VETERAN legislators took
all the top posts on the
Shura Council’s five permanent committees yesterday,
following its final round of
internal elections.

Khalid Al Maskati was elected
unopposed for the ninth consecutive year as the financial and economic affairs committee chairman,
while National Institution for Human Rights president Dr Abdulaziz
Abul was made vice-chairman.
Dalal Al Zayed was elected
unopposed for the fourth consecutive year as legislative and legal
affairs committee chairwoman,
with former MP Khamis Al Rumaihi as her vice-chairman.
Dr Jihad Al Fadhel was elected unopposed as chairwoman
of the services committee and
Nawar Al Mahmood was elected
vice-chairman.
Faoud Al Haji was elected
chairman of the public utilities
and environment affairs committee, with Juma Al Ka’abi elected
vice-chairman.
Former parliament foreign
affairs, defence and national security committee chairwoman
Sawsan Taqawi became head of
the same committee in the Shura
Council – a first for the National
Assembly – while newcomer Dr
Abdulaziz Al Ajman was elected
as vice-chairman unopposed.
They join Shura Council
chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh and
vice-chairman Jamal Fakhro and
vice-chairwoman Jameela Nusaif, who were elected unopposed
last week.
Meanwhile, the top two posts
were also determined for the
Shura Council’s four specific
committees.
Veteran councillor Hala Fayez
was elected as the woman and
child committee chairwoman,

of the council Bassam Albinmohammed as vice-chairman.
Ahmed Al Haddad, who is
also a fresh face on the council,
was elected to the post of human
rights committee chairman with
former MP Shaikh Jawad Buhussain as vice-chairman.
Other roles decided yesterday included members of the
Shura Council to appear on the
nine-member parliamentary executive committee.
The four elected from Shura
were Mr Al Haddad, Ms Al Kooheji, veteran legislator Ahmed
Bahzad, and newcomer Dr Mohammed Al Khuzaie, who will
serve alongside four MPs due to
be elected tomorrow, under the
presidency of parliament chairman Ahmed Al Mulla.
Meetings
The parliamentary executive
committee is responsible for
selecting legislators from both
chambers to take part in international and regional conferences,
meetings and gatherings.
Elsewhere, veteran council
member Abdulrahman Jamsheer
and Ms Al Zayed were elected as
members of the Arab Parliament
and 11 members were selected
to reply to His Majesty King Hamad’s speech at the opening of
the National Assembly last week.
They were Mr Fakhro, Ms Al
Zayed, Ms Taqawi, former parliament second vice-chairman
Shaikh Adel Al Maawada, Dr
Abul, Mr Al Haji, Dr Al Khuzaie,
Mr Bahzad, Ms Al Kooheji, Dr
Saeed Al Yamani and newcomer
Dr Mansoor Sarhan.

n Trial begins
in attack case
TWO teenagers who allegedly
attacked a British motorist while
she was trying to clear an illegal
road block have pleaded not
guilty in court.
The Bahrainis, both aged 18,
have been accused of taking part
in an illegal gathering, assault
and setting tyres ablaze on a
highway near Saar.
They appeared at the High
Criminal Court yesterday, where
they denied the charges.
Their 42-year-old victim told
prosecutors she was attacked
when she got out of her car and
attempted to move the debris.
“I saw around 10 masked people
who set tyres ablaze,” she said in
her statement to prosecutors.
“I got out of my car to move the
debris. I asked them (defendants)
to move the tyres so we can pass
and they started mocking me.
“I told them that I will film them
using my mobile phone and they
did not care. So I took my phone
and started taking pictures of
them for five minutes and they
started jumping up and down
and waving their hands.”
She also described how one of
them tried to snatch the phone
from her while others pelted her
with stones.
n Charity sale set
A CHARITY bazaar to support children suffering from
cancer in Bahrain will be held
on Saturday.
The eighth annual Shahrazad
Charity Sale Bazaar will take
place at the Shahrazad Hall in
Budaiya, from 9am to 7pm.
Donated items including
clothes, books, furniture,
kitchen items, electronics,
plants, games, art works and
antiques will be up for sale.
All proceeds from the sale
will go towards Future Youth
Society’s initiative ‘Smile’,
which helps children suffering
from cancer, and other charitable causes. Donations will be
accepted until Thursday.

n Charges denied
A JOURNALIST accused of
defaming the Shi’ite sect in an
article appeared in the High
Criminal Court yesterday.
The Bahraini denied defaming
the sect and a religious symbol,
subverting public security and
sowing division in society.
Lawyers filed a case against him
after his article was published on
June 22 this year.
The trial was adjourned to January 20 for review.
