This year, we will celebrate 80 years of service to our community. Who
knew that such a seemingly small decision by seven community members
would have such a great impact
upon our city? From storytimes and

a long, thought-provoking novel or a fast-paced adventure story, there is
no better place or time to curl up with a book than

books to outreach services and
computers, the library has been
a critical part of this community.
Throughout this year, we invite you
to take a journey back to 1935 with
us. What was Euclid like in 1935? What did families do for entertainment?
Our Winter Reading Program starts January 20
and continues through February 28, when you are
welcome to stop by our Wrap-Up program. On
Saturday, February 28, we’ll gather around the
library’s fireplace for tea or cocoa, a free book and sharing
what we’ve read this winter. Stop by the Information Desk
for more information. Sponsored by the Friends of the
Euclid Public Library!
What was the popular style of dress for women and men? Besides the
Social Security Act, what other important world events occured? Lastly
and most important, what was the most popular book to read?
In 2015, not only will we take a walk down memory
lane, but we will continue to provide innovative and
award winning programs, services and materials
to meet your needs! In 1935, families would have
enjoyed checking out the new Little House on the
Prairie book. Now, in 2015, families still can check
out the classic Little House on the Prairie or enjoy downloading books,
movies and music to their computer, smartphone or eReader device.
Euclid Public Library is pleased to offer you a new online streaming service
GEEKing Out!
Everyone has something they are passionate about - and that is what
you “geek!” Believe it or not, geek is a verb. It’s an action word that
describes “what you love, enjoy, have an intense passion for.” It also is
“what you express interest in, have a large amount of
knowledge of and what you want to promote.”
Each of us geeks something different - maybe hip
hop music, gardening, flying model planes, baking
or any variety of other interests. Of course, we
geek libraries! Public libraries seek to empower
everything you geek. The library is the most
important resource for millions of Americans to find
information and support material for everything we
geek. Get your geek on, use the library and share
what you geek!

Euclid Public Library Foundation
Outreach Services Van
Our residents just passed an operating levy that will keep the library
stable for the next five years, but a large expense like a new van for
Outreach deliveries would add stress to
the library’s annual budget.
Each month, our Euclid Public Library
Outreach Services provides the following
services to our Euclid residents who are
temporarily or permanently homebound.
The van that we have had for this service
has been used hard for well over a decade.
For this reason, the Foundation board
has made the decision to help the library
gather extra funds to provide a reliable
vehicle to make these deliveries. Any
resident, no matter what their age or
situation, is entitled to have home delivery
when they aren’t physically able to come
to the library.
Many of our elderly residents, and others
who are only temporarily challenged, are delighted when they see the
library van pull up to their home with books and movies to fill the hours
of their day!
Please consider a tax deductible donation, large or small, to this
project. Your donation can be made payable to the Euclid Public
Library Foundation and mailed to the Euclid Public Library, 631 East
222nd Street, Euclid, OH 44123, or you can drop it off at the library.
Thanks on behalf of the Board of the Euclid Public Library Foundation!
• Our library vehicle delivers library
materials to over 100 residents and a
dozen facilities, including individual
homes, senior apartments, nursing
homes and Euclid Hospital.
Loading up the old van...over
four years ago!
• It serves homebound residents from 5th grade to over 100 years
old - regardless of age, income, temporary or permanent need.
• Traveling 15 regular delivery routes, covering the entire city of
Euclid, our van drives over 143 miles of streets!
• The van has faithfully delivered staff and materials to events and
transported library programs throughout our community.
The Outreach Services van is nearly 13 years old. It is showing signs of
its age and is no longer the once reliable vehicle it used to be. The library
is seeking to purchase a replacement van, and the Euclid Public Library
Foundation is committed to helping raise necessary funds toward this
cause.
Euclid Public Library Outreach Services has served our
community in so many ways – will you consider helping us to
continue to provide these essential services?
Any donation will help and get us closer to providing the residents of
Euclid with reliable library services no matter what their needs!
80 YEARS STRONG!
“On the twelfth day of August in 1935 a resolution was made to establish
a public library free to all inhabitants of the Euclid City School District and
Cuyahoga County, Ohio.” These words are from the minutes of the Board
of Trustees. Eighty years later, our purpose
is the same; maintaining a public library, free
to all, with services that reflect the needs of
everyone for years to come.
Look for this symbol:
for
programs that reflect our 80 year
celebration!
The years of the GREAT DEPRESSION continued in 1935 with
unemployment still running at 20.1% while war clouds were gathering
in Germany.
The GALLUP POLL was introduced.
Bill Wilson, a reformed drinker, formed ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS

A completely synthetic fiber was produced called NYLON by a

MONOPOLY was first marketed on
a broad scale by Parker Brothers on
November 5. Today, an estimated
500 million players from around the
globe have been mesmerized by the
Monopoly game since its creation
by Charles B. Darrow. It remains
a classic, passed down from
generation to generation, making it
the world’s most popular game.
1935 was the year of
the birth of “Swing” by
BENNY GOODMAN,
and the world was ready
to boogie.

FEBRUARY 1-28
Celebrate Black History Month by
answering two questions each week.
It’s okay if you don’t know the answer
because you’re in the library and we
have all the books that you’ll need to
find the answers.
We will display two questions each week.
Entry forms will be at the Information Desk
and four winners with the right answer will be
chosen each week to win a prize.
Can’t make it during the week? Why not join us on the following
dates for a Saturday morning storytime at 10:30 AM in our Storyroom!
No registration is necessary, but space is limited.
