Bloodstock One Thousand Guineas.
Platinum Witness had opened her winning account just
last month when successful in the Listed Armadillo Stakes and
she then finished fourth in the Group One New Zealand Two
Thousand Guineas.
“Last Saturday she was a bit above herself and raced
keenly,” Latta said. “We decided to ride her a bit more patiently
this time.”
Platinum Witness appreciated the waiting tactics and, after
settling back of midfield, came wide on the turn then finished

finishing third.
The filly is raced by long-time stable clients Lincoln Farms
and Neville McAlister and was a $55,000 Karaka purchase on
their behalf by Latta.
“They are always cheap afterwards,” she said. “This filly has
always showed a lot of ability and we had her set for this race
for a long time.”
Winning jockey Darryl Bradley has enjoyed a long and
successful association with Latta and her owners and he was
delighted to repay them for their ongoing support.
“It’s absolutely amazing,” he said. “To win for Lisa Latta,
Neville McAlister and Lincoln Farms and John Street is a great
thrill.
“Turning in she was travelling really well and Darci’s
Dream kicked, but Platinum Witness was too strong over the
concluding stages.”
The shock of the race was the failure of O’Marilyn (NZ)

money would have been edgy before the turn.

ECLIPSE STAKES WIN THE RESULT AS
BEACH WORK ADDS ZEST TO ZABISCO
The angle is deceptive and there’s only a nose in it, but Zabisco (#9) has snatched victory in the Eclipse Stakes from Pheidon.
T
he metamorphosis under trainer Darren Weir was
completed for Zabisco (NZ) (Zabeel) when the sevenyear-old entire produced a career-best performance to
land yesterday’s Group Three Eclipse Stakes, over 1800 metres
at Sandown.
After spending time in the care of several trainers in his
career in New Zealand and Australia, Zabisco was having his
third start for Weir, who explained that the galloper had spent
a lot of time at Warrnambool after suffering a slight setback
after his second run for the stable and did a lot of beach work.

“Big thank you to all the staff down at Warrnambool,” Weir
said. “They’ve done all the work with him.”
Enjoying a perfect ride under man of the meeting Kerrin
McEvoy, Zabisco was waited with off a solid early speed
before being produced to challenge halfway up the straight,
wearing down Pheidon (Al Maher) to score by a half-head
with Extra Zero (Danzero) a neck away third.
“He’s got to settle back and you’ve got to produce him late
and just save him for the last furlong,” Weir said. “Kerrin did
that terrific today.”
Weir said it had always been his plan to get Zabisco to the
Eclipse Stakes and he felt that, although the horse was now
getting to the veteran stage, there was plenty of mileage left.
“I think he’s a horse who will get over ten furlongs,
especially the way he hit the line today.
“He might be a good horse for the Tassie carnival. It might
be something to look at – or even Brisbane down the track.”

a Lazarus-like comeback

The Hunterville stayer was literally

ROGERSON JUVENILE RUN CONTINUES
AS JACQUETTA WINS WELCOME STAKES
G
raeme and Debbie Rogerson believe their remarkable
strike rate with the younger members of their
Tuhikaramea operation could have been even better.
The husband and wife team have won eleven of this
season’s thirteen two-year-old races and saddled the runnersup in the other two.
“It was disappointing that the ones that got beaten had
no luck,” Graeme Rogerson said. “We’ve got a good system.”
Jacquetta (NZ) (Keeper) has joined her stablemate and
Listed Wellesley Stakes winner Maritimo (NZ) (Pins) as a black

The daughter of the Pins mare Henriette – a dual winner in
Australia when trained by Rogerson from his Randwick base
– posted her third victory in four starts on the course when
she defeated Peach Cove (NZ) (Buffalo Man) and Outlaw Kate
(Exceed And Excel).
“She’s a lovely filly; she doesn’t pull and only does what
she has to,” said Rogerson, who also bred and part-owns
Jacquetta.
Rider Chris Johnson urged her to the lead on
straightening and she never looked in danger of
disappointing the favourite backers.
“She hit the front a long way out and she’s still pretty
green but she held them quite well and won nicely,” he said.
The stable also won the previous event, the Mohua
Premier Handicap, with Cosmic Cube (NZ) (Dehere), who
had no favours when unplaced in Wednesday’s Group Two
Coupland’s Bakeries Mile.
“Another horse ran into
him and pushed him onto
the heels of another one,”
Rogerson said. “He’s a pretty
good horse.”
Cosmic Cube turned his
luck around yesterday when
he powered away over the
closing 200 metres to score
by four lengths from the
southern pair of El Chico
(NZ) (Stravinsky) and Go Go
Dingo (Testa Rossa).
“He’s a nice horse and
was down in the weights,”
rider Matt Cameron said.
“He proved how good he is
today.”
The sweet-travelling Jacquetta comfortably holds off the challenge from Peach Cove as veteran mainland
jockeys Chris Johnson and Terry Moseley contest the finish of yesterday’s Welcome Stakes at Riccarton.

TALENT AND CLASS IN TAURANGA WIN
Through driving rain on a deteriorating track, Mark Sweeney punches Fay Fay along the rails to a surprise win in the Tauranga Stakes.
T
he training talents of Trevor and Martin Cruz were
showcased yesterday by the outstanding return to
racing of Fay Fay (NZ) (Falkirk), the Cambridge-based
brothers producing the former Group One Hong Kong Derby
winner for an emphatic victory in the Group Three Stella
Artois Tauranga Stakes.
“Two and a half months ago we considered retiring him –
even getting him to the races is a victory in itself,” Trevor Cruz
said.
“We completely re-worked his training regime so as not to
pressure his joints and we have to be very careful with what
we can and can’t do with him.
“We didn’t really have any expectations with him here as

he hadn’t raced for a year and a half, but we did have him
relatively fit and he is a class horse.”
Bred by Wanganui couple Peter and Barbara Smith, Fay
Fay was originally sold at Karaka in 2009 for $13,000 and is
now back home as the winner of nearly $2.5 million.
“To be honest, when horses return from Hong Kong it’s
either because of injury or they’re not competitive anymore,”
Cruz said.
“We were actually using this race as a lead-up to the
Zabeel Classic so he has exceeded all our expectations – it’s
very satisfying.”
Fay Fay settled off the pace in a small but select field and
when runners fanned out in the straight rider Mark Sweeney
angled him toward the fence and the seven-year-old dashed
home to win by half a length.
“The other question mark we had about him was the
ground – it never gets that soft in Hong Kong,” Cruz said.
Julinsky Prince (NZ) (Darci Brahma) also got to the line
strongly to snatch second money off the favourite I Do (NZ)
(No Excuse Needed) who, although caught wide in the early
stages, had every chance.

“He just keeps lifting,” Vandyke said. “If you had told me
at the beginning of his preparation he would be winning a
benchmark 80 on a Saturday I would have laughed.
“He was only a maiden last preparation and now he is
bullying his way into the better races.”
Sent out the $2.45 favourite, Church Boy raced handy to
the lead under Blake Shinn and assumed control in the final
stages to beat Abbasso (Encosta de Lago) by a comfortable
1¼ lengths.
Vandyke said Shinn had been an integral part of Church
Boy’s education.
“Blake has been the making of the horse,” he said. “He has
managed to keep him relaxed and he was very calm going to
the gates.
“The horse can hit a flat spot in his races and he did that
again in the straight but he picked up again and dug deep.”
For his part, Shinn deflected the praise to Vandyke.
“David has placed him well and he is taking really big
steps,” Shinn said. “He is a horse of the future.”

Ridden by apprentice jockey Mohd Firdaus, the five-yearold had to do it the hard way from his outside gate, jumping
right onto the bridle to match motors with Red Dawn before
raising the ante at the top of the straight.
While many thought Red Dawn was waiting for that
moment to shake him off, Amazealot swept past to hit the
front then proved an obstinate adversary, hanging on to
win by a head. Such was the superiority of the first two that
the third-placed runner, Angry Cat (Estambul), finished four
lengths astern.
Raced by the Tivic Stable, Amazealot was having his third
success from nine starts for stakes earnings that have just
tipped over the S$100,000 mark.

Trainer Sonny Yeoh said Amazealot was a gutsy

the Singapore Turf Club for their outstanding work on the

“He’s a nice horse but has had a few problems with his

they actually had to cut his vocal cords,” said Yeoh.
“Red Dawn was the horse to beat and the plan was to run

News in Brief
Fatboy doubles up
After six previous outings had returned four placings, a
drop back in distance and class helped the Theo Kiesertrained, Mark Ewe-ridden Racer King (NZ) (Pins) claim
his first win in the S$75,000 Restricted Maiden over 1000
metres at Kranji on Friday night.
Kieser said a switch back to Polytrack after two misses
on turf also contributed to the win and he would now see
how the handicappers treated his horse before deciding
on his next race. Although taking seven starts to record
his first win, Racer King – an $85,000 buy from the Select
Firdaus, having his second winning ride aboard
Amazealot, was punching the air in delight on returning to
the winner’s enclosure.
“The plan was to jump well and try to lead but when I saw
Red Drawn was faster I just dropped off and sat behind,” he
said.
“I made an early move at the top of the straight as I
wanted to get the first run and let him chase us. I knew he
was coming back at us in the straight but my horse kept on
for a very brave win.”
