P

Letter from our Executive Director
O
n behalf of our staff, faculty and Board of Directors, welcome to the Community
School of Music and Arts (CSMA). Here you will find programs for preschoolers,
private music lessons, classes in watercolors, ceramics, fashion design, digital arts and
music, an audition-free adult chorus and more!
Our unique Music School offers private lessons, theory and composition classes and
ensembles designed to nurture the complete musician. Workshop Weeks offer students the
opportunity to expand their horizons and focus on one aspect of their musical journey. Our
distinguished faculty accommodates students of all levels and aspirations. Group classes are
offered for those new to their instrument.
CSMA’s Art School permits exploration of a broad range of media for all ages and abilities.
Sequential classes develop skills and deepening of personal expression. Figure drawing classes are offered for both teens and
adults. Our digital arts classes range from photography to speed painting.
Preschool classes in music and art engage children in age-appropriate activities and personal expression. For some, these are
their first classroom experience. Our faculty works with each child and their parents to nurture their participation.
CSMA also joins with community partners, such as Abilities United, AchieveKids and Morgan Autism Center, to nourish the
spark and excitement of creativity. Art, music and dance classes for our special needs students are very popular.
None of our success could be realized without the generous support of government, foundation and corporate funders and
individuals like you who believe in arts for all. We are grateful for your continued support and the difference you make in the
lives of our aspiring artists and musicians.
Sincerely,
Vickie Scott Grove
Executive Director

new students and must be completed
before registering for private lessons.
Orientation is available online at: www.

registration, contact Kathryn Sanwick,
Private Lesson Program Coordinator,
at 650/917-6800, ext 330, or email

Continuing Students
• Continuing students receive registration
materials prior to each semester. They are
given priority for time/date selection for
their lessons.
Important Private Lesson Policies
Refunds
Financial Aid
• Students may request to withdraw or
change teachers within three business
days after the second lesson. A Request
for Withdrawal form is required. After
this trial lesson period, no refunds or
teacher changes are granted.
Private Lesson Tuition
• We feel strongly that students will see
limited progress unless they are able to
commit to a consistent, weekly lesson
time. If a lesson is missed due to a
teacher’s absence, a make-up lesson will
be scheduled. There is no school credit,
reimbursement, or refund for missed
lessons due to a student’s absence and
CSMA does not guarantee a make up for
a missed lesson due to a student’s absence.
• In keeping with our mission of making
the arts accessible to all, financial aid is
offered to qualifying students. Please see
our Student Services Office for further
information.

Music Appreciation:
The Baroque and
Classical Eras
You know Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven but
what other names contributed to the ornate
and delightfully gaudy music of the Baroque
Era and the stark and elegant Classical Era
that followed? These two eras, almost complete
opposites, still dominate the concert hall,
film, television, and of course, practice rooms
everywhere! We’ll discover what makes this
music continue to be so popular and influential,
even in the 21st Century. Tuition includes:

Music 4 Preschoolers
Reggio Emilia
Learning
Some of our preschool faculty have trained
in the Reggio Emilia style of teaching and
incorporate this into their curriculum. In
the Reggio Emilia style, the music and art
studios are set for inquiry-based learning
and the teacher’s role is to be a collaborator
with the child, not just an instructor. The
child is viewed as an active constructor
of knowledge. Rather than being seen
as the target of instruction, the child
has an active role as an apprentice. The
Reggio Emilia approach to teaching
young children puts the natural
development of children as well as the
close relationships that they share with
their environment at the center of its
philosophy. Children learn through the
experience of touching, moving, listening,
seeing and hearing.

Animals

enjoyment with singing, creative movement

“I have worked many years as
an early childhood educator
and I weave music into my daily
curriculum. My background allows
me to bring a unique teaching
style to my classes, incorporating
singing with guitar, musical games,
movement and exploration of
rhythm instruments.”
“I am always amazed at how
much children in this age group
are capable of learning! I have
been teaching music to infants,
preschoolers and families for 12
years and have worked with Music
Together, The Music Class and
Montessori music.”
“I have been teaching music and
movement classes for the last 25
years throughout the Bay Area. My
background includes training as
a teacher in Music Together, Baby
Suzuki, Orff-Shulwerk, voice, dance
and studies in early childhood
development.”
“I have a background in music from

Our Preschool ART Faculty - In Their Own Words
Lena Boot
“My passion is working with preschool-age
children, giving them opportunities to be creative
in art. In the style of Reggio Emelia, I provide a
creative art environment that gives children the
opportunity to observe, inquire, explore and
use fine motor and cognitive skills. Art provides
them with an awareness of themselves and their
surroundings.”
Saswatee Chatterjee
“I earned a BA in English from Gauhati University
in India, a Certificate of Proficiency in Creative
Arts from DeAnza College. I have taught art
in Assam, India and I currently teach K-3 art in
the Art4Schools program at Murdock Portal
Elementary School in Cupertino. I believe art is
an important means of communication. I want
to teach, nurture and develop a child’s passion
for art while building self-confidence.”
Whitney Couch
“I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from
the California College of the Arts in Oakland,
with a focus in jewelry and metal arts. I believe
that every child is inherently creative. I enjoy
providing creative materials and projects for
children to develop and express their creativity in
a fun and warm environment.”
Lisette Lugo
“I encourage creativity with hands-on projects
that give children choices. I have a degree from
Academy of Art in San Francisco and training
in early childhood education with an art focus.
My love for teaching art has taken me from
preschool to retirement communities, teaching
ages 2 to 102, using art as therapy and teaching
those with disabilities. Art is my passion.”
Frances Marin
“I received my BFA in Pictorial Art from San Jose
State University. I am a teacher and an artist,
creating original paintings, prints and textiles
for galleries and shops. I am passionate about
working with preschoolers and watching
them discover color, texture, shape and more
through art materials. Their self-expression and
stories inspire me.”
Amy Steinmann
“I love to help children explore and nourish
their creativity. Since earning a Master’s
Degree in Art and studying early childhood
education, I have had the opportunity to teach
painting, drawing, ceramics, cartooning and
the fundamentals of art to preschoolers and
K-12 students in the Bay Area.”
Dawn Walker
“I have a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music and have studied art at the University of Maine. I have taught art classes at
CSMA for more than four years. I believe that every child is naturally creative, and I strive to bring out this creativity by providing a sensory environment
of sound, sight and touch. “
