Redd Foxx Says His Humor
In CBS Series Is 'Light Blue'

LOS ANGELES — "Every comedian in the world is dirtier than I
am," Redd Foxx told TV critics
meeting here recently. Foxx, who
returns to television next month in
"The Royal Family" on CBS,
quipped, "If anyone here thinks I'm
dirty, go see Andrew Dice Clay."
The "king" was sitting next to his
"queen," Delia Reese, who plays his
wife in the family comedy slated for
CBS* 9 p.m. time slot on Wednesdays
this fall.
Foxx, who saves his risque material for nightclubs, uses the phrase
"mother father" when he wants to
vent his anger in the series, hence
the reason for a discussion about its
propriety in a family comedy.
But he needed no defense with the
critics, and, besides, he had Reese to
run interference. "It's part of the
character," she insisted. "It's part
of Redd, and I think it's a wonderful
way to do it."
"I used to be blue; now I'm light
blue," said Foxx.
"I had to work the ghettos because they said I was dirty," he recalled. "To work at Basin Street
East in New York once I cleaned up
my act; I got no laughs. Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme were in the
audience; they knew what I was
known for. When I came offstage
Steve said, 'Why don't you be yourself?' I said, 'OK,' and the next show
I went on as Redd Foxx. The owner

came over to me and said, 'You're
dirty, I can't have you here.'
"I said, 'I'm dirty? Maynard
Ferguson is working here; you've
got MF all over the bandstand.'"
On his hit NBC series "Sanford
and Son" (1972-77), Fox couldn't say
"hell" or "damn." He said it took
him two years to be able to say
"nigger."
"I had to fight for it because it
was honest. ... Why not be honest on
television? Why should cable outdo
networks by being honest?"
The reason why Foxx's character, Royal, a retired postman living
in Atlanta, is so irritated is because
just when he and his wife, Victoria
(Reese), are alone and ready for a
second honeymoon, they are invaded
by their recently separated daughter
and her children. Their peaceful
household, where Royal likes to see
himself as "king," quickly becomes
a combat zone.

Antonacci-produced series stresses
the warm and still passionate relationship between the married cou-
ple, who've been together 40 years.
It also reflects the long-lasting
friendship of the two stars.
In fact, Reese is so solicitous of
Foxx that when he can't hear a
question, she patiently turns and repeats it to him.
"He doesn't have to explain himself to me, and I don't have to explain me to him,'' she said.
"We both come from the slums that was before the 'ghetto.' "
Will Reese sing in the series?
"I must sing," she said. "I'll get
it in there somehow ... Victoria is
part of the church choir, and she's a
community worker. She is a person
who sings."
Added Foxx: "That was the first
thing I asked for, a piano in the living room so she can play piano and
sing, and I can fake it."
"I'm Redd's biggest fan," commented Reese. "I would walk the
water to go see him."
And what about Foxx - would he
'walk the water' to see Delia?
"Absolutely," he said, "with lead
weights on my feet."
