Time to Attack
Dear Friend of Unity,
One of the biggest praises that we thank God for is the addition of the Knight Center and Courtyard of
Unity Christian High School. This addition has been a game-changer.
The addition has blessed our student worship and fellowship. As one student put it, “The Knight
Center has improved our worship atmosphere so much. It is awesome to stand on that stage and see over
200 students worshipping together. It is such a blessing to have this addition.” The Courtyard has been a
community builder for our students and parents. They now have a place to visit during breaks. And after
games and concerts, we now see parent fellowship and conversation last long after an event ends.
The addition has enhanced our fine arts program. The attendance at concerts, musicals, and plays
has dramatically increased. Audiences are comfortable and appreciative of the high quality aesthetics,
acoustics and sight lines for concerts and shows. Our musicians and actors have thrived performing in
the Knight Center.
The addition has strengthened our community relationships. We now host schools from 20 miles away
for assemblies and concerts sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council. Our Knight Center is currently
hosting city residents and guests from around the country for Tulip Festival shows and events. It is with
pride, that we say Unity Christian High School is a community partner.
Yet, there is a challenge that still remains within all of these blessings. We still owe $1.14 million
dollars to the bank. In the next days, we will be sending you a request to help us attack the debt. If you
attend a local church, look for the letter in your mailbox. If you are an alumni and we have your current
address, we will mail you a letter of support. If you are a friend of Unity from a distance, and seek to give
a gift, we ask that you mail us your donation.
We have a lot to be thankful for at Unity Christian. The Knight Center and Courtyard are on our list of
thankfulness to God. Overall, we give thanks for Jesus Christ, our Savior, our Redeemer and our Friend.
He has conquered death and set us free to be His hands and feet.

Honoring Veterans
On Tuesday, November 11, Unity had a special
Veterans Day Chapel Service honoring local men
and women who have served our country. It began
with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the choir performing two selections, Battle
Hymn of the Republic and America the Beautiful.
Lieutenant Cory Van Sloten, who served with the
U.S. Army in Kuwait and Iraq, was the guest speaker. The service concluded with Mr. Larry Wielenga
singing “Bring Him Home” with a slide presentation
of veterans coming home to their families. After the
chapel, students verbalized their thanks by making
a “tunnel” for the veterans to walk through to the
cafeteria where they were offered refreshments.

One Body, One Hope

What are you willing to give up? A morning coffee? An afternoon
Mountain Dew? A week of TV? How about switching out your
supper of meat and potatoes for rice and beans for a week? That’s the
question our students were asked to ponder and then act upon for
Spend Yourself Week, October 13-18.
This year Unity’s faculty and students have partnered with One
Body One Hope to work together with the faculty and students of
the Abide in the Vine school in Liberia. One Body One Hope used
this one week to ask people to “spend yourself ” for those suffering
because of the Ebola crisis in Liberia. Our brothers and sisters in
Liberia have had to give up physical touch, a hug from family and
friends, basic necessities because of shortages within the country, and
the freedom to move within their communities. As a Unity body,
we asked each other to give up something as an act of solidarity for
our Liberian friends. Each morning, students met with their Living
Groups to have devotions together. We followed a devotional set out
by One Body One Hope to help us reflect on what it means to “spend
ourselves”.
Isaiah 58:10 says,
“If you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness
and your night will become like the noonday.”
This week was a week of reflection for our students and staff.
Whether each person was able to give something up the entire week
or not, the atmosphere in our halls that week forced each of us at
some level to contemplate the suffering of those across the ocean. As
we take steps this year to get to know our partner school in Liberia,
things like Spend Yourself week allow us to get to know them not
as strangers in foreign country far away, but as brothers and sisters
united with us in Christ.
Opportunities showcase

The newly formed Unity Christian FFA Chapter is hosting a FFA
Opportunities Showcase on Dec. 6th at Unity Christian High School
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Showcase will feature a keynote
address by former Iowa FFA President Josh Earll. The remainder of
the evening will consist of short sessions of former & current FFA
members from the area who will be sharing their FFA knowledge &
experience.
Since we are just starting a new agriculture program we want to
highlight opportunities by bringing in guests who have inspirational
stories of their involvement in FFA leadership and skill contests,
leadership conferences, and service projects. The officer team at Unity
Christian feel this will be an opportunity for parents, FFA members,
and community members to increase their knowledge of what FFA is
all about.
We have an amazing group of individuals who have volunteered
to present at the event and we are looking for a great turnout of FFA
parents, students and interested community members. The event is
open to anyone who wishes to learn more about what FFA has to offer
Unity Christian High School.

…to senior Tara Tilstra, daughter of Drs. Shawn Scholten
and Bill Tilstra of Sioux Center, for being named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship
Program. Commended Students placed among the top five
percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the
competition. Tara placed in the top 3% of the competition.
These young people from Unity were privileged to earn the right to
participate in the All-State Music Festival in Ames on November 21 and
22. They auditioned in person, by tape, and by selection of their directors.
The concerts will be aired on Iowa Public Television - check their website

Bits & Pieces…
• Seniors Jennifer Droog, Micah Vande Vegte and Emily Wielenga
will represent Unity on the 2015 Tulip Festival Court.
• We continue to host blood drives for the Siouxland Blood Bank thank you to our staff and students who regularly help save lives by
donating blood.
• We hosted an International Student Club activity in October for
our international students. All Unity students were invited for
bowling and the theatre production at Dordt.
• Staff members were recognized at the Hostess Supper for years of
service to Unity: Wayne Dykstra, Principal (5); Cody Harskamp,
Social Studies Teacher (5); Rhonda Van Donge, Spanish teacher
(5), Bob Van Gelder, bus driver (5); Janie Van Dyke, Engish teacher
(15), Nyla Harskamp, bus driver (20), Karl Kaemingk, Technology
director/teacher (25), and Harriet Vander Stoep, assistant cook
(40). We appreciate their joyful and tireless effort working in our
school.
• The Cast and Jazz Band provided very fun entertainment at their
Combo Night.
• All students participated in a Living Group Retreat on a beautiful
day in September. This is a great opportunity for students to get to
know each other as they participate in devotional time and relay
games outdoors.
• Thank you for your attendance at our athletic events and for supporting the Booster Club by purchasing concessions, meals, apparel
and memberships. Thank you to Iowa State Bank, Dordt College,
and Northwestern College for providing tailgate meals at our
football games. Our Booster Club donated $26,750.00 to our cocurricular programs (Academic competitions, drama, music, dance
team, and athletic).
• The Hostess Supper was a great night again - great attendance,
food, fellowship, entertainment and gifts of over $15,000 to help
with the general fund in keeping tuition costs affordable.
• Our dance team performed at home football games and will
perform at basketball games which will include their annual Kids’
Kamp on December 19.
• Sophomore class soup supper date: January 9, 2015

• Chapels this year: Mr. Dykstra began the year with a chapel on our
theme, Mr. Johnston, Summer Reflections (students tell of their
summer mission experiences), Mr. Mouw, Mrs. R. Van Donge,
Pastor Steve Breen, Monica McConnell, Pastor Aaron Baart, Pastor
Verlyn Boone, The Cast, Mr. Ross Enger, Megan Vander Stoep,
Tyler Couperus, chapel on Academic Integrity, Bob Pollema, Rev.
Luke Wynja, and Mr. Kamp.
• Our yearbook students are soliciting ads for the yearbook. If you
have not been contacted and would like to include an ad for your
business, please e-mail [email protected].
• The Student Council has been busy planning the Retreat Day and
a Freshman/senior ice cream social. They raised a gift of $180.00
for Zestos by having a silent auction. The football players placed
their jerseys up for auction and the students who bought the jerseys
could wear them to the game. The Council also planned a pop can
design activity and donated 275 12-packs of pop to Atlas.
• Twenty-seven Unity students attend class at the NCC Career
Academy, Dordt or Northwestern; 6 more do work study or internships off campus. These opportunities are part of their Unity class
schedule.
One to Remember

The 2014 Varsity volleyball season just concluded at the State
Tournament last week. The team finished with a record of 32-6, and
made it to the semifinals of the state tournament, losing to 4-time 2A
Champions Dike-New Hartford. We had a thrilling 5-set victory over
Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the quarterfinals. It was a wonderful way to cap off a very successful season.
Some highlights of the season were finishing 1st at our home tournament, going undefeated in the War Eagle Conference and claiming
1st Place in conference, and going undefeated at the Heelan Classic. Our theme verse for the season comes from Romans 8:37, “No, in
all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved
us.” We tried to focus all season on celebrating the blessings God has
given to our team, in each other as players, our managers, and our
coaches.
We will greatly miss four seniors, who have given so much time
and effort to the volleyball program at Unity. Kendra Kroese, Heather
Schouten, Haley Noteboom, and Jessica Timmermans have strived
to do their best with the gifts God gave them in volleyball, as well as
being strong leaders for our team.
A few of our players have already been honored with some postseason awards. Anna Kiel was named to the 2A All-tournament team at state last week. Anna Kiel, Jessica Timmermans, Allison Timmermans, and Chanda
Zomermaand were named to 1st team All-Conference.
Josie Blankespoor was named 2nd team All-Conference, and Haley
Noteboom was named Honorable Mention All-Conference.
Anna Kiel and Chanda Zomermaand were also named to the Des
Moines Register’s 2nd team All-State Volleyball team in class 2A.

Football 2014

The football team had a successful season where camaraderie was
enjoyed and progress was made toward becoming more competitive
on the field. The coaching staff involved three returning coaches and
three new ones along with an intern studying sports management at
Northwestern College. The Varsity team wanted more wins, but every
game was a fight to the finish in a very tough schedule where two of
our opponents have reached the final four in the dome to fight for a
state championship. The Junior Varsity finished 5-3.
The offense was completely new and involved pass plays that were
47% of all the plays run during the season. The transition to more
passing resulted in 13 different players catching passes in Varsity
games as the team dealt with injuries while also trying different
individuals for the difficult skill of playing receiver. The Varsity team
set new school records for individual quarterback passing yards and
overall team passing yards.
Senior Travis Viet led the team in receiving yards and now ranks
third in school history. Senior Travis Huizenga got off to a great start
until a season-ending injury in the third game. Despite his short
season, Huizenga now ranks fifth in school history for season receiving yards and he set a new school record for average receiving yards
per game in a season. In addition to Travis Viet and Travis Huizenga,
Senior starters Adam Franken and Eric Van Laren will also be missed
on next year’s offense, along with Senior Brady Groeneweg who had
the athletic versatility to play more than one position and Senior Alex
Dorhout who also contributed to the offense prior to his injury.
The defense involved two players setting new school records for
tackles in a season with Junior Levi Schoonhoven and Senior Dominic Byl in the top two spots respectively. In addition to Dominic both
Senior starters Daniel Vreugdenhil and Michael Albert will be missed
on next year’s defense.
The team had the theme of “fight” given that, like wrestling, football is a “combat” sport that involves matching the physical strength
of one young man against another. Football is not war where young
men lose their lives, but it is the sort of sport that could be described
as organized or controlled combat. Our theme of “fight” was matched
with the theme verse of 1 Timothy 6:12 that reads “Fight the good
fight of the faith.” Fighting the good fight of the faith was highlighted
during the devotions that were held prior to the team meals. The
team meals occurred prior to every game and were organized by the
seniors’ parents. The team is thankful for the great nutritious meals
that provided ample energy for the fight.

Monday, January 22, 2015, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our school, ask questions, and meet teachers.
“Reach Out” in December
During the month of December our Student Council is
teaming up with the MOC/Floyd Valley Council for our annual
“Reach Out” day. This event raises money to help those in our
communities with medical expenses. The date for this evening is
Saturday, December 13 at MOC/Floyd Valley.
Rooted in Christ

This year’s group of twenty-five girls came to enjoy and appreciate
each other through the many experiences that they shared during the
season. Practices and meets helped hone their encouragement skills
from mentoring of the freshman in the daily purpose of each practice
to the encouragement of teammates on bus rides and at meets.
A rainy September provided some challenges to getting our
practices in and also resulted in the Le Mars and Sheldon meets being
postponed due to rain or lightning. One morning practice ended
with a satisfied but soaked group that endured a light but warm rain
with a lot of puddle splashing on ...... you guessed it, the Puddle
Jumper Trail.
Nine seniors gave great leadership to the team. The JV team won
six meets while placing 2nd at two meets. They always gave their
best and showed tremendous improvement throughout the season.
The varsity faced stiff competition during the season and really came
together as the season finished winning the War Eagle Conference
meet, placing 2nd at the Unity Invitational, and winning another State
Qualifying Meet at Landsmeer Golf Course. The girls topped the season with a hard fought run at state with an excellent 4th place finish
in 2A. Varsity and alternate runners at the State Qualifying meet and
State meet were seniors Kassidy DeJong, Jacklyn Hoogland, and Tara
Tilstra, junior Alyssa Fedders, and sophomores Katie Broers, Anneke
Knauss, Adri Tilstra, and Jordan Bos. Alternates for the team were
Tessa Schoonhoven, Jennifer Droog, and Katlyn Hoogland.
Individual highlights included Kassidy winning seven individual
meets during the year and Kassidy, Jacklyn, and Tara being selected to
run at the Senior All Star Meet at the end of the season. Tara was also
honored as an academic All State runner.
Our theme this year was Rooted in Christ (Colossians 2:6-7) and
the girls came to realize as the season went on that to bear fruit in the
joys and challenges of running we must sink our roots deep into the
soil of Christ in order to become more disciplined, loving, committed,
persevering, unselfish, patient, and courageous. By the grace of God,
we did grow to become more like Him.

The Journey Will Outlast the Destination

The 2014 Boys Cross Country team placed 3rd at the state meet
on November 1 and had the privilege of standing on the balcony in
Fort Dodge for the second year in a row. Schuyler Malenke and Jacob
Vander Plaats improved their times over last season’s state run. Franklin Reinders equaled his time of a year ago in the cold windy conditions. Christopher De Groot moved up six places from last year and
was right behind his time of last year. Our three seniors Klay Byker,
Andrew Kaemingk, and Brendan Miedema wrapped up our season
push to get back on the podium and rounded out our scoring. As the
experience of the state race fades into the past, the real foundations of
the season will dominate our lasting memories as we all look back on
the 2014 season.
A team of 27 guys literally ran thousands of miles together starting
way back in May. Gathering each Tuesday and Thursday to train and
fellowship throughout the summer. We welcomed nine new freshmen into the cross country family and celebrated beautiful sunrises
and cherished opportunities for prayer together. The juniors and
seniors lead the team by example in practice, classroom and hallways
joking and encouraging the younger guys throughout the season
We ate together so many times that we consumed dozens of gallons
of chocolate milk, bowls full of grapes and endless pans full of coffee
cake and egg bake. We laughed and teased each other as we prepared
for the school day. We gathered for school breaks and ate cookies
and muffins. Every flavor of Dum Dum suckers were sampled and
enjoyed.
We disciplined our bodies to build strength and speed while hydrating and resting between practices. Our wrist watches dictated our
pacing and measured our endurance. Fatigue and injuries sometimes
frustrated our training efforts, but healed with stretching, taping and
rest. We chased each other in circles and down paths in cold weather
and hot to reach our goals.
Winning eight meets and being ranked at the top of the charts in
the state is fun, but the real memories come from the journey. The
fellowship, the hard work, and the laughter throughout the season will
stick with us for a lifetime.

• Thank you again for your attendance and support at:
— the Fall Festival of Music and your gifts for the acoustic shells.
— the lasagna supper which was sponsored by our students who
are going on a mission trip to Nicaragua next summer and your
gifts for that trip.
• Thank you to our coaches, managers, stats and video students who
were part of our fall sports.
• Congrats to:
— Jeff (Buff ) Saeger who was honored at the Iowa State Girls
Volleyball Tournament with the Sportsmanship Award. He was
awarded a $250 scholarship to UCHS. Thanks, Buff, for all you do
for the activities here. You are always behind the scenes and willing
to do anything.
— Elizabeth Van Bruggen for winning the logo contest for the
Sophomore Career Day, “Your Future at Work” that will be held at
Dordt in January.

and machinery to farm our land. We realized nearly 68
bushels per acre and sold the beans for $8.96 a bushel.
This brought in $18,053.00 to our general fund.
