Loyola College
Loyola College was established in 1925 & became
autonomous in 1978. This Jesuit institution is known
for its academic excellence under the historic University
of Madras & was awarded the “College with Potential
for Excellence” in 2004 & confirmed the same in 2010.
The Department of Scientific & Industrial Research has
recognised Loyola College as a Scientific & Industrial
Research Organisation, the highest research honour for
an Arts & Science College. Recently UGC has
elevated Loyola College to the status
of “College of Excellence” for the
period from April 1, 2014
till March 31, 2019.
Department of Chemistry
The Teaching of Chemistry in Loyola College was
started in 1926 as their optional subject for the
intermediate course. B.Sc. & M.Sc. degree course with
chemistry as the main subject was begun in 1938 & 1958
respectively. Ph.D. programme was started in 1949.
Presently there are 14 teaching staff & 7 non-teaching
staff in the department. Of the 14 teaching staff, 11

guides under whom more than 40 scholars are registered
for their Ph.D. degree. More than 77 scholars have
obtained their Ph.D. The Doctors of Philosophy have
published more than 1000 research papers. The areas of
research being carried out in the department are
co-ordination, catalysis, materials, bio-organic,
bio-inorganic & computational chemistry.
