Page 4 First Sunday of Advent SAN ANTONIO WOMEN CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON DECEMBER 8, 2014 Were you moved? when you saw the recently released photographs of Pope Francis embracing a young armless dancer? 1968 – our way of fostering a culture of inclusion. Since that time hundreds of thousands Brother Knights have volunteered to help make these special athletes know that they are welcomed and important. The Knights of Columbus has pledged $1.4 million to cover the costs of Special Olympics athletes from the US and Canada during their time in Los Angeles for the 2015 Special Olympic World Games. Since 2001 the total amount donated by the Knights at all levels to help those with mental and physical disabilities has exceeded $243 million. On that occasion the pope reminded us that playing sports provides an opportunity and an invitation to foster a culture of inclusion . . . a culture that tends to draw-in those confronted with mental and physical challenges. These are familiar words to members of the Knights of Columbus, who donate millions of volunteer hours and dollars to the Special Olympics since it’s founding in Chicago in Building a culture of inclusion requires the realization that the banquet of life is not reserved only for the planned, the perfect or the privileged. It’s time to take out the holiday sweater because our Christmas Luncheon is just around the corner. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be coming to make your wishes come true.
