A WORD FROM OUR PRINCIPAL.…Kacy Pierce
Hello from the finest middle school anywhere!
Thanks to the countless hours our LPMS PTO volunteers put in. Registration, lunch for our staff, supply sale, and a fantastic Grill and Greet
all went smoothly. Words are not sufficient to thank you, our parents,
and PTO for a fully stocked supply closet for teachers, as well as start
up money for teachers. I speak for the staff when I say that we all
know we are blessed to be a part of the LPMS community.
Football, Cross Country, and Volleyball seasons have ended, but
LPMS continues to be a very busy place: Red Ribbon Week, Basketball practice for both boys and girls teams has begun with the first
game scheduled against Hewitt November 12, Indoor track, and a new
sport, Bowling, report cards went home October 17, eighth grade
students took the Explore test October 21, Veterans Day Assembly
November 5, and Veterans Day Holiday is November 11. The all
school Fall Party will be held December 12 to coincide with a home
basketball game against Pizitz. More information about the party will
be coming soon from the LPMS Student Government Association.
Thank you for keeping our students safe during carpool drop-off and
pick-up. Please remember that we have 2 drop-off and pick-up points
at LPMS: the front, main entrance to the school, and the back gym entrance. Thank you to the City of Vestavia Hills and the VH Recreation
Department for allowing us to use their entrance off of Sicard Hollow
Road as a short cut to LPMS. If you drop off at the gym entrance and
come via Sicard Hollow Road through the Rec. Center fields, please
be reminded that you may no longer use the road through the Rec.
Center fields as an exit from LPMS. When dropping off at the gym
entrance, please continue on to Liberty Parkway then on to Sicard
Hollow Road.

On behalf of the Liberty Park Middle School PTO, I would
like to welcome those who are new to the LPMS community and encourage all of our families to get involved in our
school by joining the PTO. As past and present members
of the community can attest, middle school represents a
time of tremendous growth, exciting changes and possibilities, as well as new challenges for our children. We are so

We learned a lot from the Lockdown experienced at LPMS
Tuesday, September 30. I first want to commend our students
and teachers on the outstanding job they did under very
stressful circumstances. As a result of what we learned, we are
currently reviewing and revising Lockdown procedures at
LPMS. My priority continues to be the safety of our students
and staff.
Thank you parents for all you continue to do to support our
school and our students. All of us working together as a team
is what truly makes LPMS a special place for our students.

involved, volunteer, and be a part of this fun ride through middle
school. These years will be gone before you know it.
As LPMS PTO members, we help raise money, gather friends and
family to many magical events, and bring our school together to
create a safe home away from home environment. The LPMS
PTO exists primarily to support the teachers and staff in educating
our students. To that end, a key responsibility of the PTO is facilitating communication between and among staff, students, parents,
and the community. Our monthly board meetings enable us to
share information and all members are welcome to attend. Our
monthly board meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at
1pm. Please check the PTO calendar for specific dates or contact
me at [email protected].
Other objectives of the LPMS PTO include providing services that
will enhance the LPMS educational experience and financially
support the activities and needs of the school. Facilitating DQ
spirit nights for our athletics department, choir, and band are crucial to achieve these goals. You will find more information about
these events on our website, in our newsletter, and in the school’s
daily announcements. It is also important that we all support the
goals of the LPMS PTO through participation in the school supply
sale -our only fundraiser of the year. Again, many thanks to Sue
Anne Smith, her family, and team of volunteers who made this
year’s sale the most successful ever! Likewise, I would like to
extend a huge thank you to Jerri Smith and her team of volunteers who planned and facilitated our fabulous Red Ribbon
Week activities and thank Leslie Hornibrook, Kristina Caldwell, and Allison Miller who are sure to make our Veteran’s
Day Assembly special for our students and for our community. As parents, we can all support our core values by actively participating in our children’s education. Big or smallit all matters!
The PTO will be sponsoring and providing assistance for
many more activities throughout the year, so there is still
plenty of time for you to participate! We urge you to get involved by regularly visiting our website, reading the newsletters, attending PTO meetings, and volunteering to help on a
committee or an activity. Upcoming events include our general PTO meeting and Open House featuring the LPMS Band
and Choir on Monday, December 8th. Please plan to attend
and take advantage of winter and spring volunteer opportunities whenever possible! Furthermore, we welcome your ideas,
questions, and concerns at any time. I look forward to continuing my work with Principal Kacy Pierce, Assistant Principal Roger Dobnikar, their staff, and all of you in support of
LPMS and its core values. Let the fun continue and may we
have an incredible 2014-2015 school year!

This year the 8th grade
team hosted the “Metro
South Volleyball Tournament”. Liberty Park Middle School was host to 12
different 8th Grade Volleyball Teams from
across the Birmingham
area in the final tournament of the season. The last time LPMS hosted was five years ago. This
years’ tournament was a huge success and the LPMS community was a great host to the visiting
schools during the two day tournament. Thank you to our fabulous parents, players, LPMS
teacher volunteers and terrific coaches- Joy Bragan and Allison Charles. Thanks again for a
great year!

This year, our Lancer Dancer squad has three great girls! Lauren
Scruggs, Megan Sadler, and Mary Caroline Styles are all seventh
graders here at Liberty Park. These girls practice twice a week, attend all football games, and participate in pep rallys to bring extra
spirit to the school! They will also be performing at home basketball games. The girls work hard and enjoy cheering on the Lancers!

ART
Outstanding 8th Graders:
Eighth graders began the year with an intense
focus on OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING.
They learned to carefully study their subject
and translate each detail they saw onto paper
by creating a range of values and textures.
Students captured the surface of various materials such as glass, wood and metal. The second drawing project added the element of CONTENT into the mix. Students had to carefully capture a likeness
of themselves in a self portrait drawing and incorporate some meaning or emotion into the background. This
year's class is working very hard & it is paying off in some FANTASTIC artwork!
The Spanish program at Liberty Park Middle School introduces students to
Spanish language and culture. We have many fun things coming up in Spanish. El día de los muertos (Day of the Dead) is coming up November 2. This is
a celebration of loved ones whom have passed. We will learn about this holiday through creating decorations that are common in Spanish-speaking countries that celebrate this holiday. Our 8th grade also has a field trip coming up
in February. We will be visiting St. Augustine which was the first Spanish settlement in the United States. We will learn about the history and culture of this
settlement through visiting the fort and taking tours. We will then head on to
Orlando where we will take part in Disney's Mexican program at Epcot to learn
about Mexico's culture. I will be sure to include pictures from our fun activities
and field trip in the next Lancer Link.

MGLA was created to bring attention to Middle Grades curriculum, students, and educators with the goal
of improving education for students in the Middle Grades.

The SGA has had an eventful fall semester. We elected
grade level representatives in September. New 6th grade
representatives are Eigen Escario, Sarah Katherine Gray,
Lexi Green, Chris Munger, and Hudson Wood. New 7th
grade representatives are Eli Sawyer and Rachel Priebe.
New 8th grade representatives are Ronnie Rosales and Nikki
Coalburn. The SGA also helped raise over $2,000 for ALS
research with a school wide ice bucket challenge event.

The Vestavia Hills Board of Education is
offering a Strengthening Families Program
through Impact Family Counseling. It is a
family skills training program designed to
increase resilience and reduce risk factors
for substance abuse, depression, violence
and aggression, delinquency and school
failure. The classes are for Vestavia Hills
City School students, 6th-12th grade and
their families. It is a 3 week program that
meets one time a week for two hours at the
VH Board of Education from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

The 7th grade team attended summer camp at Samford
University and showed that they are an aggressive team
and play hard.
The 2014-2015 Lancer Wrestling team began
practice October 27 and is looking forward to
an exciting season! The Lancer wrestling

This Fall has been an exciting time in the LP Kitchen! We have new faces; JoAnn Ratliff is the new Assistant Manager. Laura Terry is new and she is a huge Alabama fan! We have also been hosting the
crew from the Cahaba Heights kitchen as they are undergoing construction!
Lunch is happening and NEW this year; follow us on Twitter @ LPFoodies.
I post pictures and announce the feature salads and sandwiches we have each week.
We are participating in a FUN year-long program sponsored by Southeast Dairy.
Milk@EveryMeal Selfie Splash is an opportunity for students over the age of 13 to post a selfie with
some representation of dairy milk being included as part of a meal in the photo.
Uploaded photos must be accompanied by the hashtag #MilkAtEveryMeal. More information about

Believe it or not we are testing new products for next year.

The Parent Awareness Committee is pleased to announce an outstanding roster of speakers for the
2014--‐2015 school year. Please mark your calendar with the dates listed below, and plan to join us at
12:00 noon at the Vestavia Board of Education, Room 203. Bring your lunch and invite your friends
to hear professional advice and discussion about issues that affect our children as they navigate their
teenage years. We encourage middle school as well as high school parents to join us.
We are extremely fortunate to have access to local professionals and laymen who graciously volunteer
their time and expertise to address the Vestavia Hills parent community. Their opinions, values and

FOR Club is active for another year. We are, once again, working to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion within Liberty Park Middle School. This club is open to
all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. We meet every Friday during lunch and homeroom in
Mr. Munger's classroom.
FOR Club was formed after LPMS had the great fortune of having Rachel's Challenge at
our school. The goal of this organization is to bring awareness and change to schools
across the country of bullying and compassion. If you would like more information about

We will have qualifying for the
Geography Bee in
November.
The qualifying round will be held in
social studies classes between now
and
Thanksgiving.
The Geography Bee is scheduled for
December 3rd at 8:15 a.m.
If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Well,
the Boy Scouts in Liberty Park proved you don’t
even need a kitchen to cook up some really good
food. A team of Boy Scouts from Troop 76, Liberty
Crossings UMC, recently competed in an outdoor
challenge to cook a signature dish, using only cast iron
Dutch ovens and charcoal.
Congratulations to Scouts Shawn Goyal, Will
Wertheimer, Daniel Perkins and Matt Coleman for
their recent success in the Vulcan District Cast Iron Chef Challenge. These
young men gathered with Scouts from the surrounding district early on a Saturday morning, in the parking lot at Trinity UMC, to cook a dish, using only cast
iron Dutch ovens for the final preparation. Scouts used charcoal to provide the
heat for cooking their award-winning recipes of Dutch oven cobbler and sausage, egg and cheese breakfast casserole. This event draws the best cooks from
among the Scout troops in the Vulcan District, which comprises Boy Scout troops
from Over the Mountain units in the Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, and
Mountain Brook communities. We congratulate these students for coming in 2nd
place overall in the competition.

about his most recent camping trip. Rappeling off the
jagged rock faces of Savage
Gulf, crawling through tight
cave passages at Raccoon
Caverns, cycling on the
Chief Ladiga Trail, or backpacking on the Pinhoti—all
these are trips Troop 76, Liberty Crossings UMC, has
taken in recent months.
Middle school is a great time
to get involved in Scouting.

The 9th Annual Dinner & Diamonds benefiting the Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation will be held at Regions
Field on Saturday, February 28, 2015. Last year this sold-out event drew more than 450 people. This year promises
to be even bigger and better.
Dinner & Diamonds is the Foundation's flagship fundraiser. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the Foundation, and funds the operating budget which ensures the Foundation has the resources it needs
to keep working to support our schools and teachers. The excellence of Vestavia Hills schools continues to define
our community. Your support is critical to our future success, and is deeply appreciated by the citizens of Vestavia
Hills.
Sponsorship opportunities are a great way to support the schools and to reach your customers. Early sponsors,
those that commit by Wednesday, December 15, 2014, will be able to have their name or logo on the invitation that
