The Steering Wheel of the Porsche 919 Hybrid
Setting the direction is the most trivial task of the steering
wheel in the Porsche 919 Hybrid. The drivers of the Class 1 Le
Mans prototypes in the FIA World Endurance Championship
have a computer in their hands. They operate 24 buttons and
switches on the front along with paddles on the back to control
the most complex racing car built by Porsche to date.
before they are lapped. When pushed once, it causes the
headlights to flash three times. In daylight, the drivers keep
their thumb on it almost permanently, as naturally the headlight
signal is more difficult to see at that time.
The red button at the top left of the steering wheel is also
frequently used. Its function is to demand electrical power from
the battery, often referred to as "boost". The drivers can boost
to pass but must be clever about rationing the power. The
amount of energy per lap is specified. The yardstick is one lap
in Le Mans, where six megajoules are available. The amounts
are converted accordingly for shorter circuits. The amount of
energy a driver uses in the middle of a lap to get free of the
traffic will not be available at the end in the straightaways.
Although it is called a steering wheel, it is not round but a flat
rectangle. The shape is due to the space required during driver
changes. Tall drivers, such as Mark Webber or Brendon Hartley
in particular, would otherwise have a difficult time getting in and
out of the vehicle quickly. There is a large display in the center,
which displays a multitude of information to the driver. This
includes the speed, what gear is engaged, the currently
selected motor management, and the charge status of the
lithium ion battery, which states how much electrical energy is
available to be called up to drive the front axle. The electric
motor on the front axle supplements the turbo charged two
liter, four cylinder combustion motor, which powers the rear
wheels. The control button at the top left is used to select the
displayed information, while the drivers use the control button
in the right grip handle to dim down the display brightness at
night. The identical control button in the left grip handle is for
the volume of the pit radio, and the fourth rotary-type control at
the top right varies the interval timing of the windshield wiper.
A bit further inside on the right and left of the steering wheel
are the plus and minus switches to adjust the front and rear
traction control and to distribute the brake balance between the
front and rear axle.
The buttons and switches on the steering wheel were carefully
positioned to accommodate the drivers and facilitate reliable
operation at racing pace. The most frequently used buttons are
positioned along the top outside edge, so they are easily
reached with the thumb. The blue button at the top right, which
is almost always in use, is the headlight flasher, used by the
fast prototypes to warn the slower vehicles in the WEC field

Porsche Customer Racers Take Two Class Wins at Sonoma Raceway
Sonoma, California. Ryan Dalziel, Michael Mills and Jack
Baldwin scored two class victories and three runner-up
positions between them in Rounds 13 and 14 of the Pirelli
World Challenge this past weekend at the Cadillac Grand Prix of
Sonoma. On Saturday, Michael Mills (Angleton, Texas) added to
his points lead in the GT-Amateur (GT-A) class by sprinting to a
fourth straight victory in his EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3
R. Ryan Dalziel (Winter Park, Florida) finished second overall in
GT class in the team EFFORT Racing Porsche. Jack Baldwin
(Marietta, Georgia) captured the GTS class win in his GTSport
Porsche Cayman S in the multi-class sprint event for GT cars at
Sonoma Raceway. On Sunday, Dalziel repeated his
second-place finish in GT, giving him two first and two seconds
in the four races he has entered this season. Baldwin was
second in GTS and Mills was fourth in GT-A.
Gardens, Florida) in a Chevrolet Camaro off the starting line,
Baldwin was able to lead cleanly the remainder of the race. He
set the fastest race lap and held off Aschenbach by 1.956
seconds at the checkered flag.
The win was emotional for Baldwin as the GTSport Racing team
continues its Racing4Kelsey campaign. The No. 72 GTSport
Racing Porsche Cayman S of Buz McCall (Boca Raton, Florida)
and Baldwin are running this season for Kelsey Flanigan, a
23-year-old battling brain cancer. Flanigan and her family were
in attendance this weekend.
Round 14
On Sunday, Dalziel, Mills and Baldwin all ran well, but there
were no Porsche victories to be had for the 50-minute sprint
race that was cut short because of a late-race accident on
track.
Round 13
Dalziel's second place on Saturday driving the No. 31 EFFORT
Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R was well earned as he spent most
of the race holding off the Bentley Continental GT3 of Butch
Leitzinger (State College, Pennsylvania), who had started the
50-minute race on the pole. Leitzinger made multiple runs at
the Porsche, but was unable to make the pass. Mills' GT-A win
was equally hard-fought as his No. 41 Porsche 911 GT3 R was
in last place on lap one after a poor standing start. Baldwin, on
the other hand, never looked back as his No. 73 GTSport
Porsche Cayman S captured the GTS class pole position and
went flag-to-flag for his top-step podium finish.
Michael Mills, No. 41 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R: "I
had the worst start in the world on Saturday, and was rolling
around in last place, wondering how I could do this. My car was
so good, but I had contact with someone that knocked the
alignment out... If you want to read more:

weekend where he had led the timesheets throughout. After
surviving a close battle with Lawson Aschenbach (Palm Beach
