Cauthen beat subsequent Cox Plate winner Shamus Award (Snitzel) in a Listed race during the 2013 Melbourne spring when trained by New Zealander Andrew Campbell. He was transferred to another Kiwi, Trent Busuttin, who was based in Melbourne this spring, but failed to live up to expectations in two starts. The New Zealand connection has continued with ex-pat Sargent, who now trains at Randwick, in charge for his next campaign. “Cauthen had the same wind operation as So You Think,” Sargent said. “He seems to have come through it well but we haven’t put him under any pressure yet. “The aim is to get a Group One with him next year. He has the ability and now we know he had an excuse.” Sargent is also looking forward to the return of Group One winner Kirramosa (NZ) (Alamosa) who has had problems of her own. The winner of the 2013 VRC Oaks, Kirramosa missed the autumn with a leg problem and her Caulfield Cup bid was halted when she performed badly in the Caulfield Stakes. “She has been on the treadmill and will be back in early December,” Sargent said. “We will look at all the options for her.” Thunder Lady (NZ) (Mastercraftsman) just failed to Continued on page 3 Proudly promoting the New Zealand thoroughbred to the world www.nztm.co.nz NZTM News 3 MONDAY 1 DECEMBER 2014 Sargent looking ahead to Cauthen’s Autumn (Continued from page 1) emulate her stablemate when second in this year’s VRC Oaks and her return to the stable has been delayed. “She was getting ready to come back in but she had a temperature for four days so there’s about a week’s delay in her return,” Sargent said. “Neena Rock is also due back and she will get ready for the Coolmore Classic and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes in the autumn. “They look like they will suit her.” Neena Rock (Fastnet Rock) is another horse Sargent has inherited from New Zealand with the aim of securing a Group One win to boost her value at stud. She is by Fastnet Rock and her great grand dam is the champion United States mare Miesque, the winner of two Breeders’ Cups. Neena Rock had four starts during the spring with her best result victory in the Group Three Angst Stakes in October. AAP TURF IFFRAAJ - His 3YO’s are flying! The duo currently sits atop the national trainer’s premiership ladder and expectations were high they would extend that lead however it wasn’t until Sakhee’s Soldier (NZ) (Sakhee’s Secret) continued his meteoric rise to the elite level with his victory in the feature Gr. 3 event on the day that those expectations were fulfilled. The win of promising mare Sports Illustrated (NZ) (Fast ‘N’ Famous) over 1400 metres in the last race on the card added icing to the cake with the four-year-old mare signaling she has more wins in store during this campaign. “We had eight runners in on Saturday and early on we just couldn’t take a trick however as it worked out we managed a couple of victories so it was a good way to finish the day,” noted Forsman. “Sakhee’s Soldier provided a great result as we thought he might struggle against Veyron if the tempo was slow but there was some pressure on through the middle stages which played into our hands and he finished off really well. “Sports Illustrated has really strengthened up during her Sports Illustrated (NZ) (Fast ‘N’ Famous) and Opie Bosson are a study in power and precision as they head to the winning post at Ellerslie Proudly promoting the New Zealand thoroughbred to the world www.nztm.co.nz 5 NZTM News MONDAY 1 DECEMBER 2014 Day ends well for Cambridge team break and the form around her first up run was strong so we did expect a good performance from her.” Described as a “bulldog” by rider Opie Bosson, Sports Illustrated showed she will be a force to be reckoned with in any upcoming assignments as she powered home to beat the highly rated Ultraviolet (NZ) (Darci Brahma). “She’s a big rangy mare and we tried to get her up to a middle distance during her three-year-old season but I do think she is better suited as a miler so that’s where the focus will be with her this time in,” said Forsman. “She has really strengthened nicely and her run on Saturday was very good as she was wide for a good part of the journey and she extended beautifully with a powerful sprint to get the win. “We will see how she comes through the race but at this stage we are looking at the Group Two fillies and mares race at Te Rapa on Waikato Cup day for her next run.” Forsman was also delighted with the performance of promising three-year-old Ambitious Unicorn (NZ) (Pins) who finished close up in third in the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial earlier in the day. “He just doesn’t know much about the racing game at present so to run third behind some very promising types with more experience augurs well for him, especially as it was his first attempt at Ellerslie,” he said. “We’ll sit down and work out where to go next with him but he does hold a nomination for the Group One Levin Classic so that will be in our minds when we do work out a programme for him.” - NZ Racing Desk Proudly promoting the New Zealand thoroughbred to the world www.nztm.co.nz 6 NZTM News MONDAY 1 DECEMBER 2014 Rasa Lila sets up treble for Colgan Vinnie Colgan racks up the first leg of a treble on Saturday with impressive mare Rasa Lila (NZ) (Darci Brahma) her breeder and owner, Sir Peter Vela, Rasa Lila was having romising four-year-old mare Rasa Lila (NZ) (Darci her third start in New Zealand after doing her early racing Brahma) provided the first leg of a winning treble for from the stable of David Hayes & Tom Dabernig in Victoria. top rider Vinnie Colgan at Ellerslie on Saturday when “We knew David Hayes had a good opinion of her but she she displayed an electric turn of foot to capture the More FM probably wasn’t quite strong enough in her first campaign 2100 and serve notice she could be a genuine lightweight over there but since she has come back and had a good contender for some of the major staying features later in the break over the winter she has really strengthened up and has summer. gotten better each start she has had this time in. Co-trainer Julia Ritchie was delighted with the win and “She’s such a super horse to do anything with and she has the assessment of the mare by Colgan when the combination bounced through the run beautifully so we have to sit down returned to the winner’s circle after the race. now and work out where to go with her. “Vinnie was full of praise for the win as he said she didn’t “We do have her nominated for both the Wellington and get a lot of luck during the race and had to barge her way into Auckland Cups however the first priority will be to get her a gap in the home straight before she unleashed a really good through the grades as she will still be eligible for a rating 75 sprint to get up and win going away at the finish,” she said. “She had gone two nice races to start this campaign but race after that win. “We’ll work out a programme with Gary (Cossey) but it is she is looking for more ground so that’s why we stepped likely she will have another run within the next two weeks as her up to the 2100 metres and she did exactly what we were she still has plenty of improvement in her.” hoping for.” - NZ Racing Desk Sporting the familiar blue and white hooped colours of P Proudly promoting the New Zealand thoroughbred to the world www.nztm.co.nz NZTM News 7 MONDAY 1 DECEMBER 2014 Successful Central Districts raid for Pukekohe team Robbie Hannam guides Courtmaster (NZ) (Mastercraftsman) to his maiden victory at Wanganui P ukekohe trainer Louise Saunders and partner Alwin Tweedie made a successful raid on Central Districts racing at Wanganui on Saturday although it was Courtmaster (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), the travelling companion and younger sibling of their main hope Mato Grosso (NZ) (Captain Rio) that produced the winning result for the pair. However the maiden win for the son of Mastercraftsman wasn’t without expectation after he had produced an eyecatching run for third on debut behind the well regarded Ambitious Unicorn at Awapuni earlier in the month. “We had trouble finding a suitable race up here for Mato Grosso so we decided to take him to Wanganui as the mile there suited him perfectly as he does tend to go a little better when he is racing on left-handed tracks,” explained Tweedie. “Courtmaster had done really well after his debut run so we put him on the float as well as we thought another trip away could be the making of him. “He was a little unlucky behind Ambitious Unicorn, who looks like a serious racehorse, as he got a bump before he finished off well for third so we did think he was in with a chance on the weekend. “We were lucky enough to get the services of Robbie Hannam who rode him beautifully just off the speed and got him home nicely in the straight. “He does look quite promising and we think he will only get better as he goes over more ground.” Courtmaster holds a nomination for the Gr. 1 New Zealand Derby in March but Tweedie is the first to admit there is a lot of water to go under the bridge before then. “They are only three once so you have to have a go if you can but at this stage we will just take him along quietly and see how he progresses in his next few starts,” he said. “We do think a fair bit of him so we would like to have a crack at one of the nice three-year-old races at Ellerslie during their Christmas Carnival.” Unfortunately the winning luck for Saunders and Tweedie didn’t last for their other stable hope in Mato Grosso who finished a narrow fourth in the last race on the card before being subsequently promoted to third after an enquiry. - NZ Racing Desk Proudly promoting the New Zealand thoroughbred to the world www.nztm.co.nz MAKFI dubawi x dhelaal • The World’s Joint Champion 3YO and Joint Champion Miler of 2010 • Rated above the likes of Zenyatta, So You Think, Black Caviar, Rip Van Winkle, Goldikova and Starspangeldbanner • First crop northern hemisphere runners include 13 winners & 7 placegetters from 29 runners, including sensational colt Cornwallville and stakes performer Czar • Southern hemisphere yearlings sold up to A$200,000 in 2014 • 2014 Service Fee: $17,500 + GST payable 1 June 2015 Contact Gareth on +64 272 929 089 or [email protected] www.westburystud.com NZTM News 9 MONDAY 1 DECEMBER 2014 NZ STALLION AWARDS The Centaine Award STALLIONS The Dewar Stallion Trophy EARNINGS STALLIONS Savabeel EARNINGS O’Reilly $3,913,556 $2,647,461 Savabeel $3,485,284 Zabeel $2,120,020 Zabeel $2,511,716 O’Reilly $2,056,660 Pins $2,456,295 Captain Rio $1,114,311 Keeper $1,964,761 Thorn Park $1,097,760 Elusive City $1,935,127 Pentire $1,096,479 Thorn Park $1,846,462 High Chaparral $1,034,993 Darci Brahma $1,824,500 Pins $1,010,275 Pentire $1,518,221 Darci Brahma $970,170 Captain Rio $1,372,640 Yamanin Vital $943,900 Criteria: Sire whose progeny have accumulated the highest combined stakes earnings in Australia & New Zealand Criteria: Sire whose NZ-conceived progeny have accumulated the highest stakes earnings worldwide The Grosvenor Award STALLIONS EARNINGS BEST PERFORMERS Turn Me Loose EARNINGS Iffraaj $679,750 $311,000 O’Reilly $657,655 O’Marilyn $90,500 Darci Brahma $611,935 Darci’s Dream $93,625 Keeper $553,263 Locket $58,570 Pins $530,385 Antonio Lombardo $65,375 Savabeel $499,745 Costume $156,250 No Excuse Needed $425,897 I Do $234,750 Thorn Park $357,490 Ryan Mark Colombia $293,150 Addictive Habit High Chaparral $292,530 Soubrettes $75,000 $187,500 $80,310 Criteria: Leading Sires by Earnings in New Zealand Proudly promoting the New Zealand thoroughbred to the world www.nztm.co.nz NZTM News 10 MONDAY 1 DECEMBER 2014 NZ Bred Winners IN HONG KONG NOVEMBER 26 Horse & Breeding BREEDER WIN IT (NZ) 2008 by Towkay (AUS) out of Justice Supreme by Justice Prevails (AUS) S F Heung & K L Leung; Waikato; NZ RACE Sales Details HKJC Dumbarton H. 1650m.
