Here is what is on deck for BIG TRIPS being offered by EMHS in the 2014-2015

Bluewater Gulf Islands Sailing Trip

Dates: April 11 -16 , 2015
We will once again be offering the Biology students from EMHS the
opportunity to go to the Gulf Islands of BC for a sailing trip with
Bluewater Adventures. This trip is designed to provide an enrichment
opportunity to personalize the learning of students interested in the
Marine Sciences. Some of the educational topics that will be covered
on the trip include: Ecology, Natural History, W eather, Environmental
Stewardship, Vessel Operation and Navigational Skills.
Who can attend? Students will need to be taking Biology 20, Biology 30 or AP Biology in the 2014-15

school year. The dates planned for the trip are Saturday, April 11 to Thursday, April 16 . We will fly to
Victoria, BC and tour the Gulf Islands between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland conducting
excursions to various islands to explore the environmentally sensitive ecosystems there. Bluewater
Adventures is a board approved service provider and has been conducting school trips for
25 years.
The trip will be able to accommodate 18 students aboard its vessel, the Island Roamer.

First Robotics
FRC Team 4627 is looking forward to an exciting season ahead. Already 22 members are preparing for
the 2015 robotics season. We are currently mastering on-site safety training, testing out new fabrication
skills, and building tables for the new robotics lab, all while forging a strong sense of team and
community. In the near future, the team will be developing their electronics skills and look forward to
working with professional mentors from the community, Rockwell Automation, Gemini Corp, and CN
Rail. These skills are essential to our success in the upcoming challenges.
A new FRC challenge will be announced in January and then, under strict rules,
limited resources, and time limits, our team will be challenged to raise funds, design a
team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program a robot to perform
prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. While the challenge changes every
year and the team strategy is redefined, for the most part the game remains the same.
Since 2012, Manning Robotics has joined the world stage of high school robotics and
engineering. Participating in competitions in Calgary, Toronto and St Louis, it’s
considered the most challenging and rewarding world-wide competition of its kind. At

EM High, we are honored to host the FRC Western Canada Regional April 1-4 2015,
welcoming over 30 teams from around the world. Plan to come out and cheer the team
on! Thank you to our teacher mentors Mr Eady, Mr Johnson, Mr Yetman and Mr
Kiffiak.
Music/Band
The proposed tour for 2015 is to attend the Con Brio music festival at
Sun Peaks Resort, BC. Students attending the festival come from all over Canada
and parts of the USA, with as many as 5,000 participants. The festival also includes

GRIFFIN ATHLETICS NEWS BRIEF
There is a chill in the air as the leaves begin to turn color and before we know it the Fall season of sports will be over.
Our current teams have done an excellent job this year as students have had a great experience on the field and on
the court. Our SR Girls Soccer, Cross Country and SR Boys Football teams have reached the end of their seasons
and our Grade 11’s are already looking forward to next season while the Graduating grade 12’s have left a legacy of
excellence to aspire to.
Some highlights from our Fall season include the JR Boys Football team notching
EM High’s first ever Division 1 victory. As their regular season comes to an end,
the team is poised for a strong playoff run that could very well take them to the City
Championship. Our Volleyball teams are also enjoying a terrific season as they
have competed strongly in a number of tournaments as well as in league play. The
SR boys and SR girls were off to a tournament in Edmonton where lots of team
building and some tough competition was had. Look for our SR and JR Volleyball
teams to head into the playoffs with a spark this season. Our swimmers have
started to get their feet wet this year as they use the month of October to get
organized for the swim season.
As the fall season wraps up, we look forward to the start of our Winter sports that are led by a strong group of Griffin
Basketball players.
We would love to see all of you out supporting our teams! Let’s show these athletes how much we appreciate the
time and effort they spend representing our school. Please consult the CSHSAA website for specific team schedules.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Our Advanced Placement students are motivated and eager to begin the school year. Some of the AP students are
enrolled in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Calculus, European History, English Literature and
Composition, Chinese Language and Culture, Music Theory and Studio Art. Students are learning through inquiry,
intellectual engagement, discovery based activities, labs and authentic tasks. There are several opportunities to learn
more about the AP program at EM High. We have our annual AP Open House which is on November 27th, 2014.

Post-Secondary and Scholarships
We continue to place great emphasis on supporting your student not only with short-term planning, but also with long-term planning
involving their transition out of high school. We are very pleased to have been the hosts of two post-secondary fairs. Over 80 postsecondary schools have visited your school, providing programming and admissions information. Please stay informed of ongoing
special visitors to our school during noon hour. This information is posted on the D2L shell of the Student Center.

Ernest Manning is also very fortunate to have Mrs. Giroux-Wong, Career Practitioner, providing information and support to students
regarding Scholarships and Post-Secondary institutions. She meets with groups of students every Wednesday at lunch on a variety
of topics to support this long-term planning. She is also facilitating workshops every Tuesday at lunch to support resume writing. At
this time we encourage you to check post-secondary websites for application deadlines.
In September, the Student Services team held an assembly for all grade 12 students to discuss steps needed to prepare for
graduation. Students were asked to make an appointment with their guidance counsellor to complete a thorough review of their
transcript. This is an important step in ensuring they meet graduation requirements for Alberta Education as well as specific postsecondary opportunities. It is also the time to ensure all information on their transcript is accurate. Please encourage your student
to book an appointment if they have not already done so.
In October, the Student Services team held an information night for families of grade 12 students. The session discussed
requirements for graduation. The session also discussed what to expect for graduation ceremony and graduation banquet in May.
There was also lengthy discussion about opportunities awaiting students after graduation. Families were familiarized with the Career
Centre’s D2L shell and we continue to encourage all families to go into the D2L shell to review scholarship opportunities and postsecondary links.

Grade 9 and New Student Orientation for Fall, 2015
The month of November, we will be welcoming many special guests to learn about EM High and see first-hand many of our
specialized school programs. Our Open House for new and prospective families is Thursday, November 27 at 7:00 pm. We will be
following the event with our Advanced Placement Open House at 8:00 pm.
Is your child looking for an activity to be involved in during the lunch hour?
Student Services if open during lunch to any student who would like to meet other students while having their lunch. We also have a
variety of board games and magazines to make the lunch hour an enjoyable one.
Grade 10 Update
Student Services held an assembly for grade 10 students, to introduce their guidance counsellors and other people in the building
available to support them. We discussed the challenges of a student’s first semester and encouraged all students to ask for help
from the teachers, their administrators and their counsellors if they were feeling overwhelmed.
Career Technology Centre
The Career Technology Centre will be hosting tours on November 19 and 20. Tours on November 19 will focus on “try-a trade”
opportunities. Interested students can arrange to participate through their guidance counsellor. November 20 will provide an
opportunity for students to have a walk through tour of the facility. The Centre will also be hosting an Open House the evening of
November 20 from 6:00 pm to 8:00pm. More information is available on their website at hppt://www.ct-centre.ca.
Jacket Racket
The Volunteer Club is helping to collect lightly used and clean winter coats, hats and gloves/mitts. Any families wanting to donate to
this activity are asked to drop off these lightly-used and cleaned items to the Student Services office. We will be accepting donations
between Monday, November 3 and Friday, November 7. The Jacket Racket is in need of all sizes ranging from child to adult. Thank
you in advance for your generosity.

build | CBE capital project update
This fall the Calgary Board of Education welcomed more
than 3,700 new students to bring our total enrolment to a
record number of nearly 114,500 students. And we know
the growth won’t stop there. We are expected to grow by
another 15,000 students over the next five years.
As a result, the CBE is facing pressures for more space for
students throughout our system. These pressures are
highest in newer communities that don’t have community
schools and at the elementary level where more than 2,700
additional students enrolled in Grades 1 through 6 this year.
This pressure will continue to be felt in junior and senior
high schools as our students age and move through the
system.
Our role as a Board is to continue to work with the
Government of Alberta to request new schools,
modernization projects and modular classrooms. The
Province determines which schools are funded and how
they will be built.
Currently, the CBE has 31 capital projects underway,
including replacement schools and modernization projects.
We are scheduled to open 17 new schools in September
2016.

The review of the ranking criteria was carried out to ensure
that the criteria were complete and fair. The process
included extensive public engagement which resulted in
several changes and adjustments. Public participants
agreed that the revised criteria incorporated their input and
were non-discriminatory in the method for ranking
communities and projects.
For new K-9 schools, the ranking criteria used includes all
pre-school children, actual distance of the community to the
overflow school and five year future community growth.
This data is updated annually with the most recent city
census numbers.
The review also adjusted the ranking criteria for
modernizations and, for the first time, created objective
ranking criteria for modulars. These criteria can be viewed
on the CBE web site at:

As well, the Province made two announcements this fall to
partner with the CBE to build additional school projects in
the communities of: West Springs/Cougar Ridge, Saddle
Ridge, Cranston, Aspen Woods, Martindale, Silverado and
Springbank Hill/Discovery Ridge.
The new ranking criteria are now in use by the CBE. A new
modular classroom plan was approved at the Oct. 14 Board
meeting. The CBE will be requesting 28 modular
classrooms for 11 schools across the system. New school
and modernization requests will be presented in the ThreeYear School Capital Plan in the spring 2015.
The government also provided funding for modular
classrooms for Westgate School, a new south Calgary high
school and major modernization projects at James Fowler
and Lord Beaverbrook high schools.

Updated Ranking Criteria for Capital Projects
This spring the CBE carried out a review of the ranking
criteria to be used for school capital planning. Each year the
CBE submits plans to the Province for three types of capital
projects: new schools, modernization of existing schools,
and modulars. The CBE ranks the priority of each of these
projects and submits the plans to Alberta Education for
