This decoration is awarded to officers and non-commissioned members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have completed 42 years of service with a good record of conduct. This is a rare and wonderful achievement, which all in the room were honoured to witness. Larocque joined the Forces in April 1972 as a gunner. In his first trade, he enjoyed postings to 5 RALC in Valcartier (tw ice) and the Airborne Battery in Edmonton. He also participated in countless exercises and deployments, including Cyprus (1974), the Golan Heights and Ismailia, Egypt (1978/ 1979). Upon his return to Canada, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force as an instrument electrical technician and was posted to 442 Squadron Comox, CFB Cold Lake and CFB Shearwater. While in Cold Lake, he was also deployed to the Sinai with the Multinational Force Organization as an augmentee with 427 Squadron. In 1995, he received his final posting to 14 Wing Greenwood and retired from the Regular Force as a warrant officer in 2002. He joined the Air Reserve the following day, and began work in the Air Mobile Support Equipment shop in the Transportation and Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Squadron. Larocque and his wife, Cathou, own an artisan farm, Silvery Moon Alpacas Farm, where he will be kept busy in his retirement. Art marks modern ‘eyes in the sky’ success Sara Keddy, Managing editor Military history isn’t necessarily old, as portrayed in the latest piece of artwork now at the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum. The Greenwood Art Association recently presented a new painting by Guelph artist Christine Handley to the museum, depicting the early use of Heron unmanned aerial vehicles by the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan. “This is the third painting in what I would like to call the ‘modern’ era,” said association president Brian Handley, “and it brings the art collection up to about 60-plus paintings.” Master Warrant Officer (retired) Steve Dornan was on hand to unveil the painting, as his image is incorporated into the piece as a representative of 14 Wing Greenwood’s role in pioneering the UAV. “UAVs have been on again/ off again in Canada,” Dornan said, “and it’s very apropos we’re doing this event in front of the museum’s Sperwar display – the Heron replaced it.” Over 70 varieties of juice containing nicotine Marie et Guy’s House Bread FRENCH BAKERY 609 Main Street, Kingston (back of Pharmasave) For Christmas we propose: Colonel Iain Huddleston and Master Warrant Officer (retired) Steve Dornan present the newest Greenwood Art Association-commissioned painting to the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum November 4. Leading Seaman E.Jorge, 14 Wing Imaging Dornan started with UAVs about 16 years ago, but it was during the 10-year Afghanistan engagement “we learned a lot of lessons of what not to do, and we moved to a more robust aircraft. Corporate knowledge is now scattered throughout the military, and you will see another UAV.” Dornan knows the use of UAVs made a difference in Afghanistan, supporting Army troops with reconnaissance flights before actual missions went off-base. “They had a distinct use, and I was happy to end my career with this aircraft and making a difference.” 14 Wing Greenwood Commander Colonel Iain Huddleston formally accepted the painting donation, noting the “direct connection” between UAV work in Afghanistan to the kind of surveillance and recognizance work being done now over Iraq by 14 Wing and RCAF aircraft. “We would have made a huge difference and saved lives in Afghanistan with the Aurora, but we got our foot in the door with long range patrol capabilities, the Heron effort and the successes that resulted – and the continued success with today’s Block III Aurora. The missions in Iraq are all based on the start of the Sperwar and the Heron, and we’re now top-of-the-line.” ~ Kouglof ~ French traditional Yule log Vanilla or coffee or chocolate or Grand-Marnier ~ Black forest Yule log ~ Christmas Chocolates Place your holiday baking order as soon as possible. Get so familiar with your equipment that you don’t have to think about it, allowing you to focus (pardon the pun) on the light, composition and the decisive moment. Set a personal goal - pick a theme or subject that excites or motivates you and build a portfolio based on it. Edit your work ruthlessly, and with a critical eye. Share your favourites and seek feedback. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, but be sure to learn from them. Have fun!” Murphy says he doesn’t take pictures with the CAF contest in mind, but he’s pleased the results of his efforts – he drove hours out of his way on a return trip from Central Canada to take pictures of Confederation Bridge - are pleasing to others’ eyes. Whether you’re jetting off to a sunny vacation home or you’ve planned a road trip in your R.V., there are a number of things you’ll want to consider before you head out. Find a travel insurance plan that suits your needs - Many Canadians make the mistake of believing, when it comes to protecting their health while on vacation, simply purchasing travel insurance is enough. Travel insurance isn’t one-sizefits-all and, depending on the policy you’ve selected, there may be limitations. Taking time to purchase a tailored plan that meets your needs will ensure you’re covered in the event of an emergency. Purchasing a new policy? Be upfront. Traveling by R.V. might need more coverage - Nearly one in three RV owners spend 40 nights or more each year in their R.V., yet one in five say they are not exactly sure what their insurance covers. Before heading out on the road, talk to your broker to ensure you understand the limitations of your insurance. Because requirements are different across the border, carrying a higher limit will make sure your family is protected in the event of an accident. And, check the expiry date on your insurance policy/ license plate to make sure it does not expire while you are travelling. Add securing your home to your “to-do” list - Lastly, don’t forget to secure your home before you go. As temperatures drop, the risk for damages like a pipe burst increases. If you are going on a long trip, consider shutting off the water in advance and draining the pipes to avoid major damages. Also, make arrangements with a family member or friend to regularly check all areas of your home, including the basement, shovel your sidewalks, bring in any mail or newspapers and scan to ensure that windows and doors haven’t been tampered with. Many insurance policies require you to have someone checking in on your home as often as every day if you are away from home for more than four days during the usual heating season, otherwise your coverage may become extremely limited or void. With a sunny escape, comes rest and relaxation. To ensure your trip remains stress-free, talk to your insurance broker for more information. the Aurora | 14 Wing Greenwood, NS December 15, 2014 Page 9 Préparer un festin des Fêtes en restant zen la sauce aux canneberges 5. As Canadians, we know these signs all too well: Old Man Winter is back in town. We may be well trained to bundle up before stepping outside, but with frigid overnight temperatures and rising heating costs, it pays to bundle up and seal your home before the deep freeze hits. Follow these simple tips to keep your home toasty warm and your heating bills low. Change furnace filters It won’t work like a dream if it’s not clean. Be sure to replace or clean furnace filters once a month during the peak heating season. Find the leaks and fill ‘em up Since windows and doors are the main culprits for letting hot air escape, an effective way to help minimize these leaks is by applying an insulating film to windows, doors and rooms that get little use. Another option is weather stripping doors and windows. It does come with a little labour, but Cottage Life personality, Colin Hunter, offers some do-it-yourself tips to help minimize the impact and strain on your body. “If you begin feeling aches and pains when working around the house, make sure you change your work environment before it intensifies or potentially causes more serious damage,” says Hunter. “Taking a moment to stretch is It’s Christmas at ,QF Beach Bunny to Snow Bunny Laser Hair Removal A Lasting Gift on Everyone’s List helpful, as well as investing in a proven anti-fatigue mat that relieves stress on the knees and back, such as my favourite, the Stanley Utility Mat. When hot air pools near the ceiling, the clockwise rotation brings it back into the living space. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! sudoku brought to you compliments of patrick’s puzzle brought to you compliments of Caller ID & Voice Mail Chicken & Bacon Ranch Melt • Oven Roasted Chicken • Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki Subway • Middleton - 902-825-5525 • Greenwood - 902-765-2267 December 14 - December 20 solution page 18 You wanted the most popular features included? The first phase of the Building Community Readiness to Reduce Gambling Harm project, funded by Gambling Awareness Nova Scotia, was a survey of the attitudes, beliefs and knowledge of gambling harm as it is experienced by the individuals, families and communities of Kings County. People representing six sectors were contacted: law, education, health, business, involved citizen and government. These respondents have provided some valuable insights. The second phase of the project will occur into the Page 19 December 15, 2014 Christmas Colouring Contest • Concours de coloriage de noël spring of 2015, and depend upon the outcome of the scoring of the surveys; regardless of the findings, KCAGoG will be working to increase community readiness to reduce gambling harm. KCAGoG formed in May 2011 with the vision of “Healthy Communities Free of Gambling Harm.” Volunteers have worked to increase the awareness of gambling harm in Kings County, reduce gambling harm and support local businesses and organizations to decrease their reliance on gambling revenues. Members of KCAGoG want local citizens to have a say in the direction legislation on gambling will take, and they want local government to take ownership of gambling harms. Thrive! Encourages all Nova Scotians to be physically active, and organizers want to make it easier for individuals and families to get involved. 14 Wing Greenwood will offer free swimming (Fitness & Sports Centre) and skating sessions (Greenwood Gardens Arena) in the coming weeks. This is a great opportunity to get out and have fun – give the 14 Wing facilities a try and see if an all-access and discount Community Recreation Card is an option for you and your family, and take advantage of all 14 Wing’s fitness facilities, recreational programs and special interest clubs.
