What sorts of things do I request in the course of a workday? Donuts, mostly, but that’s not necessarily related to my editorship. Submissions? More time? Help? But 34-across is only three letters. The word “editor” is abbreviated in the clue, so the answer will also be some sort of abbreviation. From the “Down” clues I figure out the first two letters: an S and an A. I still don’t get it. Maybe 30-Down will give me the last letter. “North American shorebird?” Thanks for nothing. I continue with the rest of the puzzle and finally I have it all figured out except that vexing “editor’s request” (and of course the stupid shorebird). Finally I admit defeat. I look up the shorebird to see what it was that stumped me. “Pewee,” as it turns out. That means the “editor’s request” is SAE. What the heck is SAE? I tried looking it up online and in my many “How To Be A Editer” manuals, but to no avail. The nearest thing I could find is SASE, which I recognize as “self-addressed stamped envelope,” an important tool editors use for returning rejected manuscripts to aspiring writers. This is what people mean by “meta,” I think: a crossword clue about an editor, which stumps an editor, who discovers that it is actually an error that an editor should have caught. I’m not blaming the error for my defeat. If I knew my North American shorebirds I would have solved the puzzle. I was beaten by a pewee. Derek Coe, Health Promotion Director November 12-26 marks the National Addictions Awareness Campaign which focuses specifically on alcohol addiction and misuse/ abuse. I know what you’re thinking: we know drinking and driving is bad because we’ve heard it over and over again. While most of us may know this by now, many people underestimate the extent to which alcohol impairs their ability to perform fine motor skills – the skills you need to drive, work or play safely. And to top it all off, it’s common to underestimate how much we have consumed. This means that we think we’re fine to drive after having two drinks, when we’ve actually had three drinks without realizing it. If you’re not sure what I mean, let me draw your attention to what a standard drink is. A standard drink is 12 ounces of beer (341 ml, or a bottle) at 5 per cent alcohol; five ounces of wine (142 ml) at 12 per cent alcohol; or 1.5 ounces of liquor (43 ml) at 40 per cent alcohol. Where we often get confused is when we order a drink, the beer or wine glass we get may have more than one standard drink in it. “Only one drink” often turns out to be more than “only one drink.” T h i s misunderstanding often leads people to have a false sense of security when getting behind the wheel because after all, “I’ve only had two drinks, so I’m good to drive.” This false confidence about our driving abilities unfortunately leads to impairment charges, accidents and, in severe circumstances, death. Please help keep our roads safe and drink responsibly. Find a designated driver, call a taxi, or simply don’t drink if you’re planning on driving. Do you want to know how much you are affected by alcohol? Stop by the Health Promotion office at any time, or have us come to your unit so that you can try out our Fatal Vision goggles. I promise you’ll be surprised! For more information on alcohol or other drug addictions, abuse, misuse and where you or someone you know can go for help, please visit Mental Health, located on the second floor of the CANEX; the Health Promotion office located on the second floor of the Col JJ Parr Sports Centre; or visit www.forces.gc.ca/ wastedtime. HCol Ward passed away October 31at the age of 82 years. He was the squadron’s first Honorary Colonel, serving in that role from 2005 to 2009. John Smith, who was the Squadron Warrant Officer at the time, remembers nominating HCol Ward for the role. “Jack used to be the Operations Officer at 42 Radar Squadron, and he was a charter member of the Air Force Association in town,” Smith said. Since part of an Honorary Colonel’s role is to act as a liaison between the squadron and the community, Smith said, “the fact that he is from here was a big bonus.” “With his background, he could come in and chat with the squadron members and tell them about our history and customs,” Smith said. And as for making connections at mess dinners and military functions, “he knew his way around the table.” “It was like magic, watching him move through a room talking with Generals one minute, and Privates the next. It didn't matter whether it was a formal mess dinner or cold rainy days under canvas, Jack always made the time for anyone and everyone.” Col Frank Ebner, who was CO of the squadron during HCol Ward’s term, agrees. “He provided squadron members with a link to RCAF history,” he said. This “enhanced their dedication to military duty and pride in their community.” “Quite simply, 42 Radar was a more effective squadron as a 784 Wing in Cold Lake. result of Jack's efforts,” Current and former Col Ebner said. HCol Ward’s military experience was an asset at Honorary Colonel conferences, where many participants do not have military backgrounds. “Jack knew exactly what it was all about,” Smith said. “He spoke the language of the military, he knew all the acronyms.” Current 42 Radar Squadron CO Maj Olivier Lefrancois said HCol Ward was handpicked for the position for “his passion, professionalism and leadership.” HCol Ward will be remembered “for his camaraderie and unremitting support to any endeavours undertaken by the squadron,” Maj Lefrancois said. A Service of Remembrance was held on Friday, November 7 at the Air Force Association members of 42 Radar Squadron attended the memorial and served as honorary pallbearers.
