A.N.A.C. Appoints Three PhD Scholars to Its’ National Board
Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada is proud to announce the new Board of Directors that
were elected at this year’s Annual General Meeting in Winnipeg, Manitoba, October 4, 2014. For
the first time, three PhD Scholars and three Nurse practitioners were appointed to the National
Board. Dr. Lisa Bourque Bearskin was re-elected as President, Dr. Angeline Letandre was elected
as Research Chair and Dr. Bernice Downey was elected to represent the Ontario/Quebec Region.
Lea Bill, BScN, remains as the Indigenous Knowledge Director; Joanne Cook BN is the director for
Manitoba Saskatchewan. Caroline Chartrand, BScN is the new Leadership Director and the
Education Directorship goes to Rhonda Bennett BScN, a recent graduate. Julie Lys, RN, NP
represents the Northwest Territories. Tania Dick, RN, NP continues in her second year as the
British Columbia/Alberta Director. Ada Roberts, RN, NP is newly elected as the Atlantic Director.
On behalf of the membership this year’s forum brought forth a Resolution No. 2014-1 Subject:
Health Promotion and Prevention of Chronic Disease & Indigenous Populations: the need to
address structural (policy) and knowledge barriers for clients/Indigenous practitioners who wish to
blend western biomedical and Indigenous knowledge and Traditional Medicine (IK/TM)
approaches. That the A.N.A.C. Membership and Board of Directors strike a Board Sub-Committee
to explore and identify a process for the organization to address this issue
The conference was a huge success welcoming health professional from across the country who are
contributing to the advancement, improvement and direction of Indigenous Health in Canada.
