L UKE 1:35 Echoing Mary’s Decision The angel Gabriel today confronts Mary with a mystery. The mystery of salvation in Christ is not a mystery that is solved, but a reality beyond our comprehension that we must choose to enter into. In the liturgy of the Eastern Church, everyone waits to see if Mary will enter into the mystery: God waits, Adam and Eve and all the souls of the dead who long for paradise wait, angels wait for new heavenly companions. And there is much rejoicing when her decision is “yes.” We have less dramatic choices offered to us, but the mystery of our salvation in Christ is by no means “solved.” We may understand it a bit better due to Mary’s “yes.” We may be a bit closer to it through the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But it still remains a mystery to which we all must give our own “yes.” Soon we will be singing “O come, let us adore him.” May our Advent prayer, our echo of Mary’s “yes,” continue then, so we may enter into the mystery of our salvation in Jesus Christ, God among us. Perhaps this was to reassure the laity, who had memories of an earlier practice, that the new way was not only better, but impossible for a layperson to conduct. Blessings and sprinkling of holy water, the singing of as many as seven psalms, penance, anointing of all the senses, viaticum, all capped off by the clothing of the sick person in penitential garments, were part of the rite. This proved unwieldy, and creative spirits got to work. By the 1500s people made distinctions between visiting the sick, anointing, and viaticum. The attempt of the Church to be faithful to the image of a healing Christ has some complicated history, including centuries when the celebration was rare. Most sick people had no access to the rites at all; only monastics or the well off had much hope of this care. Today, those unhappy days are long behind us, and the care of the sick is an essential task in every parish’s life. As Christmas approaches almost everyone comes in contact with someone who is a candidate for pastoral care. You live out the best of our tradition when you arrange for a sick person to receive Holy Communion or the sacrament of the sick and the consolation of regular contact with the faith community. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. 809HR122114 3 Sacraments Baptism We are happy to welcome new members to our faith. Infant Baptisms are usually celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month after the last Mass. It is highly recommended that parents be active registered members of Holy Redeemer. Both parents and godparents must attend a Pre-Baptism class in their respective parish or at Holy Redeemer. After the necessary paperwork, which may be obtained at the office, is filled out, Pre-Baptism class is attended, and Sponsor Certificates from the godparents are received, then the Baptism will be scheduled at your convenience. The only exception is major holy days such as Christmas and/or Easter. No baptisms will be performed during special occasions. It is important that parents follow the Baptismal guidelines as dictated by church law. Please call the office at 286-4590 to confirm class attendance which is held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 PM, 2nd floor office building. Matrimony We welcome all couples planning to marry at Holy Redeemer. We suggest at least one year’s notice so that a date can be scheduled and it can be determined that nothing stands in the way of the valid and licit celebration of the proposed wedding (canon 1066), and to begin the preparation process. It is highly recommended for couples who reside in our parish that they be registered active members for at least six months prior to the marriage by attending Mass regularly and participating in the envelope system. If the Catholic party lives outside the parish, they need to register and participate where they reside. We are happy to help couples in a positive way prepare for their joyful wedding day and later married life. Please call Rebeca Carver at 2864590 for preparation and information. 4 GOD’S WORD TODAY Today’s readings ask us to make a home for God within our hearts. Listen carefully to the Gospel. Initially, Mary’s reaction to Gabriel’s astounding revelation is one of fear—“She was greatly troubled at what was said.” As believers, we are called to the same kind of faith exhibited by Mary and, like her, our initial response might be one of fear. A central reason that Mary is held in such high esteem in our tradition is her response to Gabriel’s message—“May it be done to me according to your word.” She is the model for all believers. She made a home within her heart for the Son of God. We are asked to do the same. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, may we allow God’s word to open our hearts, making a receptive home there for Christ the Lord. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, Copyright © J. S. All of our family traditions increase our awareness of this special event. We welcome all visitors and regular parishioners who are celebrating with us today. The challenge for us is to take the spirit of Christmas into the New Year in our commitment to Christian values. The Holy Family of Nazareth had the joys and sorrows most families experience. They are role models for us. We pray that Jesus, Mary and Joseph prepare the way of the Lord in our hearts and minds. May you and your loved ones have a blessed Christmas, Rev. Martin B. Mulqueen Pastor Parish News Remember Holy Redeemer at Christmas This is the season when we think of gifts and giving. We need to consider the wonderful gifts God has given us—our families, our parish, hope and salvation. As you consider your donations, please remember Holy Redeemer in your plans. The parish needs your prayerful support and generosity. Thank you for stewardship and sacrificial gifts. May the good Lord richly reward your kindness. 809HR122114 Blessings Somehow, not only for Christmas, But all the long year through, The joy that you give to others Is the joy that comes back to you. And the more you spend in blessing The poor and lonely and sad, The more of your heart’s possessing Returns to you glad. --John Greenleaf Whittier 5 Bible Study Paul’s letter to the Galatians speaks directly to the heart of Christians and addresses the most important question we can ask: “What must we do to be saved?” It speaks of the extraordinary gift of salvation that Jesus has won for us, and how we can unite ourselves to Christ’s redeeming sacrifice.
