashboard they will be able to see and
monitor the number of Merit Cards. Student Formation Leaders
will also closely monitor and the process of issuing a hard copy
Merit Certificate for four Merit Cards will remain.

blazer and trousers. Years 5 to 9 College issue grey. Years 10 to 12
College issue black with grey trousers. Orders are now open and
will close 25 March.
Please bring your son in for a fitting as we have 12 different sizes
in junior and even more in senior.
Costs are $170 for the junior and $200 for the senior.
We will also have available the new sports top for those of you
who would like a second shirt in sizes 10, 12, 14 and xs. Rugby and
soccer uniforms are also available. The new College tracksuit is in

from the Dean of Primary School...
I am pleased to announce that Tevita Halaifonua will be returning
to the College next Monday 2nd March after a two week layoff from
illness. Tevita has made a full recovery and we are all delighted to
have such an integral part of our Primary team back on deck. I can
also announce that recently Tevita announced his engagement to his
partner Tegan. We wish them all the best as they embark on the next
stage in their lives together. Welcome back Tevita.
MERIT AWARD RECIPIENTS . . .
Communication
As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter and is the case at the start
of a new year, some boys do find the transition into a new class
challenging. It is important that as adults we acknowledge these
difficulties, but at the same time be supportive of teacher routines
and styles. It is my experience that this period of adjustment is best
managed in open communication with your son’s class teacher. Of
course if you feel the need for me to become involved after initial
contact with your son’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to contact
me. In an Augustinian school it is vital that we restore damaged
relationships, allowing all parties the opportunity to express
concerns and hopefully reconcile differences in an environment
respecting the dignity of all parties. Having an open mind and a
willingness to forgive is a great example for our boys to follow.
Merits
I congratulate all of our merit award winners over the past two
weeks. At our recent Primary assembly last Monday, I had the
pleasure of awarding Gold, Silver, Bronze and Encouragement
awards to each of our Year 5 and 6 classes. I am very proud of the
way all boys have committed themselves to their studies, in
particular their organisation and use of diaries. As I visited all classes
this week I encouraged the boys to take pride in the presentation
of their work and concentrate on their handwriting. Research into
handwriting and its importance in helping develop fine motor skills
is again on the educational agenda in Primary Schools.
Professional development
I will be absent from the College this Thursday and Friday as I will
be attending a conference. I can be contacted through our Primary
School Secretary, Megan Cashman. Upon my return to the College I
will disseminate the relevant information from the conference, which
has as its focus the work of John Hasttie, an eminent educational
researcher and guru when it comes to improving academic
engagement and performance.
Science
One of our major focuses in the Primary School at St Augustine’s
is an emphasis on Science and Technology, in particular working
technologically through practical hands on activities. Often Science
and Technology is the subject teachers find most challenging and
not taught that well, but not at St Augustine’s. The very fact we are
an all boys’ school necessitates a curriculum which is ‘hands-on’ and
our teachers are very comfortable in delivering such a curriculum.
Our Yr 5 classes are currently studying ‘Living Things’ and our Yr 6
team ‘Robotics’.

Turn my heart to you
Reflection for the Second Week of Lent . . .
While we are on this earth, we cannot avoid falling. But what is important, anyway, is not to ignore these falls or to minimize them
as being so small they are not worthy of our notice. Of what are made the rivers that overflow to flood the fields, but small drops of
water? A small leak, not repaired in time, in the long run causes the ship to sink. Saint Augustine, Sermon 58, 9, 10

SOCIAL JUSTICE
Lenten Appeal:
During Lent students at the College will raise funds through their
Tutor Groups.
We are hoping that each group will raise approximately $200. A partial
amount of the funds raised will be donated to a very needy and worthwhile
cause - the TMMR Orphanage in the Philippines. The remainder of the funds
will be directed at implementing the building projects in Nepal and
Cambodia in the December holidays.
2015 Project Compassion:
The theme for 2015 is Food for Life. As Pope Francis says: ‘It is a well – known fact that current levels of production are sufficient,
yet millions of people are still suffering and dying of starvation. This is truly scandalous.’ The College will be donating $2,000
raised from the Lenten Appeal to Caritas in support of Project Compassion.

Middle School Service Programme:
The aim of the Middle School Service Education Programme is to build upon a culture of service we have here at the College and
to provide a clear framework for boys to document and share their existing service achievements. It is our hope that through
participation in this programme the students will experience the joy that comes from serving others. We will be asking that
boys in Year 8 and 9 participate or give of their time to others for 15 hours per year outside school hours and that these hours be

11 & 12 student every week and current and previous copies

UNSW is hosting their Built Environment Parent and
Student Information Session on 25/3/15
UNSW Medicine information evening is on 12/3/15
UNSW Campus Tours are conducted most Fridays and
the first Saturday of each month
UMAT is a test that is used specifically to assist with the
selection of students into the medicine, dentistry and
health science degree programs at undergraduate level
at the universities listed on the website. Registrations
for UMAT 2015 are now open and close 5:00pm (AEST)
5/6/15. The test takes place nationally on 29/7/15.
Cadetships
•
Cadetships provide cadets with paid employment while
they undertake university studies. This year Professional
Cadetships Australia will be offering the Business
Cadetships Program and the Engineering & Technology
Cadetships Program.

STUDY SKILLS TIP
Prioritising using Rock, Pebbles, Sand
Do you ever find that you spend a long time doing little fiddly things then find that you have no time left for the larger tasks you
need to get done?
Try this experiment: Take a jar, some rocks, some pebbles and sand. What happens if you put the sand in first then the pebbles?
The rocks won’t fit. But if you do it the other way, put the rocks in first, then pop in the pebbles around the sides of the rocks, then
sprinkle in the sand it all fits in no problem at all.
What does this mean? It is an analogy for how to make the most of blocks of time. If you do the big tasks first (the rocks), you
will find time for the smaller tasks (the pebbles) and you’ll easily sprinkle in the sand (the little fiddly things). So if you deal with
the rocks first you’ll actually still find time for the other tasks to fit around it.
If you find this technique too challenging, you can set yourself a strict half hour or so to knock over as many of the little things as
possible before you start. Once time is up, you then use the block of time to work on the big important tasks. So draw up a table
with 3 columns and put all your work into these columns.
ROCKS are the important and urgent tasks
PEBBLES are the tasks that may also be important but are not as urgent
SAND are the little fiddly tasks that you can slot in anywhere
Do the rocks first, then the pebbles, then the sand.
Another approach you might like to try is the Rule of Three:

Circle the top 3 tasks that need to be done. What is most important and most urgent?
Put them in order from 1 to 3.
Start at the first task and complete it before moving onto the second.
Once all three tasks are completed, look through your list again to choose the new top 3 tasks.
Don’t cheat yourself – you have to complete fully the first task before moving to the second.
First write a list of everything you need to do. Circle the top 3 tasks that need to be done. What is most important and most
urgent? Put them in order from 1 to 3. Start at the first task and complete it before moving onto the second. Once all three tasks

academic success. This evening takes parents and students through these essential skills and how
students can integrate these into their approach to school.

improve their ability to learn and study. Our aim is to give students strategies to unlock the power of
their minds and help them become effective and successful learners. ELES is offering St Augustine’s
College parents and students the chance to attend the following Parent/Student Evening:
‘TOOLS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESS’
The main areas that will be covered are:

Managing homework and assignments effectively by
efficient time management.
Learning to be more organised for school and at home.
Working effectively in high school.
How to study and prepare for tests in high school.
Parents can expect to gain a greater understanding of tools students can use to help them achieve
academic success and students can learn how to make the most out of their abilities through simple but
effective techniques. The feedback from parents and students who attended this session last year was
excellent and of course this will be a great refresher for Year 8 students.

interactive, the session will not be of full value unless both the students and a parent
attend. Both students and parents also need to bring along a pen each (and one

CLANCY BUILDING PROJECT UPDATE
The Clancy Project is progressing well. The demolition stage has now been completed and the Science and Primary School building
site is now being prepared for the commencement of the construction phase. Over the next few weeks piling will begin to set the
deep foundations for the new building. Meanwhile the refurbishment of the Mendel Wing continues with the new Canteen and
Food Services area and Uniform shop due for completion by the start of Term 2.

P&F President’s Report
Next week the P&F will be holding our term 1 online forum.
This is a great way for those who cannot attend the P&F
meeting but still want to ask a question of the P&F or make a
suggestion to do so. If the P&F does not have an answer we can
certainly raise it with the school and get back to you.
As the school is rolling out the new Atlas website for this term
we will carry out the forum though emails (next term we should
be back to the full open forum). Please email questions or
suggestions to [email protected]. We will try and
reply with an answer or seek this from the school. Where
appropriate in coming weeks we will share the questions and
answers or suggestions with the school community through my
report.
In thinking how we would manage the forum this term,
it reminded me that schools are dynamic and changing
environments. Change brings a need to adapt and adjust
which is a learning skill in itself and so part of our and the boy’s
education.
It also reflects the fact that we as a community can influence
that change. If you engage with the school community and
have your say, you add to the development of the school which
aids all of our boys. Sometimes the suggestion or question
might seem small, but all of these go to the development of
great school so do not be afraid to ask a question or make a
suggestion.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
In an effort to further enhance the study culture that exists in the College, students are offered additional academic support after
school in the Augustine Resource Centre (ARC). The ARC is open for students in Years 5 - 9 until 5:00pm and until 6:00pm for
students in Years 10 - 12 on Monday to Thursday. We are fortunate to have a number of recent past scholars from the College,
including Keith Hardy, Jordan Candido and Josh Wigney, available to support students with their studies during these times.
Academic staff also generously make themselves available to assist boys. Students, particularly in Years 11 and 12, are encouraged
to stay on at school and complete their homework in study partnerships in our well-resourced library. It is a great opportunity for all
students to ask for help in areas where they may be struggling and also to consolidate work they have studied in class. All students
attending the ARC after school must have work to complete.

Language Study Tours
“You live a new life for every new language you speak. If
you know only one language, you live only once.”

Being immersed in the language and culture of another
country not only improves one’s language acquisition, but it
also assists in developing 21st Century skills. A way that
St Augustine’s College enables our students to have
authentic language learning experiences is through our
Language Study Tours. Students return from these tours
with increased empathy, understanding and acceptance
of difference. The boys also have greater confidence when
communicating both in their mother tongue and their
second language.

A parent evening titled “Positive Parenting with Restorative Language and
Practices” explores the challenges of parenting as well as provide an insight
into a variety of parenting styles.
Strategies and guiding principles are provided to encourage parents to
develop quality learning relationships, which contributes to the building wellbeing and resilient children.

The evening provides parents with an opportunity to:

Meet other parents and share common experiences

Discuss the important role parents as the primary educator
•
Share what we have learnt from our parents
•
Understand the science of the human brain and behaviour

Gain some insight on current studies on effective parenting styles that
reflect a Restorative approach

Provide useful tips for parents with our children
Presenter, Maurizio Vespa has been an educator for 23 years in the Catholic
School system. He has a Masters in Education, Diploma in Teaching,
Graduate Diploma in Counselling, Certificate in Mediation and Conflict
Coaching. He is an accredited Triple P Parenting Facilitator and the Director of
Restorative Wellbeing.
He has worked with over 330 school communities across NSW, Victoria,
Queensland, Canberra and South Australia. Maurizio is currently on the
Board of Restorative Practices International and the Chairperson for the NSW
Chapter of RPI.

Intermediate and Senior Theatresports teams will be selected
later in Term 1 and these teams will attend training and

LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT
Middle School Concert Band had a very successful workshop
day last Sunday. The boys had 5 hours of intensive work on the
new repertoire with their tutors. As a consequence the group
who came on Sunday are sounding very good.
If you would like to start learning an instrument in 2015, the
College provides several instrumental tutors. Please enroll by
contacting Lynne Papahatzis.
Primary School Concert Band will have their workshop THIS
SUNDAY, with an 11.45 am arrival and will conclude with an
‘open workshop’ for parents to come and listen to the day’s
work. The Open Rehearsal will begin at 4pm.
We will be providing a ‘snack’ for the boys during one of the
breaks, as such, we recommend that all boys eat lunch before
coming. Boys may bring their own food if they wish.
INSTRUMENT DONATIONS
The College Music Department is always looking to acquire
instruments. Doesn’t matter how big or small it is, or whether it
is not in full working order, we’ll fix it up and find it a great new
home! If you have an instrument lying around unused, please
contact Joseph Montz.

OUR TOWN
The major senior school co-curricular Drama production
this term is ‘Our Town’ by Thornton Wilder. Many students are
currently in the middle of the rehearsal process, preparing for
4 shows between the 4th & 7th of March. This production is
in collaboration with Stella Maris College in Manly and will be
staged at the ‘Star of the Sea Theatre’. Bookings can be made

Captain of Swimming- Evan Stratton
Harry Pietor in Year 11 has been doing tae kwon do for the past
6 years at Spirit Taekwondo in Brookvale. He has been training
with Master Jason Smith 3 times a week in pursuit of his black
belt. The training and grading process has been fairly intense
and has taken an enormous amount of effort and commitment
from Harry. He was recently successful in achieving his full black
belt at the age of 16 is a remarkable accomplishment, as most
adults would struggle to achieve at this level. Congratulations
on a great achievement.
He has been a regular member of the ISA representative
team and has also been selected for the NSW Combined
Independent Schools and NSW All Schools carnivals.
He excels at the longer distance events and has competed in
the Open water 5 kilometre / Freestyle events for his Club.
Sport and Co-curricular
Captains
At the School assembly the College recognised the enormous
contribution of Year 12 students who have contributed many
years of service to their chosen sport or activity by presenting
them with the badge of honour as Captain.
This Yr 12 student has represented the College Swimming team
each year since 2010.
At the College level he is a valued member of both our Freestyle
and Medley Relay teams.
His selection for this position is well deserved and a testimony
to his dedicated approach to his chosen sport and we look
forward to his leadership at the ISA swimming carnival as the
College defends its ISA title of champion school.
Rowing
I would like to congratulate the first lot of captains selected and
look forward in seeing them lead their respective sport and
activity during the season.
The College had some great results last Saturday, at the
Riverview Gold Cup. Rowing against many of the GPS Schools
Highlights were:

This student starting debating at the College in Year 7. Each year his oral presentation skills continues to improve
as he has transformed into a very articulate, confident and

his depth of knowledge and the outstanding way in which he

This student is a gifted saxophonist who has been involved in a
broad range of curriculum and co-curricular musical activities
since his arrival at the College as a Year 7 student.
He has been an active member of Concert Bands, Stage Bands
and Jazz Ensemble and has served with distinction as a Section
leader for Wind instruments.
He has willingly and enthusiastically performed at countless
events during his 6 Years at the College and always performs
with excellence. He is a Music 2 and Extension student who is preparing a very
advanced repertoire for his HSC Performances later this year.

CRICKETERS OF THE WEEK
Last week, Lachlan Kerr of the U16-18 Whites made this column
for his great Hattrick v Collaroy Plateau. In the second innings
on saturday, Lachlan went on to take 3 for 6 (for match figures
of 8 for 10) and score 49 valuable runs. Also on the weekend,
Callum Hogan for the U/14’s Green side scored 50 not out
against St Augustine’s White. He was assisted by Will McMurdo
in an 87 run partnership along the way.
NSWCCC U15 TEAM SELECTIONS
Congratulations to Aiden Bariol and Jack Edwards who were
recently selected to represent the NSW Combined Catholic
College U15 team at the All Schools Carnival in March. The CCC
Team will play matches against CHS and CIS and a NSW team
will be selected for the upcoming School Sport Australia U15
Championships in Darwin. Good luck Aiden and Jack!
MARK TAYLOR SHIELD TRIALS
Yr 5 and Yr 6 cricketers of a high standard are invited to trial

ISA Round 10 VS Redfield College
In the final round of the ISA season Saints hosted Redfield College on our home court at the Northern Beaches Indoor Sports
Centre.
In the U13s After a close contest in term four Saints were ready with baskets early to Jack Reddy, Daniel Ala and Tom West. This gave
Saints a good start, team defence was strong, Jacob Ratcliff scoring before halftime to give Saints 14-8 lead. Saints increased their
intensity and their lead in the second half with Tom Latu playing strong adding seven baskets. Final Score Saints 46-25, (Top scorers
include Tom Latu 14 points Jacob Ratcliff 12 points, Tom West 10 points).
The U14’s won their last game of the regular season 49-32 against Redfield College. Redfield had improved since the last time the
boys came up against them and Saints had to adjust to their high pressure defence and a physical game. Top scorers this weekend
were Pat Fraser on 14 points and Jake Fisher on 9. Another stand out was Kane Denina who pulled down a huge amount of rebounds
for Saints.
In the U15s Will Wiggins got the team started with a nice basket followed by Luke Perrignon then an Aiden Pashley three
pointer had Saints on the way in a close contest with Sam Porter, Luke Ratcliff and Jack Harris all adding points before halftime.
Saints holding a narrow halftime lead 21-17. Great rebounding in the second half by Jack Harris, Luke Ratcliff and Will Wiggins
had Saints gaining momentum to finish a good win Final Score Saints 42-32 (Top scorers include Sam Porter 16 points and Aiden
Pashley 12 points).
The U17’s recorded another victory against a travelling Redfield College. With a10-0 regular season record and first place in the
competition secured, the boys were using this game to prepare for next week’s semi-finals matchup. With Matt Helm playing up in
the 1st V this week, Rory Fowler and Ned Checketts stepped up to fill his play making role on the team. Louie Hudson led all scorers
with 14 points, dominating inside and even hitting a rare 3 pointer. Sam Brooker scored 12 off the bench and Lachlan Channell and
Lachlan Mitrovich were deadly finishing on the fast break.
In the College Firsts Saints came out with focus and gave Redfield little opportunity with a tight defence and well executed offense
seeing all players scoring Saints ahead 22-3 at quarter time. Saints held their intensity in the second quarter with every player playing
well increasing the lead 42-5 at halftime. A small lapse at the start of the third quarter saw Redfield start a mini run but Saints gained
composure to finish the quarter strong 67-16 at the last break. The final quarter saw Saints keep intensity. Final Score Saints 84-22
(Top scorers include Ben Marr 19 points, Lucas Nicol 14 points, Ethan Slack-Smith 13 points, Isaiah Lee 11 points).
IPSHA
This week our IPSHA team’s hosted Arden school at home in the College Brimson centre.
The Year 5’s were in a close contest in the first half play going from end to end with neither team able to capitalise early. After
halftime Saints combined well to record a good win 18-10 over Arden. In the Year 6 match Saints came out firing. Joseph Chilcott
scored a great three point play, Eden Massey and Josh Sergeant combined for good steals, Noa Faatui and Lachlan Cameron
protected the basket well and grabbed big rebounds while Scott Walters taking some strong drives to the basket, Jacob Hansen and
Dylan Richmond created open shots for each other to record a good team win final score Saints 32-21.

2014 Basketball Presentation: A presentation evening will be held tonight, Wednesday 25th February, commencing at 7pm in the
Brimson Centre. This is a compulsory College event and all players are expected to attend.
Manly Warringah Basketball 2015 - Opens: The 2015 Open Basketball season has commenced. All players should have received
a draw. Alternatively draws can be found at http://www.manlybasketball.com.au/portal/. A reminder that all players need to be
appropriately attired in College Basketball uniform. Singlets can be obtained from me in Cascia House. Shorts must be purchased
from the Uniform Shop.

College Cross Country
FOOTBALL (SOCCER)
The annual College Cross Country will be held on Thursday
the 5th March in and around Brookvale Oval. The Secondary
Carnival will take place during period 1 and 2 whilst the
Primary Carnival will be held over periods 3 and 4. The entire
Primary school will attend the carnival and while participation
is not compulsory, every boy is encouraged to have a go and
try their best.
Grading’s
The Secondary carnival will be an optional carnival and only
serious athletes who are participating to their best ability are
asked to take part.
Both the Primary and Secondary representative teams
performed exceptionally well last year and I hope that this year
we have the same amount of athletes compete to make these
high quality teams.

Team grading’s have all been completed accept for one
more session for a select group of 14’s players. A list of these
players that need to attend this session have been placed
on the football notice board for a final / 3rd session. It will be
at Passmore Reserve, Manly Vale this Friday 27th Feb 4:00 –
5:15pm. Students will have to make their own way to this
session.
Teams will be posted Monday at the College on the Football
notice board near the main front College office. Once teams
are up, boys are required to collect a letter from outside the
PE office (located above the Brimson Centre kitchen) which
will list their team players and if the team has a coach or team
manager. Like most teams in the Manly Warringah competition
we require the majority of these to be parents of players. If you
can help out please contact me. Training can only commence
when that team has a coach.
I would like to thank the following volunteers for helping with

Team Selection
The numbers of students wanting to play football in 2015 has
again increased adding to the huge task of team selections.
Ideally we would love to place players in a team they all want to
play in, realistically this is not always the case. Decisions must
be made which most players may be happy about but may
disappoint some. For grading’s we enlist volunteers who have
much experience in football, coaching or playing to help make
these tough decisions. Please keep this in mind when teams
are announced after the grading’s are completed.
Referee Courses
MWFRA has opened registrations for those interested in
attending a referee course this year.
Entry Level courses (minimum age - must be at least 14 before
the end of 2015):
1st March - 8:30 to 4:00 - Open to Juniors only (up to 16 Years of
age)

Parent Help Needed
More than 129 years of history have added to the prestige
of the Riverview Gold Cup Regatta. This year 1655 athletes
competed at the illustrious event. What makes this event
special is not only the rich history, but the famous dog leg
course and the number of spectators who watch from the
banks and even from a number of spectator vessels.
St Augustine’s Rowing has history at this regatta, competing
for 10 years, and over the last 5 years our students have
established St Augustine’s as the most successful School Boy
Four crew. Last year our 1st four won the Sydney University Cup
for this event for the first time, as only the second non-GPS
school since the inception of the race.
This year the challenge was twofold for our four crew.
St Augustine’s crew was not only much younger, they were the
only ones in the field who had raced 20 minutes prior. The crew
of Zac von Appen, Felix Daddo, Dan Samus, Peter Brongo and
coxswain Monty Ravenscroft won the A Final of the 1st School
Boy Fours over Joeys, Newington and host school Riverview by
6 seconds. It was a tremendous performance based on Zac von
Appen’s skill and leadership paired with three young rowers
who gave it all to attempt the impossible.
St Augustine’s Football cannot operate without the help of
parent volunteers.
Coaches and Team Managers: Each team requires a coach
and team manager. Most of these roles will need to be filled by
parent volunteers.
Grounds Co-Coordinator: We are in need of someone to look
after Passmore Reserve field set-up and pack down.

St Augustine’s Rowers winning at Gold Cup Regatta again!
First School Boy Four winners celebrating the Sydney University Cup
established in 1963
Our Yr 10 eight was up against a dominant Shore crew and the
task was to close the gap again to the second ranked Joeys
crew. Also in the final was Newington and Sydney Boys High.
St Augustine’s was seeded on the outside lane of the dog leg
course and rowed a strong race finishing third behind Shore
and Joeys. This race was the first Yr10 league of GPS rowing
and our crew of Bjarne Ungemach, Felix Daddo, Dan Samus,
Peter Brongo, Kieran Riach, Harry Hronopoulos, Zac Alford, Jack
Donkers and coxswain Monty Ravenscroft placed well in the
top ranks.
Another highlight was St Augustine’s best ever performance in
the 1st Yr 9 quads. The crew was up against 8 very polished GPS
crews plus Redlands. In a strong final our crew of Marcus Oates,
Kieran Riach, Patrick Easson, Connor Hopkins and coxswain
Kyle Riach finished second in a great time and only behind the
winning Shore crew.
Zac von Appen and Felix Daddo relieved and exhausted after winning the
1st School Boy Fours over Joeys
In addition, our 2nd Yr 9 crew as well as our two Yr 8 quads
placed 2nd to 3rd in their respective races. For many it was
their maiden Gold Cup race and they rowed well, often
congratulated by the race commentator for their superb blade
work.
With a win, a second and third in 1st divisions, this year
marked our most successful Gold Cup Regatta. It shows the
strength of the St Augustine’s rowing program. Important to
note is that beside the three Yr10 boys in the four, Kieran Riach
Yr 9 and Torben Ungemach Yr 8 filled in to compete in a higher
age group.

BROKEN BAY WINTER TEAM SPORT SELECTION TRIALS 2015
INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
Broken Bay Diocese selection trials for children wishing to be considered to participate at the Polding Area Winter
Team Sport Trials will be held in the sports listed. At the Polding trials a representative team will be selected to
compete in the NSW PSSA State Championships. Further information relating to the Polding Trials please go to:

All teams except 11 years Rugby League are open age. It is therefore expected that the majority of children will be in
yrs 5 or 6. As a guide the selectors are looking for children who display an outstanding ability at the particular sport.
Children turning 13 will not be eligible for selection in NSW representative teams.




Selection in netball and boys soccer is particularly competitive and only those children who have been selected in
community development or representative squads or who play A grade and are of a representative standard will
be permitted to attend.
Where a large number of children attend a trial the selectors will make a ‘first cut’ of players after observation of an
initial skills session. Not all students will be selected to continue with the trial.
Any children who currently play AFL, boys hockey and girls hockey should be encouraged to attend. Schools will
be limited in the number of students they are allowed to nominate for other sports.
In the case of wet weather, schools will be notified of any changes. A recorded message will be available on

Parents please note the following:








Player profile forms must be returned to school sport coordinator at least five working days prior to the
trials. Students must have the school’s permission to participate in the trials. Schools have the right to refuse
permission for a student to attend the Broken Bay trials. The background information is not used for ‘pre-selection’
but assists your school in determining who may attend the trial and the conveners in organising the children for the
trial.
Parents are responsible for all transport and supervision arrangements for their children attending Broken Bay
team trials and Polding trials.
Parents are expected to remain at the venue for the duration of the trial.
Attendance at any training days, if arranged, are compulsory. The team manager will advise of these details if
applicable. Exceptions will not be made for children who are unable to attend because of commitments to another
representative team. They will have to choose whether they are able to make a commitment to the Broken Bay
squad.
The selector’s decisions are final.
Clothing: children are required to wear their school sport uniform or other appropriate sports attire including
protective equipment as prescribed for the sport.
Students must provide their own personal protective equipment.
For rugby league and rugby union: Note that these are essentially body contact sports with some degree
of inherent risk of injury. The wearing of a correctly fitted mouthguard is mandatory in all games and
training sessions. Head gear is highly recommended.
